If You're a Texture Freak…

June 11, 2010 by Julie 48 Comments

Puh-lease make yourself a barley breakfast bowl STAT!

Strawberry Barley Breakfast Bowl

(Just FYI, STAT stands for statim, which is Latin for immediately. Who knew Peanut Butter Fingers was so educational!?)

I cooked the barley for this breakfast bowl last night by letting it simmer in boiling water for about 20 minutes on the stove top. I then immediately stuck the hot grains in the fridge.

I also added several frozen strawberries on top of the barley in the fridge to thaw out overnight.

This morning I scooped a cup of Dannon Greek yogurt over the fruit and barley to round out the bowl.

Breakfast is Served

My barley bowl was enjoyed with a tumbler full of my gym’s free Barnie’s cinnamon butter cookie coffee. This stuff is like dessert in a cup. Fantastic!

Dig In!

Sadie was sulking as I was taking these pictures…

"Yo, Woman, How 'Bout Some Barley Fo' Me?"

…So I had to shower her with lots of puppy love (and give her a doggie treat) to get back in her good graces.

I Love My Dog

I almost fell over after snapping this picture. Sadie seemed to enjoy my stumbling and jumped on me again. More puppy love ensued. 😀

Late Night Snack

When I am done blogging after dinner I may have a snack before bed. This snack is usually a peanut butter finger, a handful of nuts, yogurt or something relatively light.

Not last night!

Last night we brought out the big guns.

Orville Redenbacher's Caramel Pop Corn

My mom brought me and Ryan a bag of this deliciousness when she was visiting on Tuesday.

Orville Redenbacher’s caramel popcorn (the kind that comes with a huge pouch of caramel to melt over the popcorn) is so hard to find. My family used to enjoy it all the time when when lived in Illinois but we haven’t seen it in Florida grocery stores in years. I was super excited when she brought me a bag to enjoy!

Ryan and I downed the entire bag in less than five minutes while watching So You Think You Can Dance (glad so many of you are fans of this show too!!!).

Caramel Popcorn

I’ll be honest, I think the popcorn-eating ratio was 80% me, 20% Ryan. 😀

Questions of the Day

  • Are you a late-night snacker or is the kitchen closed once dinner is over?
  • What late-night snacks do you typically enjoy?

I am DEFINITELY a late night snacker and tend to devour lots and lots of popcorn :0) Or fruit. But, mostly popcorn!

Caramel popcorn that you can pop in a bag?! I didn’t even know that existed! Sometimes I eat a snack – just depends if I’m hungry. We usually eat our last meal late though, and I am a granny and in bed by 9. So many times, I don’t.

I am a huge fan of caramel popcorn, although I’ve never seen it in stores! Lucky you snagged a bag! 😉

I do like to munch on snacks at night, kettle corn is one of my favorites as well as any type of dessert 🙂

I usually get a bit hungry a couple of hours before bed. Sometimes it’s hard to just grab a small bite — especially if something as good as caramel popcorn is within the immediate vicinity!!!

I’ve never seen that popcorn, and good thing. I’d eat the entire thing when my husband wasn’t looking.

I generally eat dinner too late to want a snack after. Though most nights I have dessert, if that counts.

Barley for breakfast is such a good idea! I have a bunch that I need to use up anyways! Quinoa and cous cous are great breakfast grains, too, with honey, fruit, and cinnamon!

    MMMmmmmm, caramel popcorn, yum!!

I used to be the QUEEN of nighttime snacking. Lately though I’ve been eating bigger dinners to try and break the habit. I don’t necessarily think it’s bad to snack at night, but for me I was doing too much snacking so that’s why I have put a stop to it.

    Happy Friday! 🙂

I really don’t get too many late night hankerings. I love me some Orville Redenbacher SmartPop, a better alternative:)

I also love a little No Pudge Brownie mix with yogurt, mmm.

Awww. My little monster truck Jax will not hesitate to mow you down in order to get some affection. He is quite beastly and enjoys having everyone on HIS level 🙂

I was wondering why your strawberries are always perfectly trimmed and juicy looking! FROZEN! Genius! No worries about mold- I can’t go through a carton of freshies before they go bad. HMPH.

I hardly ever snack after dinner- mainly because our schedules are so insane busy we eat dinner around 8 or 9 every night. Whoops.

I watched that last night too! And it depends on what we have in the house. If there is something delicious like chips and french onion dip then no way can I resist, but if there’s nothing good then I’m typically finished after dinner.

I’m a grad student so I’m usually up pretty late (12am most of the time) so I’m always hungry between dinner and bedtime. I usually enjoy toast with PB because it really fills me up and keeps me from snacking any more.

I’m not much of an after-dinner snacker… but then, of course, my dinner is usually around 8 pm and my bedtime is no later than 10, so there’s really not that much time to get hungry again!

argggg Canada has nothing like that variety of popcorn, or at least from what I have seen we don’t. I don’t really like popcorn but caramel mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I am not hungry in the evening, but require a snack otherwise I am up around 3 or 4am drowsy and heading to the fridge. I prefer the solid sleep.

O.M.G! I haven’t seen that kind of caramel popcorn in YEARS! Reminds me of childhood! My mom used to make that exact type of caramel corn (it comes out all gooey and delicious) when I used to have slumber parties and other special occassions. SO GOOD!

Usually it’s my sweet tooth that gets me later in the evenings, not actual hunger, for a long time I kept Vanilla Merengues on hand from Trader Joes. They’re just 25 cals a piece and a little crunchy so perfect to nibble on and get that sweet fix without doing too much damage.

I always have a night time snack – usually oatmeal or some kind of carbalicious creation. That way I don’t wake up ready to eat my arm off 😉

Popcorn looks AWESOME! As well as the barley 😀

    HAPPY FRIDAY Julie 🙂

I almost always have something after dinner to curb my sweet tooth, but it always changes. I’m pretty sure my pretzel chocolate chip cookies will be covering that for a few days… 😛

I always, always, always have a snack after dinner, pre-bed.

In the winter it can be something like a small muffin. In the summer it is usually an ice-cold fruit smoothie.

I am a HUGE texture person when it comes to food. I hate it when foods taste good, but have absolutely awful textures. Because I just can’t eat them then.

I’ve never even heard of that “do it yourself” caramel corn…it’s genius! And seems like it’d be pretty much the perfect nighttime snack. My evening snack of choice is a small bowl of cereal. Or a Vitatop. Or peanut butter toast…

I definitely want to try barely. I mean, I’ve had it before, but I don’t think I’ve ever made it on my own. And I’m always looking for ways to switch it up for breakfast!

yummmmmmm! i am definitely guilty of being a late night snacker. i try not to, but it’s probably one of my biggest weaknesses! i usually stick to healthy options though, like fruit, whole grain cereals, and yogurt. my daily meals sort of go breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, breakfast. your popcorn is making me so hungry… it is a whole grain after all so there should be no guilt in that, right!? 🙂
