Happy National Doughnut Day!
Who’s celebrating with me?
Just in case you want to party in the kitchen this weekend and celebrate Doughnut Day at the same time, I highly recommend making my mom’s homemade doughnut munchkins.
They were always a huge hit at sleepovers growing up. They’re unreal and super simple!
I made sure to head over to Dunkin’ Donuts to get my free doughnut for the day (with a drink purchase). I initially picked my all-time favorite doughnut, the apple fritter, but was told that particular doughnut was “too fancy” and wasn’t included in the free doughnut promotion.
I scanned the peasant doughnuts for my plan b selection. I immediately skipped over any and all cake doughnuts. (Only wackadoodles prefer cake doughnuts over soft, pillowy doughnuts. I’m looking at you, Meghann.)
In the end I picked a chocolate kreme-filled doughnut.
It was a soft, traditional doughnut with a little extra flare from the powered sugar and filling. Nice and doughy! The kreme tasted like cake frosting. Doughnut heaven!
Lunch
After getting some work done this morning and before heading off to Dunkin’ Donuts for my little treat (I’m blogging from there right now! Yay for free wifi!), I met up with a friend for lunch at Moe’s.
I tried to cram as many veggies into my midday meals as possible and opted for a salad, topped with lots of fixings.
I asked for double the beans which was a smart decision. Mmm!
I’m hoping to cram in a few more hours of work at Dunkin’ Donuts before heading home and doing something with the ridiculously ripe bananas we have chillin’ in our pantry. I’m thinkin’ banana bread!
Question of the Afternoon
Totally stealing this question from Meghann…
- What is your favorite kind of doughnut? (If you say a cake doughnut, I guess we can still be friends.)
My all-time favorite doughnut is the apple fritter, but I also love those glazed twisty doughnuts. Ryan’s favorite is a glazed doughnut with pink frosting and sprinkles. No lie!
Laurel says
Oh this is hard…I love most of them..except blueberry…well I love it but not the most. I think an eclair will be my top choice…love custard!!!! And I like the ones with the cinnamon-sugar stuff. Basically I could stuff my face with donuts. Love you my dear apple fritter of a friend.
JV says
The only donuts I eat are from a convenience store/gas station chain in Iowa (Casey’s) and they are the best cake donuts ever!!! I always get maple frosted. The best 🙂
Katie @ Katie Moves says
Coconut CAKE donuts all the wayyyy! 🙂 sorry Julie!
Brooke says
Hey Julie, have you ever thought about doing fashion posts in your workout gear in the am? It might sound silly, but as someone who is new to the gym and lifting/taking classes, gyms can be intimidating! I find it tough to feel comfortable sometimes trying new exercises and just lifting when it is all new to me. It would be helpful for those gym inept like myself to see what kind of work out wear you find comfortable and practical. A lot of the stuff out there is pretty flashy! Thanks Julie, your blog is one of the best 🙂

I used to ALWAYS get a chocolate long john at the grocery store when I shopped with my mom (in the morning. in the afternoon it was a cookie!)
Suzanne(fitmindedmom) says
Do cinnamon rolls count because you DO BUY them at the donut shop?! They are my FAVE!!! After that, I like basic donut holes and YEP, even blueberry CAKE donuts, lol!!!
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I’m not huge on donuts (I sometimes like them for dessert but don’t like anything too sweet in the morning), but when I do have them, plain old glazed is where it’s at!
Sarah says
It seriously PAINS me to look at these pictures of doughnuts. I absolutely ADORE Dunkin Donuts, and the closest one is three hours away. It’s awful. There’s a Krispy Kreme that’s 30 minutes for me, but in my opinion- it’s not worth the drive. I don’t want my donut to melt in my hands and turn into nothing. I like a little sustenance. I LOVE their maple, apple fritter and toasted coconut. YUM!
Kate says
My grandma makes homemade yeast doughnuts and glazes them herself! They are beyond delicious! Nothing beats a hot homemade doughnut.
Caryln @ carylnrambles says
I’m not going to lie, I am NOT a doughnut person. I know…it is practically a sin. But I think what I lack in love for doughnuts I make up for with my love of cake, cookies, and ice cream!
Kimberley says
A yummy Krispy Kreme doughnut please! I love jam filled doughnuts and i hate custard filled or banana custard filled doughnuts! Yuck!
Cindy says
I’m not sure what qualifies as a cake donut… I’m not much of a donut eater.. but I cannot seem to resist a Dutchie! Something about the glaze and the raisins really get me droolin!
Shannon says
Don’t hate me Julie! I love your blog! But…cake doughnut with sprinkles 🙂
em @ simplypresent says
I’ve never been a big donut fan but I remember always getting the chocolate glazed donuts after church when I was younger – oh the memories!
Ruth says
I love cake donuts, to me the filled ones aren’t really donuts, there is no hole!
I love cinnamon sugar ones, my Mom used to make them, and they always give me that homely feeling. I loved shaking the donuts up in a bag of cinnamon sugar.
Rachel says
I’m right there with you on the apple fritters. Delicious! Also, “peasant doughnuts” made me laugh really hard. 🙂
Kristen says
When I was little my dad would bring home donuts from this awesome little donut shop near our house when he would work the late shift. I would always cut off little pieces of all the donuts because they were all so delicious! However, and I do apologize Julie, but chocolate cake donuts have always taken the cake in my book;)
I’m actually not a donut person anymore–too sweet first thing in the morning for my adult palate I guess;)
Nathan says
Cake doughnuts all day! Homemade Apple Sauce Doughnuts are pretty killer
Megan says
Apple fritters all the way!! Love your blog and while reading an article on the “10 worst cities for singles” today on Yahoo I was surprised to recognize the name of #2 on the list — Ocala, FL! Before reading your blog I had never even heard of Ocala. But anyways, good thing you’re married haha 🙂
Lisa says
mmmmm…Moe’s! I wish I could eat their chips and queso everyday! 🙂
Maple bars are my fav! I wish we had a Dunkin’ Donuts around here. Maybe Krispy Kreme is giving away free donuts?
Natalie says
I love that you looked over the “peasant” donut choices lol. I want a donut now!
Zoe says
Who in the world likes cake doughnuts?!?! Madness. I am definitely anti-cake doughnuts. In fact, they should even be called something other than doughnuts, like cakenuts.
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
I thought that was pretty funny on Meghann’s blog today. 😉 I couldn’t believe she doesn’t like creme-filled donuts! My favorite is a long donut with creme filling and chocolate on top. We used to call them “long johns,” but I don’t know if that’s the “real” name! 😉
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
How funny, never knew donut day existed! 😛 I’m not a donut fan whatsoever~but once in a GREAT while I’ll take 2 bites if it’s right there! I do tend to enjoy the ones with choc glaze on top, or the ones with filling though! And your looks oddly delicious~never tried dunkin’ donuts either!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
My fav is the one with the vanilla icing and sprinkles!
Donut holes are pretty awesome too.
Maura @ My Healthy 'Ohana says
From Dunkin, I love their apple fritter or boston creme pie donuts, and their blueberry cake donut…I know, but it’s actually really good!
Min says
I love all baby donuts! For some reason, they taste more scrumptious than their bigger version haha.
I live in Austin, TX and there’s a doughnut place called Round Rock donuts! it’s legit! the best ever!! It’s quite famous too! this small establishment has been featured on food network channel..pretty awesome! If you are ever in Austin, you must stop by you won’t be disappointed =)
Tia says
I like plain cake donuts hahaha!
Liz @ Iheartvegetables says
I’m such a kid… I like glazed + chocolate frosting + sprinkles. I don’t even generally like sprinkles… unless it’s on a doughnut. haha
Mae says
My favorites are Krispy Kreme plain glazed (hot), or a chocolate covered Boston cream-filled. Mmm!
Brittanie @ Three Bracelets says
Mmmmm … how did I miss this notice? My favorite is definitely a chocolate glazed with rainbow sprinkles. Unless there’s a cinnamon bun type of a doughnut, then that’s another story.
Claire says
Mmmm now you have me thinking of all kinds of donuts. I guess my favorites are: apple fritters, cruellers (so good!), and the coconut creme donut from Donut Plant in NYC
Laura Lea says
Blueberry or cinnamon cake donuts….cake donuts always for me (shield face)…don’t judge me!!!
Beka says
I’m a wackdoodle! I love love love cake donuts. One of my other faves is the chocolate iced yeast donut with REAL custard inside…. boston creme I guess? yum!
I’ll eat a regular if it’s fresh. I’m not a fan of the white sugary cream filling though.
heather says
chocolate old-fashioned . . . and i’m really not a chocolate person. and maple bars. and sometimes jelly donuts if the filling isn’t gross.
Julie says
I went to Krispy Kreme for their original glazed. My favorite is a stuffed PB one!
Floey says
Jelly all the way! My dad used to get me them all the time when I was younger 🙂 But the older I get the more I seem to enjoy just plain glazed. Damn I am getting boring haha
Meghan @ After the Ivy League says
I love the chocolate creme donuts! My boyfriend in high school used to work at Dunkin Donuts and would bring me any extras after his shift, so delicious! Not so great for my waist line, but oh well!
Alysha @Shesontherun says
The chocolate filled doughnut used to be my absolute FAV! I haven’t had one in about 7 years, but they were the best.
Alaina says
My favorite donuts are the lemon filled and the apple spice. And when I’m really in a sugary mood, a chocolate frosted. I’m like you when I like the donut to just melt in your mouth. 🙂
jane says
I’m with Ryan – pink frosting and sprinkles can’t be beat!
Stephanie @ My Freckled Life says
Haha I have to admit – blueberry cake is definitely my favorite. Followed by the pumpkin cake that they always put out in the fall. But growing up, my favorites were definitely the bavarian creme ones which were COVERED in powdered sugar. The messier, the better!
