When you become new parents, people inevitably give you tons and tons of advice. Some of it is incredibly valuable and words of wisdom you take with a grain of salt. One piece of advice we received from a bunch of people was to take plenty of videos of Chase.
They told us his first year will pass by in a flash (if the first five months of his life are any indication, this could not be more true) and before you know it, we would have a hard time remembering what his adorable early morning squeaks and coos sound like.
I’m trying my best to stay on top of videoing our baby boy but I already feel like I’ve missed some moments I wish I would’ve captured! I’m beginning to realize that as a mom it’s impossible to take too many pictures or videos of your baby.
I feel lucky that taking short videos of our baby these days is so simple. Since my phone is typically close by at all times, capturing a quick video on my iPhone is a breeze and Ryan and I already have way too much fun looking back over the videos of Chase when he was a newborn and seeing how much he has changed.
My mom was always pretty good about taking videos of our family as my sister and I grew up, but unlike videos today, all of her videos are stored on VHS tapes that take up a ton of space. And guess what? We never watch them because I’m pretty sure no one in my family has had a VHS player for years.
Enter Legacybox!
Legacybox is a service that digitally preserves old videos and photos. They can take any format (tapes, film, photos, audio cassettes) and transform them into archival DVDs or optional thumb drives and a fancy schmancy Legacybox for storage.
And the process could not be any easier!
Here’s how it works:
- Purchase a Legacybox and once it arrives in the mail, fill it with your memories. Tapes, photos, etc. Whatever you have, they can make it work!
- Place the provided barcode stickers on your tapes or onto the outside of a bag if you are sending in photos.
- When your box is ready, you can simply hand it to your mailman or take it to the post office. Every Legacybox kit comes with a pre-paid shipping label.
- In a few weeks, your memories will arrive at your doorstep on DVDs or optional thumb drives.
(You also receive all of the originals back, just in case you wish to keep them as well.)
I initially wanted to surprise my parents with DVDs of our home movies, but locating their family videos required me actually asking them for their tapes. Even if the end result wasn’t a surprise, I think my parents were still thrilled with the result! The quality was fantastic and all of the DVDs came labeled according to the labeling on the VHS tapes we sent in.
My mom said she’s planning on utilizing Legacybox to transfer the remainder of her VHS collection to more storage and viewing-friendly DVDs and I’d love to send in some of the old photos I have from when Ryan and I first started dating that were all taken on disposable cameras.
Even though the holidays are over, I think digitizing old photos or videos would be such a wonderful Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift, especially for the “hard to buy for” folks out there!

holy smokes! this is so cool! how have i never heard of them before?!?! I have family home movies on VHS up the wazoo and have been bumming because i have no idea what to do with them (especially since i got married and moved out and we don’t own a vcr). I could never get rid of them and now I know I can preserve them. Even if i don’t win I’m going to have a couple of my favorites transferred for sure (my grandpas retirement tape specifically. he used to own a tailoring shop in detroit and the tape shows him giving a tour of his shop on the day he closed).
p.s. i don’t know if i joined a mailing list per se but i did enter my email at the link i clicked!

I would put all 15 years of my dance recitals VHSs on DVD! I haven’t watched them in so long, as I don’t have a VHS player.

My grandpa had some old slides and family films that my mom got when he passed away. I would love to have those preserved for her.

Joined! I’d love to do this for my parents. They use to video us all the time as kids on one of those big, shoulder-hurting, video cameras, and every once in a while a home movie will make its way to being played. This would be fantastic for them!

Both of my daughter’s baby videos are on VHS tapes as well as a lot of their baby pictures. I’ve been wanting to get the tapes moved to DVDs so this would be awesome!

It’s funny: Growing up and having your father be a professional photographer you get used to your life documented. For the longest time I enjoyed photo albums and having the memories pop in when looking at them.
With my mom passing away I want to be able to share those memories with family one day and think the best way would be to digitize them.
What a great gift idea and giveaway! Thank you!!

We have so many home videos from when we were growing up. They are mostly just little 5 minute snippets on each tape so it would be awesome if we could get them all combined and preserved for my parents!
