(I love that pic of Ryan! He looks so excited! I also love that 95 percent of the pregnant women I see at my doctor’s office arrive in leggings, hoodies/zip-ups and sneakers. Yes!)
Seeing our baby dance around during our 18-week ultrasound and hearing the heartbeat sound so strong at 138 beats per minute was simply the best. It had been nearly a month since our last ultrasound and whenever there is a such a big gap between our appointments, I cannot help but feel anxious about everything. I swear I would get an ultrasound every day if I could! They put my mind at ease and make everything seem all the more real.
The ultrasound technician took her time looking over our little one, pointing out important organs along the way. It absolutely blows my mind that you can see a baby’s kidneys and the four chambers of the heart during an ultrasound. So detailed! At the end of the appointment, the anatomy scan occurred and the sex of our baby that we first found out during our 14 1/2 week 3D ultrasound was confirmed! (We set up the 3D appointment on our own at a local imaging center.) I have a lunch date with a friend I’d like to tell the sex to in person later this week, but I’m planning to share the news on the blog on Thursday. One blog reader said I should set up a quick survey on the blog to see what YOU guys think we’re having and I loved the idea, so I put together this fast survey:
[polldaddy poll=8712232]
I’m pretty curious to see what you guys think! Especially since most of my friends’ predictions were wrong! My dad and mother-in-law got it right and said they were both hit with a “strong feeling” about the sex soon after they found out we were expecting.
After our appointment, I kissed Ryan goodbye and drove home to make a quick lunch before it was time to head back out to the gym to work for a few hours.
On the menu for today was a very simple almond butter and jelly sandwich served with a small bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios.
And an apple for the road…
We’re now out of all produce and fresh foods in our house, so a trip to the grocery store is on the agenda for this evening.
Have a great night, my friends!
P.S. Thank so much for your crib and gliding chair recommendations on my morning post! I appreciate it!

That heart rate screams boy all day!

so exciting! your hubby looks so excited. such a sweet time.
Julie @ A Life Exotic says
Did you and Ryan wear pink and blue on purpose? So cute!! 😉
Julie says
no!!! haha! i wish we would’ve planned that b/c it is totally something we’d do. 🙂
Julie @ A Life Exotic says
Haha, too funny! I think you get credit anyway.
Kate says
I thought the same thing!! At first when I saw your hoodie I thought, IT’S A GIRL! Then I saw Ryan and thought IT’S A BOY! Then saw your red (pinkish) jelly and red (pinkish) apple and decided to vote for a girl. i love your blog dearly but I honestly don’t understand why I’m so invested in what the baby is!!
Jan Klein says
Because we all are! Me too! Can’t wait to find out.
Julie says
LOL!! 🙂 I promise to tell on Thursday!
Caitlyn says
I’m guessing GIRL! 🙂
Jennifer Keller says
Just voted for a girl, then I viewed the results and it’s almost exactly 50/50, too funny!! Can’t wait until Thursday’s post!
Mary Beth Richardson says
I feel like you’re a sneaky person that could be hinting at times. I was going to say GIRL because you’re wearing pink. But then Ryan is wearing BLUE. I still say girl, but my theory of your sneakiness is kind of out the window. HAHA!
Julie says
you’re making me wish i would’ve been waaaay more creative with the subliminal messaging over the course of this past week!! that would’ve been so fun!
Mary Beth Richardson says
HA! I guess you could blame the hormones! Sometimes hormones will delay the creative effect. HAHA! Glad that today’s appointment went WELL and baby pb is doing good! 🙂
Kaitlyn says
It’s not too late to start…you’ve got until Thursday! 😉
Brittany @ Lemon Lime Life says
Love the joyous looks on both your faces! So much happiness in the PBF family right now! 🙂
Michelle says
Girls usually have a higher heartbeat than boys, so I’m going for a girl!
Sarah says
That pic of Ryan is too cute! And of course, you are beautiful and glowing, Julie! You’re going to be such great parents. So excited for the big reveal!
Liv @ Healthy Liv says
You both look so incredibly happy! Just reading this makes me so excited for you two!
brittany says
I hope it’s a girl but based on all of the “symptoms” (old wive’s tale symptoms) it sounds like it’s a boy. Can’t wait to find out! 😀
Selin says
Glad your baby is doing great and healthy, that’s the most important thing! Our anatomy scan is around 20 weeks, so we have 2 more weeks to go. So exciting! I voted for a baby boy since our girl has a higher heart beat than your baby has (our due date is one day earlier than yours- so I think they are comparable) 🙂 😉
Alyssa says
I seriously chose girl because of the pink sweater, pink plate, pink(ish) jelly, and red apple. 😛
Amanda says
Hi Julie!!! Congrats to you and Ryan!! It is such an exciting time and flies by so quickly! My baby boy just turned ONE, last week! Time can just stop now haha :-). On a side note, where did you get your crossbody bag in your fist picture? I’m dying for a new one and that looks cute with sports clothes and like I can dress it up! Thanks in advance!!!
Julie says
Thank you!! It’s Marc Jacobs and I got it on sale via HauteLook around Christmastime! 🙂
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Yay! So happy to hear things went great at your appointment! The pregnant women at my doctor’s office are the same way … everyone is all about the comfy clothes, and hey, I’m happy to jump right on board with it. 😉 I can totally relate about the refreshing feeling of hearing/seeing the baby and knowing everything is going great in there. I just had another appointment today after nearly a month, and I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to hear the heartbeat again! So excited to read your gender reveal!!
Amanda says
I chose girl because the journal your girlfriend bought you is pink 🙂
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
SO exciting! I can’t wait to hear the sex!
Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections says
I say boy just because I am having a girl. You must share if your own predictions were right! Mine were so off and my husband had no idea. Most my readers guessed girl and they were right!
Jessica says
I voted girl before reading, but now I’m thinking boy when I saw the heartbeat. Funny that the votes are at 50/50. Can’t wait to find out!
cleaneatingveggiegirl says
SO many people in the blogging community have had/are having boys… so I’m going to switch it up and guess girl!!
Julie says
Glad you guys got to go to your appt. today! So fun and always a relief to check on things and hear all is well. And is there anything sweeter than an excited dad-to-be? Love it!
Julie says
I LOVE how excited and curious Ryan is about everything! It really is the best!
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
Looking forward to the reveal! Im surprised you didn’t have a gender reveal party since you’re always so creative with gifts and other parties you go to. I also want some Honey Nut Cheerios now. I actually thought about some last night out of the blue. I used to love putting some extra honey on them. mmmm.
Pam S @ Nuts for Nutrition says
so cool that you can see the baby’s kidneys and heart chambers!!
My husband and I hoping/trying for a little one too, it’s crazy you only actually have a 20-25% chance each month! It’s been about 4 months so far, so we shall see! How long did it take you guys?
Julie says
Hi Pam! I actually detailed a bit more about our journey in last week’s Q&A posts (just in case you want more info), but we feel very, very fortunate that I got pregnant the first month we tried. I had been off birth control for several months prior, however, (though we were still actively preventing pregnancy up until Nov), and I honestly think that helped a bit!
Pam S @ Nuts for Nutrition says
Thanks Julie!
Nikki says
Pam S, did you get your little one you were trying for a year ago?
Elisabeth says
I’m going to say boy!
Skigirl0891 says
Congrats on the anatomy scan!! Our scan was unfortunately the beginning of a REALLY scary time when my fluid levels were continuously misdiagnosed 🙁 It was a rough couple of months to follow but our boys are healthy & expected any day now!!!!
I’m guessing boy since my twins always register at about that same heart rate <3
Jen in TX says
Judging my your husband’s face, I’m going to guess a boy! Our firstborn was a son, and my husband was super excited. I don’t want to rain on any parades here, but as someone who works in the medical profession, I’d just like to say be cautious about having repeated ultrasounds during pregnancy. There just aren’t any long-term studies to know the possible effects. That said, please don’t worry about having had a few done.
Janet says
I am happy either way
Shel@PeachyPalate says
The vote is such a brill idea!!! eek!
Sarah @ Sarah Sincerely says
The results are almost perfectly 50/50! Crazy! And I’m a liiiitle upset by your post title, I was all ready to learn the gender. 😉 Looking forward to Thursday!!
Nothing better than a good ole PB&J!
Eliza says
I know this time can be so nerve wracking but have faith that everything will be okay with your little baby <333
Julie says
<3 <3 <3
Merissa says
Your hubby looks pretty excited! i’d have to say BOY. That heart rate sounds just about what our little guys was. my husband was deployed so I didn’t get to see his face, I hope it would’ve looked something like that though!
Congrats,
*i came across your blog by accident, and I’m happy I did!
Julie says
so glad you found me!!
Katie R. says
I was thinking GIRL, but then you added that bit about your dad and MIL had guessed it right..so now I think BOY!
Lina says
I don’t know why but I feel absolutely certain it’s a girl, but I’m usually wrong, haha! So glad everything went well though, I’ve read your blog for several years and actually only two or three weeks ago I found myself wondering if an announcement like this might be in the near future. Haha, way too invested!
Courtney! @ Redefining Athlete says
I’m so surprised that the results are split 50/50. Isn’t it absolutely obvious to everyone else that it is a girl?! 🙂
Did you always know that you would find out the sex? I’m adamant that I want it to be a surprise, but I feel like once I’m actually expecting that I’ll be too excited to wait.
Julie says
Yes!!! I was neeeever planning to wait. If I could’ve peed on the pregnancy strip and had it tell me THEN, I would have! 🙂
Shannon says
That picture of Ryan is so cute! You two are going to be great parents! 🙂
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
haha love the poll idea- it’s so evenly split right now!! I’m guessing boy 🙂
Julie says
I know!! I’m surprised how even it is!
Melanie says
Love the pictures of you two! I said boy from the beginning and I’m sticking with it! 🙂
Nicole @ Runs & WODs says
Congrats on the fantastic news!!! You’re going to be the cutest and fittest pregnant person!
Angela @ HonestlyAngela says
Love the poll idea – its crazy how close the results are. Can’t wait to find out!
Jill says
I’m guessing girl because I craved the same things you are eating and I had 2 girls!! It was all carbs and fruit- no meat at all during the first trimester!
Laur says
I heard the sicker you are the more likely it is a girl, so since your nausea wasn’t TOO bad I’m going with a boy!
My mom says your nose gets wider if you’re pregnant with a boy, so uhm… Would it be awkward if I asked if you noticed a difference in your nose? LOL love wives tales.
Julie says
haha!! I haven’t noticed any changes with my nose, but that’s too funny!
Taca @ A Side Of Dessert says
So excited to find out what the little one is!
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
You guys just look so cute! Can’t wait to hear what the gender is! I am thinking pink but we shall see. 🙂
kelly says
I’m guessing boy! your symptoms are very similiar to what mine were and I have 2 boys! We found out at 12 weeks with both of them! Either way it is a blessing!
Meg says
Just so you know, I get butterflies every time I click on your posts these days.
My initial feeling was it is a boy, but the fact that you were waiting for the 18 week ultrasound confirmation after having the 15.5 week ultrasound appointment makes me think it’s a girl; I have heard that boys are quick to spot because of their telltale anatomy, whereas with girls you are never sure whether it truly is a girl or whether you just can’t see it based on the angle.
You are going to be so in love when you snuggle him/her in your arms that first time that it doesn’t matter at ALL, but it is still so exciting because it makes the experience all the more real. I am so excited to follow along with your journey. As far as I’m concerned, turning into one of those “mommy/pregnancy” blogs sounds awesome (even though I know you said you weren’t going to do that). Still, I imagine all your readers will happily devour as many baby related posts as you decide to write. 🙂
Julie says
<3 I cannot help but write all about it right now!! :) thanks for your sweet words and encouragement!
Katie S says
Keep them coming – they’re the highlight of my day!!!
Molly D. says
Eeek! I’m SO excited to find out what the gender is!
Question for you– what almond butter do you use? It looks delicious!
Julie says
Justin’s! But I usually just buy whatever is on sale. 🙂
Erin @ The Almond Eater says
You both are beaming! So cute. I’m excited to hear if it’s a boy or girl.
Dione says
I guess boy, since you are a HLB and you all seem to have boys. Am I right?:) A girl would be fun though! It’s exciting either way.
Julie says
ha!!
jennifer says
I’m gonna say boy 🙂
Cara says
Oh my! You’d never survive in Manitoba! Appointments are every 6 weeks, and you only get one ultrasound (at 20 weeks). And even then, if they take the time to check the sex, only your doctor can tell you at the next appointment (often 4 weeks later)!!
