A First Attempt

March 23, 2010 by Julie 29 Comments

Tonight I made my first attempt at poached eggs!

While reading Real Simple at the gym this morning, I read that the key to successfully poaching eggs is to add a little bit of white vinegar to the pot of boiling water.

Here are some other tips:

  • Poach the egg in milk for a richer taste
  • Add a bit of white vinegar to the boiling water (other vinegars may be used as well, but may alter the appearance of a perfectly white poached egg)
  • The fresher the egg, the better it poaches
  • Crack the egg into a ramekin so it may easily slip into the water
  • Spin the water with a spoon before dropping the egg in
  • Drop the egg into the middle of the spinning water
  • Allow the egg to cook for 3 – 4 minutes
  • Remove the egg from the water with a slotted spoon

With all this new knowledge, I was ready to make my first attempt!

The result…

Poached Egg??

Total fail.

Or, in Sadie’s case, complete success!

Sadie + Failed Egg

Sadie earned her failed egg after expending some energy at the dog park before dinner.

"C'mon... Just trrrry to take it!"

I threw in the towel on the poached egg attempt after only one try because Ryan and I were too hungry to waste any more time.

Any tips out there for making the perfect poached egg?

We enjoyed our non-poached eggs on top of toast and ham steaks.

Dinner is Served

Even though we didn’t get to enjoy poached eggs as planned, dinner was still pretty darn tasty.

The best part? I have a leftover ham steak that’s just screamin’ to be used in a breakfast sandwich tomorrow morning. Yay for leftovers!

I’ve never tried to poach one, and I am completely intimidated by the thought!

I actually found a great way to poach eggs 🙂 You take some clingwrap (microwave safe) and lay it out over a small bowl, break the egg inside of it and then bunch it up on top, tie a knot in the top part of the clingwrap. Then you just drop it in the water, boil for 6-8 minutes and it comes out perfectly poached. Basically you’re making a little bag for the egg to go in – kind of cheating but it works!
    I love your site 🙂

You can also boil water with a little bit of vinegar and when you drop the egg in, make swirl motions around the egg with a spoon. After a few seconds of doing this the egg will set enough so that it will stay together for the rest of the cook time!

I’m not a fan of eggs so I don’t have any advice, but the ham looks mighty tasty! Yay for breakfast sandwiches too!

I know that eggs help give dogs a shiny coat though so Sadie is gonna be looking hot!!

I have only poached eggs once, and they came out perfectly. I cracked the egg into a ladle, then slowly put the ladle in the water! 🙂

When I poach eggs I do it in simmering, not boiling, water. It helps to keep the whites together.

If you read my post with the sweet potato hash you made I have a poached egg tutorial. Its not too hard! The key is to crack the egg in a separate bowl first and then slip it into the water, then turn down the heat a little. If the water foams up, just gently blow on it and it will go down. And use a slotted spoon to take it out. You should try again — you’ll get it!!

Poached eggs have always looked too intense for me (as in the cooking process at least). Besides an egg overeasy is super easy and super delicious!
