Catching Up with Former Coworkers

June 9, 2010 by Julie 22 Comments

I’ve never been one to go out to lunch during the work day. I always bring my lunch to work, mainly because it saves a lot of money. I also genuinely enjoy preparing a healthy and delicious lunch.

That being said, whenever I do go out for lunch, it feels like a special treat and a little vacation from my typical work routine.

Today I met my friends Ryan and Ashley for lunch at Dexter’s, a casual but trendy restaurant located in Thornton Park.

Dexter's

I worked with Ryan and Ashley for a little more than a year at the Orlando Museum of Art when I first graduated college.

The three of us comprised the museum’s marketing and public relations department (Ryan was the manager, I was her assistant and Ashley was the graphic designer).  Ryan and I have both since left the museum and Ashley is finishing up her last week there, but we all fortunately still live and work near downtown Orlando, so we try to meet up for lunch to keep in touch every so often.

Lunchin' Ladies

(You may see recaps of our previous lunch dates here and here and pictures from Ashley’s wedding in January here).

I arrived at Dexter’s planning to order a big salad until I remembered that they offer a “create your own sandwich” option that I adore.

I opted for a sandwich that included:

  • Turkey
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Sprouts
  • Cucumbers
  • Dijon mustard

Make-Your-Own Turkey Sandwich

I had it prepared “Cuban style” (pressed) because I was in the mood for something warm (which is odd considering it’s in the 90s today…).

Lots o' Veggies

I ate every last bite!

Along with my sandwich I enjoyed several handfuls of sweet potato chips that Ryan ordered for all of us to share.

Sweet Potato Chips

I definitely had my fair share of these bad boys. I <3 sweet potato chips!

All in all, lunch was great and so was the company. There’s never a dull moment with these two ladies!

Those sweet potato chips look amazing! I am not a huge fan of fries or chips made with white potatoes, but there is no controlling “the beast” when sweet potatoes are involved.

Mmmm… I’m liking the looks of those chips! I’ve stayed in touch with former coworkers mostly through the occassional email. Only once did I ever meet up with one to catch up.

YUM! Dexter’s….one of my favorite places 🙂
I like to get the ‘dexter’s special’- it’s not on the menu..but they now what I’m talking about- it’s some kind of delicious turkey sandwich – not even sure of everything that’s in it..but boy is it good!!
I stay in touch with a few ex co-workers..but just like thru facebook/email.

Sweet potato in any form is great, right?
I have worked 3 different places in the past three years and I find it really hard to keep up with everyone. I have friends from high school, friends from college, friends from work! It’s hard to stay in touch with everyone but I guess I should count my blessings 😉

Lunch looked yummy and it always tastes better when surrounded with good friends. Unfortunately I now live on the other side of the country so keeping in touch with old co workers is hard. I do speak to some of them through Face book though:)

Oooh, I LOVE sweet potato chips. Is it weird that I’ve never really had “co-workers?” I went straight from being in college to grad school (where I worked as a TA, so I don’t think of the people I worked with as co-workers) to teaching at another college, so again, I don’t feel like I have “co-workers” per say.

    Okay, long comment. 🙂

That looks like a great sandwich. Even though I moved to DC and the rest of my old co-workers stayed up in Philly, we still keep in touch. Once a year the make the trek down to DC to visit for the weekend.

Dexter’s looks like a really cute place to get lunch and I like the make your own sandwich idea! I try to stay in touch with old coworkers as well, by getting together for lunch or dinner. I’m with you on bringing lunch to work in order to save money & be healthy…but going out is always a nice treat!

Mmmm, sweet potato chips! I keep in touch with a handful of my old co-workers. In fact, one was even in town last weekend and we had breakfast. It’s always fun to catch up with old friends.

That turkey sandwich looks PERFECT as far as turkey sandwiches go! 🙂 I never had a real job, always been self-employed or in the family biz, so I don’t have any ex-coworkers to stay in touch with. 🙂

Actually, I don’t talk to anyone still that I used to work with. This was before the days of facebook which makes things so much easier for me!

I never exchanged numbers with any of my coworkers back then. I would go out to lunch with them sometimes, but never once did I hang out with them outside of that.

    My darn socially phobic ways!
