During my senior year of high school I immersed myself in childhood education courses and took a child development class which I absolutely loved. In the class, each high school student was assigned a preschooler to work with throughout the semester.
According to a temperament theory based on a study conducted in the 1950s, my preschooler, Max (who I adored), fell into the “slow to warm up” category of temperaments. He was shy and tended to withdraw from social situations with other kids.
He became quite attached to me, but had a hard time coming out of his shell around others. One way I could get him to approach other children was to point out similarities he shared with them.
“Oh look! Jason is wearing a yellow shirt just like you!”
Max would get so excited and would muster up the courage to tell Jason about the awesome thing they had in common.
I think this experience really stuck with me because I still point out obvious similarities in my day-to-day life. If two people come to work and they’re both wearing a red shirt and jeans, I feel the need to point it out to them.
Today I was quite matchy-matchy myself… with my coffee tumbler. 😀
Though my drink and I were a match made in heaven this morning, my breakfast failed to include the color coral and didn’t really mesh with my ensemble.
Breakfast
Today my morning meal was a fast favorite.
I made myself a yogurt bowl with Greek yogurt, fresh blueberries and Gerber Graduates banana puffs because I’m a kid at heart. 😉
Fast. Simple. Satisfying.
That’s how I roll.
Please Help!!!
Do any of you out there know how to publish photos with captions through Windows Live Writer??? I can’t figure it out for the life of me! (Clearly this post was not published through WLW because my photos have captions. I need my captions!)
Question of the Morning
Did you ever change your major in college?
I changed my major a couple of times.
Education –> Psychology –> Advertising & Public Relations
Stephanie says
I believe it’s a plug-in. I found this article through google. Hopefully it’s helpful!

I changed my major a couple of times. I went from general studies too an art major and then to business administration. Now I’m going back to school for nutrition!
peanutbutterfingers says
thanks!!! i’ll definitely check it out!
Jaclyn says
Cute jacket!! I started out as philosophy –> political science –> studio art –> communications & journalism. Random!
Sorry I can’t help with WLW 🙁 I still just use WordPress!
Janna's Keeping it Real! says
I changed mine, but not a huge change! Finance to accounting.
I should have gone with my gut though, which was nutrition. Now, 3 years later, I want to go back and pursue what I should have from the get go! :/
Tina says
I never knew how to do that either. I just don’t put a line of blank space between my photo and text to kind of look like a caption. Or you can always “save post to blog” through WLW and then go through and add captions to your post in WordPress through editing the post. That’s a lot of extra work though.

I really didn’t know what I wanted to do once I got to college….exercise science to speech pathology (BS) and now teaching (MA). Although it took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do, I’m so happy with my teaching position. Definitely worth the wait.
Shanna, like Banana says
I started as an Engineer, then I thought I should be a Poet, then back to Engineer. Now I’m an Engineer who is also a Wedding Planner…too funny 😉

I didn’t change mine IN University, although I wanted to be an elementary school teacher when I was growing up. In high school, I changed my mind and knew I wanted to become a news/sports reporter/anchor. So, that’s what I do now 🙂 Have a great day!!!
Erin says
Ughh I have changed my major 4 times!!
Graphic Design – Studio Art – Interior Design – Back to Studio Art..wow
Corie says
I changed my major from elementary education to travel and tourism/business administration. One of my education courses required us to spend a few days in a classroom for observation and after that I didn’t think I wanted to spend 8 hours a day with kids! Looking back on it I think it’s very hard for an 18 year old to be put in the situation where they have to choose what they want to be! In the end I am glad I got a bachelor’s degree in business and if I ever wanted to be a teacher again, I could always go to grad school to get a teaching degree. I think I would stick to an older age level though – easier to relate to and not as much whining! : )
Jojo says
I also changed my major from education to psychology. But I stopped there. I love your approach to help that child approach potential friends! So smart! That technique is forever burned in my brain now as an approach to tell future clients who are struggling socially.
Kelly says
How come you changed your mind? Just curious. I didn’t change my major…I was a business major but once I got out of college and worked in the coporate world for 4 years I knew it wasn’t for me. I went back to school to get certified in nutrition. I guess hindsight is always 20/20! 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
to be totally honest, it was mainly a financial decision. i wanted to have the potential to make more money than most teacher’s salaries allow. i still think it would be a neat field!
lisaou11 says
I dont think you can put captions with live writer. I never figured it out.
I started out as a Journalism major—then changed to Kinesiology and then ended up at Communication.
I honestly never knew what I wanted.
I think it’s so hard to ask young adults to figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives by the time they are juniors in college.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i really like that story…so cute 🙂 i changed from English to Business Management, but wish i’d gone with nutrition!
vitaminamy says
Is that the coral jacket you bought yesterday?! It’s pretty!
My undergraduate degree was in dance (major) and health science (minor). About halfway through college, I decided I wanted to study nutrition. I took a TON of science classes and am now in grad school to get my master’s in nutrition :).
P.S. I also could not figure out captions in LW. I just went back into WP to fix them or not do them at all sometimes :(. I’m computer-challenged!
peanutbutterfingers says
yes it is!!! 🙂
Holly at Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices says
I changed my mind a TON, but I wish I had stuck to my VERY first original way of thinking–
since I could talk until my first year of college I wanted to be a teacher- it went from teaching 3rd grade, to wanting to teach high school. I even did my internship in college @ Eastwood HS – & I LOVED every minute of it.
But, then as college went on, I changed to advertising/ PR…& then after I was HALF way thru that major, I switched to Political Science- pre- law & intended to go to law school…well, then plans changed & i realized law school wasn’t for me. Soooo I finished my degree up in Political Science- I love politics…but a degree in political science is not worth much. Thankfully my job now involves some principles of law…so at least I’m able to use it a bit 🙂
(whooaa that was really long- sorry- just got to rambling- haha!)
Melissa says
I think you would have been a wonderful teacher, Julie! It sounds like you were really great with Max!
I started as pre-med, then switched to kinesiology, then gave up on that all together & majored in English. After college, I ended up going back to get my degree in education. Even though I was undecided for a long time, I’m glad I finally found the right fit for me! I love being a teacher!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
Ha! I changed mine a million times. If only I had stuck with what I really wanted to do – write!!
Anna says
I went in as an English major…and came out as one! I think it’s definitely what was meant to be…because I’m now an English instructor, ha.

I think most change their minds unless they had that idea since a child.
Lizzy @LBBakes says
Oh gosh, yep I changed my major in college. 🙂 I went from marketing, to secondary education, back to marketing. 🙂 Sometimes I wish I hadn’t gone back to marketing so that I could have summers off. Can’t have it all, I suppose!
Courtney @ Three Months says
I changed my major a few times…started as Marketing, then Broadcasting and finally settled with Advertising.
Michelle says
I started as a Chemistry and Physics major and ended with a double major in ‘Society & Environment’ and Sociology. I then went on and got my post-grad in Education. After teaching for 4 years, I realized it was not for me. I now work at an investment company and I’m much happier (and healthier!)
I teach fitness for fun and I keep thinking about taking some nutrition courses. So I’m sure there will be more education to come!
Marilou says
Name a job – I wanted to do it!
In Quebec you have to make your college selection when yuo’re 15/16 .. which is way too young to know what you want to do with your life.
I started out with a Delinquancy Intervention major, then switched to pre-law, then quit … thought about culinary school but went back to school to do a Communication pre-university degree.
I finally never went to University, worked a couple years then went back to do a Business Administration degree than slowly switched to PR/Communication ….
Let’s see of it will stick! haha
homecookedem says
Oh cool! I think you’d have been a great elementary school teacher! 🙂 I also was very interested in psychology and thought about majoring in it for awhile.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I changed my major from English to French, and now I really wish I’d started off with nutrition! Senior year is too late to change your major, espesically when they’re in such different fields 🙁
Amanda says
I started out college studying animal science, then I went to Univ. of Arizona and studied Racetrack industry (horse racing)… then I took a semester off to work on a Thoroughbred breeding farm… then I went back and finished off my degree in psychology. So, I have my undergrad in psychology, with a minor in journalism. And what am I doing right now? Working at a small animal vet clinic as a veterinary assistant. Ha!
Alexis @ Mission: Ambition says
While I was at UCF, I changed my major so many times. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I ended up just doing Interdisciplinary Studies so that I could graduate on time. It worked out well actually, since I was able to take the areas I was most interested in and create my own plan.
Angela says
First of all I just wanted to tell you I tried my nephew’s Gerber Graduates cereal yesterday and they were awesome. I thought they would be really bland but they were quite delicious.
Now onto college, I didn’t change my major but it took me forever to decided what I wanted to do. I considered accounting, teaching, marketing and finally ended up in PR. Part of me still wishes I would have done accounting or teaching, but there’s still time. I might be a teacher yet!
Erin says
I went from undecided to Pyschology to English and now that I’ve been working… I am back in school to study nutrition…which is what I always wanted to do. I sure could have saved a lot of time if I just did it right from the start! 🙂
Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA says
I have changed QUITE a few times!!!! LOL
Nursing –> phychology –> biology –> biochemistry (undergrad)
Then:
Biochemistry (PhD) –> Physician Assistant
Don’t think many can beat that! LOL 😉
Laurel says
No lie…everyone at work has a blue shirt on today…and I pointed that out to everyone.

I didn’t change my major in college but I am currently getting a masters in a completely unrelated field…I got my undergraduate degree in business marketing and I’m getting my masters in Education
Rachael says
I’ve changed my mind about careers every year or so for the past decade. Went into college as a Russian major (I was going to run the State Department, or so I thought) then moved on to Journalism, held that one but added Politics, threw in Irish Studies and Environmental Studies as minors, then went to grad school for Counseling before getting a teacher’s credential for Special Education. These days, I’m farming, writing and running a sustainability non-profit. Is any of it related :)?
Courtney says
Haha, seriously? You were in education? Too funny my dear, too funny!
Yeah, well for me, it wasn’t until after I finished college and got into the field I’m in that I’ve decided it’s not for me. Too bad my instincts didn’t kick in sooner! Now I’m at a crossroads…blech!
pursuitofhealthfulness says
That’s such a cute strategy for getting Max to open up… I never really thought about it before, but I guess I do the same thing! I always pinned it on being “observant” as a journalist!
I’ve always been pretty set on journalism. Generally, though, I think it’s good to go to college with an open mind. Here in Germany they basically pin your career to you in 5th grade. What nine year old knows what they want to do with their lives? We’d have SO many ballerinas and astronauts.
P.S. Good luck with the captions!
Meg says
Aw what a cute story! I wanted to be a teacher in high school, but when I first went to college I changed my mind to parks & rec in hopes to become a travel planner. Now I’m a graphic design major and I love it! 😀
Good luck with the captions! Super cute tumbler AND outfit, as usual!
Kelly says
I went into school undecided and then after I was accepted to the program immediately declared Media Arts and Design as my major. Loved it!
Anne @thefitbridesmaid says
My coworker and I match constantly! And it’s always weird combinations, like brown pants and pink shirts.
I never changed my major, although I thought about it a couple of times. YAY STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING!
Monica says
Yes, I changed my major three times.
1. Biology pre-med (shot my goals very high, but knew I wanted to help people – in the end just not a fit with my other life goals)
2. Journalism (seemed like a good fit because I love to write, but such a rat race and wouldn’t really be helping folks)
3. Communication, emphasis in PR and Org Development (broad enough and covered topics that were of personal interest
Turned out to be a perfect fit because it gave me a broad skill set that I could fine tune as needed. 🙂
I now work in higher-ed and always tell the incoming students to just pick something that they love and have a personal interest in.
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
How/when did you decide to try Gerber food? I would never think to pick it up…
I started out in education, too… then ended up with advertising as my major and psych as my minor! With a few nutrition classes thrown into the mix 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i tried it when i was in high school babysitting! i though it was delicious. 🙂
Maura says
I changed my major once but it wasn’t very far from where I started. I went from Biology to Bioscience & Technology. Crazy leap, huh? Truth be told, I only changed it because I didn’t want to take some of the plant/ecology classes Bio majors were required to take. lol
bridetobefit says
Never changed my major during school, I’ve always been positive that I wanted to teach. After graduating, and having a horrendous time trying to find a job, I thought about going back to school for something else…. simply because I was worn out from trying. I stuck to it though, and landed a teaching job! Persistence! 🙂

I started as a music major, switched to English, then psychology, finally got a degree in social work!

Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous says
I didn’t exactly change my major but I changed direction in what career I wanted. I doubled majored in Biology and Biochemistry for undergrad and originally had planned on going to vet school but by sophomore year had changed my mind. Now I’m getting my master’s in Nutrition and Health Promotion!
Amber K says
Education became office management for me. And yet the job I have now in child care is closer to the education side than anything to do with an office!

Sociology –> English Education –> English
I don’t think anyone gets through college with just one major.
