Broiled Curry Tilapia

August 25, 2010 by Julie 39 Comments

It’s the little things in life that make me smile the most.

Look at what the UPS guy left on top of a package he delivered to us today:

Sadie met the UPS guy for the first time yesterday, so when he dropped off another package for us today when we weren’t home, he left a little treat for Miss Sadie on top.

How cute! 🙂

Dinner

Another simple thing made me smile this evening… Trying and somewhat enjoying curry.

For as long as I can remember the smell of curry always turned me off.

After browsing around different websites for a tasty tilapia recipe, I stumbled upon a Cooking Light recipe for broiled tilapia with Thai coconut curry sauce. Since the ingredient list was about a mile long for that particular recipe, I decided to keep it simple and make broiled tilapia, seasoned lightly with salt, pepper and curry.

As I seasoned the fish with several shakes of curry, I found that the smell wasn’t quite as bad as I remembered. I still wouldn’t say it was mouth-watering, but it wasn’t repulsive to me, either.

Within 10 minutes, our broiled curry tilapia filets were ready for eatin’.

Along with the fish we enjoyed roasted Brussels sprouts and onions seasoned with garlic salt.

So, how was the curry-seasoned tilapia? I ate the whole thing, if that says anything. 😉

I must confess that I added a big squirt of ketchup to the plate, which helped a bit.

I definitely did enjoy this meal and feel more open to trying other curry-seasoned dishes in the future. Maybe curry will be like broccoli… Something that takes me years to learn to love. 😀

Question of the Evening

Is there a particular spice you don’t or once didn’t enjoy? Did you ever learn to love it?

I can’t think of a time I’ve ever eaten curry.. guess it’s a good time to get more creative with my flavorings!

Gaw…. I gotta try brussels sprouts, too.

You really should give brussel sprouts a whirl! I waited 25 years too long to try them! Turns out, they’re fantastic!!!

Your UPS guy is sweet! and obviously a doggy lover 😀
After a bad experience with cinnamon I avoided it for years! The smell of it would make me nauseous – but I’ve recently put the past behind me and rekindled my relationship with cinnamon 😛

I’m not really into cilantro or dill. My hubby HATES rosemary. Whenever I even open the jar, he immediately gags. Such a shame because I adore that spice but I can never use it.

I’ve never been much of a curry fan, either. But just today I gave a curried egg salad a second chance and was relieved to find that I didn’t hate it as much as I did the first time. Dare I say it actually tasted good?

Aww, I LOVE the dog bone!! That’s so sweet 😀
And, I would have to say cilantro would be the spice that I have come to kind of love. To me it tastes like dish soap- have you heard that before? It’s something of a genetic thing- or like you know when some people eat asparagus & their pee smells- but that doesn’t happen to everyone- it’s like that with the taste of cilantro. You probably already know this, but I thought I’d share- I always thought it was so cool 🙂

i really can’t even walk past an indian restaurant (i live in nyc, so smells are aloof!) for the smell of curry- blech! Also, cilantro is another herb I really do not enjoy. I can tolerate it in a guac, but i really try to avoid it.

This was the first recipe I ever made with curry powder and I think it’s delicious. The flavors of the other ingredients helped tone down the curry flavor until I got used to it. I hope you like it!!

I’m so happy you are getting to like curry! I think it’s definitely an acquired taste but once you start liking it, you can’t get enough!

I used to hate the taste of ginger, but I use it all the time now to spice up my Asian dishes.

Not really any spices, but more so a fresh herb–cilantro. I thought it tasted like soap for a long time, but I have grown to appreciate its fresh flavor.

Good for you! Curry is made from turmeric. It is a powerful antioxidant that is known for being anti-cancer. It actually forces cancer cells to die. I’m trying to like it, but not so much. It is also good for joint pain.
So far, I do better with capsules! You inspired me to try harder.

I LOVE curry – all different kinds. It’s such a great spice because it works in so many dishes – fish, rice, roasted chickpeas, beans, etc. I am also a big fan of coconut curry – two yummy flavors melded together.

I think I pretty much love every spice out there. I haven’t found one that I don’t like and I’ve tried a lot. I even love cilantro. My hubs on the other hand can’t stand garlic or onions – so it makes for boring cooking.

I love curry and recently made a Mango Chicken Curry dish that was fabulous and didn’t just taste like curry. Here’s the link in case you’re interested: http://pajamachef.wordpress.com/2010/08/13/mango-chicken-curry/

And as for other spices, I can tolerate just about anything in moderation, though I don’t like reallllly spicy foods. No thanks! 🙂

I used to hate curry too. Then I made a coconut curry sauce with shrimp and it was love ♥

In a pan, sautee some scallions with oil until they start to soften. (you can skip the scallions if you don’t like them/don’t have them on hand, no biggie). Add in light coconut milk, curry powder, and shelled, raw shrimp. Simmer until the shrimp are done. Top with cilantro (chopped peanuts are good on top too!). I serve this with brown rice and broccoli on the side. It is delicious, simple, and made me fall in love with curry!

That Cooking Light recipe sounds really good. I would recommend trying it as written at least once. The coconut milk gives curry a different taste. It’s more mellow, so you might like it better. I thought I didn’t like fennel for a long time, but joined a CSA where I got a box of fresh, in season veggies each week and lo and behold had fresh fennel to use. I hate to throw food away, so I figure I would try it. I found a great recipe on the food network website and fell in love! Now I make a salad with roasted fennel on it at least once a week in the autumn. I’ve made a conscious effort to try things again that I didn’t like as an example for my kids. In addition to fennel, I’ve discovered that I like hazelnuts and turnips recently.
