It’s the little things in life that make me smile the most.
Look at what the UPS guy left on top of a package he delivered to us today:
Sadie met the UPS guy for the first time yesterday, so when he dropped off another package for us today when we weren’t home, he left a little treat for Miss Sadie on top.
How cute! 🙂
Dinner
Another simple thing made me smile this evening… Trying and somewhat enjoying curry.
For as long as I can remember the smell of curry always turned me off.
After browsing around different websites for a tasty tilapia recipe, I stumbled upon a Cooking Light recipe for broiled tilapia with Thai coconut curry sauce. Since the ingredient list was about a mile long for that particular recipe, I decided to keep it simple and make broiled tilapia, seasoned lightly with salt, pepper and curry.
As I seasoned the fish with several shakes of curry, I found that the smell wasn’t quite as bad as I remembered. I still wouldn’t say it was mouth-watering, but it wasn’t repulsive to me, either.
Within 10 minutes, our broiled curry tilapia filets were ready for eatin’.
Along with the fish we enjoyed roasted Brussels sprouts and onions seasoned with garlic salt.
So, how was the curry-seasoned tilapia? I ate the whole thing, if that says anything. 😉
I must confess that I added a big squirt of ketchup to the plate, which helped a bit.
I definitely did enjoy this meal and feel more open to trying other curry-seasoned dishes in the future. Maybe curry will be like broccoli… Something that takes me years to learn to love. 😀
Question of the Evening
Is there a particular spice you don’t or once didn’t enjoy? Did you ever learn to love it?
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
I can’t think of a time I’ve ever eaten curry.. guess it’s a good time to get more creative with my flavorings!
Gaw…. I gotta try brussels sprouts, too.
Janna's Keeping it Real! says
You really should give brussel sprouts a whirl! I waited 25 years too long to try them! Turns out, they’re fantastic!!!
kristy @ ksayerphotography says
Your UPS guy is sweet! and obviously a doggy lover 😀
After a bad experience with cinnamon I avoided it for years! The smell of it would make me nauseous – but I’ve recently put the past behind me and rekindled my relationship with cinnamon 😛
Lauren says
I’m not really into cilantro or dill. My hubby HATES rosemary. Whenever I even open the jar, he immediately gags. Such a shame because I adore that spice but I can never use it.
Jacqueline says
Awe, it’s the simple things in life that make me so happy too.
I’ve never tried curry before…I’m gonna have to change that soon.
Jacqueline says
Oh and I do not like very many herbs at all & absolutely hate rosemary. Weird, I know. 😉
kyree90 says
I’ve never been much of a curry fan, either. But just today I gave a curried egg salad a second chance and was relieved to find that I didn’t hate it as much as I did the first time. Dare I say it actually tasted good?
peanutbutterfingers says
next on my curry list is curried tuna salad! i hope it’s as good as your egg salad was!
Holly at Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices says
Aww, I LOVE the dog bone!! That’s so sweet 😀
And, I would have to say cilantro would be the spice that I have come to kind of love. To me it tastes like dish soap- have you heard that before? It’s something of a genetic thing- or like you know when some people eat asparagus & their pee smells- but that doesn’t happen to everyone- it’s like that with the taste of cilantro. You probably already know this, but I thought I’d share- I always thought it was so cool 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i’ve never heard of that! i always knew cilantro was one of those polarizing spices, but i never knew why. so interesting!
Holly B says
i really can’t even walk past an indian restaurant (i live in nyc, so smells are aloof!) for the smell of curry- blech! Also, cilantro is another herb I really do not enjoy. I can tolerate it in a guac, but i really try to avoid it.
Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says
I’m not a huge fan of curry either. I don’t even own any since I never cook with it. Nothing wrong with disliking curry!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
I’ve actually never had curry! I have it but never used it. No clue what’s wrong with me.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I love curry!! I used to never experiment with spices, but I’m realizing how much they can make or break a dish. Curry + tilapia sounds delicious!
Tina says
I’m a fan of almost all spices. As for foods, I learned to love ketchup. LOL I will never love cottage cheese though. No matter how hard I try.
Heather says
oh my, i love curry! my hubby hates it but it’s one of my favorites…so potent 🙂 i actually don’t love caraway all that much…UNLESS it’s on brussel sprouts 🙂
Shanna, like Banana says
I love the dogbone..so sweet and so cute!
I like things HOT and with tons of FLAVA so I don’t think there is a spice I met that I didn’t like 😉
Wendy @ Seriously Sassy says
Oh how cute is the dog bone? Love it!
I have never been to handle cumin. Blech!
Chelsea at Striking Balance says
The tilapia sounds great! Im not the biggest curry fan either, but my taste buds seem so be changing so I might give it another try!
I am super jealous of your brussel sprouts though, my favourite roasted veggie! Yum!
Bekah says
This was the first recipe I ever made with curry powder and I think it’s delicious. The flavors of the other ingredients helped tone down the curry flavor until I got used to it. I hope you like it!!

that actually sounds really good!
Nicole @ yuppieyogini.com says
I’m learning to like hotter spices like chili. I didn’t used to like cilantro and now I love it.
Jean@RoastedRootsandPumpkinSpice says
I’m so happy you are getting to like curry! I think it’s definitely an acquired taste but once you start liking it, you can’t get enough!
I used to hate the taste of ginger, but I use it all the time now to spice up my Asian dishes.
healthifiedhaven says
Not really any spices, but more so a fresh herb–cilantro. I thought it tasted like soap for a long time, but I have grown to appreciate its fresh flavor.
bubblegumgymkat says
I use to hate cayenne pepper because my mom put it in everything when I was younger..now I LOVE IT!!!
Mama says
Good for you! Curry is made from turmeric. It is a powerful antioxidant that is known for being anti-cancer. It actually forces cancer cells to die. I’m trying to like it, but not so much. It is also good for joint pain.
So far, I do better with capsules! You inspired me to try harder.
Marina says
I didn’t like pepper, but now I love it, specially fresh grinded.
I don’t like thyme at all, yuck :))
Kattrina says
I LOVE curry – all different kinds. It’s such a great spice because it works in so many dishes – fish, rice, roasted chickpeas, beans, etc. I am also a big fan of coconut curry – two yummy flavors melded together.
I think I pretty much love every spice out there. I haven’t found one that I don’t like and I’ve tried a lot. I even love cilantro. My hubs on the other hand can’t stand garlic or onions – so it makes for boring cooking.
Sarah says
I love curry and recently made a Mango Chicken Curry dish that was fabulous and didn’t just taste like curry. Here’s the link in case you’re interested: http://pajamachef.wordpress.com/2010/08/13/mango-chicken-curry/
And as for other spices, I can tolerate just about anything in moderation, though I don’t like reallllly spicy foods. No thanks! 🙂
christina says
I used to hate curry too. Then I made a coconut curry sauce with shrimp and it was love ♥
In a pan, sautee some scallions with oil until they start to soften. (you can skip the scallions if you don’t like them/don’t have them on hand, no biggie). Add in light coconut milk, curry powder, and shelled, raw shrimp. Simmer until the shrimp are done. Top with cilantro (chopped peanuts are good on top too!). I serve this with brown rice and broccoli on the side. It is delicious, simple, and made me fall in love with curry!
christina says
I meant to add – curry alone can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not a big fan of it to start. Try it in a recipe, you might change your mind 🙂
Kathi says
Cilantro. I didn’t not like it and avoided it at any cost. But I know love it! How weird is that? but I really do enjoy using it now.
Bonnie says
What a super UPS guy – ya gotta love those people who are our everyday angels.
janetha g. says
oh my gosh, your UPS man wins at life!
Sarah says
i used to not be a curry fan other untill someone told me to pair it with cinnamon. The combo is good on cauliflower.
Cassie says
I absolutely hate fennel. No clue why or how that got started, but if it’s on anything put in front of me, I just won’t eat it.
Your UPS man sounds awesome!
Sara says
That Cooking Light recipe sounds really good. I would recommend trying it as written at least once. The coconut milk gives curry a different taste. It’s more mellow, so you might like it better. I thought I didn’t like fennel for a long time, but joined a CSA where I got a box of fresh, in season veggies each week and lo and behold had fresh fennel to use. I hate to throw food away, so I figure I would try it. I found a great recipe on the food network website and fell in love! Now I make a salad with roasted fennel on it at least once a week in the autumn. I’ve made a conscious effort to try things again that I didn’t like as an example for my kids. In addition to fennel, I’ve discovered that I like hazelnuts and turnips recently.
Amber K says
That is sooo sweet of the UPS guy.
I’m also not a huge fan of curry. Otherwise, I can’t think of any spices I dislike.
