Am I Off My Rocker?

August 27, 2010 by Julie 37 Comments

Cheesecake for dinner and now cake for breakfast… Am I off my rocker?

No, no, no. I haven’t completely abandoned my healthy ways!

Today’s cake for breakfast came in the form of a protein cake!

Protein Powdaaa!

To make this sweet mini cake, I simply combined the following ingredients:

  • 1 scoop All the Whey chocolate peanut butter cup protein powder
  • 1.5 tbsp. unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 large pinch of baking soda
  • Enough water to moisten everything (1/8 cup?)

Protein Cake Ingredients

After stirring everything up, I microwaved the mixture on high for a minute, monitoring it to make sure it didn’t poof up too much and overflow the container.

After a minute, my protein cake was ready for eatin’.

Protein Cake

I paired my protein cake with a cup of cold, creamy Greek yogurt.

Friday Breakfast

Take a Bite!

This lil’ recipe was inspired by a concoction I saw on Janetha’s blog a while ago that used pumpkin in place of the applesauce.

This recipe is a lot like my normal protein brownie recipe, but the addition of the applesauce really helps make this lil’ cake nice and moist! It’s also delicious smeared with peanut butter or with a handful of chopped nuts thrown in! The possibilities are endless. 😀

Question of the Morning

  • Protein Powder: Love it or hate it?

I cannot stomach protein shakes made with just protein powder and water or milk, but I love protein powder used in recipes, stirred into oatmeal or incorporated into ice cold smoothies.

That looks delicious! I find protein powder makes me break out really bad. I’ve even tried different types to see if it was the ingredients, but unfortunately nothing changed in the way of my acne volcanoes with the stuff. But I think it really helps in muscle repair and building! 🙂 I noticed an increase in my energy when I used it, along with recovery for my next workout! 🙂

Hahaha I love that it is bigger than your head – I have the same tub and HATE lugging it into the kitchen!
I used to love protein powder but am no longer really into it. Still use it sometimes once a day though.

you should try it w/ a different kind of protein powder. it makes a HUGE difference. i hated it w/ this protein powder i bought from walmart, but when i made it w/ all the whey it was fabulous.

I like protein powder but try to stay away from synthetic products as much as possible. The only protein powder I use currently is vega which doesn’t have all the yummy flavors like the brands you use.

I’m with Nicole on this one….I’d rather eat eggs and toast, yogurt, ricotta….any form of protein that is REAL food. I want to know (and see!) my food source 🙂

How was the protein cake? It’s a little intimidating looking for me…

Protein powder is a necessary “sometimes” in my book… I’ll occasionally throw it in a smoothie, but I don’t use to very often.

Yum! Looks good. I agree, can’t do just straight protein powder and milk, but love to throw some in smoothies or oats to add a little bit of flavour!!

that is the biggest thing of protein i’ve ever seen! you could practically fit in there!

i can’t say i really care one way or another on the protein powder thing…although i can see the benefits of adding it in lieu of less healthy ingredients!

well there’s an interesting way to use protein powder!!

I’ve recently tried protein powder in green monsters (made for my fiance) and was not a fan unfortunately. I blame that though on a certain something —- about 5 years ago, my horse kicked me in the face breaking my jaw. I had my jaw wired shut for 6 weeks and after loosing 10lbs in the first week, I started my diet of ensure and protein powder drinks. I think tasting the powder now subconsiously brings me back to that crappy time.

I’ll have to try baking with it though!

I never tried protein powder. The idea of it just grosses me out for some reason.

I think I would try your cake though! 🙂

I have had so many not-so-tasty experiences with protein powder that I don’t really even try it anymore. But, my husband always wants to get some. I will definitely have to try these cake like protein cookies though! Anything that even resembles a baked good might be enough to change my stance on protein powder! 🙂

I just started using protein powder and I love it. It keeps me full and satisfied so much longer. And I love that you can mix it into anything. I love protein pancakes so I think a cake might be right up my alley. This one looks delish!

I actually just got a bag of chocolate protein powder from the Healthy Living Summit. I’m not a shake person or anything, but I found that adding it to oatmeal and such is pretty amazing. I give it a thumbs up! 🙂

I got a similar protein cake recipe from Foods of April – I used Biochem Chocolate Whey and I didn’t like it at all – but maybe it was just that one brand…

As a vegetarian I definitely use protein powder. But I can’t digest whey properly and don’t trust the highly processed soy. My only alternative is a 100% non-gmo pea protein.

I love that it just has ONE ingredient – the pea protein! But I have to adjust recipes like this because it certainly doesn’t have that sweet flavor to it!

Dude I would not even be able to pick that thing up!

When I was a child, my dad would make me protein smoothies with chocolate powder, banana, milk, and ice. They were so good. I don’t eat a lot of protein powder nowadays, but I still think it tastes good / I have a slight emotional attachment to it.

I use it on occasion in smoothies, but not that often. I think I get enough protein from real foods, so it is not needed.

It never occured to me to use Protein powder as an actual part of a recipe. But it makes total sense. Will probably link to this post in an upcoming one on my site about Protein supplements. Just an awesome recipe, Julie. Favorite blog post on this site. 🙂
