On the Fly

September 13, 2010 by Julie 39 Comments

Between my morning workout, dentist appointment and commute back to Orlando from St. Pete this morning, I didn’t have time to put together a morning post.

I ate breakfast on the fly and didn’t snap any photos, but you don’t need a camera to document a good workout now, do ya?

Today’s workout included some light cardio interspersed with total-body weight training that looked like this:

  • 10 min. stair master
  • Leg extensions
  • Squats
  • Hamstring curls
  • Deadlifts
  • Bicep curls
  • Tricep extensions
  • Shoulder raises
  • Tricep pull-downs
  • 10 min. run

I completed the entire workout in about an hour and was showered and sitting in a chair at the dentist’s office before I knew it.

Good news: No cavities!

The dental hygienist said I’ve been doing an excellent job on my flossing.

About a year ago I learned the secret to receiving this compliment from the dentist. Simply floss right before you go to the dentist. It makes your gums less sensitive and less likely to bleed, which basically screams “This is the first time I’ve flossed in months!”

Not that I advocate not flossing or tricking your dentist or anything… 😉

Once I got to work, I had a bunch of things on my plate and was a busy little bee until I broke to enjoy this meal.

'Dilla!

Peach Greek Yogurt

Not a bad grab-whatever-you-can meal!

My lunch included a quesadilla prepared on a whole wheat tortilla with kidney beans and steamed broccoli and a cup of peach Greek yogurt.

It wasn’t anything mind-blowing, but it was tasty and nutritious. A successful lunch in my book!

Question of the Afternoon

Would you rather visit the doctor or the dentist?

I hate needles and basically anything medical, so I’d pick the dentist every time!

I still see the dentist who cleaned my teeth throughout college back in St. Pete because I trust him and know he won’t hurt me. He’s filled a few cavities in my mouth, which involved shots, and used this numb-y stuff that made it painless to numb my mouth before the shot (I just felt pressure), so I no longer get nervous about trips to the dentist! HUGE victory for me.

I totally do the flossing trick before I go to the dentist too!! Also, if I am planning ahead, I try to floss every day the week before my appointment. Not that we should trick our dentists, but no one is perfect all the time!

I used to think the doctor was better, but now that I am older and have yearly “ahem” appointments, I’d rather go to the dentist. It’s at least a little less embarrassing!

I don’t really like the dentist, but now would rather it then the doctor. I’m trying to get myself in the flossing habit by using those picks w/the floss. I know it’s wasteful, but trying to get into the habit. Another fact it helps your heart health by flossing more regularly.

I thought the beans were cranberries at first, and that got me thinking, how good would cranberries me in that kind of a wrap?

OMG I hate anything medical also. Plus, I always end up waiting at the doctors office for like an hour before he sees me, which only adds to the anxiety. I do love the dentist! In college, I had to get gum surgery TWICE due to grinding my teeth and brushing too hard. So now I make it a point to go to him twice a year and love every second of it! 🙂

I never have a problem seeing my doctor or dentist. I’ve always had a good experience going to see both. I don’t mind having blood work done (I have it done yearly) and I really don’t mind my dentist. I have TMJ disorder and have been going to my dentist about once a month for the past 2 years. We are finally at the stage to see where to take my TMJ treatments, which will mean fewer appointments.

I hate going to the DOCTOR. I have no problem setting up and getting to my dentist appointments though. I also floss every night after brushing my teeth because I prefer not to go to bed with food fermenting between my teeth, yuck!

I hate the dentist! It seems anytime I need work done on my teeth when they give me the shot they hit the nerve that leads to my eye. It makes my eyes water for over an hour and hurts like nobodys bussiness. =( The doctors and I get along fine, even with shots!

I hate the dentist, so I would much rather go to the doctor’s. I have also had terrible experiences novacaine, ie. two failed shots, so they had to go in a thirdmtime – so painful. Your dentist sounds much better than mine though.

I prefer a doctor’s visit over a dentist’s, even though I love my dentist to death! I still visit the one I used in growing up in Florida even though I live across the country. He told me he thinks it might be time for me to move on, but it’s hard finding a dentist that you really like!

I’d prefer the doctor actually — dentists just make me uncomfortable — I hate the noise of the drill or the cleaning tools, the clanking on my teeth with that little mirror, etc. I hate it!

Dentist all the way! Needles freak me out. Just the idea of the Doctor raises my blood pressure 🙁 I have never had a bad experience at the Doctor. But for some reason they freak me out! Plus, I feel like the Dentist usually spends more time with you then a Doctor usually does. I love the little tip about the flossing. I confess I am an every other day flosser, I just always seems to forget to floss 😉

I’ve learned my lesson about the dentist…don’t only go but make sure to GET XRAYS!!! I had an unnoticed cavity between my back molars and it ended badly. I didn’t feel anything until my tooth actually fell apart from the decay eeek!!! I’ve had to get gum surgery, a root canal, and crown to fix it, (visiting 3 kinds of oral surgeons in the process) and had 3 small cavities between my molars as well. Without the xrays, the dentist always said my teeth looked beautiful and I’ve only had one “regular” cavity my whole life. Needless to say, I am now a twice-a-day flosser, will start visiting the dds twice a year instead of once, and keep up to date on my xrays!

This is my first time commenting here but I read your blog all the time! My dentist is actually my cousin so going to the dentist actually isn’t to bad for me! Except sometimes I think he is a little more rough on me when he is using the teeth cleaner than he is with his other patients…

I don’t get the dental fear thing. I love going to the dentist. I love the feeling of freshly cleaned teeth. I’d go every three months if my insurance would let me.

On the other hand, I hate the doctor. I go when I need to but I generally leave pissed-off because I felt rushed and couldn’t get all my questions answered.

The dentist is always just annoying to me… I take good care of my teeth so it’s never painful or traumatic, but the whole shebang is just not my favorite thing. especially the unnecessary small talk with the hygienist (do you really think I can TALK with my mouth propped wide open?! gah!)
But I looove my doctor and medicine really interests me so I actually kinda enjoy the visits, believe it or not!

I am DEFINITELY a big baby when it comes to the dentist. I have had so many problems with my teeth that like you, I am terrified. I’ve learned to seek out a place with one of those “We Cater to Cowards” logos on their front door. I also literally tell them to treat me like I am 5 years old in reference to my pain tolerance and terror. There’s no better news than cavity free!!

I floss daily (and everyone really should!) It is not only good for your teeth, but can also help your heart and lower your diabetes risk. Periodonitis is not something to mess around with!

Okay, now that we’re done with that, I’d rather go to the doctor. When I go it’s because something is wrong and I want it fixed. The dentist to me is just maintenance. Essential, but not as important as whatever might be wrong with me!
