I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
In case you missed it:
- Sadie’s Halloween costume has been determined
- My sister and I ran a 5k
- We celebrated Ryan’s birthday with my family
And now it’s Monday and back to the grind…
Breakfast
My breakfast this morning paid homage to my childhood.
Flavored instant oatmeal!
I paired a packet of Quaker strawberries ‘n’ cream instant oatmeal that I snagged from my parents’ house with a cup of Greek yogurt to make myself a fruity yogurt bowl!
I actually heated up the oats last night and let them chill in the fridge until this morning because I love cold oatmeal.
When I was growing up, my go-to breakfast was often instant oatmeal packets. I was also quite a fan of cinnamon toast, cheese toast or Toaster Strudels, but I was never a big cereal girl. Kind of odd!
Question of the Morning
When you were growing up, what was your go-to breakfast?
I always loved bagels or blueberry muffins…. mm…childhood 🙂
PS- I just checked out Sadie’s Halloween costume- I’m so impressed she wore it!! And of course she looks adorable 🙂
I used to really like grapenuts with raisins, walnuts, and bran chex…I know it’s a weirdly healthy breakfast for a kid but my mom used to eat it all the time and I just loved it!
We usually had cereal growing up cause it was quick and easy, but it never filled me up! My brother and I could choose from Rice Krispies, Honey Nut Cheerios, or Grape Nuts. In the winter, I usually chose Grape Nuts heated in the microwave with honey and fruit. 🙂
My no-so-healthy go to breakfast was Me Lucky Charms when I was younger. If I woke up in time, my Mom would make me a poached egg on toast. Yummy!
thats so funny! I had instant oatmeal for the first time in a while this morning!
but same with you my go to has always been instant oatmeal.
as a kid it was cheerios with spoonfuls of sugar or waffles as well as Instant Oatmeal
Fruity Pebbles or Corn muffins with butter and grape jelly. Mmmm I can smell it now!
My Mom always bought Corn Flakes! It’s a good thing I liked them 🙂
While growing up, I never ate breakfast! Ahh, sinful I know!!! Don’t worry, I eat breakfast everydayyy now! 🙂
Rice krispies and bananas, eggs benedict on the weekend…
way too many muffins when I got to junior high and high school 🙁 If I knew then what I know now
Pop-tarts or french toast sticks! Sometimes I still can’t resist either one!
Don’t think I’ve ever posted here, but this question brought back memories…
I was not a cereal kid either. Mom would sometimes have those instant oatmeal packets, but she would never measure the water as she was pouring it from the tea kettle, so my sister and I often ate oatmeal soup. Or, she was make French toast or pancakes when she woke up at 4.30am (an insomniac), but my sister and I would not eat until 6.30. We used to called them to French toast or pancake icebergs. Ha! 🙂
Thanks for reminding me of this 🙂
i always had a bagel with butter on it…yum! but i do remember i used to eat the strawberry oats when i was really young…so good!
When I was really young, I didn’t like to eat breakfast that much… But usually, it was some kind of bread with jam or honey, or cream cheese. When I was a bit older, some kind of cereal/muesli.
Now, I can’t go without a proper breakfast 🙂
I loved Toaster Strudels too as I wasn’t a cereal girl either. However, I will admit that most day I actually had Entenmann’s chocolate donuts. I’d have eggs every once in a while, but it wasn’t until college that I actually switched to oatmeal, toast or eggs on a regular basis.
What can I say? I have a huge sweet tooth!
back in the day i was overweight n overfed.ha…..my breakdasts were laid out on sundays by mom n pops…mondays were captin crunh milk n dip two pieces of butter covered pieces of toast..tuesdays was pancakes smoky links n toast..wensdays were wildberry poptarts n cold cherrios…thursdays were bacon fried eggs n tons of toast..n fridays were fresh glased n chocolate doughnuts…wow..not hard seeing y losing 110 lbs over the last 3 yrs was easy
I went through a major eggo waffle phase…it was bad, but then again, I think I was maybe 10 at the time. 🙂
Hi Julie!
I was wondering if you are planning on going to the FoodBuzz Festival in San Fran. I was planning on going but I was looking to see if anyone was interested in sharing a hotel room to cut costs. I’m not sure if you are going or if you know of anyone in a situation similar to me.
Thanks!
Mary
Toaster strudels! I was just confessing my love of those to some coworkers a few weeks ago. Did you know they make Cinnabon ones now? They’re amazing. Yes, I tried them. 😉
I’ve been a hot oats girl all my life..or hot cream of wheat..yummmmm
Well I had a kidney disease when I was a kid so I couldn’t have milk with my cereal. 🙁 So life was pretty boring when it came to breakfast.
But when I was 5 years old (when I didn’t have a kidney disease) I was obsessed with strawberries ‘n cream oatmeal!!!!!! 🙂
My go to breakfast was a Pop-Tart. I really don’t like them now, and I remember my stomach always growled before lunchtime. I didn’t really like breakfast as a kid…I know–who was I?!
Eggo minis (the four cute little waffles). I cut them apart and put yogurt between them to make a sandwich! So yummy!
My go to breakfast was toast with cinnamon and butter. 🙂
I used to love Pop Tarts and Cheerios! 😀
Poptarts! Everyday! I even asked for a supply of Poptarts for Christmas one year, and got huge bulk boxes from Sams! Haha
Cinnamon Toast Crunch!!
Milk and cereal all the way! Pancakes or eggs were pretty much weekend material only. And my mom refused to buy anything super sugary though so no Frosted Flakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruit Loops, or Toaster Streudels/ Pop Tarts for us. You can guess what I bought to eat my first year in college 😉 .
Pop tarts, haha. Or Nutri grain bars, always ate those!
Growing up my go to breakfast was always cereal. Usually something sugary.
And I have to say I love you dressing Sadie up as a bride. I didn’t have time to comment when I read that last night but I was laughing and had to show Peter.
Ha ha I was never a cereal eater either when I was younger. My go-to was strawberry flavored Pop-Tarts or a granola bar….my how things have changed. What fascinates me is how those measly pop-tarts or granola bars actually fueled me until lunch time??!!
Growing up I was a big fan of instant oatmeal (Cinnamon Apple) and Toaster Strudels! I would get into ruts and have the same thing for breakfast for months at a time! 🙂 Great idea mixing a packet of instant oatmeal with greek yogurt – 1 packet alone NEVER fills me up.
I would ALWAYS go for Toaster Strudels 😀 the strawberry was my favorite, and I would make sure to get ALL THE ICING out of the little packet 😉
I love mixing the strawberries and cream + blueberries and cream oatmeal, too! I did that as a child as well.
Ohhh breakfast memories!
Cookies + Milk. Really!
I actually didn’t have oatmeal until 2008! Isn’t that crazy? This may sound odd, but my favorite childhood breakfast was called “cocoa and toast”–it was three pieces of buttered white toast (preferably wonder bread and lots of butter) and a mug of quik+2% milk heated up. I would dunk the toast in the cocoa. People are revolted when I tell them this, but it is soo good.
I love cold oatmeal too! I would much rather eat any food cold actually than hot, its kinda weird!
We were definitely Quaker Instant Oatmeal kids too! My favorite was the banana walnut flavor. I would always eat 2 packets and cover it all with milk!
We always had huge bowls of cold cereal! No portion control at all. And of course white bread toasted with lots of butter. And I dunked the toast in the cereal milk.
Haha..Exactly, My parents would let me eat as much as i wanted, let me scoop on the pure sugar, id put enough sugar in so that when i was done with the cereal Id have enough sugar in the bottom of the bowl to get like 2 scoops of sugar and milk……and then i thought we were the only ones who dunked thick buttered white bread in the milk…oh good times
haha i always loved toaster streudels!
I was a big cereal eater growing up. I also liked those Carnation Instant Breakfast things.
I was never big on breakfast as a kid, but always something quick like cereal, toast with butter, or a Poptart if I ate it.
I always had cereal…lots! My mom let us get whatever kinds we wanted so we got Fruity Pebbles, Cookie Crisp, Frosted Flakes and other sugary cereals. When we stayed with our mamaw she’d tell us to put some sugar on our Frosted Flakes!!! Good thing we were active!!
Peanut butter on a slice of toast and warm chocolate milk.
Both my mom and dad make the best scrambled eggs EVER! Cheesy and not runny, they are still the most delicious eggs. I used to look forward to them every Saturday and Sunday morning!
My family relied on processed foods, so it was probably Toaster Strudels or Pop-Tarts.
My mom always made us a hearty breakfast with fruit so it was usually an egg and turkey sandwich or buttered whole wheat toast with cottage cheese!
I was quite a chubby kid and didn’t know better…
Little Debbie Swiss Roll Cakes were my go-to breakfast. In high school I traded up to a white bagel with strawberry cream cheese.
I just want to thank you for introducing me to this wonderful mixture of oatmeal and Greek yogurt. I absolutely LOVE for my oatmeal to have a thicker consistency, but could never think of a really good way to go about doing that without just putting in less milk or water, and mixing these two ingredients gives me a wonderfully filling meal, so thank you!
awesome!
