After Sadie’s intense trash talking this morning, I decided to suck it up and brave a run in the crazy heat.
St. Pete may be one of my favorite places to run in the world.
You can run along the water for miles and watch as fish jump and dolphins come up for air (seriously!) and there are always a bunch of other people running and biking which I find really motivating.
The only problem? From May through September the weather is H-O-T. If you don’t get your workout done before 8 a.m., the heat and humidity can be too intense to handle.
For some reason the thought of working out in a gym today made me cringe. I was in the mood to be outside, even if the sun was intense.
I knew Sadie would welcome some exercise, so I leashed her up and we completed 5 miles of running/walking around the pier in downtown St. Petersburg.
Physically, the run didn’t feel too hard, but the heat definitely slowed me down. I was also very aware of Sadie’s reaction to the heat, so we took quite a few water breaks and even sat under a shady tree for a few minutes about three quarters of the way through our run.
Sadie can handle the distance of a long run (she did every long run of my last half marathon training plan with me), but the heat gets to her.
Even though I was a hot mess at the end of our run/walk, I was really glad that I got out there. Outdoor cardio exercise is so much more entertaining than plugging away at the gym on a treadmill or an elliptical to me.
Snack + Lunch
When Sadie and I arrived home, I immediately ate a mini Reese’s peanut butter cup while plating a bowlful of crisp and cool grapes.
Mmm.
No grapes for Miss Sadie though. Grapes + Dogs = Bad idea! Did you know that grapes/raisins when ingested by dogs can lead to kidney failure?
I think Sadie subconsciously knew that she shouldn’t eat grapes because before Ryan and I knew that they were dangerous for dogs, we would toss her a grape and she never knew how to eat them. She’d roll them around in her mouth and spit them out.
After showering and working for another couple of hours, my mom was a sweetheart and decided to make us a nice sit down lunch! She made a batch of her homemade chicken noodle soup which we enjoyed along with tuna salad and crackers.
My mom’s soup recipe is my all-time favorite. It’s so simple, but simply delicious.
She changes it up from time to time by adding different vegetables or noodles, but the essence of the soup is always the same. I had two bowlfuls and am now quite full.
Time to knock back a few more hours of work. We’re hoping to possibly head to IKEA later tonight before RYAN gets here! I can’t wait to see that handsome fella.
I think Sadie will pass out from excitement when he walks through the door.
Lindsay says
I went to Ikea for the first time on Monday. (I’m moving into a new place on the 1st, as well.) That place is AWESOME! And a little overwhelming…
Cait @ Beyond BAnanas says
It is crucial to note our pups reaction to the weather was well! Good thing Sadie trash talked you in to getting out there! Despite the heat..it sure looks like you have some amazing scenery.
Meg says
Good for you for getting out in the heat AND humidity. I don’t know how you do it (I live in a thankfully dry climate) and I love the Sadie comments! And yes I did know grapes/raisins are bad for dogs but I’m glad you put the word out!
p.s. my dog just ate– stole half a snickers bar the other day thankfully he only threw up and that was the end of it yikes!
Ruthie Hart says
okay 2 things….#1 you should post your mamas recipe unless it is super secret! that soup looks delish! and #2 I have been dying to go to IKEA! I dont need anything specifically but I love their knick knacks! let me know what you buy! oh and be sure to get some meatballs!
KaraHadley says
My dog never ate the grapes we used to give him, but I think it had more to do with him not being able to bite the around grapes with his pointy teeth. Either way, it’s good, because I’m sure we gave him a ton when he was young.
Also, dogs aren’t really supposed to have onions or garlic.
Lorin says
Oh, I can’t imagine running in that heat! I ran today in SoCal and it was about 75-80. I came home super sweaty and I definitely could not wait 2 hours to have lunch 🙂 That’s fun to have a running buddy; Sadie is so cute!
Lorin says
Oh and I made your nutella granola! So good, I burnt it a little bit because I checked it at the 10 minute mark and it was already burnt :/ My oven runs hotter than others though, it’s still delish!
megan says
hahah the sadie quotes are so funny!
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
Any chance your mom will be sharing her chicken noodle soup recipe anytime soon? That looks delicious! 😉
Rachel says
Your St Pete run looks beautiful!! And Sadie is ADORABLE like usual. I agree with some of the other commentators, your Sadie captions are hilarious and I love them!
Kara says
Seriously … Sadie’s captions continue to amaze me … like funniest things ever! 🙂
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
I always used to hate/be unable to run in the heat until I starting running much more frequently. Once you get used to the idea of being a hot sweaty mess, the heat doesn’t make as big of a difference anymore, and you’re a lot more educated about how to pace yourself and adequately hydrate 🙂 I still don’t think I could run in the Florida summer heat though! CHAMP!
Beth (Well I'll Be) says
Julie, Sadie’s captions were extra funny this post!!! I don’t eat chicken, but I totally want a bowl of your mom’s soup!
Lynn says
I LOVE reading your blog DAILY…you are VERY inspiring to me and my motivator!!! I also LOVE the captions from Sadie…man, she has a mind of her own!
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
Dude, your Sadie captions kill me! She really does look like she’s saying that stuff.
BTW – Your mom’s soup looks so good. I love soups that are thick like that, not all watered down and you have to dig to find anything good. Yum!
Danielle says
Ok, my coworkers all think I’m a weirdo now because of that last Sadie picture/caption… hilarious! Enjoy your weekend with your hubby 🙂
Amy says
Sadie’s captions literally make me laugh out loud every time but she is killing it today!!! LOVE her sassiness 🙂
Heather @ The World Through My Eyes says
I’m with you! I really have to MAKE myself get to the gym, especially during the summer months. Being so close to the mountains makes it almost impossible–I’d much rather go hiking or trail running or mountain biking than stare at my own face in a mirror by the treadmill 🙂
Bonnie says
I’m seeing this throughout all your comments, but the captions you write for Sadie are hilarious! 😀 Love the last one especially. Enjoy time with your man – time apart is always hard but it’s always so GREAT to be together again. 🙂
Lindsay@ In Sweetness and In Health says
Omg isn’t that crazy about grapes and dogs? My dog actually ate some onion pieces once and went into kidney failure…thank god we got her to vet soon enough!! After that we learned about all the foods that are deathly dangerous to them. Have you ever tried the dark chocolate mini reese’s cups? They are fabulous :). Have SO much fun seeing Ryan!
Maria says
Sadie quotes rock my socks off. Seriously. I want her. Please have her make puppies. Please.
Holly @ Pink Runner says
Oh my gosh please keep the Sadie comments. They are so funny!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
I love Sadie, the talking puppy!! 😉 You have quite the gifted dog on your hands!
Nicole says
I love that you and Sadie run together! Charlie (my springer spaniel) is my running partner. We are training for a marathon right now and I’m starting to have water issues. On shorter distances I carry one bottle that Charlie drinks out of- but now that we’re getting into higher mileage, I need water too! I try to pick routes with fountains, but my options are limited- do you have any suggestions? I’ve been looking all over for a harness of some sort that she could carry her own water in, but no luck yet.
peanutbutterfingers says
i totally know what you mean! fortunately our run today was along public trails, so there were lots of water fountains around. i’ve heard of people driving and stashing waterbottles ahead of time, but that seems like it would be a lot of work…
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Nice captions!
I would’ve stayed inside…..b/c I hate running in the heat, but I DO love beautiful weather!
Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says
Sadie quotes always brighten my day! 🙂
Ali @ Ali Runs says
What a beautiful running area!! I hate running in the heat, but for views like that I think I would brave it. 😉 Love the Sadie pics!
Aubree says
Good job on your hot run! Sadie is so cute. I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy (8 months) named Eleanor. Like Sadie, Eleanor LOVES, LOVES, LOVES her humans and wants to be with us all the time. And like Sadie, Eleanor has the cutest smile ever. She is super stubborn and isn’t interested in learning how to shake or play dead, but when we walk I will say, “Eleanor, show me your puppy smile!” And she turns to look at me with that giant mouthed smile of hers. My fiance doesn’t consider that a trick, but Eleanor and I do!
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
That soup looks delicious! Are those mushrooms that I see? That’s such a good addition!
Dee says
I’ve never heard that “use me as your beard” saying before Sadie said it! She is too cute! Thanks for the heads up about dogs and grapes. My boy loves fruits!! Now I’ll know to keep grapes away from that little vacuum 🙂
jessica says
I just have to tell you, your sadie captions today cracked me up! Like out loud, in my car, at stop lights haha. Im an elementary school teacher and after a very long exhausting day, that little laugh was just what I needed! So thank you 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i’m so glad! i always feel like teaching would be such an amazing job, but totally draining at the same time because you always have to be “on.”
Maria@La_Piattini says
Ahh Ikea… it’s one of those stores that I can go to for one item and come out a million dollars later! Same thing with Wegmans and Target. Don’t know what it is about those stores!

Your scenery during your run sounds awesome, and I can relate to your lunch–my mom makes some fabulous chicken soup! Haha

We have plans for Ikea this weekend too! I can’t believe how hot it still is…I’m ready for fall (or I guess winter since Florida doesn’t really get fall!)
Melissa says
Lol to that last Sadie caption. Her stance completely says that. Even though its 100 degrees in Louisiana i am now taking my chicken noodles soup out of the freezer.

Even if there’s quite a heat, I’d just love to go running in a beautiful place like this!

I know it’s a little late, but I’m finally catching up reading some blogs, and I had to say I LOVE Sadie’s speech bubbles pictures!! She’d so expressive and I’m glad she gets to put in her two cents on the blog. 🙂
