Somebody hurry and revive my credit card! I just dropped entirely too much money on a race entry fee.
But check out the location of the race…
Vegas, baby!
I will already be in Las Vegas for the Urban Running: Blogger Summit that weekend (I’m speaking at the conference… but not about running… unless you care to learn about how to stop caring about your time and how to use Disney music for running motivation.) I know a bunch of other bloggers who are attending the conference are also running the race, so I hopped on board.
The race is just about a month after the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon, so I won’t have to completely re-train my body.
Another cool thing about this race? It’s at night! Running down the Las Vegas strip at night sounds entirely too cool. Plus, I fell in love with Rock ‘n’ Roll races after running the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon and I have a feeling this race course will be unbelievably entertaining.
Even still, I’m sad that I paid more to enter this race than a week’s worth of groceries.
At least it’s for a good cause.
Lunch
Today’s lunch was pretty darn random, but pretty darn delicious.
Tuna salad paired with Annie Chun’s sprouted brown sticky rice that the company sent me to try.
The rice was awesome! Perfectly sticky and ready in one minute. I actually ended up stirring it into my tuna salad and loved the nuttiness that the rice added to the salad.
I feel like I should’ve used the rice in an authentic Asian dish since Annie Chun’s products are “all natural Asian cuisine,” but I was too antsy to wait to use it in a stir fry. Next time!
Question of the Afternoon
- What is the most amount of money you would spend to enter a race or a competition for something you trained for?
For me it all comes down to the race. For a 5k, since they’re over so quickly, I can’t get over spending much more than $25. For a half marathon I would say my limit is $100, but I just proved that wrong today. Oops.
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
i feel like the entry fee is totally dictated by the market. i live in chicago and races here cost me an arm and a leg, but head over to northwest indiana and a marathon is $50!
Stefanie-Anne says
What topic are you speaking about? Curious!
Kalie says
i COULD NEVER RUN A MARATHON OR EVEN HALF 🙁
JEALOUS OF YOU RUNNERS:(
Lily says
yes you can! if you want to, just set your mind to it! 🙂
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Wow! That seems like alot of dough to me! Haha I have really never trained for anything that required cash so I guess I am no help!
Stefanie-Anne says
p.s. isn’t this SO cute!

I’m running that race as well and looking to attend the conference too!! Can’t wait to meet you!

Ah Julie this post is so relevant to me!! i just signed up for my first half in Philly and it was over 100 dollars! So much $$$$$$ GUAP right there, it stresses me out, but also motivates me to get my tail feather out there and run!
At least Las Vegas will be awesome, maybe you can gamble and win back your race fee 🙂 if you are lucky!!!
Heather @ The World Through My Eyes says
I LOVE Annie Chun’s food! I buy those things all the time, even though I feel guilty about the whole “90 seconds and dinner is ready” concept 🙂 The pad thai is pretty tasty!
I get a little frustrated sometimes when I sign up for triathlons because, as a rule, the registration fees are so expensive compared to other races. I suppose it is because they have multiple timing mats, transition areas, etc. The HIM I’m looking at next summer is a cool $250! The Tough Mudder was my most expensive one this year and that was $115. Ouch.
Cait's Plate says
The worst part of racing to me are the fees! I would maybe spend $100 TOPS if I were paying out of pocket and not raising money for charity.
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Oh wow, I had no idea marathons were so expensive!! At least its for a good cause! 🙂
Nathan Miller says
Nice…There ya go. Im running the Half they have in downtown Indy in October, and also they have one the weekend before Thanksgiving! But both are no where near that price….I cut it off at 70 bucks per run. Anymore, and I feel, I can go run that far for free, and then treat myself to a VERY nice dinner and icecream later on. Goodluck though! And goodluck breaking the news to Ryno
Mallory @ It's Only Life says
Whenever I cross the finish line during a half marathon, the feeling is ALWAYS a reminder that the price was worth it! the confidence boost& pure joy makes it well-worth it! 😀

You will LOVE the RnR Las Vegas race! I have gone out there for the past 2 years and ran as a part of Team Challenge to benefit the CCFA. It’s a flat and fast course and will be even better this year at night. There is nothing like running down the Vegas strip with no cars … you’ll also see a lot of people stumbling around and cheering you on as they’re bar-crawling. They go all-out on the course … you’ll see a lot of people running as Elvis and there’s always a run-through wedding chapel. I couldn’t run with Team Challenge this year, but the organization holds a really special place in my heart … and has a huge presence there which really turns the energy up during the race!

I am dying for tuna salad!! I love it with celery when it’s super cold. My mom makes the BEST tuna salad! I think I need to make a trip to the grocery before night class!!
Nicole says
I have forked over the money for THREE RnR races. They really are pro’s at putting on a race. Be sure the grab enough free stuff at the expo to offset the cost.

That sounds like a blast! I am doing the Rock and Roll Full in Denver in 2.5 weeks!! Ahhhh…for sure the most I have spent on a race :-/ At least I can count it as a concert too!
alyssa - fashion fitness foodie says
Have you ever ran the Disney princess half?? I’m about to sign up but have never ran longer than 5 miles!!
Kate says
I’ll be at Vegas too! I was supposed to run the Marathon but due to an injury I’m running the half. Maybe I’ll see you there 🙂
Haley says
I wouldn’t spend over $100 for an event for only me… but I’ve definitely spent more than that when horses are involved.
I’ve tried to convince my husband that horses are an integral part of the budget, but APPARENTLY food and rent are more important.
Mandy Robinson says
Wow that sounds so cool. The running at night down the strip sounds so awesome. Yeah I definitely don’t get to spend that kind of money since I had a baby. Hopefully you will get some pictures and I can live through your experience. 🙂 Enjoy!
Blair says
This is probably a silly question, but what makes the R&R races so cool?? 🙂
Kristin @ STUFT Mama says
Oh my goodness- yes racing is so expensive! 🙂 Ugh. I’ve paid up to $130 before. You’re reminding me I need to sing up for a few races. I’m not looking forward to the bills. ha!
Kristin @ STUFT Mama says
Duh- I mean “sign”. oops.
Kelly says
I think that an expensive race can be justified every now & again! Think about how much the training keeps you motivated to keep running, you can’t put a price on that 🙂
Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says
That race will be such a blast! 🙂 The only thing I would be nervous about would be eating before it. I am not good with running and much food in my tummy. The most I would pay to participate in a race is 150-200 dollars.
Sara @ RunnerWife says
Vegas would be an awesome race to run!! Have a blast! hopefully I can make it out there one day!
Brooke says
I’m SOOO jealous! Vegas is my favorite place on earth. And it’s the first place that my husband and I lived to together! Running down the strip in the morning was always interesting, because I always got to see people still drunk at 6am, making their way back to their hotel. hehe. It was a bit challenging with streetlights and intersections like every 2 feet, but on race day, you’ll have no problems. Can’t wait to see pics of this!!
B n B says
Is Vegas a far distance from you? I can’t imagine traveling far…but I sure would love to! Have fun 🙂
Claire @ livingspreethegoodlife.wordpress.com says
I’m running the marathon, that is, if my knee can get better otherwise I just have to do the half (which should still be fun). The race is sooooo expensive isn’t it? I actually just bought my plane ticket two days ago and I’m going early so I can PARTAY 🙂 Hope to see ya there!
Lexie @ This Aussie Eats says
Ahh I was going to make this my first ever half marathon but then when I looked into it further i realized it is on a Sunday night and I have to be back in Phoenix for work on the Momday morning so it wouldn’t work out. I’m SUPER bummed I can’t do it though! The last leg of the race is right down the strip!
Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Muches & Moves says
For some reason, I don’t mind spending a lot on races and I am CHEAP! I think it’s motivation. I tell myself that I spent all this money, so I better push hard! and I would definitely be willing to spend more for Vegas…I love the Vegas!
Kari Burghardt says
Some races are worth the $100! I agree with you on the 5k…no more than $25. Good luck with both races coming up, they sound amazing! 🙂

Like you said , at least it is for a good cause…they gain and you gain (in terms of achievement)! Awesome that sticky rice is available in brown rice form…love the stuff!
Jessy (squeezetheday) says
I just checked the fee at their site … wow.
Tara says
That race sounds amazing!!! But the most I have paid was $50 for a half marathon 🙂 I’ll get to $100 someday I’m sure!
Kait says
i know isn’t it crazy how much the rock n roll series costs? i always put off signing up for them because of the coast, and then realize it gets way more expensive the more I wait! I am about to suck it up and pay for Arizona RnR … there goes a nice pair of jeans I could have bought! 🙂
Danielle says
So this may sound weird but I hate running, always have, yet part of me wants to run one of these marathons just to prove to myself that I can do it.
