This morning at the gym I read something interesting in Runner’s World.
The magazine said that after a race, runners should take it easy for the number of days that correspond to the number of miles in their race. For example, half marathoners should take it easy for 13 days following their race.
I’m assuming this applies to races run hard, as I’d think that a race run at a leisurely pace wouldn’t need as much recovery time.
I read this excerpt while doing light cardio on the adaptive motion trainer and am taking it to heart. My quads are still pretty darn sore from the Women’s Half Marathon and I have a feeling I won’t be running hard for a good week or so.
(If you’d like lessons on how to look like a complete goober in race photos, please email me. I’ll give you a good price.)
For Thursday’s Turkey Trot, my plan is to simply run for fun and have a great time.
Speaking of the Turkey Trot, I’m headed to St. Pete today and will be assembling Turkey Trot costumes with my sister this evening.
Items currently purchased:

Things are about to get interesting!
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning was supposed to include cheese. Apparently in my quest for anything salty yesterday, I ate it all and was left cheeseless this morning.
Luckily I had some olive tapenade Tibe hummus on hand and used that in place of cheese on my breakfast sandwich.
My two eggs did a good job of hiding the top half of my whole wheat English muffin that I basically finished before toasting anyway due to my odd English muffin habit.
Hope your day is off to a good start!

Hummus is so great on breakfast sandwiches. Especially if you put feta in the eggs 😀
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I would look disasterous after 13 miles – you look like you’re out for a leisurely stroll! 🙂
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
I’m considering a Turkey Trot, I want to dress as syphilis in honor of what we REALLY gave the Native Americans, but I can’t picture the costume. JUST KIDDING! I’m going as a turkey.
QueenofFitness says
THIS is hilarious!!!!! i just spit on my computer laughing
…syphilis.
Callie @ The Wannabe Athlete says
I’m so glad to hear you love the Sing Off too! Those two performances were incredible, but I loved Afro Blue too! Their song made my husband almost cry – it’s one of his favorites.

Sweat is sexy girl 🙂
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
Pentatonix FTW!!
I haven’t watched my DVR’d Sing Off from last night yet, but I’ve been pulling for them since the start- Ah-Mazing.

I love that your “of possible interest” links include the Sing Off!

LOVE that show 🙂

I think that some might take the “recovery” a little too far. I took one day off after my half and then did other non-running activities for a few more days. My first real run was a week later, although I did try before that. It just didn’t feel right. So for me, it doesn’t mean sit on the couch and do nothing. I do other things.

Oh my gosh, your face with the word ‘proof’ over it is just priceless. The look of sheer excitement and relief to be done I’d say!
Jamie @ FoodinRealLife says
I demolished an english muffin from the inside out last night too. It was just a shell of its former self by the time I ate it. I need to break that habit!
Dani says
Which Turkey Trot are you doing? My family does one every year in Clearwater. I didn’t know if there was another one in St. Pete.
peanutbutterfingers says
we’re doing one in sarasota near where my in-laws live – the ALSO Turkey Trot!
Hope says
Hummus with eggs sounds like an interesting combination. I’m going to have to try it! 🙂
Annie says
haha it made me laugh that you do that with your muffins because I do EXACTLY the same thing and thought it was a completely OCD habit lol!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Sounds like you’ve got an interesting costume coming up! For the whole rest and race mileage thing, I have sort of followed it in the past, but taking 26 days off after a marathon seemed a bit much for me! I tend to go easier (as in no HIIT or intervals) for the week following, but after that, do what my body feels it can do. It again, may not be anything crazy, but if I’m feeling good, you can bet I’ll be running again! Have a great day Julie!
Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee says
I am a huge fan of the Dartmouth Aires! They’re just so energetic and fun. Their Queen performance is my favorite of the season so far.
I’m definitely breaking the Runner’s World recovery rule. I ran a marathon 9 days ago and I’m racing a Turkey Trot on Thursday and I’m running RnR Las Vegas. Oops!
Megan says
I definitely think the amount of recovery time needed is personal to every person, but sometimes you do need a good long break. That’s at least my plan after my brutal marathon yesterday.
And that hummus looks delicious with eggs!
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile says
If I was that sore, I’d take it easy too! I’m sure it depends on how sore you are after the race though. Those songs are awesome. I don’t watch that show but I really enjoyed watching those performances just now! I’m running a Turkey Trot for fun too. It’s only a 5k though, so it’ll be a quick one!
chelsea says
I can not wait to see your turkey trot outfit!
Jamie @ Don't Forget The Cinnamon says
Can’t wait to see the costume you come up with!
Becky @ Fit Chick on the Fly says
Very creative breakfast combination! 🙂 13 days of rest…. during the holidays….no thanks! LOL I’d turn into a big ham!
Lisa @ experiencelifewithme says
I don’t think I could go 13 days without running. I ran my first Half on Sunday, and I rested one day. 🙂 I guess I’m a glutton for punishment. I was back out there this morning, sore legs and all.
Have to start Full Marathon training! No rest for me!
Hilliary @Happily Ever Healthy says
That is interesting what runners world said about rest days! Good information, thanks for sharing! I hope you have a wonderful day!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
That is an interesting find! Perfect since your recovery time is falling over the week of Thanksgiving. 😉
Kerry @ Half Healthy, Half Nuts says
You always looks so happy in your race photos! My races photos are super scary, and I look like I am having the worst time ever. Seriously, is that what I look like when I run? Yeesh! That said, I am totally jealous of your glamour shot running photos!! 🙂 🙂
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
i love that picture! i have heard that about post-race recovery. i usually max out at a week, though. i can’t see taking 26 days completely off of running after a marathon. to each her own, though!
Jenny says
I typically run the Turkey Trot with my dad every year but we’ve never done costumes! That is hilarious..think I could get him to wear feathers…hmmm Enjoy1
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I feel like 13 days is a long time! and if you run a marathon, you’d have to take off a month from running! Have fun at the Turkey Trot!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
My quads are killing me today after Sunday’s race and that article is making me worry considering I just literally purchased the entry into the Palm Beach half on Dec. 4th! Eek! Hopefully the almost 2 weeks will be enough time to recuperate because I have big plans for that (flat) race. 🙂
Anne says
Hi ,
I’d like to ask what a typical morning snack for you is like (for example this morning, or yesterdy morning, etc). I’m struggling with midmorning snack ideas.
I’ve been eating a lot of grains lately and I’m thinking I should cut back maybe? (I’m not a runner or cardio person other than walking).
I tried to make a single-serving oatmeal muffin recipe this morning that turned out “just okay”. I used 20 g (3 tablespoons ) of oat flour, 1/2 tablespoon of oil, and 1/4 cup egg beaters, and a mini-box of raisins.
A bit weird? I know, I know. I got curious and didn’t want to dump it out, so it was okay, but not quite right.
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
Thanks for linking to my baked oatmeal! That reminded me to make it again!! 😉
Can’t wait to see how the Turkey Trot outfits turn out!

Sounds like your costume is going to be awesome! I love getting crafty 🙂
My race photos from my Halloween 5k are terrible. I was actually looking at my Garmin in one…guess I was planning my finish strategy or something, it’s ridiculous!
Jodi says
I haven’t had a chance to tell you because I’ve been so busy….CONGRATS! So incredibly cool of you to run another marathon :-).

How fun that you’re wearing costumes!
Also I think you look very glam in that finishing picture. I’d be thrilled with that one!
Heather says
i am getting REALLY excited for turkey trot costume photos 🙂
Heather@girlyeverafter says
My husband and I ran our first half last Thanksgiving and my knee gave out at mile 4 so I took my number off so my picture couldn’t be taken. This year I’m feeling good about my training and will be cheesing it up for al the photogs!
Hillary says
My legs hurt for a good week after my first half marathon—I found it hard to SIT for at least four of them! But thirteen days seems a bit excessive, no?
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I’m so excited to see how your turkey trot thanksgiving costumes turn out!! And I love your end of race picture, I think its cute!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
OH can’t wait to see the costumes!!
I think you look cute in your race picture–and so happy 🙂

I’ve never heard of that rule of thumb before! Interesting!

Well that explains why all my post marathon runs have been dragging! I still have until Dec. 2 according to Runners World until I’m fully recovered!
Jen@FoodFamilyFitness says
You look awesome in that race photo!!!
Angela @ My Pinky Toes says
I’ve heard this stat before, but I can’t remember where. I always like my rest days after a race, but I don’t think I’ve ever gone the full amount according to the stat. Sometimes I get bored during rest days!!!

i can’t wait to see your turkey trot costumes!!! sounds like so much fun!

I have been inspired to run a half marathon, looking for one for the summer months. I live in washington and it is so hard to train in the winter! I was thinking about the one in SF I heard the give out a Tiffany’s necklace!
