Last night we ate cake.
We had a healthy dinner too, I promise, but the cake is really what’s worth mentioning.
You know the kind of cake that keeps you going back for “just a taste” or “just a sliver more” after you’ve already had two slices?
Yeah, that was this cake.
The kind people at Daisy Cakes apparently caught wind of my sweet tooth and sent me their January cake of the month, the Banana Bee, to try.
I have a soft spot for gourmet desserts and when I looked at the Daisy Cakes website, I had a feeling they knew what they were doing in the kitchen. They use minimal ingredients and their cakes look like an incredibly delicious work of art.
Ryan and I were both immensely impressed with the Banana Bee cake’s authentic banana flavor, the moist, buttery cake and the crunchy, caramely topping.
Oh the topping!
The crumbly topping was easily our favorite part and was full of walnuts and coconut.
We could not stop eating it!
The only negative aspect of the cakes in my mind is their price (approximately $45), though this does seem in line with other gourmet cakes I’ve seen. Still, I can’t help but think of the movie The Father of the Bride when Franck, the wedding planner, tells George, the dad, the price of the wedding cake and George flips out, saying, “A cake, Franck, is made of flour and water.”
But one of their cakes would be a wonderful treat for a special occasion… like a baby shower, bridal shower or Easter dessert. For something special, I probably would shell out the money to bring a quality dessert that I knew would knock people’s socks off.
Clearly I’m a fan!
Breakfast
I actually managed to incorporate the topping from the Banana Bee cake into my breakfast this morning by crumbling it on top of my oatmeal!
I made my oats by combining milk, oats, vanilla protein powder and peanut butter in a bowl and microwaving everything until the mixture thickened.
It tasted like dessert in a bowl.
Workout
A quality workout was in order this morning!
Before breakfast, Ryan and I drove to the gym and started our workout with 20 minutes on the arc trainer.
Then it was time for a leg workout:
For some reason step ups just kill me! They’re not particularly hard on my legs, but I get so winded. Phew!
Resurrecting Blog Talk Tuesdays
I would love to resurrect the Blog Talk Tuesdays series I did on the blog a while back where I address common blog-related topics, inquiries and obstacles.
I am simply at a loss for what else you guys might be interested in me touching on to make the series really come back! I suppose Blog Talk Tuesdays posts will just pop up randomly on select Tuesdays like they have been as I think of topics, but creating some kind of predictable consistency would be great if I had enough topics to address back-to-back. I guess it will all depend on how many topics pop up. Or maybe the series has run its course?
Past topics include:
- How to Start a Blog, Blog Focus, Self Hosting and More
- Blogger Safety
- Company Outreach: Receiving Free Products, Hosting Giveaways, Posting Product Reviews and More
- Connecting with Other Bloggers
- Rising Above Negativity
- Balancing Blogging and Real Life
- How to Increase Blog Readership
- Freelance Writing 101
(You may always find all of these posts on my Blogging page under the “Favs” tab.)
Two topics I have on my radar include:
- Pictures (Organization, favorite cameras, storage, editing, etc.)
- Money (I’ve wanted to address this one for a while, but honestly think I might be better off directing you guys to the webinar Katy Widrick put together on her blog on the topic. It is amazing and addresses everything I would say and then some. I would highly encourage you to check out her post if you’re interested in monetizing your blog because she basically says everything I would say… and more!)
I’m open to any additional ideas you guys have for Blog Talk Tuesdays topics, so please feel free to let me know if anything comes to mind. I feel like I’m at a bit of a stand-still at the moment and think this may be a series I retire for a while unless anything else pops up!

although that cake does look delicious, that is a high price!!! Haha I bet you could make that yourself!

Soo going to try this leg workout in a day or two…just did legs yesterday. And boy could I not agree more! Step ups with 15 lb dumbbells woof! I was sooo winded by set 4. But after it felt great 🙂 Love that about working out.
Happy Thursday everyone!

I love that you reference Father of the Bride! I do that and my husband looked at me and said, “That’s not a movie people quote.” Like Star Wars is the only one!

Oh my gosh, I want one of those cakes! That sounds so yummy, but the name is what really sells me.. so cute!
Lauren @ Chocolate, Cheese and Wine says
That cake looks delicious but I’m not so sure about the price. Do you think you could make up a copycat recipe?
Dawn says
Hi Julie, what is a hamstring ball curl? I looked it up, but wasn’t sure which was the proper way to do it.
Franny says
This looks like the cake of my dreams! I don’t know if I can swing $45 for it, but I’m glad y’all got to enjoy it! I might try and find a similar recipe online, now, as I’m in the mood for banana cake and I have a lot of ripe bananas just sitting around dying to be used 🙂

Pictures and money sound like great topics, so do any blogger tips and tricks! That cake looks mouth watering and Father of the Bride is one of my momma’s guilty pleasures to curl up on the couch watching 😀 FRANCKKK!

I heard about Daisy Cakes when they were on the show Shark Tank and immediately went to their website. When seeing the price, I decided it was too expensive of a cake to order for just myself and my husband. Maybe Daisy Cakes should offer a free cake to one of your readers (and me since I’ve been wanting to try the Jilly Vanilly since I heard about them!). It sounds like a REALLY great idea, don’t ya think?! 🙂 And my hubby’s birthday is coming up on the 25th of this month…hint, hint!! 😛

My mouth is watering just looking at the Bumble Bee Daisy cake!
Although I’m not a blogger, I love reading yours and would like to know how to locate blogs that are local to me. I am in the midwest and would like to hear about products/stores/places that are closer to home.

definitely check out healthylivingblogs.com! they list blogs by state!

Some ideas for BTT that I enjoy reading about:
– Social Media Musts: how do you advertise PBF (obviously I know Facebook and Twitter because I follow you there.) but what do you think about Stumbleupon, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Foursquare etc in relation to stats, PR and booking freelance positions. (I am using “you” as a relative term to mean a blogger I guess.)
-Deisgn and layout: someone gave this idea above and I love it! I’m sure people would love to ear about when starting with PBF, decidin on a brand/image, prices that are reasonable depending on what you want to do with your blog. Owning your own domain.
-SEO & topics: categorizing blog posts, linking within to other posts, blog series and why it’s a good idea (like how you told your wedding in several posts LOVE!)
– Money: there are mentions above but I’m more interested in blog budget breakdowns. You mentioned having a PBF account. What do you set aside for domains/web hosting/ photo equipment, blog conferences etc.
I’m officially that crazy person taking up your comments section…

Hey Julie!
I’ve been a reader for about 8 months or so – I love it when 2 o’clock rolls around and I know there’s some PB waiting in my mailbox! Thanks for putting together a great blog….I enjoy it! 🙂
Just wanted to say thanks for putting together the “Blog Talk Tuesdays”, too. One of my goals this year is to get my blog up and rolling. I have a few posts going so far, but I’m finding that it’s hard without a camera. (I’m saving my pennies so I can buy one next month!)
Anyway – thanks for being out there and in my inbox! 🙂
Katy @ A Shot of Life says
Can’t wait to see more of Blog Talk Tuesdays! I’d definitely be interested in a post on pictures- they always seem to be such a hassle for me! Also, maybe a post on how you balance everything, or more specifically, how you stay on top of your blog and also maintain a life (and job, and boyfriend, and friends, etc). 🙂
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I love your Blog Talk Tuesdays posts! I just created a blog (so I don’t have much there yet!) but your posts ALL helped.
One thing that might be interesting is how you go about creating your own recipes when you share them with us. Do you start with a base recipe or just go for it? Any special things you take into consideration?
