Day three of boot camp took a pretty good shot at my confidence!
I am becoming increasingly aware that my previous workouts didn’t focus nearly enough on stability.
I felt like a no-talent ass clown (Office Space, anyone?) today as I attempted to do single leg split squats on the stability ball while holding two 15-pound dumbbells.
I wobbled all over the place looking like a looney… and then picked up the stability ball and punted it across the gym in frustration after I completed the final set. Just kidding about the punting (not the looking like a looney).
It was a humbling experience to say the least!
I think I may decrease the weight of the dumbbells I used or do the move with no weight at all as I raise and lower my body slowly to see if that helps me feel more secure next time.
Breakfast
I think I earned a tasty breakfast after this morning’s workout and fixed myself a delicious plate of two Van’s whole grain waffles after Ryan and I arrived home from the gym.
I topped my waffles with ricotta cheese, a sliced nectarine and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.
I think Ryan was a little jealous of my breakfast this morning. It was a good one fo’ sho’!
Time to get to work! I have an afternoon meeting for my volunteer work with the Taste of Ocala and hope to check a bunch of things off my to-do list before heading out.
Question of the Morning
- What was the last humbling experience you had during a workout?
Chelsa says
I was at a resort last week and they have a beautiful lap pool. Swimming is quite a workout even if you’re a fitness champion. The next day my whole body felt like jello.
Alexa @ Simple Eats says
I did the workout this morning, too and those split squats kicked my butt! I did them with no dumbells, too, so I can only imagine how are they are with em!
Athena @ Fitness & Feta says
I often do that exact move when I teach Swiss Ball “Theme” classes at my gym! It’s a killer and kinda funny when everyone is hopping around all over the place. I do it too sometimes and just say, “This is what you SHOULDN’T be doing!”
So you aren’t alone 🙂
Sam @ The Real Pretty says
I am SO glad I am not the only one with this problem. I had to stop using the ball and ended up using a box bench to plant my foot on. I still felt like I might keel over at any minute though. Embarrassing and frustrating for sure!
Emilie @ Emilie's Enjoyables says
I definitely agree, stability exercises can make you feel like you’re in no shape at all!
Jessie @ amomgetsfit says
Twisted half moon Yoga pose. On those days I am happy that I am doing it at home, in my living room where nobody sees me. 🙂
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
I tried Bodystep for the first time a few weeks ago- and THAT was humbling. I have no coordination and have no idea how people can do step class! I’m falling all over the place the whole time! I’m surprised I didn’t break an ankle. 🙂
Oh man, those waffles look yummy. I love Van’s waffles, and to top it with peaches and cottage cheese… now you’re just killing me.
Amanda says
A bodyworks class I take at my gym is totally humbling. We are always doing walking pushups across our step thingo (technical term) and the instructor has us pause and hold them and I shake like a leaf! Pushups have always been so tough for me!!
Antonia @ healthinspirations says
Well, I’m sure looking forward to that workout now. I only registered on Monday night so I started my workouts a day late. Will be doing workout B tomorrow then….something to look forward to 😉 I did your 50 minute treadmill workout this morning and it was a great way to start the day. Love all the workouts you post 🙂
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
Last night at Pilates, I lost control of my ball while trying to hold it behind my bent knee. And it may have rolled past two other people before I could grab it. Awesome.
Amy says
ya those are way hard with the stability ball so dont feel bad haha. my last humbling experience was last night when i went to yoga. i dont do it often enough and i am seriously SO tight…im definitely not quite as good as i thought i was haha
Ali says
When I do tabata training and can barely keep my head lifted because I’m so tired just 3 minutes into the workout!
Jackie says
I have been doing P90X 2 and one of my favorite parts about it is the focus on stability. I paid no attention to stability before these work outs.
Dannielle says
Have you seen this?? You could definitely help spread the word with your blog!! Please do it!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc&sns=tw ..STOP Kony 2012
Natasha says
for me, every day of yoga is a humbling experience. I get into an ego-mindset and compare myself to others, and when I notice what I’m doing, I definitely am humbled.
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
As someone who has ZERO stability and coordination..I understand. TOTALLY.
Grace says
Ha! I feel like every workout is humbling! There is always something that is difficult or I feel silly doing but I give it my best shot wobbling and all:)
Hillary says
Training for another half marathon has been very, very humbling. I forgot just how much endurance it takes to run more than a few miles, and I’ve had to re-learn the importance of being mentally prepared as well as physically prepared. One week until race day, so we’ll see if the humbling experience has paid off!
Aylin @ Glow Kitchen says
I am always humbled when I take my normal gym workout into real time and engage in some outdoor sport. My gym workouts aren’t nearly as rigorous or spontaneously challenging as doing a sport or dealing with outdoor conditions, so I always remember to not overestimate my level of fitness.
Raquel @ Toned, Tan, Fit & Techie says
My last humbling experience was the 5K I did on Sunday in Napa. I need to run outside more, and really learn how to pace myself instead of doing the treadmill all the time. I have a tendency to run really fast and then slow down instead of going at a normal pace. I was humbled when I saw people that looked like they werent in the best shape kick my butt at a run.
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I looooooooooove Vans waffles! I used to be obsessed with Eggos as a kid, but I like the ingredients list on Vans better.. I think they taste better than the Kashi frozen ones even.
MigraineMe says
My workouts definitely do not include enough stability work and balance work and as a result, every time I do something requiring much balance or stability, the result….let’s just say it’s always humbling. I end up wobbling all over, falling sometimes and if not falling, certainly there are many near-misses!
Khushboo says
My HIIT run on Monday humbled me…although only 20 minutes, it really took a lot out of me!
Lauren says
Hey Julie,
I am wondering if you know any good exersises to get rid of armpit boobs. You know, the little rolls of fat in between your armpit and boobs! I know overall weight loss will make them smaller but I am more curious about specific strength training moves.
Thanks!
Amber K says
Just yesterday after doing a TRX class when I haven’t done one in weeks. It was so much harder than I remembered! And I could barely do some of the moves I used to be so much better at. Especially the burpees, balancing on one food doing burpees is HARD!
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Ohh those waffles look great! I love Van’s waffles! I’ve never thought of putting ricotta cheese on them though!! I need to pick some up!
Kristina says
BodyPump definitely humbles me every time I do it. (Btw, I’ve been going for almost 3 months on your recommendation and I LOVE it!). It’s those dang hovers/planks that kick my booty.
Jen says
How do you get inspiration for such amazing breakfasts, every time I look you up you’re having something even more delicious than the day before, it’s all I can do to make a protein smoothie!
Emily says
Most humbling??
I danced competitively for 18 years, but after I graduated and started university it became too hard to keep up both.. I did pointe, modern, jazz, you name it and its still my favourite thing on this earth, so I try to do drop-in classes.
In the last two years though I’ve noticed my muscle memory and fitness level isn’t as it once was. Last month an old dance friend and I tried a pointe class. BAD IDEA. Its incredible how self-concious I felt, mostly because my body simply couldn’t do everything no matter my effort or concentration.

Tripping on my shoelaces at one of the busiest intersections of downtown indy….it was an epic and gracious fall I might add
heather says
Um, probably tooting during pilates . . . in a couple of classes.
Alaina says
Planks humble me because I have the weakest core. Pretty much anything that “engages” the core will humble me.
“Why should I have to change my name? He’s the one who sucks.” Haha, great movie.
Julie says
Barre gets deep into those muscles. I try not to get frustrated. People of all shapes and sizes go.

Office space is one of the best movies of all time. I was humbled during my last 50K where I hobbled to the finish line like an old lady in need of a walker.
Katy @ HaveYouHurd says
Doing your leg and ab burner workout yesterday was pretty humbling! I haven’t done a workout like that in awhile… It showed me that maybe I’ve been taking it too easy on myself lately and I think I might need to push a little harder in my workouts.
P.S. I pictured you getting pissed and punting the ab ball across the gym and almost LOL’ed haha
