Today’s Piloxing class was a good one! My favorite instructor taught the class and had me sweating in no time.
Group exercise classes can be so much fun. If you haven’t taken a group exercise class that you’ve enjoyed and think it might be something you would really love, I highly encourage you to “shop around.”
I initially thought I wasn’t cut out for group exercise classes based on some of my previous experiences. After realizing that my inability to keep up with the instructor in a step aerobics class (especially when other participants are practically somersaulting over the flippin’ step), doesn’t mean that I can’t hold my own in a different group exercise class like spinning or BodyPump. I love boot camp classes, strength-based classes and Jazzercise but feel like I might fall on my face in dance or step aerobics classes.
Indoor Triathlon
Before taking today’s Piloxing class, I noticed a flier at the front desk at my gym that caught my eye.
An indoor triathlon? (Pet peeve: Something cannot be “annual” without occurring at least one time before. I know my fellow PR and writing friends cringed at that one.)
The indoor triathlon includes a 15 minute run, 15 minute swim and 15 minute bike and the goal is to simply go as far as possible in the allotted time.
I don’t own a bike, so the idea of competing in an indoor triathlon intrigues me a lot! I don’t have any triathlon experience other than a relay-style triathlon that I did back in 2008 with two friends. It was a blast!
I swam, my friend Laurel biked and our friend Ryan ran. It was so much fun!
Sexy swim cap! (You can also see Ryan right behind me. He was the swimmer for a separate team that also competed in the triathlon. I think his team ended up getting third overall in the mixed male/female relay category!)
When it comes to doing a triathlon, I feel like I am the exact opposite from most people in that the swim is the part that excites me the most and the biking makes me most nervous.
I was a lifeguard and a diver and played water polo in high school and have always been very comfortable in the water, but hopping on a bike and pedaling around a ton of other bikers freaks me out.
Since the indoor triathlon eliminates the need for a fancy bike, I think it could be a lot of fun!
Lunch
Today’s lunch was easy since it simply involved reheating leftovers from last night’s dinner.
In the bowl:
- Quinoa
- Pork
- Cauliflower
- Spinach
- Soy sauce
Yum!
Questions of the Afternoon
- Have you ever done a triathlon before? Would you want to?
- What part of a triathlon (swim, bike, run) makes you most nervous?
Chelsea says
An indoor tri sounds like a blast! I really wish my gym was big enough to hold events such as this 🙁 But I go to a cheap gym with no group exercise room nor pool haha.
Carrie @ Lift Eat Repeat says
Swimming makes me the most nervous. I can’t hold my breathe long at all so I think I would struggle with that one!
Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health says
That indoor tri sounds like ti would be so cool! I hope you do it and then blog about it hehe. I think it would be fun to do a real triathlon, but I’m not sure i could run after both swimming and biking!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I’ve never done a triathlon but I always thought a sprint one would be fun! I know I would t want to do more because marathon training already takes up so much time!
Laura says
I am so glad that I am not that only one that is nervous about biking. I love swimming and love to run but biking is definitely what unnerves me the most. It seems like there is just more to go wrong. With swimming and running there isn’t a piece of equipment to really keep track of. With biking the bike part is what gets me. What if I have a flat tire? What if the chain comes off? It worries me.
Sarah @ Will Run for Pasta says
I love the idea of an indoor triathlon! For some reason that doesn’t seem as scary as outdoor and dealing with the elements. Swimming would definitely make me the most nervous but maybe not if it’s indoor. It’s not really the open water that scares me, just the idea of getting “trampled’ by all the swimmers.
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
I’ve never done a triathlon but the swim scares me the most! I am a terrible swimmer, and would probably freak out in the middle of the lake or ocean!
Renee @BendifulBlog says
An indoor triathlon sounds fun, I’ve never seen one before. I’m like you, I’m not a biker. I was a swimmer all through school and college. I’m good in the water sometimes better there than on land. It’s biking that I can’t handle. I love spin but biking outside makes me nervous.
Megan @ Megan's Munchies says
I have never heard of an indoor triatholon! I would totally love to do that!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I think the swimming part would make me the most nervous. I know how to swim, but it’s not something that I love to do. I’d get worried I would get tired really quickly!
Molly @ A Fresh Start For Molly says
I did my first triathlon on Sunday and loved it. I am the same as you – the swim was a breeze but I was FREAKING OUT about the bike. I don’t have a great bike but I got through it anyway. I am hooked now!
Megan @ Fiterature says
I’ve done several Tris and the swim always makes me the most nervous. Probably because most swims I’ve done were in the ocean and I am TERRIFIED of sharks. Any time someone in a black wetsuit gets in my eye line, I”m convinced that it’s a shark and I am going to die. Buuuuut, I keep coming back for more. Go figure!!!
em @ simplypresent says
I’ve never attempted a triathalon but I have considered it. The most daunting segment for me would be the swim. I’ve never been a strong swimmer!

Hi Julie, been reading your blog now for a few months now and this is my first comment. I live in the state of Queensland, Australia 🙂 I’ve recently caught the triathlon bug and have competed in a few enticer distances (shorter than a sprint distance). I don’t have a “leg” of the tri I’m nervous about – its more what I’m the slowest and hopeless at! The bike leg is my slowest and most dismal part lol. My boyfriend can never understand how I come out of the water first and come off the bike almost at the back of the pack lol. Still love them but- I get the biggest rush finishing them,
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says
Although the idea intrigues me, I don’t think I’d ever actually do a triathlon – because of the swim! My swimming abilities don’t go much beyond a doggy paddle, so it would take a lot of work for me to be able to do one.
Jodi @ I Run for Food and Wine says
I want to complete a triathlon and a Warrior Dash! It’s hard for me to find friends that want to join, I mean, c’mon!, there is free beer!
I would probably only be comfortable completing the “run” portion. I would be most nervous about swimming. I mom completed many, many triathlons and even when she was pregnant with me!
I completed your ‘Jumping Jacks Circuit’ today, thanks for sharing it!
Michelle says
I’ve been competing in triathlons for a few years and I love them! They’re so much fun and a great workout! I usually do 5 or 6 a summer with varying distances. I actually just completed my first Ironman last summer.
I’m the opposite of you: the bike is by far my favorite part and the swim is definitely my weakest. You should definitely give the indoor one a try (tri? bad pun I know).
Annie Hodgdon says
I’ve done 6 sprint tris so far and have another one coming up in a week and a half. For me, swimming is THE WORST!! I’m 6’1, so most people tend to think I must be a great swimmer, but unfortunately, it’s just not something I enjoy so I tend to put the least amount of training into it and thus, suck at it the most! The fact that most of my tris are in the freezing cold Maine waters doesn’t help my cause as the mere fact of having my face continually in the water is almost enough to take my breath away. I think a tri would be a great challenge for you to tackle, plus it would force you to overcome your biking fears. Go for it!!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
That’s REALLY cool that the triathlon is timed and the goal is to do as much as you can!! I kind of want to do it in my gym just to see how much I really could do in all three sports!!
Katie says
I’m doing a sprint tri at the end of October! I’m actually really worried about the run portion…I know I’ll be fine with the swim and I spin/bike a lot, but running has always been my weak point. I’m working on the C25K program right now, hoping to finish by the end of September and then I’ll be able to spend the month of October focusing on all three areas. It’s a smallish tri, apparently (in Tallahassee- just a few hours north of you, haha) so I’m hoping it’s a good choice for my first one!
Ehren says
That sounds so fun!! I’ve thought about tri’s but it gets me nervous… Mostly the swimming part! (haha) The biking too, but I’d feel much more comfortable on a stationary bike! And the 15min/each sounds awesome! xo
Ann Wilson says
Hi Julie! Good luck and have fun! I’ve done 11 triathlons so far (since 2009), including Ironman Florida 2010 and two half-Ironmans (Boulder and Kansas). I’m training for my second Ironman (Canada) in less than 6 weeks! Yikes! I love racing… so much fun. I’m usually most nervous with the run. It’s the hardest part of a tri – at least with long-course triathlons. Running a marathon by itself is hard enough, but thinking about running it after swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112 miles makes me a tad bit nervous! I know I can do it, because I have done it before. It’s still nervewracking though. Come Hell or high water, I will cross the finish line. Triathletes are nuts.

That’s the same day as my wedding:)

I’ve read this blog for a while but never commented. Anyway, I’m a newbie triathlete & am training for my first sprint triathlon.
For those interested in a tri just for fun or to find out what it’s all about, try a ladies only race. They’re a comfortable, friendly introduction to the sport. Here in Ohio, we have a race series called Girls Tri Too. I did my first 2 tris through them last summer & will do my 3rd one with them next weekend. The distances are shorter, the participants come in all ages, shapes & sizes, & lots of people have no fancy equipment – just an older bike, a helmet, a racing suit & some goggles. I promise, it’s not scary. Not even the bike part (fellow run & swim lover here).
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
That sounds like a perfect way to try out tris! I’d like to do that, sounds very doable. I’d be most scared of the bike too!
Katherine @ The Fit Lady Sings says
I just finished my second triathlon a little over a week ago! I think they’re a blast; the training is fun and different everyday, and it gets you in great shape because you’re using so many different muscle groups for each event! I’d definitely go for it, you’d love it!
Bek @ Crave says
I LOVE (with all my heart) group fitness classes- I doubt I’d go to the gym (well without alot of force) as much as I do now if I didn’t have those awesome classes. You should do the triathlon, sounds fun!
Rebecca @ Faith, Fitness and Food says
Indoor tri looks fun! I am currently in training for my first sprint tri and the swimming portion has me the most nervous! It’s great exercise though and I find myself really enjoying the workouts. My tri has a half hour cap on the half mile swim, which I am confident I can make but it’s still kind of nerve wrecking! Keep us updated on the indoor tri if you decide to do it!
heather says
i like endurance training, but i’m not sure that i’d do a triathlon due to the biking requirement : / i am afraid of biking on the street, of cars, getting hit . . . too much out of my control
Shannon says
I am so with you regarding the step aerobics, actually I get very dizzy with all the hoping around. I am looking into trying some Jazzersize after reading about the fun weekend your family had:) The 1st Annual Triathlon isnt an issue for me, maybe they are trying to just let us know that this will be the first for things to come. Oh, well:)….
Jeni says
I would love to do an indoor tri! I am the same as you- love the swim part, but the biking scares me! I have a fear that I would crash into the other bikers and wind up creating a wall of downed cyclists blocking the road.
Alisha says
I feel the same way you do about group classes! I feel like I’m going to fall on my face in step aerobics but I love boot camp and strength classes!
I’m totally jealous I want my gym to do an indoor triathlon! I’ll have to contact the fitness coordinator perhaps.. 🙂
Ct cupcake says
1 st annual does in fact imply that there will be subsequent events, thus 1 st annual works in this situation. How does your gym feel about you criticizing their publicity online?
Brita says
Woah, that sounds sooo fun! I’d looove to do an indoor triathalon! I think the part that scares me the most is swimming. I like to swim, but I’m not a strong swimmer nor do I know any strokes other than breast stroke….but hey, it keeps me afloat!!

Hi Julie!
I’ve recently stumbled upon your blog and have been an instant fan from the very first read! Your witty daily commentaries do a fabulous job of interlacing healthful info & advice to its readers – in a way that seems so breezy and natural 🙂 I also really appreciate the support and encouragement that you provide to your readers, in place of the (commonly-seen) ‘show-off’ stats that appear in so many other blogs. Keep up the great work!
peanutbutterfingers says
this is such a nice comment. thank you, lizzie!!!
Courtney Tucker says
I’ve completed two sprint tris and they were amazing experiences! I am so intrigued by this idea of an indoor triathlon. I’m going to have to keep an eye open for one of those in my area especially because the heat this summer in NC is killing me!
Arlene @ Adventures in Weight Loss says
For the record, journalism majors can’t stand “1st annual,” either. If it’s your first, it can’t be annual. Second? Go to town.
I’ve never done a triathlon … Or even a 5k. But I plan to remedy that this fall.
Daio says
“First Annual” is perfectly fine. To say that it’s not is a hypercorrection–kind of like this one from your Fashion Page, and almost every other entry on your blog:
“Fun tidbit: I purchased this skirt to wear on our honeymoon! You ***MAY*** see pictures of it in action here.” (Emphasis added.)
You probably picked this up in grade school when teachers corrected students who asked if they “can” go to the bathroom. That’s because students generally mean to ask their teachers for permission to use the restroom, rather than whether or not they are capable of doing so.
However, the all-too-frequent application of this “rule” on your website is not exactly appropriate most of the time. Hopefully, you don’t mean to grant us PERMISSION to “check out your Fashion page” because that would seem a big egotistical. Rather, you mean to express where readers CAN find a particular piece of information (IF they want to).
To be honest, that quirk has bugged me for awhile, but I only feel compelled to say something now because of your rather judgmental (and unfounded) criticism of your gym’s flier.
