Good morning!
I hope you’re feeling well-rested today! I don’t have to go into work until later this morning, so I jumped at the chance to sleep in a bit.
Once I woke up, I reheated the eggs I prepared last night. As I made dinner yesterday, I thought I had to work the early shift at the gym again today and simultaneously prepared breakfast for myself. After checking my schedule on my phone before bed, I realized my error but took advantage of my prep work this morning and ate the eggs anyway.
Eggs + Shredded cheese + Onion + Spinach
Plus a hot cup of coffee on the side!
I will be heading out the door soon to train a client and tackle my own workout for the day. I’ll see you crazy kids after lunch!
Now for some blog talk…
Switching from Google Reader to Bloglovin’
If you’re a big-time blog reader like me, you’ve likely heard the bad news about Google Reader. (For those of you who may be in the dark about Google Reader, it is a website that allows blog readers to read their favorite blogs in one place.) Google Reader is shutting down on July 1.
I’ve been in denial and have been reading all of my favorite blogs in Google Reader ever since I heard the news, but during the nearly eight hours of flight delays I experienced last week as I traveled to San Francisco, I began to do a little research and signed up for Bloglovin’. Another similar website that has received a lot of praise is Feedly, so you might want to check that out as well.
Both Bloglovin’ and Feedly import your previous Google Reader feed, making it easy to continue to follow your favorite blogs in one place.
Also, if you’re a blogger and want to add the “follow this blog with bloglovin’” button you see on the right hand side of my blog, you can click here for a tutorial.
Simply click the icon and type in the name of your blog. Then click “how to put this icon on your blog” and follow the instructions. Since I use WordPress, I just copy and pasted the HTML code into a text box and then dropped the text box widget into the side bar to the right of my blog. (Check their tutorial. I promise they make it simple!)
I still haven’t downloaded the Bloglovin’ or Feedly apps on my phone yet, so I’m hoping they are user friendly!
If you’re looking for more blogging-related posts, here are a few I’ve published on the blog in the past:
Question of the Morning
- How do you read blogs? Email subscription? Visit the website directly? Through Google Reader, Feedly or Bloglovin’?
I almost always read blogs through Google Reader, though sometimes I just mark all of them as read when too many accumulate and visit my favorite blogs directly on the blog’s website.
Megan says
I use blog lovin! I try to read them all but once the number creeps to over 30 I mark all as read and go to the sites for my favs! The app is nice but it is hard to comment on blogs with it.
Katie H. says
When I heard the news about Google Reader, I switched to Bloglovin’. This was about three months ago (maybe more), and I’ve been very impressed so far. I truly think that it’s easier to use than Google Reader was, and I’m far more impressed with the iPhone and iPad apps.
Hope it works well for you, too!
Jen @ Chocolate Chips & Tricep Dips says
Thanks for all the good info.! Be sure and let us know how you like Bloglovin’ after you’ve been using it for a little while.
Linz @ Itz Linz says
i just visit blogs directly. i never have used google reader so i’m not sure what all the fuss is about 🙂 hehe
Jamie @ Sometimes Healthy Living Blog says
I’ve actually always used Bloglovin, and I’m a fan! Bloglovin is super easy to use, so I think you’ll like it.
Thanks for the links to other posts you’ve written on blogging. I’m looking to expand my writing a bit more, so this is helpful.
Kerry @ Half Healthy, Half Nuts says
I switched to Bloglovin’ on my phone a while back and I LOVE it. Easy to use and easy to read (the text isn’t too miniscule to read). My only gripe – I can’t comment on blogs through the app (or at least I haven’t figured that part out yet).
Jen says
I have used Google Reader for forever, but when I got a new phone last week I discovered that I couldn’t find it in the play store anymore (I have a droid). I switched over to feedly, and it is really user friendly (at least the app is so far).
Andrea @ Barbells and Buttercream says
Does all this mean that the Reader in WordPress, where it shows recent posts under the title of Blogs I Love, is a Google Reader? I thought it was a WordPress reader. Sorry I’m a bit slow in understanding this, but does that mean you have to switch your blog from WordPress to Bloglovin? Will this also affect the people that follow my blog? I’d be so appreciative of any input. Thanks!
Angela says
Nonono she’s not talking about the site she posts her blog through, Google Reader is a site that compiles blogs for other people to read. It’s not a publishing site. I am not a blogger, but I use Google reader so that I don’t have to visit each blog I follow directly to see if they have updated.
Ruthie says
Feedly has been great for customization. I really like the “magazine” view to scan through photos, and I can set my newsy blogs to “title” view (Google Reader-like).
Renee-hungry monster says
Thank you for posting this info about Bloglovin’. I had an account, but never used it. I just imported my gazillion feeds over from Google Reader & am so happy about it 🙂
Katie R says
I am lovin’ Bloglovin’ …although it is hard to make comments on posts. You have to do it through the interwebs, that can get annoying.
Lisa says
I still haven’t left google reader, I guess I’m just waiting for it to close for good;)
I actually tried theoldreader.com for about 3 seconds and I think it’s better than feedly and bloglovin’ so I guess I’ll be headed there once google reader shuts down for good.
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
I feel like I’m one of very few people who does this, but I’m all about actually going to the real blog’s website. I don’t use Google Reader, Feedly, Bloglovin’, etc. — I just really enjoy going to people’s actual blogs!
Joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I should use this! I stopped using Google Reader a while ago because I basically forgot about it haha but this would keep me more organized when blog reading. 😉
Ashley @ Life and Fitness says
I follow so many blogs on Bloglovin so I don’t read all of them. I follow the main ones directly through their website.
Lisa says
I visit blogs directly!
Lauren says
Right when I got used to using GoogleReader, they made the announcement to cancel it. Thankfully, Bloglovin’ does make it really simple to transfer your favorite blogs and it is really user friendly! I love it so far and haven’t had an problems!
Starr says
I switched to Feedly a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it! The interface is great and it’s pretty easy to use. I also VERY recently got my first smartphone, and the Feedly app is very easy to use also.
I wholeheartedly recommend Feedly 😀
Sarah says
I ended up chosing Bloglovin’ too! So far, I’m happy with the switch. I was going to go with feedly, but it doesn’t work on IE (and becuase I work for the federal government, I am forced to use IE at work) so that was a no go for me. Glad to see other people chosing Bloglovin’ too! I’ve found it to be super Blogger friendly 🙂
Alicia says
Woo hoo!! Thank you for the Bloglovin’ info! I’ve been living in denial as well 🙂
Ashlee@HisnHers says
I’ve been using Blog Lovin for awhile now and I really like it! The app is super user friendly. Then again I never used Google Reader so I dont have anything to compare!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
I haven’t tried blolovin yet–but it sounds pretty good!
Sarah @ Yogi in Action says
I always just read blogs directly. I’ve never gotten into any of the readers, so it’s just my habit to check each one out individually.
Ashley says
I just started using bloglovin too! It’s pretty easy although sometimes it bugs me.
Katie says
I use Bloglovin and it’s great plus the phone app is so simple!
Melissa says
I switched from Reader to Bloglovin (after trying Feedly and not really liking it) and it’s great!
Rachel McIntyre says
I signed up on Bloglovin’ a couple of months ago, but I still have Google Reader and keep going back to this. I suppose it’s because I’m used to it. I’ll have to get used to Bloglovin’ soon though!
Dana @ Conscious Kitchen Blog says
Reading this post through Blog Lovin’ right now. I love it! One of the best aspects (to me) is that Blog Lovin’ allows you to see the design of the actual site. Bloggers work so hard on their space, I want to see ’em!
Maggie says
Thank you for this post! I have used Google Reader up until today and just signed up with Bloglovin. I knew I was running out of time!
Tara@PNWRunner says
I use bloglovin’ right now. I also use subscriptions too!
Jillienne@ChasingRaspberries says
I have been using Pulse as a news/blog feed reader. It has been great so far, but now I want to compare it with Bloglovin’.
Julie @ RDelicious Kitchen says
I never used google reader since I am newer to blogging. But when I started my blog I started using bloglovin’ and I really like it!
Jen says
I switched to Feedly a few months ago when I learned that Google reader was going to be shut down. I took me a while to stop fighting and accept that I had to embrace Feedly and let go of Google reader, but once I did, I’ve got to say that I really love Feedly. The apps for iPhone and iPad are terrific and, dare I say it, easier to navigate than Google reader was.
Melissa @mypeachlife says
Can you comment on blogs through the app on an iPad using feedly?
Paolo U says
I haven’t use bloglovin before, but I think that this is the time to try them out. I have seen a few of my blogger friends using them on their blogs.
Kimberly Ann says
I love all your blogging tips! I’m pretty new at really getting into blogging – so these posts are so helpful! I’m also brand new on blog lovin and like it so far.

I just read all your blogging tips from previous posts! They were so informational for a new blogger, like myself. I have been struggling with blogging safety and connecting with other bloggers since I started my blog in May. Thank you so much for the advice. Btw, I started following your blog when you were on vacation in Peru. I truly love your blog and look forward to reading your post everyday. 🙂
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I love using Feedly! I also have a Bloglovin account and like that one as well, though I like Feedly more.
Caitie Richards says
I have been reading your blog regularly for a little over a year now and LOVE it! It’s right up my alley and, admittedly, is the first and only blog I have remained interested in enough to continue to follow. That said, which blogs do you follow? I have tried to find some other blogs to read in addition to yours (hey – sometimes the work day is slow 😉 but haven’t found any remotely as well done as yours. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I literally just switched over to Feedly–like 5 minutes ago. It’s fine but it’s not the same.
Danielle says
Love me some Bloglovin!! I was never a google reader reader, but i couldnt imagine living without bloglovin, so my condolences to all of you looking for a new way to read blogs (change is never fun!)
Beth Sheridan (Sugar Coated Sheridan) says
Thank you for the icon tips! I have only been blogging for a few months and still feel so STUPID when it comes to some of this stuff…
Joanna says
When I heard about Google reader, I went to Feedly and I didn’t really care for it. Recently I switched to bloglovin and it is so much easier to use. The app is pretty user friendly as well.
Amanda @ Sistas of Strength says
I’ve been using feedly and it took a little getting used to, but I am good with it now. May check out bloglovin for fun at some point too!
Wren says
Wow, thank you so much for sharing about Bloglovin! I have been out of the loop I guess, I had no idea sites like that existed, and I’ve been following blogs by saving each one as an icon on my ipad and opening them one at a time checking for new posts! This is so much more convenient!
Courtney says
Oh thank you so much for this post! I’ve been using Google Reader for over 5 years and I didn’t know what I was going to do after July 1. I looked at both and think Feedly is going to be perfect! I actually think I’m going to like it better than Reader. Thank you again!!
Erika says
I’ve been using Feedly for all my blog reading. I think the only downside to using the app is that I have to go directly to the website to make comments on blog posts. Other than that it’s great!
Alex says
I’ve been in denial too. I didn’t like bloglovin or feedly! I suggest “the old reader.” I’m not the greatest source of recommendation though because I’m still using google reader!
Tonya says
When the google reader news broke, I made the switch to feebly. I love that you can customize the look in so many ways.
Jovan B. says
Thank you for showing how to put the bloglovin’ on my site. I’m pretty clueless about those things. I appreciate it! Have an awesome weekend. 🙂
