The first thing on my agenda for today was a 6 a.m. spinning class, so after my alarm went off and I changed into my workout clothes, I grabbed an apple and and handful of trail mix and headed out the door to teach. It’s spring break in our area right now which means the gym is quieter than usual this week, but thankfully we still had a decent turnout for today’s class.
Upbeat Workout Playlist
My personal favorites from this playlist:
- Fort Minor – Remember The Name (Very motivating!)
- Christina Aguilera – Ain’t No Other Man (A cheesy but super energizing song!)
- Madonna – Express Yourself (I just have to smile when I hear this one!)
- Ron Pope – One Grain Of Sand (A great cool down song – not super slow, but pretty chill.)
One of my goals with my spinning playlists is to incorporate some newer songs and a bunch of throwback music as well since I know not everyone is super into top 40 hits. Plus, it’s always fun and a little nostalgic to listen to old favorites!

Breakfast
Once I made it home from the gym, breakfast was calling my name, so I quickly assembled a bowl of egg white oatmeal and, once again added peanut butter and Hershey’s cocoa powder to the mix for a little more flavor.
Chocolate + Peanut Butter = Always a winning combination!
I ate my oats with a hot mug of decaf coffee on the side.
Post breakfast, I took a much-needed shower and started working on this blog post. And now we’re all caught up and it’s time for me to head back out and do that work thang!
Have a great Tuesday!
Question of the Morning
- When it comes to your workout playlists, do you stick to newer music or are you all about some older hits, too?
My personal workout playlists are all over the place. I have everything from classic rock and rap to Disney music (embarrassing, but true) and girly pop! I love it all!
Gretchen | Gretchruns says
I love having a huge mix of genres and old/new for my workout music! I also like to vary tempo a lot, so when a fast song comes on I can really push it and not be too tired. Love seeing your playlists every week! They give me lots of inspiration for my own mix 🙂
Brittany says
I love mixing in older hits! Can’t go wrong with some Madonna and Xtina 🙂
Christina M says
Ooh that Fort Minor song is my FAV!! It came on my station this morning too while doing my Elliptical workout and it always motivates me so much more! Doesn’t matter how tired I am, when that song comes on, I’m like -“go time!” Time to push yourself! Love that you included it in your playlist!
I usually stick to my Pandora shuffle channel of House/Paramore and it plays anything from Tiesto, Linkin Park, Paramore, Kaskade, Empire of the Sun, Fort Minor, Eminem, Morgan Page…. it’s insane! But I love the heavier alternative tracks and then the upbeat house/dance tunes that sometimes flow into more of a rap song next… keeps me guessing. 🙂 🙂
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
I totally mix it up as well. Everything from current hits to Broadway musical stuff. Lots of country involved too.
Julie says
I totally have songs from musicals, too. Love them!
Kim says
Personally, I always stick to new hits on my playlists, but when I take classes I love a mix – so I think this is great!

Remember the Name is my ultimate running song – always play that when I need a boost!
Julie says
Such a motivating one, right!? I love it!
Jenn @ Fairest Run of All says
Haha, “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” is my go-to karaoke song. Do you allow REALLY LOUD SINGING in your classes?
Julie says
Oh man, I would LOVE that!! 🙂 Please come join my 6 a.m. crew! Ha!
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun says
I’ll have to add some of these to my iPod! I was just thinking this morning during my treadmill workout how badly I needed some new songs 🙂
Bridget says
I’ve always wondered how you awesome mommas to be drink decaf coffee! I feel like I would be so tired in the morning without a little pick-me-up! Was that a rough transition?
Julie says
I actually feel pretty lucky that I’ve never been HUGE into caffeine. I’ll actually drink decaf when I’m not pregnant every now and then, so it wasn’t really a huge deal for me. I usually only drink one cup of coffee a day, so switching to decaf wasn’t too challenging. I do know it can be tough for some though — headaches, etc.
Bridget says
That is lucky! I feel like when the time comes & my hubbby and I want to have kids, I’ll have to start slowly weaning myself off coffee right away!
eliza says
thank GOODNESS most doctors (including mine) said up to two cups is fine. I limit myself to half a cup, though, now that I am expecting. I tried to cut it out completely and was absolutely miserable! ha
Dottie (@crazyfitmommy) says
My playlists vary a TON. I use iTunes radio a lot, and right now my two favorite stations are Heart (because 80s are awesome) and Imagine Dragons when I need something a little more laid back. I’ve been known to throw showtunes in there (especially Rent and Newsies), top 40, or even classical music. I kind of have music ADD, especially when I’m running…
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
What a fun workout playlist! I love good pump up music!
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
I love all sorts of music so it’s just about what I can quickly add to a playlist since I usually wait til the last minute. I watched the whole season of Empire the other weekend and was inspired to make a Timbaland playlist for my classes since he’s the exec music producer on the show. It was tight.
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
I so admire how active you’ve been in your pregnancy!! Get it girl!
Mallory says
I prefer the throwback hits for working out! Spotify does an updated Throwback Thursday playlist every week and it is almost always 90s and early 2000s hits. I think a couple weeks ago they did all female pop stars from the 90’s and I may or may not have sung along out loud to Destiny’s Child while on my run haha.
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
Love any and everything by the Glee cast!
Annette Perkins (@FitnessPerks) says
That looks like such a fun playlist–and how awesome of you to include so many genres & time-frames for all kinds of individuals. I think that is why I like LM music so much for all those classes I teach–it’s a nice variety for everyone!
Heather @ Life In Leggings says
Fun playlist! Generally, I stick to newer songs for my running and workout music, but every now and then I’ll pull out an 80s or 90s playlist and totally rock out. You’ve also gotta love boy band throwbacks! 😉
Danielle Wooding @ New England Daughter says
I definitely have a mix of things, although since I don’t listen to the radio much I’m not always so clued into the top 40. Spotify helps though!
Skinny Fitalicious says
I tend to listen to my new music a lot but every now and then I’ll hear any old song like TLC push it and think I need to recreate a playlist mixing the good old ones in. That Madonna song brings back memories!
Alyssa says
I have a horrible tendency of finding that *one* song on my runs that has a perfect beat (or perfect amount of sass) and will listen to it on repeat! Generally speaking though, I will listen to anything depending on my mood. I love a good upbeat pop song, bouncy dubstep, sassy country girl tunes, or even angry heavy metal sometimes! Whatever keeps me going!
kelsierakay says
I generally tend to stick to newer stuff, but the occasional 90’s song thrown in is always welcome!
I have an indoor cycling audition to become an instructor at a specialized cycling center on the 19th! I’ve just started putting together my audition playlist and forming my workouts. I’m pretty nervous about it but also excited to try something new!
Melanie @ Fit Girl by Nature says
I LOVE that you included Take On Me by Aha! I’m truly an 80’s girl! I love having a mix from different genres when I workout…especially when I’m on the treadmill so I can stay motivated. And believe me…you will find more than a few 80’s songs on almost every one of my playlists!
Amanda B @ Cupcakes & Miles says
Haha! Disney music! There is nothing wrong with that! If you had me working on your playlists, they’d be filled with nothing but Hannah Montana and Let it Go! 😉
Dottie (@crazyfitmommy) says
Lol now I’m thinking about running to “Be a Man” from Mulan…Disney movies do have great workout songs!
Katie @ Live Half Full says
I secretly LOVE when throwback songs are added in my spin classes! I had one Flywheel instructor do a full class of 90’s songs, it was the best!
Nona @ RunningHigh says
I never use music anymore. If I listen to anything while I run, it’s podcasts! Or when I’m on the treadmill, I’ll put on Netflix. 🙂
Veronika says
Ha! I am with you Julie- my playlist has everything you mentioned even the Disney music. LOL
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
I love older hits for workout playlists! I like songs that I know all the words to 🙂
Laur says
Pop Goes Punk mixes have some good songs for spin classes. They can be a little scream-o, but depending on the band you can get some really good songs! I love remixes, so incorporating these gives older songs a new “spark”!
Lacey Garner says
Do you use Spotify? If you do, I think it would rock if you made your playlists public for your followers to subscribe to them!
Also, so random. I dreamed the other night that I ran into you and Ryan in NYC. You didn’t know me from Adam, but I was so excited about your pregnancy and kept talking like we were friends. Dream Julie was definitely freaked out.
I think that’s a compliment to how approachable your blog is. Your writing voice is so friendly, I feel like I would be able to carry on a full conversation with you if we ever bumped into each other in NYC!
Janice says
I was just going to say the same thing about being able to follow your Spotify playlists! I love your taste in workout music. 🙂
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
Playlists/music TOTALLY make or break the workout (especially runs), in my opinion! And TOTAL blast from the past with that song from The Darkness! Going to be in my head all day now.
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
I’m all about mixing the old and the new!
Kim says
Not sure if this has already been said (or done) but you should put your playlists on Spotify so anyone who uses the app can follow your PBF playlists!
Ps. Hi from a (mostly) silent reader of 5 years.. I’m so excited for your little man to come! 🙂
Alyssa @ Renaissancerunnergirl says
I like to mix current pop and Taylor Swift with oldies I downloaded to iTunes from my parents’ CD collection (think the Beatles, etc). Plus there are some Disney tunes thrown in there because when I was a coxswain for my college boat club, my rowers had me play “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” to pump them up before races!
Molly D. says
Oh this playlist is AWESOME! My workout playlist is all over the place as well but I think it’s better that way! 🙂
Maddie@Dixie Runs says
I like to mix it up! I throw in newer songs but always keep some older favorites that I know I like to run to.
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I’m always on the lookout for new music to add to playlists. It’s fun to hear what other people are listening to.
Krysten says
Tom Petty, yessss 🙂
I also agree about chocolate and peanut butter, as I sit here snacking on a Reese’s egg from Easter!
juliesrunawayfreckles says
This playlist looks awesome. I have been on a gym-cardio obsession lately and desperately needed some new tunes 🙂
Katie says
I like to mix up my workout playlists with new and older songs. If I just include newer songs, then I get sick of my playlist REALLY fast, which does not help motivate me at all. I always keep some classics on there like “Lose Yourself” by Eminem. Also, I like to find mashups by DJs that usually include newer and older songs–keeps me on my toes and excited to keep going!
