This morning’s breakfast reminded me of one of my favorite after school snacks as a kid.
Cheese toast! (Served with a cup of decaf coffee that made me feel oh so cozy inside.)
I placed two slices of sharp cheddar cheese on a leftover Kaiser roll from this weekend’s Easter cookout and put it in the toaster oven until the cheese melted. I then topped the cheese toast with avocado slices, salt and pepper. Grown up cheese toast for breakfast, baby!
My breakfast inspired me to reflect on some of my old favorite after school snacks as a kid and so many random foods started popping up in my mind!
Some of my old favorites:
- Bagel Bites (Anyone else remember the “Pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening pizza at supper time…” jingle!?)
- Chocolate Instant Breakfast
- Fruit (grapes, apples, bananas, oranges)
- Strawberries ‘n’ Cream Oatmeal (from the little instant oatmeal packets)
- Cheese Toast
- Yogurt (strawberry banana)
- Cereal (dry – I was never a big milk fan and I also rarely ate cereal for breakfast… It was always more of a “snack food” for me.)
Oh, after school snacks of the ‘90s… Memoriiiiies!
Question of the Morning
- Do you remember some of your favorite after school snacks from when you were growing up?
I also remember I loooved pouring myself a big glass of orange juice after school. Now that I look back on some of my favorite after school snacks, a lot of them seem very “breakfasty” – I guess breakfast foods have always been a personal favorite!
Coco says
Gushers, Fruit by the Foot, Lucky Charms. My BFF and I would also make nachos by microwaving chips topped with salsa and cheese. I also liked to take a slice of cheese and a slice of ham or turkey and roll it up!
Julie says
GUSHERS! YES!
Dana | fresh simple five says
As a 90s kid, I think it is a requirement to remember the bagel bites jingle – haha! I loved snacking on graham crackers and peanut butter!
Kaella (KaellaOnTheRun) says
I liked apples and peanut butter (still do!!!)
Cassie says
Bagel bites or Totino’s Pizza Rolls. Oh man, so good, yet so, so bad. Or cereal! It all depended on whether or not I wanted salty or sweet 🙂
Julie says
oh man, I could go for some pizza rolls right now…
Cassie says
lol! You’re welcome for that craving. Ryan might thank you too!
Felicia says
So fun to think about our “go-tos” growing up – pizza bagels were a fave! Now that I’m health/ingredient conscious I use Ingredient1 to find similar products with cleaner labels!
Shawna says
i used to love Kudos bars when i was in elementary school! in high school, when it was warm out, my faves were those Friendly’s Fribbles…or when we got “healthy,” crackers and hummus or NutraGrain bars. 🙂
Julie says
TOTALLY forgot about Kudos!!! I LOVED them, too!
jana says
*When pizzas on a bagel- you can have pizza anytime 🙂
Julie says
yessss! haha!
Cortni says
Hhaha I love this! I was thinking about all of my past food loves a while ago when I did a what I used to eat post. Goldfish crackers, cinnamon Poptarts, and Golden Grahams were some of my favorites! And starbursts! Which I still love, but don’t eat every single day now haha. Too funny!
Katey V. (Manis & Margaritas) says
My husband and I sing the “Pizza in the morning” jingle all the time, haha! Whenever we get pizza on the weekends, we always have leftovers and he loves to eat them for breakfast the next day. So we always end up singing the jingle!
Julie says
haha! it’s so catchy!
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
I also loved that instant oatmeal! Strawberries and cream were my favorite! I also snacked on cereal and a lot of fruit. We would also have fruit snacks and gushers as a treat.
Alyssa @ Renaissancerunnergirl says
Always loved cereal as more of a snack too – and frozen waffles with PB&J topped with apple slices! After all, as Ron Swanson would say, breakfast food = best food.
Heather @Fit n Cookies says
So funny because I consider cereal a snack too. I have no problem making myself a bowl of it after work or evening. However, it usually doesn’t keep me hungry all morning so it’s not typically a breakfast meal for me.
Katherine says
After school I use to melt chocolate chips and peanut butter together and dip pretzels. Actually….I may need to add that back into my life!
Ashley says
That cheesy avo toast looks amazing! When I was a kid, I convinced myself Fig Newtons were healthy, so I became really into eating those. It was actually kinda weird, but it made me really like them! I would also try to eat all the sugary/unhealthy cereal I could when I went to friend’s houses since I wasn’t allowed to have them at my house!
Maddie@Dixie Runs says
I used to always have peanut butter banana sandwiches or frozen chicken fingers dipped in honey!
Kersten @fitandtasty180.com says
Cheese toast was great, and also homemade muesli. My sister roasted some rolled oats in some butter, added A TON of sugar (it was so good back then!), lots of cinnamon and raisins. It was perfect with some cold milk! Then we would also spread butter on a slice of bread and cover it with sugar. I wonder where I got my sweet tooth from.
Annie B says
Oh my gosh, Bagel Bites for sure! I was also a huge fan of microwavable soft pretzels, fruit snacks, and eating uncooked Top Ramen noodles (ewwww, what?!?). Ahh, memories. 🙂
Anna says
I was all about dunkaroos and string things!
p.s they sell French toast crunch at target now!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
I used to love having leftover Kraft mac n cheese cold from the fridge, then heated up in the microwave and topped with ketchup! (hahahhahaa…so gross now!)
cleaneatingveggiegirl says
I used to love Dunkaroos! It is so sad that they don’t make them anymore 🙁
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Cosmic brownies and the packs of chocolate chip mini muffins…OMG I’d still eat them today 🙂
Katie @ Live Half Full says
I loved bagel bites! And Dunkaroos! And Chewy granola bars.
Steph says
Doritos!! (back then it was only Nacho Cheese/Cooler Ranch or bust)… Also brown sugar Pop-tarts, Nutty bars, Fudge Stripe cookies….all very healthy 😉
Jillie says
Zebra cakes, microwave Movie Butter popcorn, oreos, dunkaroos and chips and salsa!
Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me says
Wow, that snack sounds SO delicious! I need to try it out, and I actually really love that idea. My favorite snack growing up was those Kraft singles. I remember watching Full House once and they made cheese donuts by eating a circle in the middle first, and ever since that episode, it is the only way I can eat it!
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday says
Oreos dipped in milk, cereal, Pop-Tarts, pretzels and strawberries dipped in melted chocolate, and apples with gobs of peanut butter (haha some things never change) were some of my favorites!
Elisabeth says
I had lots of favorites! Cereal (especially Rice Krispies), peaches n cream oatmeal, Doritos, Pop Tarts, Toaster Streudel, Oatmeal Pies, peanut butter on saltines or graham crackers, Goldfish, Pizza Rolls (liked ’em better than Bagel Bites), etc. So many healthy choices…ha!
Jenna says
Cheese toast! What a yummy idea! I’ve never had it before but will be trying it soon. My childhood snack of choice was something with crackers like Ritz and cheese or crackers and peanut butter. I was kind of boring!
Erika says
One snack, that I will never forgive my cousin for teaching me, is Tostitos with melted Cheese Wiz and salsa. Unhealthy but oh so good.
brittanylesserfitness says
I feel like I ate everything as a kid. It depends on my age but some things that come to mind are toaster strudel’s, cool ranch doritos, cinnamon toast crunch, hot pockets, and DUNKAROOS! I could go on forever lol
Lindsey says
Dunk a Roos!!!
Stephanie @ My Freckled Life says
Oh man, I can’t even look at pizza rolls or bagel bites anymore without getting nauseated. I was at a birthday party sleepover in elementary school (so I was probably like 8ish?) and we literally ate so many of those things that I got sick. To this day I can’t even smell them… blech!!
My favorite (and oh so healthy) snacks were always poptarts (brown sugar for the win) and dunkaroos. I was definitely a big cheese toast fan too. AND now I want some…
Janet Pole says
I was never allowed snacks after school. Or at any time.
Yoojin says
i remember drinking sunny d after school daily! not exactly orange juice, but it was oh so refreshing.. lol
Veronica says
How could you not remember that jingle .. DUNKAROOS!!! Amazing!!!
Kim from MN says
I remember the pizza bagels jingle!! My mom used to bake, so I’d often come home to chocolate chip cookies or cookie bars (from scratch!) And then sometimes we were lucky enough to have Doritoes! Pop-tarts were my main breakfast food. My mom fed us very square meals (she was a nurse), so everything else was vegetable/protein/starch at every meal, so after school was for fun time!
kristin says
It’s so funny that you ate your cereal dry! I always have and still do! Everyone looks at me weird when I pour myself a bowl of cereal and then just sit down and start eating it with a spoon.
