Cardio + Core Burn Bootcamp Workout

September 24, 2015 by Julie 42 Comments

Now that I’ve made my return to fitness after Chase’s birth, I am feeling more and more excited about working out. If you’re in a fitness rut, sometimes time away from the gym is all you need to reenergize your enthusiasm for exercise. My six week break made me realize just how much I really do love working out for the way it makes me feel inside more than anything else. I feel more alive and positive after a workout and also more productive. It’s almost like the momentum from a morning workout carries me through the day and earlier this week, I tried a new workout that left me absolutely buzzing! I joined my friend Brittany for a cardio + core workout at Burn Bootcamp, a bootcamp for women that originated in Charlotte. (Burn Bootcamp actually just became a franchise in early 2015 and more locations are opening in the southeast United States!)  I’ve heard only great things about Burn Bootcamp since we moved to the area last year and had it on my radar to try after Chase was born.

Burn Bootcamp

I’m so glad Brittany encouraged me to give it a shot because I absolutely loved it. The workout we did reminded me a lot of the workouts I personally create for myself and the circuits I’ve put together for clients at the gym in the past. The big difference? In a group exercise environment, I can’t cheat my way out of burpees, tuck jumps or other more challenging exercises like I can when I’m doing my own thing. Oh the beauty of a group fitness class!

The bootcamp workout began with a five minute warm up that included jumping jacks and jogging outside before it was time for the “meat” of the core and cardio class. Below you can see a 20-minute cardio and core-based workout that is very similar to the one we completed in the class. I was red-faced and incredibly sweaty by the end but enthusiastically told Brittany I will absolutely be back. I LOVED it!

Cardio Core Workout

Before the class was done, we had one final challenge to complete. We completed two rounds of the following cardio core burner:

  • 2 minutes: Alternate 10 tuck jumps with 20 toe taps
  • 2 minutes: 1 minute plank, 30 second plank left, 30 second plank right

I couldn’t leave without thanking BBC owner, Morgan, for such an awesome workout (and for her permission to share a little bit about my experience on the blog). Morgan and her husband own Burn Bootcamp and she’s currently 18 weeks pregnant! I also had fun saying hi to Brittany’s two adorable girls before it was time to say goodbye. (Burn Bootcamp offers childcare while you workout. I’m planning to bring Chase there in the future but wanted to check it out first before bringing him along.)

I’m already looking forward to more bootcamp workouts in the future!

That’s awesome that you’re getting right back into your fitness routine! My daughter is 7 months old and I’m still struggling to find time after work to be active. I’ve tried doing T25 during nap time but her naps are shorter than a DVD!

I know exactly how you feel! My youngest is also 7 months, and I have a 2 year old and an almost 6 year old. When the naps don’t line it it can be seriously hard to find the time to workout. I’m restarting Asylum because there aren’t any good gyms near me, and I just hope that my toddler will jump around with me and not get bored…
Once it cools off here I’ll be able to toss them in the stroller and go running, which will make working out much easier.

I would like to hear about high intensity training like this, with jumping, and stages of pregnancy…

When I was pregnant, I found that I had to modify and eliminate most plyometric/jumping exercises because they just felt wrong/uncomfortable for me beginning in my second trimester. The general rule of thumb is that you can do what you did pre-pregnancy during pregnancy as long as it feels okay, but obviously talking with your doctor is best!

Getting back into working out after baby is so hard!!!! Mostly because, um, down there just is never the same and I honestly feel like bad things will happen. And then there is the childcare issue. I love how there is childcare for Chase, I always feel so guilty dropping my kids off in childcare for a workout. Guess I just need to relax.

Hi Julie! I just started following your blog this summer, and LOVE it! I also live in the Charlotte area (Huntersville), teach group ex fitness classes, and welcomed a new baby girl 10 days ago. Your blog was a tremendous resource for me during my pregnancy.

As soon as I have clearance from my dr, I want to try a BBC class. Which location did you go to?

Love finding a new workout to re-energize after feeling blah during normal routines! What is a toe tap? Sorry if it’s a dumb question, I just have never heard of that exercise. I actually refer to my husband’s “dance moves” as toe tapping lol

Quickly tapping your toes up on a bench (or, in this case, the curb of a sidewalk)! Here’s a picture demo: http://www.ipcphysicaltherapy.com/CardiovascularExercises.aspx

I am in a fitness rut for sure. Ever since my boyfriend’s father passed away unexpectedly, life has been one heck of a roller-coaster. I’m hoping after a weekend back home with my family will clear my mind and I can get back on my schedule of AM workouts and cooking healthy foods!

Hey Julie! Love your blog, have been reading it for years! I live in Charlotte too, and have a great workout suggestion for you. Try Hilliard Studio Method. It’s an amazing workout (barre, cardio, Pilates), and it has changed my body. A mom and daughter started it and it’s great for expecting, or new moms.

Can you tell me what a membership to BBC typically costs? I am weighing this vs a gym that had Les Mills classes offered for my next workout option and wanted to see what the difference in price might be. Thanks so much!
