Tonight was dad/daughter dinner night!
My mom is out of town through tomorrow, so my dad took me and my sister out for a dinner with “his girls.”
We went to the Vinoy Clubhouse for a laid back meal that began with freshly baked bread and butter.
For my entrée I ordered the Mexican roasted corn salad purely for the roasted corn. Fortunately there was a lot more corn and beans hidden under those lettuce leaves than the picture would have you believe!
Dessert was chocolate cake split three ways.
My fork made a beeline for that whipped cream. It was the real deal and didn’t taste overly sweet, but perfectly thick and creamy.
I actually went into dinner without much of an appetite because I did some baking earlier this evening.
Strawberry cupcakes! (Pre-frosting, obviously.)
The weather in St. Pete took a turn for the worse around 4 p.m. The pouring rain prevented my planned trip to the dog park with Sadie after I was done working, so baking became plan b. And by baking, I clearly mean eating cake batter, hence my lack of an appetite at dinner.
I absolutely love baking in general, but baking when there’s a thunderstorm outside may be one of my all-time favorite activities. It just feels like you’re supposed to so something warm and comforting when the weather is crummy.
Hoping for a sunny day tomorrow!

Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
Cake batter is a pretty good dinner. Cookie dough is an ever better dinner.

awww it’s so cute you guys have dad/daughter dinner~for some reason it kind of makes me emotional! haha. maybe because I’m also listening to Yiruma’s “kiss the rain” song. If you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend it!!!! 😀
samantha @ peach in the city says
after I accidentally on purpose eat my weight in cake batter while “baking,” salads taste amazing.
Khushboo says
Sounds like a great evening- love that pic of you & your dad 🙂
Courtney @ Outrunning Insecurities says
I love cooking and baking, especially in the winter, but I definitely think that the best part of either activity is eating the final product. My absolute favorite thing to bake is cookies, but sometimes the batter doesn’t always make it to the oven 🙂
Haley @ Housegirl Haley says
Baking during stormy weather sounds heavenly. I’m from Florida too, so I’m very familiar with the afternoon showers that pop up nearly every day after it’s been gorgeous all day. I love it though…just as long as I don’t have to be anywhere or have my hair look nice 🙂
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says

Just came across your blog recently 🙂 I’m somewhat nearby, living in Tampa. Your comment about the need to do something warm and comforting in crummy weather made me smile, because it’s so true! I have secretly loved the rainy weather this week – minus the wet pawprints we now have all over our floor! But…more of an excuse to cuddle with the pup on the couch 🙂
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
Baking when it’s storming outside is the best! Now I kind of wish we’d have a good thunderstorm sometime soon 🙂
Claire says
Your dad seriously looks like a brother of my dad! They could be twins…seriously! I love doing things with my Dad, and glad you got to, too…(ok, there were a lot of “dads” in this short post…haha)
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
What a great dinner. I’m sure your dad appreciated his “daddy daughter” time. 🙂
