I know a bunch of you are Pinterest fanatics like I am and pin different images to one of your 20 Pinterest boards like there’s no tomorrow. If you’re anything like me, you rarely reference a solid 80 percent of your Pinterest boards.
I have 39 images saved to my Pinterest “Hair” board. Every time I pin a cute hairstyle, I think, “I’ll try that really soon. Probably tomorrow.”
Can you guess how many of my pinned hairstyles I’ve attempted? None.
With our big vacation right around the corner, I know I’ll be wearing my hair up a lot and figured I could turn a boring ponytail or messy bun into a cute ‘do with the help of Pinterest. I played around with my hair a little yesterday and my success was rather limited. I have the world’s thinnest hair, so many of the styles that looked beautiful and romantic on the lovely ladies of Pinterest ended up looking flat and pathetic in my hair.
And then I saw a tutorial for the famous sock bun pop up on Gina’s blog and gave it a shot.
Instant success!
I was shocked at how easy it was to do. I ended up watching a YouTube video tutorial before attempting the sock bun which also helped and couldn’t believe how well it worked in my thin hair.
I still need to figure out a way for it to look cute from the front because my gigantic cowlick makes the whole slicked-back hair thang look silly on me, but I am a fan. I think a low sock bun could be really cute for a casual day date and will be bringing my trusty sock with me on vacation.
Workout
Today’s workout was probably the last solid workout I’ll be doing for a few days.
Working out just ain’t gonna happen during my friend Leah’s bachelorette party this weekend and while I hope to sneak in a few workouts while we’re in Hawaii, Ryan and I have a pretty laid back approach to fitness on vacation. I’d love to go for a run on the beach and complete a few circuit workouts, but my priority will be on exploring, relaxing and enjoying our vacation. That being said, if any of you have a great “travel workout” you’d like to share, please feel free to do so in the comments section of this post. Perhaps one of your workouts will intrigue me and motivate me to sneak in a morning workout before we head out for the day!
As for the bachelorette party fun, a few of you have asked whether or not my girlfriends and I are still planning on going to New Orleans to celebrate tomorrow after all of the issues with Hurricane Isaac in the area.
I’ll let the bride-to-be’s Facebook status answer that question for you:
Breakfast
When I arrived home from the gym this morning, I knew we had a lot of veggies and an opened package of apple chicken sausage needed to be used up before we leave on vacation.
I made myself a bowl of scrambled eggs with leftover broccoli, cauliflower, yellow squash and chicken sausage.
I really wasn’t feeling this breakfast, to be totally honest. I think I didn’t want it because I felt like I had to eat the veggies and chicken sausage so they wouldn’t go bad while we’re away. I still ate every last bite, but would’ve preferred a bowl of overnight oats or something sweet. At least it was nutritious and will keep me full for a while!
The banana I ate on the side also gave me that little pop of sweetness that I was craving.
Question of the Morning
- If you’re on Pinterest, how often do you attempt the recipes, workouts, hair styles or craft projects that you pin?
The Pinterest board I use the most is definitely my Fitness board. It provides me with workout ideas and inspiration when I’m feeling less-than-motivated at the gym. I also pin a ton of food, craft ideas and hair photos but don’t seem to reference those nearly as often.

Last week when I went on vacay, I actually repurposed a few of your circuit workouts to make them body weight so that I can do them anywhere. That worked pretty well for me coupled with running. I love running on vacation because it feels like a great way to explore a new place and I usually get so caught up in the sights that I breeze right through the run! Enjoy!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
I actually use a good number of things I’ve pinned on Pinterest. If I ever find a recipe I want to try, it goes on my recipe board. I don’t make all of them, of course, but a lot of my dinners come from there, and if I find myself in a situation where I need to bring food to an event, my first stop is Pinterest. I don’t actually have a hair board, but this summer I’ve gone to weddings on three separate occasions and styled my hair differently each time using hairstyles I found on Pinterest. Annnnnnd just about all my strength workouts are on Pinterest. So turns out I actually use my Pinterest boards a lot! Haha.

I have way to many boards and when I try to make the recipes it turns into a big mess. Your hair in that sock bun looks so cute!
Jamily says
You inspired me to try the sock bun on my shot, very layered hair :). It worked!
Masha @TheMashaUltimatum says
I probably make 1 out of every 20 recipes I pin and everything else is just great eye candy lol. The fitness boards have really been upsetting me lately. I like the pins with motivating quotes or pictures and lately it is just the same old pins over and over again =(. I still look though..lol.

I am the worst about pinning harstyles that I never attempt! When I do try, they fail. I also have really fine/thin hair :-/
Have fun and be safe in NOLA!!!!!!
Stephanie says
I’ve been using my recipe and fitness boards more recently. I also pin your workouts to my fitness board all the time!
Agi says
I love your point about Pinterest. I’ve thought about that too, how we pin so much, but do we really use the stuff we pin. I”ve used a fair bit of the recipes that I”ve pinned and they have all turned out amazing. I also try and re-create the fashion that I pin or I purchase something that I have pinned. Your bun looks amazing by the way.
Agi:)

I love the sock bun! I spray a bit of water in my hair and put it in the sock bun and sleep with it like that over night. When I get up, my hair has so much volume and big waves! I love it!!=)
Steph @ StephSnacks says
I totally agree with you about the black hole of Pinterest! I still have so many recipes from there I’d love to complete. I do like looking around at the fashion boards, though, because they give me great ideas.
Caroline says
Somehow, someway, I will eventually try the hairstyles and recipes I pin. Someday. I love the sock bun, though! I definitely have used a low one for a date, and slicked back and up high for a business professional look. I also have a cowlick, so I have to use gel and hairspray to make it stay.
Alysha @Shesontherun says
I have used the hairstyles and fashion boards a few times. For example, I have a pair of yellow jeans and I have no idea what to wear with them. Pinterest totally helped me out! For recipes though? Not as much.
Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear says
I never end up coping things exactly, but Pinterest definitely provides inspiration in my kitchen at least once a week. Love it! As for workouts, probably a few times a month, and hair/fashion a little less than that 😛

I have a ton of Pinterest boards but the two I reference the most (and pin to the most!) are my “Fitness” and “Yummy Eats” boards. I love trying out new things!
melanie says
I’ve tried at least 5 of the recipes I’ve pinned and two of the crafts…lol. That’s out of like 200 things I have pinned. I need to quit looking and try stuff I’ve pinned so far. =)

I am literally OBSESSED with Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/britt_d/) and pin all day, everyday.
I always try the makeup looks that I pin but can rarely pull off the hair, I have the exact opposite problem you do and have the worlds THICKEST hair so some cute do’s that use bobby pins to keep it in just do not work for me! I’m going to give the sock bun a try though 🙂

Not-do-overnight oats for lunch? Do it!!

I discovered the sock bun on pinterest a while ago too and have been doing it a couple times a week ever since. My hair is also suuuper thin and even shorter than yours so it was impossible to make it look cute in a bun. The sock bun looks so good especially if you havent washed your hair and it’s a little greasy 😉

I’ve done a “landmark” workout before, which may be a good way for you to explore and get a workout in at the same time! Basically all you do is start jogging on the beach at a comfortable pace, then you pick a landmark (a tree, rock, sign, etc.) and sprint to that spot. Once you reach that landmark you quickly stop and complete 25 reps of any exercise (burpees, mountain climbers, pushups, whatever your lil heart desires). Once you complete 25 reps, you start the sequence over; sprinting to a new landmark and completing 25 more reps of a different exercise!

Trish from Love, Laughter and A Touch of Insanity is hosting a Pin it and Do it challenge this month. I challenged myself to do 10 pins but I think I only did 8. Before I go to the grocery store, I look at some of my food pins so I can buy what I would need to make a few.

cute sock bun!! I immediately thought of hurricane drinks, too once I heard you were headed down there! haha!

So, here’s a question. Since hoarding became really familiar because of TLC, think “Online Hoarding” will become a thing? Everyone I come across says they pin stuff all the time but hardly use any of it!
peanutbutterfingers says
haha!

For the most part I don’t actually use the pins I pin, except when it came to planning my wedding! I sincerely used Pinterest like crazy! I sent the photographer a bunch of fun photos I had pinned, and a lot of the decorations and personal touches were Pinterest inspirations. Pinterest is a dream come true in the wedding planning world!
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says
I’m the world’s laziest person when it comes to my hair. I brush it, that’s about it. If I’m going somewhere fancy, I might add some mousse or volumizer.
I have really thin hair and a super wide forehead, so updos and high ponytails look kind of terrible on me. Le sigh.
Chelsea @ Dine & Dash Diaries says
I have used several recipes from Pinterest, and it’s really hit and miss. Sometimes I will find something AMAZING (I’ll have to link to those on my blog!), but other times I pic the bad ones and waste a bunch of ingredients.
I haven’t done much in terms of hairstyles from Pinterest, but I’d like to! I need to get on my beauty game 🙂
Annette@FitnessPerks says
I totally have a hair/beauty board that I’ve never even attempted to look at….GAH! Must try some of that stuff out! 😉
Jess Mathias says
Love the sock bun! Now you can try the sock bun curl 🙂 It gives your hair curls when you sleep. Put slightly damp hair in the sock bun, sleep on it (or leave several hrs), take out and perfect curls. I love it 🙂
Pinterest is a black hole. I love it though.
Josie @ Clean-Eatz says
I actually had to make a specific board of “Food to Try” because it seemed to get lost in a general healthy recipes board. So far I’ve done 1 recipe from “Food to Try” the rest of the boards are there to try……one day I’ll get to it I’m sure…..maybe a day in a year or two lol.
Stephanie says
I have to say, I’m addicted to Pinterest in the worst way but I’ve only tried one thing I’ve pinned. It was a step-by-step on how to get better looking nails, and it did work! I’ve yet to try any recipes but I will definitely not stop pinning them!
Katy says
I’m totally with you as far as vacation workouts go. If I can choose to do something active (like kayaking or hiking) that involves enjoying the new area and having fun, I’ll do it. But I’m not going to slave away in the gym the way I do at home.
That being said, I totally try to sneak in a workout at the airport. It began out of boredom (who really can sit contently for 2 hours?) but became a fun and sneaky challenge. I’ll do wall sits, dips, squats, inclined pushups (on the edge of a seat), calf raises, etc. It passes the time quickly and totally works if you wear comfortable travel clothes like leggings or something. Plus, it’s soooooo much fun to freak out other nearby travelers 🙂 Happy travels!
Amanda says
I’ll be honest, I haven’t tried a LOT of the things I’ve pinned. I tried a hairstyle, and it was easy and I loved how it looked on me. I did a DIY workout top, also easy. And a brownie in a mug, which I make way too often! Haha! I think once I start cooking for myself more often/live on my own, I’ll make more of the recipes I’ve pinned and try some of the decorating tips.
Kathryn says
Soooo excited for you to go to Hawaii! Its also refreshing to hear that your focus will not be trying to cram workouts in. You and Ryan are pretty diligent in those workouts to the point where you both really deserve to be more chillax while you are still young! I took my entire vacay (although only 1 week) off from working out to be with my husband and relax and let me tell you it was fabulous and I was refreshed and raring to go when I got back!
Tara says
By far I use my recipe boards the most. It has really encouraged me to “up my game” with cooking! I have organized them by “Main Courses”, “Breakfasts”, etc. to make it easier. I also created a “Tried and True Recipes” board that I move the recipes over to once I’ve tried them. That also gives me a little motivation, because moving them over gives me a feeling of accomplishment! Have a wonderful trip 🙂
Lizzie says
I use my recipe boards a lot as well as my makeup board…I have one pin that pairs expensive makeup against drug store makeup and they are often an identical match. I’ve bought a drugstore bronzer and lipstick that is the exact same as a Benefit bronzer and Mac lipstick.
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Ohh your bun turned out so cute!! Good job! I do the sock bun ALL-THE-TIME! Like at least once a week! What works best for me is to actually use 2 socks for a little added thickness to my bun! And I’ve done a few of the hairstyles on my board, but not too many. But the board I really do use is my health one- I’m constantly making Pinterest recipes! The one that’s never used? DIY haha
Michelle says
I always make variations of the recipes I pin…but I need to branch out and pin more than recipes and quotes…oh and workouts…best part about pinterest for sure!

My friends and I have started doing Pinterest parties, so that we can actually try some of the amazing things we have pinned on there!
In August we did a recipe party that ended up with us having Zucchini Lasagna, Potatoes, Hocus Pocus Rolls & Snickers cake! Very yummy!
Next month we are going to try crafting! Maybe you could get some girlfriends together to try some recipes/hairstyles you pinned!

I need to try this sock bun since it seems to be all the rage. I have a ton of hair, so I imagine my bun will be jumbo sized.
I have had moderate Pinterest success, but I recently had a big win with spray painting painters tape and decorating some simple ikea frames. I LOVE the results.

Hey Julie,
I have been meaning to try the sock but hairstyle for a long time and you reminded me of it! Those cute hairstyles on pinterest are great inspiration, but hard to actually make happen. Thanks for the tutorial! I found another great tutorial if any of your other readers have a lot of layers like me. This one was easy and perfect for all the little pieces that fall out.
