I make breakfast bowls a lot, often using Greek yogurt as my base before throwing in yummy add-ins like fruit, nuts, chocolate chips or cereal.
Today’s breakfast bowl was one of the best breakfast bowls I’ve ever made.
I owe it all to barley.
Last night I cooked some pearled barley on the stove top before putting it in the fridge to save for this morning.
I topped the cold barley with a cup of Fage Greek yogurt and thawed sliced strawberries.
I added a little sweetener and stirred up the mixture before digging in.
The barley was a fantastic additional and really appealed to my texture-loving side. It was chewy and almost nutty tasting and complimented the sweetness of the strawberries perfectly. Success!
I also sipped on a hot mug of The Mighty Leaf chocolate mint truffle tea.
Workout
A fellow gym-goer asked me a funny question today: “Is there a method to your madness?”
He said he always notices me hopping from machine to machine. I explained that machine hopping is something I do when I am trying to fight boredom and keep myself entertained throughout my workout.
When using cardio machines at the gym, do you do your entire workout on one machine or do you hop around?
Today’s machine maddness cardio workout looked like this:
- 15 min. stair master
- 15 min. adaptive motion trainer
- 5 min. stair master
- 15 min. elliptical
I really wanted to run today, but I have a blister that’s bothering me from my five mile run on Sunday and I didn’t want to irritate it further. Oh well. I still left the gym nice and sweaty!
After my walk with Sadie and a hot shower, I prepped tonight’s dinner. I’m excited because I think it’s going to be a good one. 😀

I have definite “machine hopping” days– usually when I’m bored too!
I love barley– such great chew!

Whenever I am doing cardio machine I tend to hop around too….I get too bored on one thing unless of course it is the treadmill! 🙂

That looks delicious – I love barley, but I had never thought to use it as a breakfast ingredient before! such a good idea…
As for the gym I’m definitely a one machine kind of girl, not really sure why but once I start somewhere I just don’t ever feel the need to move.

I just tried cardio hopping in 15 minute intervals the other day and LOVED IT! I knew i looked kind of crazy but it was one of the best workouts i have had on the cardio machines in a while. I did:
15 min bike
15 min jog on the treadmill
15 min arc trainer
15 min elliptical
the hour flew by!

this totally reminds my of my “fight boredom” workouts. 🙂

I have lately been trying to spice up my workout, mostly with some interval training on the treadmill. It makes the runs go by faster, and you get a better workout too!

haha.. I forgot how much fun it is to switch up machines.. Since I have been training or my half all I been doing is running but I miss doing my 20 minutes on 4-5 different machines..

Cardio hopping is better than bar hopping 😀 Or at least I tell myself this!

I always see people hop on and off cardio machines too, and I was wondering what the benefit of it was. But I suppose if your heart rate is still pumping high, than you’re doing well. Right?
I can’t run anymore (and I find the elliptical quite difficult to use lol) for a little while – due to a soccer injury. But I really love the WAVE machine. It mimics skiing/snowboarding movements and it kind of looks like an elliptical, but it goes sideways, instead of back and forth like an elliptical. I <3 it and it works my legs like mad!

that sounds awesome! i’ve never seen anything like it at my gym (or any gym for that matter). i’m intrigued!!!

I would have never of thought to but barley in yogurt!
PS–I read your reply to jamie about your hair. Straightener huh? When my hair gets long enougn in like a year, I’ll be askin you more questions about it haha

Do you use the plain fage?? Does it taste like the Oikos plain…b/c thats a litte to sour tasting for me! Also, I’ve been using naturual Agave as sweetner in everything now and I love it!
peanutbutterfingers says
they definitely taste similar. i have to add sweetener to mine to enjoy it, unless i’m using it as a sub for sour cream or something. adding honey to the yogurt makes it delicious!!!
