Our vacation is officially underway. I’m blogging from the sky, about three hours into our five-hour flight from Miami to Lima. (This post will be published once we land and I have internet access again.)
Today has been a day of travel. While waiting for hours in an airport might normally be not-so-fun, when you’re traveling with five of your favorite people, it becomes a little bit more of an adventure. Especially when your husband’s fear of flying compels him to coerce your dad into spending half of a long layover in Jose Cuervo’s Tequileria. (For what it’s worth, Ryan is actually doing much better with his fear of flying. Thank goodness!)
Right after we arrived at the Miami airport, we wasted no time finding a spot to sit down and order lunch. We all agreed that Mexican food sounded appealing and grabbed a table at a restaurant in the terminal. (I cannot remember the name, but it had a Corona theme.)
We ordered beeritas to kick off the vacation!
I love margaritas but have never had a beerita before and I must say I am a fan.
For my main meal, I ordered the taco salad which was delicious.
My mom and sister ordered the exact same thing and we all agreed that the salad was a winner. The crispy shell was the highlight!
Once we were full, we hung out at the gate until my dad, Ryan and I decided to pass the time in Jose Cuervo’s Tequileria. A little after 4 p.m. we headed back to the gate, boarded the plane and settled in for the long flight.
Within an hour or so of our departure, dinner was served.
Based upon appearance alone, I had a feeling I wouldn’t like this meal very much, but I was pleasantly surprised and ate almost all of it with the exception of about half of the roll because it was quite dry.
Now I’m hoping to power down my laptop and finish reading the rest of Mindy Kaling’s book.
I started reading it on the flight to Miami from Jacksonville and was instantly hooked. I’ve laughed out loud a lot! The book is basically a series of humorous stories and essays and is a very fast read. (I have about 40 pages to go.) If you’re looking for a fun book that is easy to read and will make you laugh, I highly recommend it!
I’m also hoping to sneak in an hour of sleep before we arrive in Lima. Tomorrow is going to be a very full day and I want to have lots of energy!
Goodnight!

I’m a little uneasy with flying myself and often find a mid-flight cocktail helps ease the anxiety nicely. Hope you have a gurreat trip

I hope you have a fabulous vacation! All of your recent traveling has me itching to take a trip… I think I may need to start working on that this week. 🙂

I am weird and don’t mind sitting in an airport. I had a string of bad flying experiences where I spent a TON of time in airports and I have just come to accept it. It would be a lot more fun with people I wanted to be around.
Linz @ Itz Linz says
can’t really ever go wrong with taco salads that come in a taco shell!! hehe

Hey! I loved Mindys book…,even if you’re not a huge fan of Andy Cohen or Tina Fey, I recommend picking up both of their books. Very similar to Mindys! Fast, fun read and they make you smile:)

I am so jealous of your trip! I am a Spanish teacher and have traveled to lots of Spanish-speaking countries, but I haven’t gotten to South America yet. Peru is high on my list! My mom went to Ecuador and loved it. Have fun and I am so excited to love vicariously through you during this trip!
Also- I always add a bottle of Corona to my margaritas in the blender now! It cuts some of the sweetness and it’s just sooo good,

I think the actual traveling part of vacation is so much fun. That taco salad looks amazing. It’s the great debate ranch dressing or French around where I live.
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
That’s nice that they served a meal! When we flew to Hawaii, we only got lunch on the way there because we were sitting in first class (free upgrade), but on the way back we sat in coach, and we got nothing. And it’s such a long flight!

I have Ryan’s similar fear of flying. I used to have 3 cocktails before boarding a flight to help with the anxiety, but even that wasn’t enough! I’ve tried everything – Dramamine, wine, not sleeping the night before, etc.
The one thing that has worked was Xanax – I just tried it for the first time last week on a flight to DC. It didn’t get rid of my anxiety completely, but it definitely helped! And doctors are willing to prescribe a small dosage for people who have a serious fear of flying!
Sara @ Fitcupcaker says
I hate flying too! Alcohol always helps!

I was hooked to Mindy’s book instantly, too. While I was at school I never read anything but mathematics material but his is one of the handful of books I could NOT put down. Love her and her sitcom. 🙂 I’m glad the Beeritas helped ease Ryan’s fear of flying! lol
Nicole @ FruitnFitness says
I’m glad Ryan is doing better with his fear of flying. Hope the rest of your flight went well 🙂

That book is hilarious! Enjoy. I love Mindy Kaling. Another funny and easy read is Tina Fey’s Bossypants which made me laugh out lou numerous times but most memorably – in a packed bus station, when I was sitting on my own 🙂 Awkward!

Julie,
I am relived to hear that your husband is afraid of flying. My boyfriend is as well, and I thought he may be the only young-ish person left. Like Ryan, Mark gets better with each flight we take. He also prefers to pass the time grabbing a couple beverages to ease his nerves.
Have a great trip!

Why haven’t I heard about this book?? I listen to Tina Fey’s Bossy Pants during holiday driving and LOVED it. We kept having to pause the audio because we were laughing to loud to hear the narration. I’d love to find this as an audio version for a driving session.
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny says
I love Mindy Kaling but for some reason I couldn’t get into the book. Maybe it’s because I listened to it – I’ll have to give the book version another try!

I am with Divya! Xanax and a Dramamine and no more fear of flying! My family physician has known me for years and has no problem writing a prescription for just a small dose for a trip. It works!!! Have fun with your family on your vacation!
