Winter Boot Camp Workout
I’ll dive into today in a second, but first I wanted to share a sweaty workout I completed yesterday. It was a boot camp style workout (my favorite!) and worked the whole body while also seriously elevating the heart rate.
Not too shabby!
Moving onto today…
Teaching + Breakfast
My workout today was planned for me since I had to head off to teach a 6 a.m. indoor cycling class. I really, really love my little 6 a.m. crew! They’re a dedicated bunch and surprisingly energetic and engaging at such an early morning hour. As I took the class through the warm up, I asked them to shout out any music preferences for future playlists and this was the feedback I received:
- Absolutely no Justin Bieber
- All Pitbull all the time! (I was happy to hear this because I had two Pitbull songs on today’s playlist!)
- More country music (<— This one surprised me, but I love country music, so I’m all for it!)
- No Pink (Another surprise! I think a lot of Pink’s music is upbeat and motivating!)
Interesting, right!?
Once I was done teaching cycling, I drove to Starbucks for a peppermint vanilla latte to kick off my morning.
It was a venti kind of day!
By the time I arrived home, I was ready for breakfast and ate an apple while waiting for two pieces of Whole Foods’ seed and grain bread to toast.
I topped my toast with almond butter and dug in.
Now it’s time to grab a much-needed shower before working again (no more teaching today) and then I’ll be heading out to Girls On The Run a little later. It’s our last week of practice and I’m getting so sad!
Question of the Morning
- If a group exercise instructor asked you to shout out your workout music preferences, what would you say?
- Is there a specific song on your “never play” list?
I would say please never play Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ and I’d request more EDM. Give me something upbeat with a solid beat and I’m usually a happy camper!
Kelly Runs for Food says
When I work out I like to listen to music that’s not all over the radio. It’s like I have special music that’s only for workouts, so I look forward to it more. Stuff like Prodigy really gets me moving if I’m doing cardio!
Julia says
I’d say Kelly Clarkson (Gone), Train, Yellowcard, Anberlin, and I’d love to see a country playlist because I’m so unfamiliar with country.
Michelle Hunt (@PeachyPalate) says
Yep I’m totally a pink fan!! I love my Sunrise Spin classes! No better way to start the day! We had super spin this morning…4 tabata’s in the middle of it, killed me!
Alex @ get big, go to work says
Carrie Underwood! Her music is usually upbeat and catchy.
Vanessa says
I just wanted to say thank you for these workouts! It’s so nice to have fresh, new workouts to do since I do the majority of my workouts at home!!:)
jenchall says
I think I’m in a line with a lot of the previous comments – no pink, no beiber, and for the love of all thats holy, no techno.
I love a good mashup, old school hip hop, and rock/hard rock/alternative. My spin instructor has some great hip hop/rock mashups that his DJ friend makes – I wish I could buy most of them, they’re so good.
ErikaMC says
‘I’m gonna take that mountain’ by Reba McIntire gets to running faster every time.
No Beiber ever.
Jennifer says
I would say 80’s music all the way. I find them so motivating to work out to. I have to comment on the peppermint vanilla latte! I got a peppermint mocha before work today and I was in heaven! It’s my new favorite coffee drink. 🙂
Siena says
I am going to try that workout tonight after work! I love working out to the song clean bandit, rather be at the moment. The beat is just so great!
Chelsea C says
This workout is perfect timing! I was just looking for a cardio/total body workout to do tonight at home (I have a dinner to go to so I’ll get home after it’s too late to go out for a run!). As for music, I’m a big fan of Ed Sheeran’s upbeat stuff and anything 80’s (noshame..), they always have the best, fun beats! 🙂
Traci says
I’m surprised about no Pink, too! But I think her music is polarizing for some reason, people either love it or dislike it. I like anything with a good beat, and positive words are a plus.
Mandi says
Thanks for posting the workout! I just did it at home and man did I work up a sweat. My half marathon training starts up again in a few weeks and I’m looking forward to incorporating some of these workouts in with my cardio. Thanks!!
Jessica McB. says
Some of my favorites are Passion Pit, Queen, Arcade Fire, M83 and for my yoga classes, I love Krishna Das.
I recently took a class that was boot camp style and the music the trainer played reminded me of Rocky, but none of the songs had lyrics, it was all instrumental. It was good for the first song but not for the whole workout. That’s great you asked your class what they like because everyone will be motivated and prefer different music.
Leslie Barnhill says
If my instructor asked, I would say more rock, even hard rock (not Guns and Roses). I know that this might not be the popular, but as a former instructor, adding a song in here and there, really brought out the quieter students. Sorry to go against the grain, but I think you need to know that there are people like me out there in your classes!
Amy @ Amy M4gic says
Last week, my spin instructor actually did ask for music recommendations and I immediately suggested the Mortal Kombat theme song! It might seem like a bizarre choice, but it has a really high BPM, which makes it perfect for spin or jump rope!
Meghan says
As much techno/electronic music as possible! I definitely use BPM to pace myself and/or challenge myself so the beat makes me want to keep going and push myself harder! I say absolutely no Kanye…
Jennifer says
I would ask for anything 80’s or 90’s dance/hip hop and absolutely no Nickelback, my spin instructor last week played one of their songs during a hill climb and it was brutal! Today we did sprints to Geronimo by Sheppard, that’s a catchy tune 🙂
Kate says
I have a few tried and true spin tunes that never fail to get my legs moving. List of Demands by Saul Williams is one (anyone remember that Nike commercial?). Another is Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio.
Mary @ Gold Layer Cake says
I agree with the NO PINK suggestion. I think most of her ‘workout songs’ are very overplayed. It tends to get boring to hear the same song too many times.
EmilyAnne says
I like upbeat songs that I already know the words to. I do not sing out loud by any means, but love to get lost in the song and forget I am even working out. Those kind of classes fly by for me. I also had a teacher that always played the same song before her cool down song. I loved that because without even saying anything I knew this was the end of class, so give it my all. http://www.eatallovertheworld.weebly.com
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
I am not a fan of Happy either. I really tried bc of the name and lyrics, but the song did not make me happy. Thanks for the workout! Bootcamps are my favorite too and I am hoping to teach some after getting my NASM certification!
Suzi Gerson says
I’m fairly new to the “workout world” – joined a CrossFit gym about 8 weeks ago and am doing their bootcamp classes. I LOVE IT! This reminds me of that, but doable at home. One question – What is a reverse crunch?
Corry says
If you google reverse crunch, there will be sites that come up with a video. Hope this helps.
Kim says
I’d be yelling out r&b and hits from the 90’s, 2000’s, and today. There are so many options, but these are only the first that popped into my head:
Sean Paul – Get Busy
Ricki Lee – Can’t Touch It
Romantic – Karyn White (this is from ’91, and based on some of the old songs you posted loving and rediscovering a few months ago, I think you’d love this)
Cascada – Evacuate the Dance floor
Crystal Waters – 100% Pure Love
I also love the spanish version of Bailando by Enrique Iglesias, but it’s more of a warm up song. (P.S. the video with the dancers and the woman in the red dress is mesmerizing!).
There’s more, but that’s a start. 🙂
livitant says
Toast plus almond butter is such a delicious go to!! I love it for a quick morning meal!
Nicole @ Runs & WODs says
Love the workout!! I’m usually the quiet girl in the class and never say anything. There’s no song I really wouldn’t play unless it doesn’t pump people up!
Sara @ Share the Health Nutrition says
Anything Britney Spears! Or rap…I love it when my cycling instructors play rap. I’ve also been hearing some Beastie Boys (random) on their playlists and like that. It gets you good and angry. I also love “welcome to the jungle” in spin as well!
systers5 says
Can’t wait to do this workout!
Rachel @ Blonde with a Chanse says
Love this workout!! It won’t let me pin it for some reason though 🙁
JessicaBrie says
The only request I really have is that the music BPM matches w/ the workout – nothing is worse then trying to get into the “groove” of the workout only to have the music be off beat! I don’t really like anything too over played like YMCA or It’s raining men lol – but anything else is ok!
Katie says
I am all for Backstreet Boys and N*Sync! One of my cycle instructors throws them in once in a while and it never fails to put a smile on face and get me moving!
Jayme M. says
Hooray! Someone else who isn’t head over heels for Pharrell’s “Happy” song! As an optimist, I find it funny that a song called “Happy” has the opposite effect on me. I even tried to like it, but that just made it more annoying. You definitely come across as the optimistic type. Do you find the irony of hating this song humorous, too?
Maggie @ Veg Fiend says
That toast looks so good. Bahh salivating
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
Ahh thank you for this workout! I always love your bootcamp ones!
I’d say never play country music but definitely include some Beyonce and Little Mix!
Bri says
For some reason, I’ve found myself on the “no Pink, ever, please!!” train, too! Workout music for me has to have motivating lyrics, so I always love Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” to kick off a workout (how cliche/lame am I?!) P.S. Your toast/almond butter combo looks delish! Have a great day 🙂
Ashley @ Sweet Carolina Belle says
I agree with the comment about no Pink. Her songs are motivating but sometimes get on my nerves for an unknown reason. My go to song for running is Stronger my Kanye West. It has been on every race playlist so when I hear it, it reminds me of the races I have run before and always give me and extra pep in my step!
autumn says
You always order the most interesting drinks at Starbucks that I would never think to order when I was there but when I read them here I think yes, why didn’t I think of that!
Emily says
great workout for being snowed in!
I would have to say never ever play christmas music – even an upbeat remake. it reminds people of being in a busy store or waiting in line..not motivating at all!
and I absolutely loath “happy” as well. UGH makes me so un-happy!!
