Today started off on a great note with a mother/daughter workout!
My mom, sister and I headed off to Jazzercise after breakfast this morning and it was one of the most energetic classes I’ve taken in a while! My mom’s studio recently underwent some management changes and I think it will be a good thing in the end because one of the new owners taught today’s class and the energy in the room was on fire. Though I love Jazzercise most of the time, I will wholeheartedly admit that the class depends a lot on the instructor (as it is with most group exercise classes, right?), and the instructor we had today was so spunky and fun that she just made you want to dance around and sweat. It felt like an aerobics party!
We arrived home and I was ready for a mid-morning snack and fixed myself a cottage cheese and fruit bowl.
I scooped cottage cheese into a bowl and topped it with cantaloupe, strawberries and grapefruit and sprinkled it with cinnamon. A great sweet and salty protein-packed snack! I need to make this one for breakfast in the future because it was delicious.
About 90 minutes later, my dad and Ryan arrived home from their own workout at my dad’s gym and they were ready for lunch, so our little group headed out to a local deli for soup, salads and subs. (My sister’s husband had to work today.)
I opted for a large garden salad with Italian dressing and a cup of ham and white bean soup since I wasn’t overly hungry and also really wanted to get some veggies back into my diet after a few days of sparse greens!
Everything at Sun Deli was delicious but my mom and dad’s Cuzzo Subs stole the show. They were kind enough to share some with me and I loved the sub so much! It sounds like an odd combination, but Sun Deli’s Cuzzo Sub is made with pepperoni and American cheese toasted on a sub roll and topped with fresh egg salad. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it!
After lunch, Ryan and I leashed up the dogs and took Sadie and my sister and her husband’s dog Kona for a walk by the beach. The weather here is cloudy but warm enough to wear a light sweatshirt, so it’s great walking weather!
Sadie and Kona are really cute together and get along well but we always laugh and say that the first 24-hours they have together are “touch and go” as they figure out who is the alpha dog and get into a few little barking wars over food and toys and people. (Sadie is super jealous when anyone from my family loves on Kona more than her. She’s such a needy little lady.) After the first day, it’s smooth sailing and they get into a good little rhythm and play together very well!
Our walk with the two dogs, however, wasn’t exactly smooth sailing since each dog had absolutely no concept of avoiding the other dog’s leash. There were lots of untangling breaks, but eventually we got into somewhat of a rhythm and had fun! We made our way to Deck the Chairs, a neat display of decorated lifeguard chairs.
Ryan and I said we’ll have to make sure to walk down to the display later this week after the sun sets to see everything all lit up! I think it will be really neat!
And now I am off to study up on some choreography for the PiYo class I am going to be teaching in January. I have a lot of notes to take and choreography to learn so I brought the DVD with me to study up while we’re in Jacksonville. Catch ya later!
Question of the Day
- Pet owners: How does your pet do around other animals?
In general, Sadie is pretty good with other animals. She totally ignores cats and is indifferent toward most dogs unless they come into our house (“her territory”) and then she can get a little goofy and protective over certain things like her food and water bowls, certain toys and the couch (“her space”).
Sarah says
What happened to Ross’ chocolate lab? Used to make regular appearances on the blog? Did I miss something 🙁
Sarah says
I guess the whole post didn’t load where I see them both…sorry
Julie says
Yes, she’s there!!
kelsierakay says
Where’s Ross?
Julie says
He had to work today but was with us all day yesterday!
Leiah says
You are lucky Sadie ignores Cats, we have a 3 month old Vizsla puppy and she will not leave our cat alone! She will chase her around like crazy and not let the poor girl be! She is also very needy and needs all the attention…all the time 🙂 Vizslas are so silly!
Julie says
they really are such quirky dogs!! <3
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
Truckee gets really nervous around LITTLE dogs. Like, I think she’s really scared of them. Big dogs though, she feels more comfortable just because I think they’re her size. It makes me so mad when I’m out walking her or at a park and someone lets their dog walk up and sniff her and get in her face. I want people to ask if it’s okay, because Truckee is so heavy it scares me that she’ll freak out and pull me over, and I simply can’t handle a 90 lb dog who’s freaking out 🙂
athungrymonster says
My little pup, a beagle dachshund mix gets along with exactly 2 other dogs and barks at every other dog she sees lol! She is not crazy about cats either.
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
Those decorated lifeguard chairs looks pretty neat. It’s such a creative idea.
Kaci @ Running the Next Step says
My puppy is so weird. When we’re around other dogs, she’ll run over to them and then run away. It’s like she wants to play but is scared. It doesn’t matter if they’re big dogs or little dogs.
Michelle Hunt (@PeachyPalate) says
Nice kind of studying!!! 🙂 Love that your mum is so in to that class, wish I could get my mum in to something!
Annette Perkins (@FitnessPerks) says
Those lifeguard stands are pretty great!! How fun you are back in town with family, enjoy!
I totally hear ya on learning choreo over the break though-good luck! I get to learn BODYPUMP, CXWORX, GRIT, and BODYATTACK releases within the break, and that doesn’t include keeping up with new choreo for Zumba….so basically I’m listening to fitness music allllll the time in my car 😉

If you’re looking for a good pizza place while in town you should try DaVinci’s on Atlantic Blvd. It’s a hole in the wall place but it really is the best pizza Jacksonville has to offer. My husband and I go there ALL THE TIME. We also love Sun Deli as well.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
You are so lucky you mom is into fitness and love working out! I wish my mom was, haha!
Ashley says
Our Puppy (Oliver) LOVES all other animals, he just wants to play and visit, even if they don’t want anything to do with him. He’s had a couple run-ins with cats and that’s taught him to back off a little.
Carla Cooke says
My husband grew up in Avondale! I bet my in-laws were at that parade; I’ll have to ask! Such a cute community. Enjoy your holidays!
Kat @ Where the Sidewalk Ends says
Chewy is a sweetheart around all animals, including my moms goldendoodle, who is 8 years older and 65 pounds heavier. However, the two of them together are SO competitive for attention, it’s like a joke. If one is getting petted, the other MUST also have pats, and will do anything in their doggie power to get it. It’s just so funny to watch.
Rachel C says
My dog is a total jerk face around other dogs. 🙂 She’s instant bff with any person she meets. And she gets along with cats. But hates all other dogs. So no dog park trips, unfortunately.
Molly D. says
I have a beagle named Ella and she is a HOT MESS when it comes to other dogs. She never quite learned how to howl so she just sounds like a deranged hyena. Whenever she sees another dog (they can literally be nowhere near her), she goes CRAZY and commences with her hyena-like howl and will not stop growling. And, of course, once the dog gets near her she immediately rolls over onto her back as if to say, “I was just kidding. I didn’t mean it.” She is a strange one. We recently adopted a kitten named Beamer (my fiance and I were Hokies) and she absolutely adores him.
Animals are so weird hahaha. Have a Merry Christmas, Julie. I made the Pineapple Souflee for Thanksgiving this year, and for Christmas, I’m trying Mimi’s Sugar Cookies. Just bought all the ingredients I need! 🙂
Courtney! says
Our rambunctious cat is a little baby whenever she meets another animal.. hides on top of the cabinets, etc.. but our lazy, fat cat is bold as heck. Will hiss at any animals that get too close and even slept on a dog bed that someone brought for their pet once. Cracks me up because I feel like their day to day personalities reflect the opposite.
financefitness says
I can totally relate to most of your Sadie posts. I have a GSP and she’s got a whole lot of energy with no shortage on personality!
aladygoeswest says
Hi Julie! Hope you’re having a wonderful time with your favorite people. Enjoy!! 🙂
Tara J says
Unfortunately my dog thinks most cats would make a nice meal! He’s very friendly with other dogs, but mostly likes to keep to himself and his stuffed toy 🙂
Skinny Fitalicious says
What kind of workout does Jazzercise consist of? I used to be a dancer so when I hear that I think of my jazz classes I took when I wasn’t doing ballet.
Kim says
Each class is an hour, starts out with a warmup/stretch, then goes into cardio (that’s what the “top of the aerobic curve” concept is), then cool down and into weights & abs, and finishes with stretching. All choreographed to music and easy to pick up the choreo for new students. At our studio, most of the women have some sort of dance experience, even if it was 20+ years ago.
Lizzie S. says
Our cat has only been around a dog for a few hours. He sat at the far end of the hall and watched this dog for the entire night haha. We are considering adding a dog to the family eventually and praying it would go smoothly.
Angela @ HonestlyAngela says
My cat HATES all other cats. She gets super vicious and scary when other cats are around. She likes dogs though. Our neighbors have a couple dogs and she goes and hangs out in their backyard with them all the time. We always joke about our cat thinking she is a dog.
Amy M4gic says
I have two cats, who will blatantly ignore (or hide from) all other animals, with one major exception: babies. My cats are so curious about babies and toddlers, and are really good sports about having tiny fingers grabbing at them. It’s adorable 🙂
Mary @ Gold Layer Cake says
Walking with both my dogs is a nightmare because of the tangled leash problem. They also get so excited for the walk, the excitement doesn’t wear off until we’ve been walking for about 5 minutes so they are constantly jumping on each other. Haha.

Deck the Chairs- Cute!!!
Your cottage cheese bowl sounds delicious as well 🙂

Instructors make or break it for me too. I was so loyal to one yoga studio in Scottsdale and they were bought out by a massive gym and the studio closed. I followed the yoga teachers to their own studios or other studios where they taught because I refused to test the waters with new ones.

…. but have you watched Christmas Vacation yet?
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
My dogs used to be really good with other dogs but I haven’t had them interact with other dogs recently so I am scared to see how they would act.
Heidi (@idlehide) says
we have a border collie (also named Sadie) and she is incredibly submissive, she lays on her back whenever she sees her friends or new dogs. She hit an all new level last week when she was submissive to a cat. Ha! I actually took a video of it to send to my husband because it was so funny. Then I started to wonder if she would ever protect me from a coyote or anything lol!
Erika says
My Pomeranian is super friendly when it comes to other dogs, but cats, well he is always chasing them out of our yard. One day the tables were turned and the local neighborhood cat chased HIM in our yard, lol it was quite funny. I’m not sure how he’d react if we had a pet cat. I’m think he is all bark and no bite.
Becky says
Buddy couldn’t care less about other dogs, he also doesn’t know how to play with other dogs. People, on the other hand, he LOVES. He’s a big dog (80lbs) and people say he looks tough, but the worst he’ll do is lick someone to death! 🙂
Bethany says
My dog is in full denial that she is a dog and believes she is way better than all other dogs. She turns her nose up to them in a little snobbish way! She is 12 years old and has her own little personality for sure!
Holly F. says
My parents have two little dachshunds; we are pretty sure our one is part mix with a Chihuahua making her a chi-weenie 😀 My oldest (who we adopted from Louisiana from hurricane Katrina) is possessive with her food and toys. We call her the grouch.
I have to say I love Sadie! So much I convinced my boyfriend to get one when we move into our first home! I absolutely love her energy and cuddliness!
Bethany says
Misha is fine initially around other dogs, but as soon as one sniffs her in the wrong spot or gets too bouncy, she gets a little sassy!!!
Janet Pole says
and now I want egg salad…. 🙂
Beks says
Funny you should ask. I used to say that our dog is pretty good with other dogs, but this weekend, my cousin brought her new doxie puppy for a visit, and when she ran away with Frisket’s toy, he snapped at her, and nipped her ear (We were so worried he’d bitten through, but no harm was done, Thank God!). He’s really possessive of his toys (and this toy was originally S’mores’, which is why she snatched it away, I’m sure), and he’s also becoming an old grump. Think Mr. Wilson on Dennis the Menace.
Maria says
I just recently started taking PiYo classes and WOW… holy burn. I totally underestimated my first class and thought it wouldn’t be a big deal… I was wrong and now I’m addicted!
Kim says
We Jazzercised this morning too! Only 5 classes away from the 150 Club 🙂
Ashley says
haha deck the chairs is so cute!! I’ve never been in a warm weather state during christmas so I love learning about all the clever little things people do to make it seem more christmas-ey! 🙂
Cristina says
We have three dogs in my household; two medium sized mutts Callie and Maddie and a yorkie Zoe. It’s basically Zoe’s house since she’s the oldest. Callie LOVES to play and is always curious about other animals, her tail is pretty much a rudder and is always moving, she is the loving one. Maddie is more sketched out about EVERYTHING, she likes to bark from under my moms bed if someone is knocking at the front door or if someone closes the fridge! Zoe could literally care less about other animals, she’s content sitting on your lap, our couch or someones bed in the house.
Leah E. says
My 4 lb chihuahua (Nigel) has yet to realize that he IS A DOG rather than a human. So he acts offended when other dogs want to play with him like he’s a dog. He’s not mean towards them, just confused. He’s pretty much indifferent to cats. Then when humans are around he’s the biggest cuddle-bug/attention-hog in the world! He cannot get enough when it comes to belly rubs and human hugs! 🙂
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
Hi Julie! Looks like you are having a great time in Florida! Our old dog, a jack russel terrier was not very friendy around people. She liked us or to be on our own. Enjoy the time with your family!
