I filled in for an instructor who needed a sub and had a decent bunch of familiar faces mixed with some new folks. I enjoy subbing classes from time to time because it’s such a great way for me to meet new people and expose them to my style of teaching. If they dig it, maybe they’ll come to one of my classes in the future, which is always fun to see!
The 60-minute class passed by fairly quickly and we all worked hard!
(Still absolutely loving the Polar heart rate monitor I bought years ago!)
It felt good to shake out my legs on the bike a little bit because I am still sore from the barbell strength and PiYo classes I taught on Friday. Apparently a week away from teaching and gym workouts killed my poor hamstrings and quads!
Breakfast
After class, I ate a Larabar and worked at the gym for a little bit before it was break time. I left the gym and swung by a local coffee shop for a caramel almond milk latte and drove home to make breakfast, type up my morning blog post and let Sadie out.
I made an egg white and oatmeal protein pancake (I added a bit of almond butter to the batter before cooking it in the skillet for some extra staying power) and topped the pancake with a drizzle of maple syrup. Served with a banana on the side!
Lunch
After my late breakfast and lovin’ on Sadie, I drove back to the gym to work until it was time for lunch. I had about 30 minutes for lunch and teamed up with a coworker for a quick drive to Subway.
I selected the 6-inch hot ham sub on honey oat with all the veggies except jalapeños and banana peppers. And a bag of chips on the side for some salty crunch!
During lunch, my coworker asked me whether or not I watched the Oscars last night and when I told her I missed it, she immediately brought up Lady Gaga’s performance on her phone and told me I had to watch it. Oh my gosh, she sounded fantastic.
I’m so envious of people who can really sing… I swear if I could belt it out like Lady Gaga, I would harass you guys with videos of myself singing show tunes every single day. And that would obviously lead to the slow death of Peanut Butter Fingers, but, um, I’d be able to sing like Lady Gaga, so I’ll make my money selling gazillions of albums.
Anyway, after listening to Lady Gaga and finishing our lunches, we headed back to the gym to work for a little while longer until I was done for the day and headed home to park my butt at the computer and chat with you guys. I have a freelance project due today that will take up the rest of my work day, but I hope you guys have a great Monday evening!
See ya in the morning!

Lady Gaga was incredible! It was the perfect comeback to everyone hating her gloves on the red carpet.

Hello Julie! Thank you so much for the yummy pancake recipe! I love to change it around with the kids and make them different kind of pancakes…will try yours this weekend! Great blog site as well 🙂

Quite the productive and sweaty start to the week! Good woman 🙂
Angela says
I wish I could sing too! I feel like I just keep getting worse as I get older. I still like singing so my family has to listen to it all the time, but I try not to force anyone else to listen!
Sarah @ Sarah Sincerely says
Mmm..your Subway looks so yummy. I love a good Subway sandwich now and then. The only thing I don’t like about Subway is the distinct “Subway” smell that I feel like I walk out with all over my clothes. A small price to pay, though. 🙂
Taca @ A Side Of Dessert says
A workout and lunch with a friends – sounds like a perfect Monday! I loved Lady Gaga’s performance and I agree..if I could sing I would constantly be making people listen to me haha. Have a wonderful evening!
Ashley @ sweet carolina belle says
I’d love to hear about your experience with training clients and working on freelance projects. I heard subway’s promo for $5 lunch and am looking forward to going out to grab lunch one day at work! Hope your staying warm. I can’t believe they are calling for snow/ice again this week!!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
I love a sweaty workout first thing in the morning!!

Way to start your week! That Subway looks amazing!!!

Hi, Julie. Spin is an incredible workout! Should we take your HRM to indicate that you used the class as your workout too? I have to admit, it’s a huge pet peeve of mine when instructors use a class as their own workout as opposed to actively teaching the session. In spin/cycling, form is critical–knees over toes, sitting back on the seat, slightly bent arms, shoulders away from ears, etc, and an instructor really should be walking about the class and cueing individuals as to their form. I’m sure it’s super tempting to get in a great workout whir teaching, but it’s not really fair to the folks who come to your class.
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
I didn’t watch the Oscars either. Oh well. I looked at the outfits today online though! 🙂 And I took a cycle class last week for the first time in months. I forgot how hard it can be if you use the right resistance! I’m sore, but have to go teach BODYATTACK in about two hours!
Erika says
Haha, I tried to make the oatmeal/egg white protein pancake but my skillet was too small and it totally fell apart. It still tasted good though!

I loved Lady Gaga’s performance! I was blown away- I had no idea she had a voice like that! I love Subway- dang, its been a while!
Linda @ running4two says
I love a good spin class! What a great way to start the morning. 🙂 Pancakes….also a great way to start the morning.
Heather @Fit n Cookies says
I watched some of the Oscars, but definitely not much. I saw Lady Gaga’s performance today on the news, ha. I have been craving hoagies for the last few days. I totally want to get one now!
Sarah @ RunningChickago.com says
Hey Julie – your pancake looks SO delish but I don’t eat oats or almond flour (nut allergy). Any ideas for substitutes to make a healthy pancake?
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, & Beers says
I miss morning spin classes! I did them every Friday for almost a year before moving to Charlotte, but that was… uh… about 5 years ago. ha I still fit them in when I can. 🙂

Julie- I want to know more about that heart rate monitor! My hubs and I are looking into purchasing them for our workouts, and want to know how accurate they are? How often have you had to replace the battery? Do you base your workouts around achieving a certain heart rate? Recommend that to your clients? They seem to be on sale right now, so I may just hop on it! Thanks girl, hope you have a great week!
Julie says
I LOVE my Polar heart rate monitor and feel like it’s pretty darn accurate b/c when you set it up, it takes into account your age, height, weight, gender, etc. The battery needs to be replaced every few months or so. I don’t base my workouts around my heart rate, but I do find it very helpful to check during a workout to see if my heart rate corresponds to my rate of perceived exertion, which I think REALLY helps me feel more in tune to my body and better able to listen to my body during a workout. I hope this helps!!

I really appreciate the response … sounds like a worth-it gadget. PRE is good, but concrete numbers are even better! Thanks again.

Pizza and a movie is our go to when we have a free weekned. If we are lucky enough to get nice weather, taking our dogs to the dog park and breakfast are always on the agenda! You had my kind of weekend girl. Glad u enjoyed it after all of your traveling!
Sarah @ KS Runner says
Lady Gaga was incredible! She did a fantastic job paying tribute to Julie Andrews and the Sound of Music. It was beautiful. You could tell she was pretty overcome when she finished and Julie Andrews came out too. I can’t sing to save my life. My little sister got the voice in my family!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
Lady Gaga was amazing last night! I was blown away!
Amanda B @ Cupcakes & Miles says
I really enjoyed watching the Oscars this year…even though it lasted foreverrrrr. 😉 And, yes Lady Gaga was AMAZING! I thought the performance was beautiful; she toned her normal theatrics down and just let the music and her voice work its’ magic.
Jaclyn says
Hi there! I have thought this for awhile and since it’s NEDA week, I thought it was the perfect time to finally tell you what an inspiration I think you are! You have a such a balanced and healthy approach to food and fitness and I really find it wonderful to read. No joke, when I am out for a hike or a walk and I start to think I need to “giver” more (I have a history of overexercise/ED), I think “What would Julie do?” and it helps so much. It helps because I actually think you are probably overall happier and healthier and indeed, look BETTER, although that shouldn’t be the focus, than some who probably work out harder/longer/more intensely than you in the blog world (not that you don’t kill it, girl!). Anyways, big props to you for not falling prey to the over-doing it situation and know that you are much healthier and happier for it! Thanks for everything, I love your blog. I find you and Ashley at Foodn’Fitness Diaries to be very balanced. XO
Julie says
This is such a nice comment, Jaclyn, and I really appreciate the time you took to share a little bit more about yourself with me. I’m so, so happy you find this blog helpful — it’s comments like the one you left that truly motivate me to blog! Thanks so much for reading. <3
Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot says
I’ve been off my blog reading & commenting game for a while as I’ve just gotten busy w/ my own. I was so glad to pop in today & see that you’re blogging just the same 🙂 Pbf is forever a favorite! Reminds me why I love showing up each day!
Julie says
Aw, this is so sweet. Thank you, Paige! So happy you stopped by today! 🙂
Erin @ Erins Inside Job says
That performance was definitely amazing! I knew that she was a classically trained singer, but I was still pretty blown away with her rendition of the songs.
Julie says
I had no idea she was that good!! So talented!
Jessica @ kiwiyogirunner says
Your brekkie looks so good!! I adore pancakes 🙂 I wish I could sing too, I am actually the worst singer and when I used to work at kids birthday parties as a fairy I would mouth the words to happy birthday so nobody’s ears would bleed 🙁
healthyhappierbear says
I really need to try whipping up these pancakes eventually – they look great!
Allison says
Would you recommend purchasing that heart rate monitor for someone who has never owned a fitness watch? I like how affordable it is. I really want the Fitbit that has a heart rate monitor, but don’t want to spend that much money right now. I just need something for tracking calories burned during my barbell strength and boot camp workouts.
Julie says
Yes! Absolutely! It’s VERY user friendly and I’ve actually purchased the same watch for my dad, sister and Ryan and all of them love it, too. 🙂
Allison says
Thank you so much for responding! I am planning to purchase it soon. I can’t wait to use it!
Mary Beth Richardson says
So I have to say, I also love this heart rate monitor. I had one years ago, and love to watch my heart rate go up and down on a workout. It’s amazing how high your heart rate can get when you don’t feel like you’re pushing yourself to the max. When my monitor broke, the hubbs bought me a fitbit for my birthday. That was also fun to have during the summer months. If I didn’t have my daily step count in, I would go for a walk around the neighborhood until I hit my count. I’m sure my neighbors thought I was crazy, or snoopy looking at their front porch decor making notes 😉 But then THAT broke & I cannot find my battery. So I’m back to the original heart rate monitor. It’s probably one of the older models, but it’s my true standby. LOVE it!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I didn’t catch the Oscars either but saw Facebook blowing up over the Lady Gaga performance. I’m a self-proclaimed music snob and am not a Lady Gaga fan but she did sound really good. In some ways it annoys me as I feel like she’s been hiding her talent behind strange costumes and music that doesn’t actually show off her abilities, but that’s a whole other conversation…. 😉
Monica says
Lady Gaga did an incredible job. She has an amazing voice.
Am I alone in this, though, that it was very unsettling to see her look so beautiful and normal? It seemed like much more of a costume than any of her crazy outfits!
Abbi says
Reading your post about your spin class has gotten me excited for mine I’m taking tonight! I had a terrible workout last night I’m still bummed about so I’m ready to make up for it tonight 🙂
Also, have a batch of your egg white oatmeal in the fridge and am super excited to eat some for breakfast tomorrow morning! Thanks for the great breakfast idea 🙂
Denise says
Maybe I am alone on this, but to me Subway is so unhealthy- processed meats full of chemicals. I find it confusing that you are promoting them. The pancake looks yummy though!
Jamee says
I’ve been meaning to ask you, I have the same Polar watch and my battery died a little bit ago! How did you replace it?
Pamela says
Just wanted to tell you that I started making your egg/oat pancake about a year ago, and it’s still my most favorite weekend breakfast. I cook up some bacon fat or coconut oil and then dump in the oats, 2 eggs, mashed banana, vanilla, cinnamon and salt mixture. I spread it out, flip once, and serve with peanut butter, coconut flakes, sliced banana and maple syrup on top. I make a big one and split it half for my bf and me! He requests it. So, just wanted to say thank you for the inspiration!
Eva says
i really really REALLY love that gaga did that because it made so many people see her real talent. RE-SPECT!
