Hey, hey! How are you doing? My Wednesday is shaping up rather nicely so far, but before we dive into today, I wanted to quickly touch on yesterday’s 28-week prenatal appointment since I expressed some of my nerves with you guys beforehand. (Thank you so much for all of your kind comments!)
While I won’t know the results from the glucose screening part of my exam for a couple of days, I am happy to say I was blessed with a nurse angel who was so kind and patient with me when she did my blood work.
After I arrived at the doctor’s office, I drank the glucose solution (which, call me crazy, I didn’t find that horrific) and then waited for an hour before it was time for my blood work.
During my wait, I met with the doctor, heard our baby’s heartbeat (132 bpm!), asked a handful of questions and got measured. After an hour had passed, it was time for my blood work and everything went smoothly.
Though getting my blood drawn is never fun, my nurse made it just about as painless and comfortable for me as possible. I am always very upfront with doctors and nurses about my nervousness surrounding needles and was able to have my blood drawn from a private room where I could lie down rather than the open lab room where you sit up and people constantly walk in and out. I know it’s a small thing and may seem a little ridiculous to some, but it makes a big difference for me (I get queasy when I sit up and also a little embarrassed about how freaked out I feel when others around me seem to be totally cool with having their blood drawn) and I honestly hugged the nurse after she was done taking my blood and called her my new best friend. I also ended up getting a shot for the Tdap vaccine yesterday that went well, too.
I will return to the doctor’s office for another appointment in two weeks (apparently my appointments start to get closer and closer together now that I’m in my third trimester) and in the meantime, I will continue trying me best to keep our baby happy and safe in my belly!
Moving onto today…
Today
This morning I was up nice and early to take a Pure Barre class before the craziness of the day set in. The class went well and I grabbed a cinnamon dolce decaf cappuccino and spinach feta wrap from Starbucks on my way home.
I had about 45 minutes to shower, check some emails and let Sadie out before it was time for me to make my way to the gym where I worked for a couple of hours.
Around 11 a.m., I headed out to participate in a focus group for fitness professionals in the Charlotte area. I was invited through my gym to attend the lunchtime meet up at the Trump National Golf Club and was pretty excited to check out the fancy schmancy place.
The focus group centered around a product that’s due to come out at the end of the year that will essentially be able to measure how efficiently your body is burning fat through a breathalyzer-type device. We heard from scientists, product developers and marketers and gave lots of feedback while enjoying a healthy lunch. It was pretty interesting and everyone who came left with a gift card, so that was pretty sweet!
After the focus group, I had to hurry back to the gym to lead a small group training session and now I’m here chatting with you lovely people on a quick break. I hope you’re having a great day so far!
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
How the heck do you always have your desk so clean? My office is, well…. you don’t want to see it.
Also, that spinach feta wrap and I are best friends. It’s my favorite travel breakfast choice!

I too share the same feelings about getting my blood taken. I dread when I have to get it done because I always wind up passing out (even when I am laying down). Glad things went well for you today!
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
Glad your appointment went well! That focus group sounds like a lot of fun. I’d be interested to hear what they had to say about how efficient it is. Have a great rest of your day!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
What a fun lunch! I’m curious about the product!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I’m SO happy to hear that your appointment went well yesterday! I’m sure getting your blood drawn in a private room helped a lot. Lying down is always a good idea too. I do that when they take my blood pressure to help me calm down because I get anxious when they take out that silly cuff because of my history with preeclampsia. It helps me so much! I loved having my appointments every two weeks the last couple months. It’s always reassuring knowing everything is a-okay in there! xo

Did my glucose test today, didnt think the drink was that bad either haha! The hotel looks so nice!
Kate says
Back in December I fainted during a blood test – I was mentally prepared for a shorter test and they kept taking more vials, and I couldn’t deal! So they told me to ask to lie down the next time, which I did in April, and it went much better. I am slowly getting a little bit better about it, but for the foreseeable future I think laying down is a good call.
Heather@hungryforbalance says
I am so glad your appointment went well- they are so nerve-wracking! The blood glucose test is NO FUN!
That is so cool that you got to be part of that focus group!

I’m so glad to hear the appt. went well and that you got an angel nurse. They can make a huge difference in those type of experiences!
That product sounds so very cool–I want to hear more about it when you are allowed to share and/or get more details of what it will be called & when it comes out. Sounds like a fantastic lunch event!

So glad the bloodwork went well. I had to go to a Hematologist last week to get some answers about low white counts & they took ELEVEN vials of blood. While it never bothers me, I about died when I counted all of them. I asked the nurse if she was going to have juice & cookies for me afterward & walk me back to my car.
Natalie @ The Ravenous Mommy says
Glad the appt went well! The glucose test is never fun.
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
That event sounds really interesting!
I am the exact same way with bloodwork! I will absolutely turn ghostly white and pass out if I can’t elevate my feet. At my last doctor, they actually took me into one of the children’s exam rooms so I could lay down privately there. Totally get the whole feeling ridiculous thing, but really I’m looking out for the doctors and nurses too! I certainly don’t want them to have to pick my limp body up off the floor, lol!

I had my glucose testing yesterday and actually liked the taste of my drink! I’m glad your appointment went well. Understanding and nice nurses make all the difference in the world. My IVF nurse was so amazing we are naming our daughter after her.
Julie says
Oh that is so sweet! I am sure that means so much to your nurse!

the Lunch sounds interesting! if you can say – was the product to detect ketones? My dr was mentioning something that would be coming on the market soon that would be more reliable than the pee strips, but not as expensive as the blood monitoring ( ~$5/test). Anything you CAN share about the product?? pricepoint? maker? accuracy?
Julie says
Yes it was!! The company name is Levl and they’ll be launching their website officially the first week of June. They didn’t give us any information about price point or what the final product will look like/where it can be purchased just yet. They’re targeting a Winter 2015 release but it may end up being released in early 2016. It seems really neat, but I also personally feel like there a TON of obstacles they need to iron out before it’s ready to sell.

I always ask to lay down when I get blood work done! I figure it saves the nurses from having to “save me” if I were to pass out or something when they take the blood. They always appreciate that I tell them ahead of time, especially when I was pregnant! For some reason, the needles during labor didn’t bother me at all (probably as I was already laying down/in the middle of contractions/excited to meet my little one/over he pain). Glad the appt went well!
Morgan @ Managing Mommyhood says
Such an interesting product. Weird sciencey things like that always interest me!
Mattie @ Comfy & Confident says
I am glad your doctors appointment went well! It sounds like a not so pleasant process that they made much better!

Glad to hear your appointment went well! And that shrimp and avocado salad looks delish!

so glad the appointment and blood draw went well!

I’ve been addicted to the spinach and feta wrap from Starbucks lately – I must eat it at least three times a week! Such a good “on the go and didn’t plan anything” breakfast.
That breathalyzer thing sounds very cool, but also like it will be very expensive…I’ll be looking out for it!
Holly says
Oh my gosh.. you sound like me with needles! I’m ttc soon but I’ve been worried because I’m back in school finishing biochemistry… your blog has been an awesome resource for calming my nerves, though!
Also, the breath test sounds interesting… my husband may have worked with someone on the research group for the breath test. I’m going to ask him about it, definitely cool but I worry about people getting too addicted to numbers and not the overall benefits of exercise outside of just physical.
thank you for sharing!

I didn’t think the glucose drink was bad either. I had the fruit punch one, it was fine. What I thought was funny, was the nutrition info. My doctor told me that the drink had more sugar in it than I could ever consume in one sitting. I looked at the amount of sugar and was like “pssssht! This is less than a trip to IHOP for me!” 🙂
Kelly says
Thank you for mentioning the spinach feta wrap! It’s my favorite and I’ve been avoiding it because of the feta (I, too, am pregnant.) but after reading your post, I googled it and it’s pasteurized feta!!! First stop in the a.m…..STARBUCKS!!!!! Julie saves the day!
Janelle @ WhollyHealthy says
I’ve always been nervous having my blood tested but last time I nearly fainted and felt so nauseous – and the woman taking my blood had to yell for help which was super embarrassing. I have to go again and am really nervous, so I think I’m going to ask to lie down.

Love your blog and congrats on the little one. I delivered my first child, our daughter Dylan last July. Our due date was June 25th and she didn’t come until July 9th appear it was really cozy in there. We did not take any classes nor did I read any books. Well I started out doing all that when we found out I was pregnant and then I just became a stressed out pregnant lady because what to expect when expecting had every worse case situation and I swore by the end of every chapter our baby was dead or I had cancer lol. STOP consulting dr. Google it will st drive you mad. You will know if something isn’t right, I know that sounds crazy but it’s true. I’m also really glad I didn’t take the classes. To be honest the first few months with a new born is survival mode and everything you thought you knew kind of goes out the window. Also the nurses were really helpful when it came to breastfeeding and luckily Dylan latched like a champ and almost a year later we are still going strong! Looking back I might have taken the breastfeeding class but honestly don’t stress out if you dont. I promise promise promise that once that little one is in your arms you will just know what to do. Again I know that sounds nuts but it is so so true.

glad your appointment went ok! that salad looks so fresh and delicious!

I didn’t think the glucose drink was that awful either–it was syrupy fruit punch to me. I’m jealous your was clear! Mine had nasty food coloring. Oh well…
Glad your appt went well.

I got the lemon/lime flavor glucose drink and thought it tasted pretty good! lol.
I guess it helps that I like sprite flavored things! 🙂
