Saturday
My Saturday morning began super early when I couldn’t turn my brain off at 5 a.m. Eventually I decided not to fight it and headed downstairs to work until my boys and Sadie were up for the day.
Truth be told, I kind of liked easing into the weekend with a cup of coffee and some solo time. Everyone else was up for the day around 7 a.m. and that’s when the fun began! We ate breakfast together (a combination of French toast and a frittata) before driving to the gym for yoga!
I’ve been trying to make it to one or two yoga classes a week these days and really, really look forward to taking a class with Ryan on the weekends whenever possible. It reminds me of our pre-baby days when we’d workout together almost every morning!
Once Chase was settled in childcare, Ryan and I set up our mats and went through a 75 minute yoga flow class. Saturday morning classes rotate instructors and usually the classes are not much of a workout but the instructor on Saturday brought the heat! I’m grateful I was feeling energetic on Saturday morning because the class, which is usually more of a relaxing stretch class, was pretty darn challenging thanks to faster flows and more strength-based poses. Ryan said it was his favorite yoga class we’ve taken together to date!
After yoga, we picked up Chase and walked to the park for some playtime and snacks in the shade. By the time we made it home Chase was ready for his nap and while he slept, Ryan worked in the yard while I did some not-so-fun tax-related stuff for the blog.
Once Chase was up and we all ate a late lunch, we headed off on our big adventure of the day! A few weeks ago, Ryan noticed signs around town for the Loch Norman Highland Games, a local Scottish festival, and we figured it might make a fun family outing.
We arrived at Rural Hill (the local farm that’s also home to our favorite autumn corn maze!) and quickly realized the festival was a big deal! There were people of all ages dressed in beautiful costumes and, after speaking with some fellow attendees, we realized the games are a family reunion for many people.
Our trio had a great time walking around the festival, listening to live music and snacking on kettlecorn as we watched the Highland Games competition.
Over the course of the weekend, the athletes competing in the games went head-to-head in seven different events, including a hammer throw, weight throws and the sheaf toss, which was our favorite event to watch!
To compete in the sheaf toss, athletes had to use a pitchfork to throw a 20-pound burlap sack over a bar. We watched as the women cleared a 19-foot bar and it was seriously impressive!
Our time at the festival came to a close in the early evening when we figured we should head home to take Sadie on a walk before dinner. The rest of our evening included more playtime outside, an early dinner of burgers on the grill and Dateline on the couch after Chase went to bed. Nice and relaxing!
Sunday
Sunday morning began with church!
Ryan, Chase and I attended the early morning service after a quick breakfast of Paleo Blender Muffins and eggs and I absolutely loved the message.
We left church feeling uplifted and decided to run around town a bit before heading home. I wanted to pop into Aldi because I was recently talking with some of my girlfriends about improving our monthly food expenditures when my friend Jess (a serious super saver!) mentioned the fabulous prices of Aldi’s organic produce. I used to shop at Aldi quite frequently when we lived in Ocala because there was one very close to our house and Brittany recently told me that the Aldi in Mooresville got a makeover and was worth checking out!
Since we were already up that way for church, we popped in and the grocery store nerd in me freaked out a bit. The organic produce was significantly cheaper than organic produce at other stores and we left with a small assortment of organic veggies and other goods.
We swung by a local park for a brief bit of playtime before making our way back home for Chase’s nap. I think all of our morning adventures wore our little guy out because he took a great nap! Woop!
While Chase slept, Ryan snapped some pics for me for an upcoming workout post before he finished up his yard work from Saturday and I worked on yesterday’s shrimp dip blog post.
We reconvened when Chase was up again and spent the rest of our Sunday running errands before capping off the evening with a walk, some more park playtime and a bubble bath for Chase.
Once Chase was in bed, we cleaned up around the house, finished putting away laundry and did other necessary tasks to feel a little more ready for the week ahead before climbing into bed a little after 9 p.m.
Hope you guys had a great weekend and are enjoying the week so far! Thanks for stopping by the blog today!

Me too!!! Hoping to find more fun festivals to attend this spring and summer!

What a fun weekend! I love that Ryan will take yoga classes with you. My husband absolutely refuses but I know it’d make his body feel so much better!

Sounds like a fun weekend!! We love working out together at the Y on Saturday mornings! Such a great way to start the weekend!! We skipped it this week though and instead headed to Lake Norman to check out a few boats!! Woot! However, we just looked at boat stores which only carried new ones (unless we wanted to spring for a 26+ footer, ha). It was fun to get ideas though!
Hope you have a wonderful day!!

I love leaving church and feeling uplifted! What a fun weekend outdoors. The weather finally warmed up in Michigan, and we fully enjoyed time outside!

We are seriously obsessed with Aldi in our house! That’s where we go to grocery shop every single week and I can’t rave about it enough! Their meat and produce is so good, and SO cheap. At Publix (which I also love, but can definitely be pricey) we’d spend about $150+ per week for what we get at Aldi for $60! It’s done wonders for our grocery budget! 🙂
Julie says
The savings were seriously awesome! We will absolutely be back!!

I love Aldi and try to shop there weekly. You can’t beat their prices on organic items and the cheese selection is amazing! If you like Reisling Wine try the Landshut, it’s in a blue bottle and under $5!
Julie says
Ooooh! I’ll look for that wine! I love Reisling!

We love Aldi in Central New York. I am very lucky to have 2 stores close by. Have saved a ton of money by shopping there. I have even purchased jeggings from Aldi’s and love them.
Shannon says
I’m from CNY too & I completely agree!! Even with Wegmans, Aldi is so much more affordable!! Your dollar goes much further.
Allison says
This sounds like a perfect weekend. You always have the cutest outfits to run around town in! And we have a similar festival near me called the Renaissance Festival that I always thought was so fun to go to when I was younger – Chase will love those memories.

Sounds like a pretty perfect weekend to me! Lots of time outdoors! I wake up early every weekend. Around 5;30-6 and I love how it makes the days super long. I wake up at 4:45 every weekday so thats a sleep in for me!
Patricia @Sweet And Strong says
We’ve been loving the spring like warm and sunny weather too! And that festival sounds so fun. I wish our community had more events like that to bring people together.
Aimee says
What fun! I love those type of festivals because you can usually find some amazing food that you wouldn’t normally eat.
Kelli @ Hungry Hobby says
Your weekend photo pictures always look so crystal clear! are you using your phone or something else????

You have the best half-up top knot! I love the look, but somehow I tend to look like Orlando Bloom in Lord of the Rings. hahaha.
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I went to a highland games as a kid and had so much fun. Like you said, it was pretty cool to see the competitions – I think my favorite was the caber toss.
Bethany says
We are big Aldi fans over here too! I love their organic selections and I recently learned they’ve banned artificial colors, growth hormones, preservatives, and hydrogenated oils from all their products. Win, win.
Looks like you all had a fun weekend, I love finding different local festivals to attend! Have a fantastic Tuesday, Julie!
Julie says
Really!? That’s awesome! I didn’t know that!!
Danielle says
That Scottish festival sounds like something my Irish/Scottish hubby would love!! I’m sure I was a nice, rowdy affair!

We cut our grocery budget in half by limiting ourselves to Costco once per month and Aldi on a weekly basis. I moved to Florida from Pennsylvania (love Wegmans!), and I still don’t understand the cult following of Publix. It is very expensive (rivals Whole Foods) and just a “normal” grocery store to me. I do like that they treat their employees so well, though!
Our favorite Aldi finds are the organic produce, organic milk and eggs, and their not-so-secret Sabra hummus (the olive tapenade is divine!).
Julie says
I need to check out a wholesale grocer! I have a feeling that could really help with our food budget! I just wish there was one closer to me… but if you only go once a month, that sounds worth the trip!
Jess says
Yes, I would highly recommend a wholesaler. It’s just my husband and I, but we buy all of our paper products, frozen fruit for smoothies (much more affordable than grocery), organic fruits and veggies that we eat in high volume (like spinach and long-lasting carrots), greek yogurt, coffee, Lara bars, and several more items. We have found that limiting ourselves to once a month prevents us from going over budget–you can always find something cool to try, and that can get pricey!

i haven’t been to aldi yet but i’m dying to! i heard it’s amazing!
your weekend looked so beautiful – love that you guys really take advantage of being outdoors and finding local events to go to. i need to do more of that myself. have a great week 🙂
tracy says
How do you get your half top knot so cute? My hair is long and fine like yours and always seem to look too floppy. Help!
Julie says
hi tracy!! i usually just do the same sloppy bun i do when i pull all of my hair up but if it’s too floppy looking, i’ll sometimes use tiny clear clips to poof it back up a bit! i just make sure they’re hidden in my hair after they give the top bun a little more of a lift! 🙂

I wish that food store was closer to me! For just two people I am spending around $120/week!!! I have tried everything to cut it down but cant!

Hi Julie! Super cute pics from the weekend — love the selfie of you three. And I’ve never been to an Aldi either — I don’t think we have one near us, so I go to TJ’s for my cheaper produce, but man, buying lots of good-for-you food is super expensive basically no matter what. 75 minutes of yoga is no joke, by the way! So cool you’re loving that addition to your routine. Good for the body and mind. 🙂 Happy Tuesday!
Kaci says
What tights are you wearing in the last picture? They look super cute!
I’m jealous of the Aldi trip. I keep hearing great things, but there are none in my area 🙁
Julie says
They’re Fabletics! 🙂
Julia @ Drops of Jules says
How do you feel about a 75 minute yoga class? I’ve only taken 50 minute classes before, but my gym offers a 75 minute one. I always worry that I’ll be left feeling bored, but whenever I’m in my fifty minute one, I feel confident I could go longer. I was wondering if you felt the additional 25 minutes lagged at all. Thank you for your thoughts! 🙂
Bethany says
I totally need to try Yoga
Melissa says
I agree with you about Aldi – I l;ove that their produce is always significantly cheaper in comparison to other stores! Especially with a lot of their bagged salad mixes and spinach; they are completely fresh and at least a $1 or more cheaper. They always have a vast array of produce to choose from, also. About two weeks ago, I was able to get an entire 3 lb bag of Pink Lady apples for $1.99!
Kim from MN says
These weekend recaps are always a fave – sounds like such a fun weekend! When you mentioned the Highland games, I hadn’t scrolled all the way down past the pic of Ryan holding Chase, and for one, flickering second, I was expecting to maybe see Ryan in a kilt! lol Great to see them in the background, though. Me and my husband went to the big Swedish Institute in Mpls. this past weekend, and even though we’re not Swedish (much of the state is), we thought it was really fun to see all the great traditions. Sounds like you had a lot of fun watching the Scottish traditions! (I am part Scottish but have yet to see many of the Highland games in person). Great to experience stuff like this.
I love Aldi’s! Will be going there myself tomorrow (I guess, today by the time you read this, if you see it). I’ll be literally right across the street from one for a meeting (that’s one of the bonuses of those meetings!) Anyhow, I love their produce. Once, my husband stunned me by bringing home a whole quart of organic strawberries from Aldi’s for….wait for it……99 cents! OMG! I know. I mean, this was in peak strawberry season, so that makes sense, but still, organic strawberries for 99 cents? Holy strawberries.
Great recap as always!
