Eek!
This morning I checked my second-to-last five mile run off my training plan list.
One five mile run down, one to go… Then it’s race day!
I think it’s interesting that my pace during my 10 mile run on Saturday was actually faster than the run I did with Sadie this morning that was half the distance. My quads felt a little sore and I kind of zoned out on this run and actually told myself to slow down and enjoy the run, so maybe that had something to do with it?
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, because pace-wise my 5k times are often a bit slower than my 10k times. I think that once I get in the running groove, I can keep going, but I struggle to get into a comfortable stride until about 3 miles in. Funky monkey.
On to breakfast!
Breakfast
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…
I prepped a good portion of my breakfast last night when I cooked up some oatmeal to refrigerate overnight. When the oatmeal was still hot, I added a handful of frozen strawberries to the oats so they could thaw and disperse their glorious flavor into the oats as they cooled.
This morning, I added a cup of Greek yogurt to the chilled strawberry oats and dusted the oatty yogurt bowl with ground flax seeds for some omega-3s.
I loved how the strawberry flavor really infused into the oats and made this whole bowl taste summery and sweet.
I know many of you out there swear by overnight oats, but this combo takes the cake for me. The texture of this breakfast bowl rocks my socks, while overnight oats kinda start to gross me out as I get toward the end of the bowl. With this concoction, I want the bowl to automatically refill as I approach the end. 😀
Question of the Morning
Are you better at running short or long distances… Or no distances at all? 😉
Jessica @ How Sweet says
I’m better at not running…at all. 🙂
Courtney says
That bowl looks SO GOOD – almost like a berry cobbler dessert! YUM! 😛
Janna's Keeping it Real! says
Longer. For sure longer. It takes a good 3or so miles for me to get in the groove!
Those oats look to die for! Yum!
Meg says
Kudos to you for running 🙂 I am NOT a fan, haha! But maybe on day. I love biking, though, and swimming! I hope you’re excited to rock that race – cause you know you will! And you’ve got all of us and your fam to cheer you on!
Breakfast looks amazing – summer is PERFECT for cold oats! Bonus points if it tastes like cake 😉

Once I get going, I am better at long runs. It takes me a few miles get my stride going. I just have to keep that in mind as my legs SLOOOOWLYY warm up. 😉

long distances are better for me
coffeeismycarrot says
I’m with ya on the longer distances are faster. I am totally behing your theory on gettin in the groove.
Kelly says
I totally agree that cold oats are awesome!!! I am going to try your breakfast bowl this week!
atastelife says
I’m going to be honest – I’m not a runner. Put me in a spin class or sculpt, let me strength train or elliptical all day long. Running just “ain’t my thang.”
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i’m probably “better” at running longer distances…although i’m having to work slowly up to it from shorter ones 🙂
Shannon says
I’ve never run more than 6 miles, and that’s not that much compared to you and lots of other runners. 😉 But I suppose I’m just “used” to running shorter distances. I still get the health benefit, blood flowing, and endorphins..and I don’t hurt my knees. Although I’d love to run a half-marathon someday or a 10K.
pursuitofhealthfulness says
I have come to the conclusion that 10Ks are my ideal distances. I really enjoy them more than 5Ks… and I’ll update you on what I think about half marathons come this October!
Those oats looks really delicious. I’m not actually a big fan of hot-hot oats, so making the night before is pretty ingenious!
sarah says
long distances, for sure. i get into a groove and can just keeping going. i’ve never been one of those speed demons. 🙂
lisaou11 says
No distance for me! haha, but if I had to choose, I’d say short since I’ve never really run long distances!
The Hot and Fit says
I haven’t tried cold oats yet this summer!! I might try tomorrow morning!!
I am an avid runner but I honestly cannot say what I am better at. Probably long distances though. My body kind of just gets into it…
Jacqueline says
Longer distances for sure. Like you, I usually don’t get into my groove until mile 3 or so but when I do, I can go forever. I’m not super fast, but I’m consistent.
katie says
jw, how does the texture of those differ from overnight? never had either:-P
Brittany says
I really enjoy cold oats too – especially in the summer! They’re super easy to prepare and great to grab right before work.
I like to run longer distances as well. I tend to get in my zone around mile 2!
Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous says
I wish I could call myself a runner but I’m definitely not. I’m much better at short bursts of running – that’s why I played tennis in high school.
Amy @Vitamin Amy says
Currently, I am covering no distance :(. I have tried a few times but have always ended up with sore arches and tight calves. Did you experience this when you first started running and how did you overcome it? I’ve always stretched a lot before and after but maybe it’s something I just have to work through. Thanks! 🙂
Kat @ My Fruity Life says
Those oats are so pretty. 🙂
I haven’t been running for a long time so the most I do at one time is about 2 1/2 mi. I’m usually exhausted at the end and ready to quit. But my hubby just started joining me on my runs so I’m hoping we can motivate each other to really do longer ones. I need all the tips I can get!
Tracy says
Just wanted to let you know that I made your funfetti cookie recipe this past weekend. I took the cookies to a picnic and they were a huge hit! Thanks so much for the idea!! And as far as the running distance, definitely shorter…that way I can fit some weights in the equation, too.
Ilene says
Definitely shorter! Though I’m starting to run longer distances lately to work on my endurance 🙂
Kelly says
I’m like you, it takes me a good 3 miles to get into a run, then every mile after that flies by! You should meet up with Amy of Second City Randomness http://secondcityrandomness.wordpress.com/? She lives in Chicago and is running the half also!
Jamie says
Just like you! Yesterday I didn’t hit my stride until 3.5 miles into my run. The first few were slow and heavy feeling but I did the same thing and said, just enjoy this run!
Good luck in the half, you’re going to rock it!
Lizzy @LBBakes says
I am definitely a long distance runner. My parents were both marathon runners, so I blame them. 🙂 But I have to admit, there’s nothing like a runner’s high after a loooong run!
Mmmm, I need to make some oats tonight! They’re like a bowl of dessert for bfast 🙂
angie says
I am definitely better at running longer distances
lowandbhold says
I think I’m better at long distances if I run at a slower pace. Right now I’m just starting my new round of training and they’ve all been a bit tough!
I love the cooling off cooked yogurt. I bet I’d like that way better than overnight oats.
Lacey says
hello!!! i’ve been a reader for awhile now, but haven’t commented yet 🙂 i thought i would say hi! i adore your blog- your positivity, enthusiasm, easy-to-read + fun posts. and of course your dog 🙂 i am a dog-lover through + through. i also had to say i also LOVE cold oatmeal and do the exact same thing (frozen fruits). i even go the extra mile and stick it in the fridge/freezer so it gets really cold + then i add cottage cheese. cottage cheese is a DELISH addition to oatmeal if you are interested. 🙂 happy tuesday!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I definitely find it easier to keep up a pace for longer distances! 6 miles is my optimal distance- long enough to get in a groove, but not so long that I burn out. You’ll rock the half this weekend!
overweighted says
I do not consider myself to be good at either one. However I do find it takes me at least 2 miles to get into a groove. I am doing my first half marathon in Septermber! I am slow but I am determined.
Erika says
Well I am trying to get into running since I will be on the freshman track team this year. If I had to guess I would be better at running short distances – but who knows maybe my stamina will improve and I will be able to do cross-country. ;-D
Erica says
I used to think long distances until I PR’ed 2 weeks ago in a 5K with a time I never thought I’d hit! However, I’m like you in that I do get into a nice little pace zone in longer distances and am usually pretty happy with the outcome. Good luck in your half marathon – have fun!
Holly at Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices says
Love the comment ‘so they could disperse their glorious flavor’ 🙂 You are the ideal editor- always the perfect words- I love it 😀
I am better at long distances, honestly, the longer the better.
trailmomma says
Okay, my turn to thank YOU!!! For the past two days, I have added Sugar Free Pistachio pudding mix to my plain yogurt and oh my goodness is that not the best thing in the world!!!???? I swear I am in heaven when I eat it and it makes me sooooooooooo happy!
Thank you thank you thank you!
Great job on your run this morning! You’ll do awesome in Chicago.
Katie@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle says
Yes yes, I a gree with you- it is tough to get into my running groove on a 3 miler. It takes around 3 till my mind stops arguing with my body and I can hit a steady pace without really trying.
runeatplay says
I think that I am better at short runs. My husband and I are doing the muddy buddy in Chicago on august 1st – the same day as the half marathon. The muddy buddy is so fun – it’s running & biking & a giant mud pit!
erinsloves says
I am definately better at NO long distance running at all! It seems no matter how hard I work at it, I just can’t get in the groove and run more than a mile ):
kristyn says
holy yum that breakfast bowl looks so good!
how long do you keep the oatmeal in the refrigerator?
i am so going to try this! thanks 🙂
Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA says
I am DEF a better long distance runner! My PRs for pace were during a half marathon and when I qualified for Boston. Sprinting (although so important for speed work) isn’t my thang and I need to MAKE myself do it!
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
I am not a fan of overnight oats either. If I lived in Florida, I may want to try cold oatmeal, but it’s too darn cold here for that!
Amber K says
I’m not good at running in general, but I love reading bloggers who do. It really inspires me to keep trying!
April says
I’ve got to get me one of those stop watch things you’re wearing!

My 10k paces are always faster than my 5k paces! I thought I was the only one!
Haleigh says
I am a huge fan of cold oatmeal with yogurt in the summer time… pair it with some seasonal fruit and it is just about my favorite breakfast 🙂 I am not much of a runner but I like to go swimming and biking. Swimming=short distances and biking=longer distances. Hope you have a good day girl! xoxo
modernation says
I am the same way in that long runs often feel easier to me. It takes me a couple miles to get in the groove, so I just start to hit my stride by the end of a 5K. Longer runs get easier after the first few miles.
beth says
Long distance is much easier! i’m slow, but i can endure!. i’ve really been missing long runs this summer with injury. can’t wait to get back in the groove and tackle another marathon!
and I can’ wait to find a rutabaga to try those fries!
