At lunchtime today I finally tried naan!
For those of you not in the know about naan (like me as of two days ago), it is a leavened, oven-baked flatbread that basically rocked my taste buds!
I’ve seen naan for sale at the grocery store forever, but always passed it up because it looked somewhat dry and flavorless to me.
I finally tried naan thanks to some samples I received from the kind people at Stonefire and fell in love.
It was doughy. Smoky. Flavorful. Airy. Delicious!
Honestly, it was even fun to eat! I felt like a two-year-old, as I picked off the "bubbly" pieces of the naan to eat first. (I do this with pizza, too.)
I had plans to use the naan to make a cheesy pizza of sorts, but once I tasted it, I just wanted to gobble it up and ate it with a side of hummus for dipping.
I ate Stonefire’s whole grain tandoori naan and loved that it was packed with protein and fiber.
Ten grams of protein and eight grams of fiber in one naan! Sweet!
I already have a breakfast idea for naan swimming around in my brain.
Room Update
I finally started reading Room, the book we all selected for the PBF Book Club, last night and it’s pretty interesting. I’m not very far at all, but I want to discuss it with you guys already! I suppose we must wait until October 3 – the official “discussion date” – but I’m antsy! Who is this “Old Nick” guy!? (<— Don’t answer that.)
The Sing Off
Moving right along…
I am in love with Straight No Chaser, an a cappella group that originated at Indiana University (any IU readers out there?), and can’t get enough of a cappella music in general, so I am super pumped that the new season of The Sing Off premiered last night!
(Please go listen to Straight No Chaser’s version of the 12 Days of Christmas if you’ve never listened to it before. Phenomenal!)
I basically listen to every a cappella song out there with my mouth open and love watching the different a cappella groups compete and perform songs from all different genres on The Sing Off.
I have been listening to this song performed by The YellowJackets last night on The Sing Off all day today (fast forward to 2:06 for the beginning of the song).
It’s such a happy and fun song!
Great music for powering through your daily to-do list!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
fix you by straight no chaser is my FAVORITE song ever since you introduced me to it!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
ooooh that song gives me goosebumps!
Pamela @ Girl Gone West says
One of my best friend’s brothers is in The Yellow Jackets – so glad you liked them! And not sure if it’s everywhere, but I had a cherry stuffed naan dish recently at a local Indian place that I CANNOT get out of my head. Seriously the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted!
Lauren says
My favorite Publix Apron’s recipe is Naan Pizza. Take the naan, smother it in hummus, add any sort of veggies you like (zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, spinach, artichoke hearts, sweet potatoes, really anything) Add some herbs, salt and pepper to season it and throw some cheese on top. I like Naan Pizza more than real pizza.
Colleen @ Jimmy Choos on the Treadmill says
Though I love the store-bought naan, nothing beats the authentic, hot-out-of-the-oven kind that I’ve had! In Iran (I’m half Persian), almost everyone goes to a bakery everyone morning to buy fresh naan. It is sooo good and doughy!
Jamie in Arkansas says
Too bad the Naan is made with enriched wheat flour. Why can’t these companies and restaurants (hello, Subway) offer REAL 100% WHOLE WHEAT??! It’s so frustrating. You’re thoughts?
Michele Sparrow says
My 15 year old son absolutely LOVES Straight No Chaser! I hadn’t heard of them until he showed me and they are so much fun. I really enjoy watching them perform!
Lindsay @ biking before bed says
Oh my goodness I am a daware alumni too and just found out about the deltones today! I literally went to every performance while I was there. One of the alumni who is performing on the show lived in my dorm:)
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I’ve heard that an a capella group from my alma mater (Delaware) is going to be on that show… the Deltones!
Tori says
I started reading “Room” last night also! Although it is different, I am intrigued! I’m excited to continue reading tonight:) Can’t wait for the discussion… I feel like such a nerd 😉
Melissa says
Naan with Indian food is to DIE for! I love using it as a dipper! If you get it in a restaurant, they’ll stuff it with different things, like garlic and herbs or veggies. So insanely good!
dee says
I also love acapella! 🙂 I was the high school kid that secretly rocked out to acapella verisions of “walk like an egyptian” and “basketcase” at home. The Sing Off was definitely fun to watch 🙂 I seriously ooh’d and ahh’d at the crazy harmony and “unisons” 🙂 don’t forget to tune in for glee and the new girl tonight! Oh, and garlic naan is also verrrry tasty..mmm..sidebar: I’m also mm-ing at the small of nutella granola baking in my oven right now! So excited!! Next batch in: peanut butter granola 😉
Allison says
I LOVED that song by the yellowjackets last night! The story of them traveling to Kenya and listening to that song just gave me chills last night! I have been listening to that song a lot today as well! Great minds think a like!
Nathan Miller says
Good find on the Naan! We get it every time we go to the small little Indian place down in the village here in Indy…but as for Indiana…Go HOOSIERS and big ups to Straight No Chaser! Got my degree from the IU Kelley School and love some straight no chaser…speaking of. The fiance also loves the 12 days of Christmas…so guess what…yep they are playing downtown Indy two weeks before Christmas this year, and this guy get her some lower level tickets for the show, she has no idea, but I did tell her to mark the date and just told her it was a special date night.
K says
I’ll be at that concert too! 🙂
Nathan Miller says
Right on! Im pretty stoked, and shes going to be really stoked. Supper at the Rathskeller across the street then a classic Christmas concert to really get you in the Christmas spirit!
Megan @ On the Road Again says
Naan is tasty, and so is Straight No Chaser! 🙂
I totally missed The Sing-Off last night, so I was happy to see and listen to the video you posted. The Yellow Jackets sound amazing. I’m always so intrigued by acapella – I can’t believe they make all of the sounds with their own voices!
River says
Wow, I can’t believe you’ve never tried naan before!
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Ahh so glad you are now a Naan lover! I’ve actually never had it at home but I *have* to have it when I go to Indian restaurants… especially garlic naan… yum! And ohh I’ll have to give that song a listen!
claire says
Ah OLD NICK! I won’t answer…you have lots waiting for you in that bookie, lady! I am still not done. I actually MAY have time to finish it either tonight or tomorrow so I’m looking forward to that!
Naan? What the heck is that stuff? It looks doughy and delicious, I don’t doubt it is 🙂
Amy at TheSceneFromMe says
Naan bread is great! I love to brush it with a little garlic butter and eat it with pasta. I’ve also used it as pizza crust, yum!
I just finished watching my dvr’d show of THE SING OFF. I love Delilah and Urban Method 🙂
And my hometown is next to Bloomington, where IU is. That’s my husband’s alma mater. Great town!
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
Oh my gosh. I am a total a capella groupie…no joke. I may or may not have a Straight No Chaser radio station on Pandora. One of my coworkers saw them in Atlantic City a few weekends ago, and she said they’re fantastic live!!
I’m so glad someone else appreciates the glory of the a capella. 😉
Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups says
I love Straight No Chaser too! I lived in Indiana for 8 year but went to college in Florida.
Laura says
My favorite by straight no chaser is “man who can’t be moved.” it literally gives me the chills!
Anna @ Food Fitness and Frolicking says
I discover naan bread a few years back and I’m HOOKED. I love making naan pizzas, gyro wraps, pb and honey sandwhiches, and more with naan!
I’m curious to hear about your breakfast idea..hhmmm.
Shanna says
I’m not sure if you have a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods near you, but they sell an amazing spinach naan! Omg – that with hummus and tomatoes is the best snack! Also, if you really like a cappella, I’d definitely suggest that you listen to Fleet Street – an all-male a cappella group from Stanford that is AMAZING! They were my favorite campus group because they’re super talented, but also hilarious.
Here is one of their most famous songs:

Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Clever title! 😉 I suppose you answered my question in regards to my tweet to you earlier too because I had no idea what naan was before I read this. Definitely need to try this out! I always pick off the “bubbly” pieces of my pizza crust before I eat the rest of it too!
peanutbutterfingers says
the bubbly pieces are the best!
Caitlin says
So I walked into Vitamin Shoppe today and was overwhelmed with the different kinds of whey protein powder out there. I know you said you like “All the Whey” but I don’t think we have that out in LA….was curious what other kinds you like or what you look for? Also bought chia seeds!
peanutbutterfingers says
i like optimum nutrition protein powder too!
Caitlin says
Thank you! Tried making one tonight for the first time. Had some ice chunks in it….I just have a Cuisinart 7-speed. Hopefully will get better as it as I keep making them.
LeeAnn says
i have about 40ish pages left in Room. It is interesting to say the least!
Tracey says
I love naan! Also, I’ve been waiting for a few comments on Room. Holy cow, this book is crazy! I haven’t been able to put it down and the first 100 pages had me thinking, “what the hell??” the whole time!
Erin says
I read Room on Saturday, and it is interesting but very disturbing….
Tara says
I love naan! An Indian woman at work introduced me to it a few years ago, so many possibilities. And I love Straight No Chaser! If you haven’t seen them in concert, it’s a must! They have so much fun up there on stage, last year they did a Lady Gaga mash-up that included some sweet dance moves, youtube it. It’s so funny! I’m going again in a few weeks, can’t wait to see what they have in store for this tour
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
Oh my gosh – I LOVE naan, it is mouth wateringly delicious, but normally so not good for you – but a wholegrain versions sounds incredible! <3 Yummay, lol! Pass me a plateful! 😛 xyx
vanessa says
It does look tasty but oh my goodness is it packed with sodium too! 400 mg and the seving is 1/2 a naan, are they serious?
Kristin says
A tuna melt made on a garlic naan is next level!
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
I love Straight No Chasers! I went to Butler which is a small Private University in Indiana. I saw Straight No Chasers when I want to Indiana University for their little 500 festival! They are amazing! Butler had an a cappella group called Out of the Dawg House, they are pretty good too!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I LOVE naan! Although last time I had it was at an all you can eat Indian buffet and I kind of went a little crazy and ended up getting a stomach ache so I’ve been a little nervous to have it again. Its nice to see you enjoying it in moderation!
Also, this past Saturday I made your banana protein pancakes for my boyfriend for breakfast and ended up blogging about them. I was wondering if you could check out the post to make sure I linked back to your blog okay and gave you credit properly? I’m pretty new to blogging and want to make sure not to step on any bloggers toes or do things the wrong way. Thanks so much!

Naan makes an AMAZING pizza crust! A nice individual pizza size ( I do not care that it says serving size 1/2 naan…I eat it all :). )

Naan is possibly one of my favorite foods. When I go out for Indian, I could easily demolish an entire basket of it. Yum.

I really love using naan for mini pizzas. It holds the sauce and cheese really well! 🙂

Try peshwari naan- it has coconut, almonds and sultanas inside. So good! They sell it in the supermarkets in England but its best when its made fresh in the restaurant

Also I went to Ball State! Not IU but same state 😀

I’ve never had naan before.. but I know for sure that I would pick at it just like you did. I am a big picker!
Tiffany says
I watched The Sing Off for the first time last night – I loved it! I’ve always enjoyed A Cappella music, so I truly enjoyed watching the different groups perform on this competition.
I read “Room” over the summer. This is a book that will linger in your mind long after you’ve finished it. As difficult as it was to read through some of the plot lines, I could not put it down. It’s riveting, poignant, heart-wrenching. I think it even moved me to tears at some points.
Cannot wait for your post about this book in October!
lisa @ tequila cupcakes says
Naan is delicious!! However garlic naan is to die for!
Just think of naan as an amazing preview to Indian food… it’s so yummy!

You should try naan pizza! (Or as I fondly call it — naanza.) I’ve made it a few times before, and it never fails to please.
