A little glimpse into our marriage…
The other day a package was delivered to our house. When Ryan asked what it was, I told him it was his anniversary present and that it fit the “paper theme” associated with one-year wedding anniversaries.
(Confession: The gift was meant to be a birthday present and it just arrived late. Since it is a mushy gushy gift, I figured it was actually more applicable for our wedding anniversary and can’t wait to give it to him at the end of the month!)
Of course Ryan had no idea there was a paper theme associated with one-year wedding anniversaries. (I don’t blame him – I only learned about it after we were married myself.) He asked me to give him a head’s up about the themed gifts for each wedding anniversary, so that’s what that email (and his incredibly loving and romantic response) is all about.
He’s a keeper.
Lunch
Lunch today was a party in my mouth thanks to the best hummus I’ve ever had in my life. Really!
The kind people at Tribe Hummus sent me a bunch of their different hummus flavors to try today and I immediately dug into the cilantro chimichurri flavor – fingers first!
I find regular hummus rather bland and thoroughly enjoyed the kick of flavor that the cilantro and chimichurri provided. Plus, the hummus is completely natural with 100 percent recognizable ingredients which is an added bonus.
I used the super smooth hummus as a delicious base on my lunchtime bagelwich that included romaine lettuce, tomato and avocado slices.
I actually took the time to roast cauliflower for lunch today and totally forgot about it in the oven after I went back to work on my computer.
The smell from the oven reminded me about the roasting veggie and I managed to save a few of the florets.
Served with a side of sparkling water plus fresh mint!
I planted the mint in the same pot with my thriving basil plant and the two herbs have a beautiful and healthy relationship.
I am honestly shocked my black thumb hasn’t killed them both yet.
I better not jinx it!
Danielle says
Aw 🙂 that is such an adorable email exchange. I hope to find a keeper of my own someday!
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
Am I the only one wondering what he’ll request for year 3?
peanutbutterfingers says
Or year five…
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
BAHAHAHAHA. Thankfully, there is a huge meeting today and nobody is in my office to hear me laugh.
Sara says
I sent a picture of that email to my husband. In my email, I definitely made a comment about Year Five. Ha ha ha ha ha. (We just had our Paper Year hit in September, and I had no clue that such a thing even existed!) Like always, thanks for the fun read today!
Ally@GirlVFood says
That took me a few seconds to ‘get’…and now I’m DYING.
Khushboo says
Ha ha spoken like a true male…his response is so something my bro in law would say! Love your lunch, my absolute fave sandwich combo: turkey, hummus & avo!
Lindsey says
Cilantro hummus!? Yumm!!
So funny, on our first Anniversary my Grandma gave us a whole bunch of toilet paper and me and my husband were sitting there after we unwrapped it looking at each other thinking “this is it, she has really lost it…” – we had to idea of the “paper” for our first anniversary either! It wasn’t till I told my Mom she explained it all to me! haha
Shannon @ Healthiful Balance says
Your lunch looks good! 🙂
krista says
We’ve never gone by the anniversary ‘rules’, I find it silly! But I’m so not a traditionalist, I didn’t even have a wedding either. 🙂 In fact I absolutely hate weddings and am dreading having to go to one next weekend, haha. But I do love and adore my husband, even after 10 years of marriage, one toddler, and another on the way! Wouldn’t have it any other way!
Shari @ The Daily Dish says
Wow. That hummus looks amazing! Thanks for sharing. I will have to check it out.
Caroline@risenrunning@wordpress.com says
16 years married and looking forward to 50 plus! wishing the same for you 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
congratulations to you both!! 🙂
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I knew that there were different things associated with years of marriage, but I couldn’t tell you what the order is! Paper sounds like it could be fun… you could interpret it as a trip to Vegas to win some paper $$$ maybe? 😉
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
I think our husbands would totally get along because I anticipate the same reaction from mine next April.
I love hummuses (sp?) that have an added kick. My current favorite is Chipotle Hummus from Sabra. The Tribe one looks great too with all that green loveliness. Yum!
Kim @ The Family Practice says
That hummus looks delicious! Cilantro makes everything better 🙂
Adriane (the greenhorn) says
The gift e-mail is hilarious! I’m glad you had fun with it.
I like events together as gifts better than “stuff” (I’ll take stuff thought, too, heehee) so for our first anniversary (paper), we went to Vegas and lost all our money, LOL.
For our second (cotton), we stayed at a B&B in Savannah, Georgia!
I’m still contemplating what to do next year…dude ranch??? 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
ha! i would love that!
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
random, but coffee grounds make basil grow better. Just take them after you’ve brewed your coffee and they’re cool, and scatter them at the base of your plant.
peanutbutterfingers says
awesome! thanks for the tip. is it okay if they’re flavored?
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
nope. that’s fine.
Jamie @ FoodinRealLife says
That hummus looks great and so does your sandwich! The level of done-ness on your cauliflower looks perfect to me. My veggies aren’t roasted enough if there isn’t some major brownness going on!
Krystina (Organically Me) says
Hahaha, men. 😀
Hillary says
I’m so happy that I’m not the only one who has convos like this with my significant other via email. I saw this thing on Pinterest the other day (obvi) that said: It takes true lovers to be silly. True story!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Haha – love it! Happy Anniversary at the end of the month. 🙂 My husband and I just shared our first anniversary this past Sunday! It was crazy to think how quickly this past year has gone by!
Also, that cilantro hummus look and sounds amazing!! I need to find me some of that stuff! I usually love the different flavored hummuses.
Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews says
Haha too funny! And cute!
Lena @ Fit on the Rocks says
I’m so jealous that it’s warm enough there to grow basil! I didn’t start to like it until the last couple of months, and now I want it in everything!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Exactly the type of thing that my new husband would know nothing about!
Brittany *Sparkles* says
Yummy roasted veggieS!!! I wish I could go home for lunch just to have that haha and that new hummus flavor looks amazing!
Brandy @ Let's Grab a Coffee says
Did Tribe send you roasted red pepper flavored?? I would eat it on anything…veggies…pita chips…my socks…
It’s just that good.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
yes!! can’t wait to try it!
Mari says
I recently made Angela’s roasted red pepper hummus and it’s amazing!

peanutbutterfingers says
yum! thanks for the link, mari!
Brittany @ Healthy Slice says
Tribe or Sabra… Which is better? I think Sabra puts crack in their hummus because I can’t ever get enough, but its so expensive that I’d love to find another brand I like as much!
Lisa@ChocolatePBCups says
^^ haha I LOL’ed at Brittany’s comment above and actually couldn’t agree more about the Sabra hummus! It’s even more dangerous when you pair it with Stacy’s pita chips!
And that email exchange was pretty funny 🙂 and at least now the gift being late just worked out for the better. I can’t believe you guys have been married almost a year already!
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
I have seen that hummus on other blogs and have been wanting to try it!
Annie says
Just a heads up that your mint may choke out your basil… mint grows like a weed (you wouldn’t want to plant it in the ground unless you had a weed barrier around it, because it can take over entire gardens) so you may want to consider keeping them in separate pots! It looks like your basil has a pretty decent head start, though, so they may be fine!
RunEatRepeat says
I normally only eat Sabra, but that flavor has me intrigued!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
That hummus looks delicious! Haha and kudos on the roasting. I roasted butternut squash in the oven today! It actually went a lot faster than I thought!
Jamie says
I’m seriousley jealous that you already have your 1 year anniversary gift taken care of. Mine is 10/23 and I still don’t know what to get my husband! Everythign I come accross is super mushy and just doesn’t feel like something he would like…
Hope says
Such a cute convo! 🙂 I can’t believe you’ve been married for almost a year already! Time goes by so quick!
That cilantro hummus sounds incredible! I am a fan of Tribe hummus. I cannot wait to find it in the supermarket!
Melanie says
I really hate that themed gift thing. Of course, marriage really makes no sense to me, either, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I say, get each other (and your married friends) what you want or what they need/asked for.
Ruthie Hart says
yall are adorable! I think you should blog more about you and ryan and your marriage, I know us readers would love it!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Aww I hope you guys have a wonderful anniversary! I wonder who came up with that list of yearly presents back in the day? Wood, what are you supposed to do with that? Josh and Is one year (dating) anniversary is in less than a month, Im happy to know his gift fits the paper theme well! I got him a coffee table photo book from mixbook documenting our first year together! Im so excited to give it to him!
Nancy @ Beyoutiful Fitstyle says
Are those themes like a traditional thing to do? I’ve never heard of it before. I’m also not married, ha.
Nicole says
There is actually a “new” list of anniversary gifts out there as well. More updated. For our first anniversary I got tickets (the paper theme) to a NASCAR race. Martinsville. It was thrilling.
How do I get Sabra to send me free schwag????
The Kidless Kronicles
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
hehe you guys are cute~
If I remember, Tribe was pretty good, and Sabra is my fave!! have you tried Sabra pinenut? : DDD Chimichurri sounds amazing though~I grew up eating it and I love it.
Kerry @ Half Healthy, Half Nuts says
I LOVE Chimichurri, so I will definitely be trying this hummus. I’m not even a huge hummus fan, but I want to try this. Thanks for sharing.
And my second wedding anniversary is coming up at the end of the month, and I had no idea “cotton” was the theme. Good to know. Thanks! 🙂
Ali says
Wait-what was the present??
peanutbutterfingers says
can’t reveal it yet! he hasn’t opened it – not til oct. 30.
Marie says
Haha, love the e-mail exchange. 😉 The hummus sounds great. We’ve been loving the Sabra Spinach & Artichoke hummus lately. My kids will eat anything mixed with that so we make them egg-salad, chicken salad, etc. using hummus instead of mayonnaise. BTW, just sent you an e-mail with some before/after pics of my plant. 😉 Pretty sure I have the worst black thumb of all time! 😉
Lauren says
That hummus looks amazing! I have to find it.
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
Oh that is so something Peter would say! LOL
That flavor hummus sounds so good.
Ali @ Ali Runs says
Haaha love the e-mails! I would want money on my first anniversary too! 😉
Cait's Plate says
HAHAHA! That email exchange literally made me laugh out loud. Love it.
And that hummus looks amazing. I thought it was pesto at first (hint hint Tribe – pesto hummus would be amazing!!) but I bet that was delicious as well. I actually had Tribe Hummus for lunch myself!
Sasha says
Have you tried the Caramelized Onion Hummus by the same brand!? It is SO good and hands down my favorite hummus out there. Tastes like chip dip, only way better and healthier. I haven’t come across the cilantro one yet!
peanutbutterfingers says
no! i need to!!
Alaina says
You and your husband are very cute. 🙂 For one year, I gave my husband a scrapbook of our relationship/wedding/trash the dress session (paper) and last year we went to Atlantic City. Maybe the sheets are the cotton? Haha.
That hummus looks so good! I love cilantro.
Corrie Anne says
Husbands are the best!!
I want that hummus and those vegetables!!
Danica @ It's Progression Not Perfection says
that conversation made me laugh : )

haha Ryan’s response is so funny! typical guy, but hey can’t complain with large bills 😉
chimichurri hummus sounds delightful!
Electra @ Vanilla Bean Lean says
I LOVE those emails. I love the humor, and that you can joke around with eachother – keeps things fun 🙂
Can’t wait to see what the present is later this month!
And those cauliflower look perfect – I like my roasted veggies crispy!!

I have 10 months to think of a good paper gift!
