No matter how much I plan and accomplish ahead of time, the day before vacation is always a little hectic. Things always seem to pop up out of nowhere. Like round two of fingerprinting for my new job!
Apparently the piece of paper with my fingerprints that I previously submitted was misplaced, so I got to visit my friends at the police department again today. We’re just anxious to get my background check done while I am away, so I can officially begin working when I return. (I’ve been shadowing and training up until now.)
Other than that, I’ve been tying up loose ends on some other projects and working on a few blog posts for you guys while I’m away. I hope to have access to the internet randomly, but since that cannot be guaranteed, I want to have a few things planned. Some fun guest posts and giveaways are also headed your way!
After my time at the police station, I popped into the library to pick up a few books to bring along on our trip. The winning book for the PBF May Book Club is If I Stay by Gayle Forman!
We’ll be discussing it on the blog on June 7!
Unfortunately that book was checked out, so I picked up a different book club contender, The Gargoyle, since so many of you raved about it.
And a little Mindy Kaling because she’s so darn funny.
Lunch
I didn’t feel like putting much effort into lunch today and pulled a pizza out of the freezer and figured that would do!
I ate three slices of Kashi BBQ chicken pizza (and went back for a fourth about 30 minutes later) and paired my pizza with golden tomatoes. Gotta use ‘em or lose ‘em!
Now I’m off to finish packing before my father-in-law arrives in town and we head out to dinner.
I’ll see ya next time from the airport!
Question of the Afternoon
- What is the funniest book you’ve ever read?
Lisa says
Oh man, I know what you mean about those pre vacation pop ups! I feel like all of a sudden I just get super busy before I have to be somewhere.
You will love the Mindy Kaling book! It’s SO good and pretty darn funny. I recommend the Chelsea Handler books as well, because hers are pretty awesome.
Bailey Rodgers says
I’m not much of a comedy book reader, I tend to like really gripping and exciting novels. But that book looks HILARIOUS. You’ll have to tell us if its good or not!
Jen says
Without a doubt, Tina Fey’s Bossypants. I’d start laughing while reading it on the subway and get funny looks from people. I also loved Mindy Kaling’s book, which I’ve read twice now. She’s actually an alumni of my undergrad and when she said she went there to “pursue my love of white people and North Face parkas” I laughed so hard because that’s pretty accurate.
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles says
David Sedaris cracks me up. I’ve read When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and Naked, and they’re all so great!
I LOVE Mindy Kaling, but I never knew she had a book out! Definitely going on my to-read list.
Also, fun fact, did you know that Chris Colfer (Kurt from Glee) came out with a children’s novel?
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
I love golden tomatoes!! That’s a great side for pizza.
Tara@PNWRunner says
I am glad you decided to read If I Stay. I just started reading it yesterday afternoon and from the looks of it I may be done in a few days. It is pretty good thus far!
I agree that when times are busy it can be a tad bit overwhelming especially when you are going on vacation. But once you are on the plane, you can have that “ahhh” moment of relaxation!
Have a good vacation!
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness says
It’s so true, no matter how well you plan those last minute snafus always pop up! At least you had everything else under control so they didn’t become monumental hurdles. Mindy Kaling’s book is SO funny! It’s a really quick read and you’ll be laughing the whole time. I also loved Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. So SO funny.
Marilyn says
The Thursday Next (character) novels by J Fforde always make me chuckle, and I also remember laughing quite a bit over An Uncommon Reader by A Bennett.
Erica says
I love Mindy Kaling’s book! I’m pretty sure I read it in one sitting. Do you watch the Mindy Project? She’s HYSTERICAL. Also love Tina Fey’s, Bossypants.

I know what you mean about pre-vacation days being hectic. Hope you enjoy your trip.
“Let’s Pretend this Never Happened” literally made me lol as I read it in the airport on my last trip. But I also loved “Bossypants” & any David Sedaris or Chelsea Handler. I haven’t read Mindy Kaling yet.
Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin says
The day before vacation is always stressful for me – I ALWAYS feel like I’m going to forget to do or bring something! I typically don’t read funny books…I usually prefer dramatic ones or mysteries!
Becky says
I have never had the golden grape tomatoes. I will have to try them.
I know this will sound weird, but when I thought of the funniest book I ever read, the first thing that popped into my mind was all of the Junie B. Jones books I read as a little girl. I loved them because I thought they were so funny! Of course I haven’t read these books in years, but I still remember how funny they were. Good memories 🙂
Meagan says
I love the gargoyle. It’s one if my most favorites- a couple parts are.. Graphic lol but stick with it it’s incredible! If I stay is amazing to, I just finished the second novel to it and it’s truly a beautiful story! I love dramas and god help me depressing novels lol. The more I cry.. The better!! Haha

jen @nutcaseinpoint says
I liked Chelsea Handler’s books (even better was when I actually bought one of them as an audiobook and forgot to turn it down when I was crossing the border!!!) And I LOVED Kathy Griffin’s Official Book Club Selection!
Shelley says
Love the book choice! I’ve read it, but I’ll gladly reread it!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I read The Accidental Athlete last year and while I knew it would be at least kind of funny, I was surprised by just how much it made me laugh! Seriously…I found myself cracking up OUT LOUD while reading it at the gym. Only to of course start running further distances months later and having a few of those “firsts” myself… 😉
Logan @ Mountains and Miles says
“Lets Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir” it is absolutely hilarious. Like…reading on the bus..and crack up laughing out loud…and don’t even care kind of hilarious!

I’m packing tonight too and you’re so right! This trip snuck up on me big time.
I’m really glad If I Stay won the vote….Excited to start reading this one on the plane 🙂
Summer says
David sedaris’ me talk pretty one day is my favorite book- soooo funny, by far his best
A lot of people mentioned Jenny Lawson’s book- it’s really funny in pieces, but I had a hard time sitting down and really reading through it. She has a very original, authentic voice. It’s great, but at times overwhelming
Brittany @ DulceVie says
I need to read Mindy’s book! I have heard such great things about it!
Lauren says
AHH! I love her book. SO funny. She had me hooked after the first page. I couldn’t put it down! I’m glad this book was chosen as the book of the month and I’m going to pick it up tomorrow! I just finished The Fault in Our Stars – I know I’m a little late 😉 – and sniffled a bit, not going to lie.
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny says
Joan Rivers – I Hate Everyone, Starting With Me! funniest book I’ve ever read (except I listened to it!)
Brie @ Eat Books says
Ohhh Mindy’s book is great! (I actually listened to it on audio), but it’s a VERY quick read so I don’t think I’d recommend lugging it along on a trip. I’m serious – it’s like a 4-hour read, tops! 🙂 So jealous you’re jet-setting away again so soon! Have a great trip!
Karey @ Nutty About Health says
The vacation sounds amazing!!! I’m sure you’ll all have a great time! Can’t wait to see some pics! If I could go on vacation anywhere right now, I’d go to San Francisco (again – been there twice), or overseas to Italy.
