Good afternoon!
A typical Sunday for the Fagan family includes three things:
- Church
- Grocery shopping
- Extra long walks with Sadie
Three things I enjoy very much! Although, if I’m being honest, I enjoy grocery shopping with Ryan only most of the time.
There’s a small percentage of our grocery shopping adventures together that aren’t all that fantastic. These grocery shopping trips occur when I am in a browsing mood and feel like taking my time wandering the aisles. This is basically Ryan’s worst nightmare.
When I am taking “forever” (his words, not mine), Ryan stands at the end of the aisles giving me the “hurry up” eyes as I pick up fun foods and show them to him to try to get him excited about a new recipe idea that “just came to me” thanks to my browsing. He is not amused (unless it involves Oreos).
Fortunately, we’ve recently devised a new grocery shopping strategy. Ryan waits at the deli counter for deli meat while I get a head start on my browsing.
The Publix deli can be very backed up (waiting 10 – 15 minutes is normal on a Sunday after church), so the new plan is going very well so far. I take my time leisurely browsing for 15 minutes or so until we meet back up and it’s go-go-go. We speed through the aisles, grabbing Greek yogurt and peanut butter and kicking up dust as we zoom past other shoppers, knocking their carts over and scaring small children.
Lunch
After successfully grocery shopping this morning, we headed home ready for lunch.
I used a box of Annie Chun’s organic peanut sesame meal starters kit as the base for a pasta dish that included chicken thighs, green pepper, spinach and eggplant.
Ryan and I both loved the sauce… probably because the first ingredient in the sauce is peanut butter. Naturally.
I wanted something sweet after I polished off my noodle bowl, so I also had a small apple.
And no, I didn’t wear a Nike dri-fit tank top to church. Nor did I wear it to workout today. I just always throw my hair up and change into comfy clothes immediately when I walk into the door if I know I won’t need to look nice for the rest of the day. Ryan is the exact same way. You’ll never find us lounging in “real” clothes.
Now I’m hoping to take Sadie on an afternoon hike with Ryan before doing some chores around the house and baking. Cocoa oatmeal cookies are sounding awfully appealing at the moment!
Questions of the Afternoon
- Do you lounge in your “nice clothes” or change into comfy clothes immediately when you get home?
- If you grocery shop with someone else, do you have any “shopping strategies?”
Kat says
The emphasized words in your posts are very distracting for some reason. I’m glad y’all found a grocery strategy that works for you!
peanutbutterfingers says
sorry, there was a bit of an italics overload on this post! i didn’t even realize it, so thanks for the feedback. it has been updated and i’ll keep your thoughts in mind in the future. 🙂
janetha says
My grocery shopping strategy is never take my husband with me. Ever. That’s my time!
Kat says
That’s my strategy too! Although it is because he is strolling the aisles and I am the one knocking over senior citizens and taking out small children in my dash to get in and out.
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
I definitely change into comfy clothes to lounge around in, too! I think my neighbor across the hall probably wonders if I ever get dressed in nice clothes, because every time she knocks on my door I’m in lounging clothes 🙂
briana says
oh my gosh my husband is the same exact way I actually enjoy when I go alone so I can browse! As soon as I walk in the door from work it’s sweatpants and a tshirt I never lounge in clothes ugh so uncomfortable.
mel says
Literally the first thing I do when I walk in the door from work, school, church, whatever is put on yoga pants and a t shirt or sweat shirt. I never look nice at home! haha. I have to dress up everyday for life and I get tired of it! I run errands looking haggard too….and usually sweaty from a workout. Cute I know!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
We are comfy clothes kinds of people over here!
Joely says
Heck, if I don’t have to go out, I stay in my jammies, LOL!
My husband hates grocery shopping. Even just going to together to pick up a few things, he’s way ahead and leaving me to carry everything. I do major grocery shop a month and I don’t take him with me. I get to take my time to check nutrition labels and comparison shop. I love grocery shopping, but I love it even more without the hubby there, LOL!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
I’m ALWAYS in comfy clothes at home! And Jonny and I went grocery shopping together once and never again! I loooove taking my time, reason labels, and comparing prices. Not him. Now I go by myself and we’re both fine with it! 🙂
Kim says
I’m just like you..comfy clothes as soon as I walk in the door! 🙂
Jennifer (The Gourmetour) says
I used to never change out of my day clothes until right before bed. Recently however, that has changed! I can’t get home and into my comfys soon enough!
Antonia @ healthinspirations says
I’m glad I’m not the only person who changes into comfortable clothes as soon as I’m home. Why wear nice clothes when no one sees you? Enjoy the rest of the weekend 🙂
Lisa says
My fiancé is the same way!! I am blessed in the fact that he wants to go shopping with me and share the responsibility, but we have to specify whether it is a “browsing day” or a “fast and furious” day. On fast and furious days we divide and conquer and he gets produce and I do meat/dairy and we meet in the middle. in and out in about twenty minutes, which makes up for the hour or so browsing days about once a month! Compromise!!
Michelle says
As soon as I’m in the door comfy clothes go on. Why waste your good clothes for lounging 🙂
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
Ha! Just make sure you only knock over the carts and not the frightened small children.
I can definitely relate–my roommates refuse to grocery shop with me because I take too long!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
Here’s my strategy: leave Brandon at home. 😉 I love him, but he’s not the best in the grocery store haha.
Kara says
My boyfriend does the same thing. We pay for our groceries separately so he is usually sitting down for at least twenty minutes, calling me and asking when I will be done. Luckily he has his best friend with him at all times (mr. iphone) so he calls me twice instead of four times.
Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit says
We call them our “comfys” and we are rarely dressed in anything else when we’re at home.
Angela says
I’m the exact same way about coming home and immediately changing into comfy clothes. Why not?!
Nicole says
As for the comfy clothes, my lululemon pants and my boyfriend’s hoodie are the first thing i put on as soon as i walk in the door! And as for grocery shopping – I like to browse, but nobody is worse than my bf. i think we should try your solution!
Sana says
I change my clothes ASAP, when I get home 🙂
Katie for Life says
My boyfriend and I are ALWAYS in comfy clothes at home! The other day, I happened to keep jeans on for a little bit after we got home, and he was like “Why are you wearing jeans?” like it was against the rules. 🙂
Lauren says
Oh I totally get this! That is why my husband and I promised each other NEVER to go grocery shopping together. It’s the best thing for our marriage, really.
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I always change into comfy clothes, unless i’m heading out within the hour. I just feel like I can relax better!
Ilana says
I like you love to browse up and down the aisles, developing recipe ideas, comparing products, looking for new finds, etc. I always make sure I do it alone and give myself plenty of time, as it’s sort of a nice reprieve from the craziness of school work and other commitments. Is that weird…? LOL. Love this blog, Julie!
Lindsey says
Comfy clothes are put on within minutes of being home. One days where we aren’t going anywhere until later in the day you will not see me out of workout capris and hoodies or tank tops!
Since my husband is super picky about his apples, he takes a while to do that so I go through the rest of the produce while he does that.
Lyndsi says
Our grocery shopping spans two or three stores. We always go to Fresh Market after church for meat and fresh produce but hit up Wal-Mart for everything else (because it’s so much cheaper there). And sometimes I end up going to Publix during the week because it’s the closest store. Fun! ha.
And we’re the same way – the first thing we do when we get home for the day is put on “comfy clothes.”
Michelle W says
Oh, I miss Publix SO much!! We moved from Pensacola to California, and the grocery stores here have nothing on the good old Pub.
Stephanie @ Snacking☀nSunshine says
I miss Publix so much too!! I live in Toronto, and whenever I’m back in Daytona it’s one of the first places I go. Publix, Dustins, Chick-fil-A and the beach. *Sigh*
Katie @wishandwhimsy says
I LOVE grocery shopping. I find it very therapeutic. Have you used the Fooducate app? I use Fooducate all of the time at the grocery, and now I find grocery shopping to be a game. Love it.
peanutbutterfingers says
no! what is this magical app???
Katie @wishandwhimsy says
I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it. Fooducate is an app (on i-phone or andriod) that allows you to scan bar codes on different food items and the app grades the item and then offers 5 to 10 other healthier alternatives. You can scan the app or type in an item. Go to http://www.fooducate.com. It seriously changed the way I grocery shop. (Wow, I sound like a sales rep for it, don’t I?) Have a great day!
Nathan says
Never sit in nice clothes…if its just us..im in shorts and a hoodie
And no one goes shopping with me..its me, my list, and im not from Russia…so no rushin me and the grocery store
Heidi says
I’m not a fan of grocery shopping, but I’m shopping for seven people. I HAVE to do it alone though.
Comfy clothes are a must as soon as I get home!
Bee Goes Bananas says
My husband and I can have the same shopping days that you guys experience! One of our biggest grocery related quarrels are about Casey’s quantity over quality attitude vs my quality preferences. Needless to say, we buy certain things separately now, like “his” and “hers” bread loaves.
Heather H. @ Run Eat Play says
You’ll only find me in yoga pants or VS sweat pants at home! I hate lounging in jeans!
peanutbutterfingers says
i honestly think jeans are some of the most uncomfortable clothing!
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
Fabian is the same. He HATES when I browse. Gets soooo annoyed with me. So he always gets the deli meat and I keep moving down the aisle. Or if we forget something in another aisle, he gets that too. Gives me some extra time!
Kerry @ Half Healthy, Half Nuts says
My husband is the exact same way! This is why I don’t take him grocery shopping with me anymore. I LOVE taking my time, going up and down all of the aisles, reading all of the labels – it’s therapeutic! Just can’t do that with him in tow. 🙂
Megan says
Our Sundays sound identical! Except I still don’t have a dog. (Everyone gang up on my husband and tell him to get me one please!)
We always get into ‘comfy’ clothes when we get into the house too 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
dear mr. megan, get her a dog!! 🙂
Abby @ Change of Pace says
Mr. Megan,
Get a dog!!! Best choice my husband and I ever made!
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I’m the opposite when it comes to grocery shopping – I want to get in and out quickly and my boyfriend likes to take a leisurely stroll through the grocery store (drives me nuts!). I also can never be found wearing real clothes at my apt. – mostly yoga pants for me!
Kathleen says
As soon as I walk in the door it’s off with work clothes and into my comfy sweats. Love my comfy clothes :). And I despise grocery shopping myself so I definitely don’t take anyone with me … Not to mention when I do bring my kids or hubby i wind up spending way more than I want.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
haha! this post was too funny because my husband and i can relate on so many areas. i never take him grocery shopping with me because he just wants to get in and get out while i like to browse and meander. he always tries to “divide and conquer” so we can get everything accomplished faster.
as for lounging at home, we both immediately get into our sweats and comfies when we get home from anywhere. i don’t know how people lounge in jeans!
Molly from LifesLemonsbyMolly says
Me too. To the point where I take mini grocery shopping trips by myself during the week for something to do and have a chance for a decent browsing session.
Brooke says
Haha real clothes! I don’t think anyone really sits around in real clothes. I love being comfy at home. Today’s post was quite funny! glad you got a new strategy going and I love the green-friendly publix bags!
Molly from LifesLemonsbyMolly says
I agree. If Forever Lazys were socially acceptable I would constantly wear them. Fleece and elastic waistbands are the ultimate comfort clothes.
Heather says
Regarding grocery shopping, if I don’t have a list made before I walk in the store, it’s browsing all the way. I usually make the list by aisle so we can be efficient. The worst trips are when I’m in the mood for dessert (aka ice cream) and it turns into a junk food run. Oops!
My roommates in college always laughed at me because I always change into comfy pants the minute I get home. Sometimes I don’t mind the shirt, so I’ll have a nice top with sweatpants. Looks ridiculous, but so comfy!
Alycia says
My hubby hates it, but I change in to what I call my “cozies” the minute I walk in the door. Usually my Adidas running pants and a tshirt or sweatshirt. I figure why not be comfy when you are at home?!
Laura C says
I went to the grocery store with my boyfriend today after work. He really wasn’t excited about it but only went in with me (I told him he could stay outside and read in the car if he wanted) because otherwise “I would take two hours and come out with an extra cart full that we didn’t need” and he had to “watch me”. I’d have been mad but he’s right lol.
I did manage to sneak in the new Multigrain Peanut butter Cheerios and the new Ben & Jerry’s greek frozen yogurt in Peanut butter banana :). Have you tried them yet? I”m excited. Totally thought of PBFingers when I was buying them!
peanutbutterfingers says
oooh! no! did you like the ben & jerry’s frozen greek yogurt? i’m tempted to give it a try myself but haven’t just yet b/c i haven’t heard too much about whether or not it’s worth the money.
Laura C says
Haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll let you know when I do… I’ll be so sad if something that combines peanut butter, bananas, and frozen yogurt turns out to be bad 🙁
My boyfriend tried the chocolate raspberry chunk greek frozen yogurt and said that it wasn’t bad, but he was hoping it was going to be a little more tart.
The peanut butter cheerios were definitely worth it though!
Amber K says
I tried it and it’s not bad, but it is literally just banana fro-yo with a bit of a peanut butter swirl. Since those things taste good it’s not bad, but I could just make banana soft serve and make my own peanut butter swirl and save myself the $$ and the extra ingredients.
krystal says
My husband and i are the same as you two at the grocery for sure!! He always gets so annoyed if i compare labels or want to browse about. i definately change my clothes as soon as i walk in the door as well. You should feel comfy at home:)
Holly at Healthy Living Holly says
i ALWAYS change into comfy clothes! i ran a 10K race today & after cleaning up in my race gear, i showered and now i’m back in my pajamas.
funny you should mention grocery shopping – i am going today! however when my boyfriend and i shop we don’t really use any strategies. we both like to take our time and look at all of our options (and things we don’t need).
Sara @my less serious life says
haha! my boyfriend and i have exact same strategy! so funny 🙂
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile says
I am the same way. I love finding new things to try out so I browse forever. Plus I can’t make a decision for the life of me so if I need a new jar of nut butter lets say, I stand there forever deciding which one to get lol
Heather S says
Without fail as soon as we walk in any store my husband says,”this is an in and out job” everytime! I only listen about half the time 🙂
Rebecca says
I use exactly the same shopping strategy when we go shopping, works every time. As for the comfy clothes, I will always get into the as soon as possible. There’s nothing like a pair of jogging pants, t-shirt and a nice big hoodie to wrap up in.
Serena says
My stadegy is to never ever take my husband.
peanutbutterfingers says
that may be brilliant! 🙂
