Good afternoon!
A typical Sunday for the Fagan family includes three things:
- Church
- Grocery shopping
- Extra long walks with Sadie
Three things I enjoy very much! Although, if I’m being honest, I enjoy grocery shopping with Ryan only most of the time.
There’s a small percentage of our grocery shopping adventures together that aren’t all that fantastic. These grocery shopping trips occur when I am in a browsing mood and feel like taking my time wandering the aisles. This is basically Ryan’s worst nightmare.
When I am taking “forever” (his words, not mine), Ryan stands at the end of the aisles giving me the “hurry up” eyes as I pick up fun foods and show them to him to try to get him excited about a new recipe idea that “just came to me” thanks to my browsing. He is not amused (unless it involves Oreos).
Fortunately, we’ve recently devised a new grocery shopping strategy. Ryan waits at the deli counter for deli meat while I get a head start on my browsing.
The Publix deli can be very backed up (waiting 10 – 15 minutes is normal on a Sunday after church), so the new plan is going very well so far. I take my time leisurely browsing for 15 minutes or so until we meet back up and it’s go-go-go. We speed through the aisles, grabbing Greek yogurt and peanut butter and kicking up dust as we zoom past other shoppers, knocking their carts over and scaring small children.
Lunch
After successfully grocery shopping this morning, we headed home ready for lunch.
I used a box of Annie Chun’s organic peanut sesame meal starters kit as the base for a pasta dish that included chicken thighs, green pepper, spinach and eggplant.
Ryan and I both loved the sauce… probably because the first ingredient in the sauce is peanut butter. Naturally.
I wanted something sweet after I polished off my noodle bowl, so I also had a small apple.
And no, I didn’t wear a Nike dri-fit tank top to church. Nor did I wear it to workout today. I just always throw my hair up and change into comfy clothes immediately when I walk into the door if I know I won’t need to look nice for the rest of the day. Ryan is the exact same way. You’ll never find us lounging in “real” clothes.
Now I’m hoping to take Sadie on an afternoon hike with Ryan before doing some chores around the house and baking. Cocoa oatmeal cookies are sounding awfully appealing at the moment!
Questions of the Afternoon
- Do you lounge in your “nice clothes” or change into comfy clothes immediately when you get home?
- If you grocery shop with someone else, do you have any “shopping strategies?”
Danica @ It's Progression says
I always only hang out at home in comfy clothes. It’s one of the very first things I do when I walk in the door from work each afternoon!
As far as grocery shopping strategies, I meal plan for the week and make a list, then do my best to stick to it because i too could browse for way too long at the grocery store.
eliza says
Lol thats funny about you and Ryan having to be in comfy clothes @ home.
I feel the same way but my fiance doesnt! He could stay in his jeans and work shirt til we go to bed.. I always ask if hes uncomfortable because i know I would be!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I usually prefer to grocery shop alone. I feel like when my husband & I go together, we encourage each other to buy random items we don’t really need… bad influences! Unless I know I’ll be buying something heavy (like a case of water) that I’ll want help with, I’m happy to shop solo.
Emilia says
I always change into comfy clothes the minute I walk into the house as well. I cannot stand the idea of mussing up my good clothes, especially jeans!
Interesting grocery shopping strategies! My only “strategy” is to make a list on my itouch and then go in and buy ONLY those things. Makes it quicker and cheaper!

hi Julie, your comment about changing the minute you walk in your door not only made me think of myself, but this funny ecard I saw on pintrest!
peanutbutterfingers says
LOL! YES! This is too funny… and too true.
Grecia says
“knocking carts over and scaring small children”, that made me laugh so much.
Nicole says
I do all the grocery shopping by myself!
My b-f recently told me that yoga pants are almost like their own “food group” in my closet. So yes, I totally change into comfy clothes as soon as possible.
Lauren @ Lawfully Wedded Wife says
Haha, my hubs is the SAME WAY when we go grocery shopping. Most of the time I just leave him home! 😉 Then I can browse all I want with no pressure!
Lindsay says
Haha, I loved this post! My boyfriend is the exact same way. He also gets annoyed when I forget items as we’re going through the aisles, only to remember as we’re about to check out. I’ve recently starting sending him out to get food items on the list that he can easily pick out. At least he’s good with instructions!
Brittney says
I’ve gotten really lazy actually. The clothes I wear to zumba are just sooo comfy and since I go 5 days a week I have started wearing them to class haha. I think it’s because I’m burnt out and ready for this semester to be OVER (8 days and finals week!!!) But can you really expect more from a college student? lol
Leah @ DeLeahLicious says
Your wedding ring twists on your finger just like mine does. I wish it fit better, but the next size is too tight. 🙁 Poor us!
peanutbutterfingers says
i knoooow. it ALWAYS twists… but then in the summer when it’s hot and my fingers swell, it stays in place. 🙂
Jen @nutcaseinpoint says
The fastest thing I can ever do: get in my ‘jams before fully getting through the front door
peanutbutterfingers says
yes! i feel like i can change in 10 seconds FLAT!
BaileyA says
Curiously, I never quite caught on to the concept of immediately changing into lounge clothes while at home until I studied abroad in Spain where that is the norm (my host mom thought it quite odd when I didn’t partake in this activity – or wear socks). Now I do nothing else until I’m in my comfy sweats!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
Haha, I change into comfy clothes when I get home too. I had a friend who’s husband stayed in his suit from work til he went to bed – I thought that was so strange.
Megan @ The I Do Diaries says
I am notorious for changing into “lounging” clothes within the first few minutes of walking in the door after running errands or a long day at work. I love a good pair of yoga pants and a soft cotton tee, and often steal a pair of my husband’s extra thick socks 🙂
I have to admit that I actually love going to the grocery store by myself. I take my time browsing the aisles, thinking up recipes in my head, and it’s a lot easier to pull healthy food without my husband tagging along sneaking chips and Oreos into the cart 😉 The only bad thing is that I have to lug all the groceries to the car alone!
Yellow Haired Girl says
Sweatpants + hair piled on top of my head usually happens about 15 seconds after I walk in the door at the end of each day. I love lounging in comfy clothes! I hung out in yoga clothes today and didn’t workout at all 🙂
Hillary says
I change into my pajamas immediately after my afternoon gym workout—which means I’m in pajamas by 5pm most days. No shame!
Amanda says
Ahhh, a kindred spirit. No matter how cute my work dress/hair is, it is OFF when I walk in that door.
VanessaG says
I too change into comfy clothes(sweats, t-shirt, or shorts in the summer) as soon ad I get home from church or work. I do my grocery shopping usually on Sunday as well, and it has to be the most crowded day of the week!
Rebecca says
My bf is the same way. It stresses me out! I like to read labels sometimes and it takes me a bit in my mind to figure out what exactly I want to get and how to use it, and he goes nuts! He stands hovered over the cart staring at me and if I take too long, he starts saying “are you almost done? my feet hurt.” or, “babe….” hahaha! I always change into comfy clothes, too.
Sally @ sally's baking addiction says
aaaaaand this is why i grocery shop alone! it’s probably my favorite activity to do. i’m serious when i say the grocery is my favorite store. so sad!
Brittany says
I’m eating the strawberry shortcake Greek frozen yogurt right now and it’s so good. It has lots of chunks of strawberries and it’s really creamy. You should try it!
Lauren @ Vaguely Vegan says
I hate wasting ” nice” clothes when I know I’m just going to be hanging around the house for awhile. As soon as I walk in the door I change…completely necessary! And I agree with a few of the above commenters, I try to make sure my fiance doesn’t come with me to grocery shop. He is a marketing company’s dream! He gets distracted by every cool new product or cleverly stacked end-cap and ends up spending a ton of $ on stuff that is not needed.
Taylor @ Nuts for Apples says
Ah I need to take your shopping strategy tip! My boyfriend does the SAME thing with me, he is definitely not amused by my “browsing.” But I can’t help, I honestly love grocery shopping! haha
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
haha this sounds like my boyfriend and I shopping! I love going with him but if I am in a mood where I like to linger in the ethnic aisle, then we have a problem. I am totally a comfy clothes kind of girl at home!
Abby @ Change of Pace says
Lol…my husband and I are total opposites. I always have to give him the “hurry up” eyes and attitude!
Comfy clothes all the way, as soon as I get home from anywhere!
Caiti S. says
Comfy clothes all the way, I like to get out of ‘normal’ clothes asap. As for grocery shopping, I go by myself half the time and with my boyfriend half the time. I work for Publix so I make it my mission to get in and out quickly. He is the one that likes to browse and explore.
Natasha says
I definitely change into something comfy as soon as I get home too! basically I live in comfy pants 🙂
Adrianna says
basically i never wear real clothes unless I’m at work or out with people. literally I’m peeling off my bra and kicking off shoes while removing pants through the door, straight to the bathroom to wash off make-up. yea…I’m a little obsessed with the comfort thing 🙂 sweats/shorts and tees are gifts from heaven.
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
I always change into comfy clothes when I get home. In fact, I wore Nike running shorts (just because) today and my mom asked me if I was going to work out. Nope, just have on my comfy weekend clothes :)!
Nicola says
Yeah I live in workout clothes haha. I wear them to uni, lounging at home, the gym, work haha. People who don’t know me that well are like ‘oh have you just been to the gym?’ i’m like no….. I just wear this all the time lol. I actually rarely get in my nice tops or dresses anymore.
Carly Moorehead says
I’m the same way with my clothes… as soon as I get home from work, it’s into either workout pants, or pajamas. And my fiance is the same when it comes to the grocery store… he’s the one that wants to wander and get unhealthy food (I’m trying to lose a significant amount of weight) and it drives me crazy! I go in with a list SPECIFICALLY so I have a mission and am not tempted to get all the chips/cookies/snacks that he wants!
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
Comfy clothes are on my body within 10 minutes of getting home!
Botox Gal says
Your lunch looks delicious, I’m going to have to see if I can find that here and try it.
I totally change into comfy clothes when I get home from work, appointments, church etc..
jane says
I’m like you, the first thing I do when I walk in the house is get changed into my daggy track pants, a sloppy T and my slippers, nothing beats comfort when lounging at home. I do recall you cooking dinner in a gorgeous yellow cocktail dress one evening – I think your mum and sister have also worn the dress and I think you ended up wearing it to a work function for Ryan?? That dress is one of my favourite PBF outfits so far 🙂
I love to take my time and go up and down each aisle. I never, ever take the hubby or any of the kids cause all I hear is “can we go now” and I end up feeling rushed so 99% of the time I shop alone! Have a great day 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
LOL! yes! i remember that! 😀
jane says
P.S. I am feeling snacky at the moment and that picture of you with the apple has actually inspired me to get one from the fridge – a much better choice than what I was thinking about 🙂 Thanks Julie, you are a legend!
peanutbutterfingers says
woohoo! small victory! 😀
Kate says
Same, my husband and I always get changed into comfy clothes after work, shopping or a special outing. My husband has only come grocery shopping with me about twice in almost 4 years of living together, he doesn’t like crowds and supermarkets much at all and browsing, it is nice though to have someone push the trolley and help load the groceries in the car though!
Amanda says
I’m in comfy clothes within five minutes of entering the door. It’s how I roll! 🙂
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
It’s 60/40% for me! I have comfy clothes on 60% of the time, 40 is when I just want to be “ready” to hit the day in decent clothes, or I’m just too tired to change into comfy clothes….:P And that sounds like a good strategy! My husband (still sounds so weird!) thinks it’s cool/funny when I get excited over groceries here and there and will be patient for a while, but then if he’s there too long he’ll start to dread it.
Liz says
I always change into pj or workout pants & a t-shirt as soon as I’m home for the day. I hate hanging out at home in ‘real’ clothes 😉
Khushboo Thadani says
I prefer grocery shopping solo for that same reason…those “hurry up” eyes are very distracting! And yes for changing into comfy clothes as soon as I walk into the door, even if I know I’m heading out later! Off come the jeans & bra and on comes the pjs :)!
sue says
My mother always liked to go grocery shopping with my dad — she would give him the list to do the serious shopping and she would just browse!
Jay says
I laughed out loud reading your blog about the shopping !!!! That is SO funny, I think most of us can relate. As for the “changing clothes”, absolutely. As soon as I walk through the door, I change into comfortable clothing, usually sporting attire, I’ve done that for as long as I can remember. Now the Jellys, I was a 60’s child, and yes, I had a pair too, and I remember hating them. I always had blisters and they hurt me, but I think they look great !
Amanda @ Simply Southern says
The first thing I do when I get home is change into my comfies! And I NEVER shop with my husband anymore…..ever. But, if I lose my mind and decide it might be a good idea…..I immediately remember why when he begins zoning out or looking over my shoulder and picking items off the list without considering if it’s on sale, the ingredients, or nutritional info….. I have two kids so I consider grocery shopping a mini vacation! I love to look at new products and think about what I can make with them too!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
We do the same thing at the supermarket! My fiance can’t stand when I drag him there. So he waits at the deli counter while I browse. I swear I could spend hours in the supermarket just looking at everything. I think it’s fun 🙂
Tina says
Oh yes – comfy clothes are a must the minute I walk in the door.
And, my shopping strategy is to just grocery shop by myself because I love to wander and my husband does not. It does help that we have a grocery store in the first floor of our building, so we don’t really ever stock up on much at a time.
Kristi @ lifesprinkles says
I’m with you on the comfy clothes all the way 🙂 I’m also a huge grocery store browser too which is strange because when I was younger I used to despise being dragged around by my mom to do the grocery shopping (there were five of us to feed = a lot of groceries) and now it’s hands down one of my favorite things to do!
Kat says
I always change to comfy clothes straight away. In fact I have friends who won’t speak to me until I’ve changed as they say the nice clothes keep me in work mode and apparently work me is all business.
Annie says
when my hubby and i moved in together, our grocery store strategy was to organize our shopping list based on the layout of the store (right to left), bring $100 cash (to keep ourselves from frivolous spending), and he’d push the cart while i located/checked items off the list. it was a well-oiled machine of awesome that always made me feel so accomplished by the time we reached check-out. he even loaded items onto the belt based on how he wanted them bagged (cold items together, breads/chips/breakables came last, etc). i think the best part was when the bagger would incorrectly (according to my hubby) bag the items in our reusable bags, and he’d re-pack them to his liking once the bagger moved it into the cart. so funny.
“kicking up dust as we zoom past other shoppers, knocking their carts over and scaring small children. ” …this is us. on point.
jen says
my husband thinks its so funny but the minute i walk in the door from whatever im at least out of my jeans asap. i cant stand sitting around in them! my whole family does this as well and i never noticed it till he pointed it out. my husband on the other hand will stay in jeans and shoes for 10 hours even if 8 of them are spent at home. i always go “dont you want to put on comfy pants or take your shoes off?!?” and he just says it doesnt bug him. i feel uncomfortable just looking at him lol
