During her stay, I received an email from Sequel, a new website that offers diamond and gemstone resetting online. They asked if I had any jewelry I’d like to have reset and immediately my mom popped into my mind. I asked if they would be willing to allow me to have a piece of my grandmother’s jewelry reset as a gift to my mother.
As you may know if you read my blog this summer, we lost Mimi, my mother’s mother a week after we were all together in Raleigh for my baby shower. Her loss was (and continues to be) a hard one but whenever we remember Mimi, we cannot help but smile. When my Aunt Laurie came to meet Chase for the first time, she brought some of Mimi’s jewelry with her and left behind her beautiful diamond engagement ring for my mom.
The ring didn’t fit my mom’s hand, but she mentioned the beauty of the diamond in the ring a number of times.
When I asked her if she might like to have the diamond reset so she could wear the ring regularly, her eyes lit up! We curled up on the couch together and started browsing through Sequel for inspiration.
Sequel made everything so easy. The entire resetting process, from start to finish, was a breeze and I cannot recommend this site enough if you have a precious diamond or gemstone you would like to have reset for yourself or a loved one.
My mom and I were able to completely recreate a new piece of jewelry from my grandmother’s beautiful diamond and I absolutely love the story behind the setting my mother chose.
In my mom’s words:
Many years ago, I received a ring from my mother’s father, PopPop. It was a garnet in a white gold setting. I absolutely loved the ring. During a Latin Club trip to Greece when I was in high school, the ring was taken from my suitcase in a hotel. I have always felt sad about losing my special ring and wanted to have a garnet ring again. This ring will have special meaning to me as it will combine Mom’s engagement ring (a reminder of the love she and Daddy shared) and a garnet – a deep red stone that I once loved from my grandfather.
The fact that her new ring reminds her of her mother and her grandfather means so much to me and I’m so, so grateful to Sequel for allowing me to gift something so special to my incredible mother.
The setting my mom chose is clean and modern and she plans to wear it on her right ring finger.
Resetting a diamond or gemstone through Sequel is accessible, simple and affordable (you are only charged for your setting) and the price for resetting begins at only $55. (Sequel covers the shipping, packaging, consultation, unsetting and resetting costs.)
You can browse the site for inspiration or work with a ReStylist who will provide you with inspiration and ideas for your stone. They will help you understand what metals go best with what colored stones and provide before and after images so you know what your resetting will look like ahead of time. And don’t think resetting only applies to rings! You can reset diamonds and gemstones into earrings, a bracelet or a necklace as well.

I lost my Neena this summer and would love to have one of her diamonds reset with birthstones of my mom, sister, and I. What a pretty ring you chose, and a great way to keep your grandmother close!

Hi Julie! What a great gift to your mom. I lost my grandmother a year ago yesterday. It was the absolute worst pain I have ever felt. She was so special to me. She always said I could have her engagement ring and I would love to wear it daily as a reminder that she is with me and always will be. I would love to get her ring reset.

This is so funny – my fiance and I have been discussing getting my engagement ring reset for a few weeks now, so this would be ideal. 🙂 The ring is from his grandmother and fits perfectly, but it’s in a kind of a triangle shape and has been difficult to match with any wedding band. We were thinking of getting it reset in a really simple rose gold band, like this one: http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/stacking-ring-4mm/your-center-stone-14k-rose-gold-ring/12k890?mode=prerequest. 🙂

I love this simple setting: http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/timeless-knot-ring/your-center-stone-14k-white-gold-ring/10yy5m?mode=prerequest
It would be the perfect, dainty setting for my late grandmother’s engagement ring!

My father bought me a birthstone ring when I was a young girl. He is no longer with us, but I would love to wear it daily instead of having it stashed away in a jewelry box.

This is such a special giveaway! I am recently divorced and have a 5 year old daughter. I have always wanted to do something special with my wedding/engagement ring for her to show that even though things didn’t work out for me and her dad, that our love created her, the best thing to happen to us. My idea would be to take the stones and make them into a necklace that I can give her when she is a bit older. Thank you for sharing this service with us!

That is a gorgeous ring your mom has now! I would love to have my grandmother’s ring reset. It was the ring she got for her 16th birthday from her mother and it was passed on to me when she passed away a few years ago. It is extra special to me since we share a February birthday, so the amethyst stone is perfect!
Sarah B says
My grandma passed away suddenly two summers ago. She left behind a ruby ring…the ruby is very tiny, but the ring itself is too big for me. I’ve thought about having the ruby set into a simply necklace or just another simple ring.

My husbands grandfather gave me a necklace with 3 stones. I would love to change those into three stackable rings.

What an awesome company! I’ll have to share with my family members!
I have this large amethyst ring that I won’t wear because it stands up to tall and I run into EVERYTHING so I don’t want to ruin it. I have wanted to get it reset into a necklace because its so beautiful. My grandmother gave it to me when I was younger and I have always loved it!
I think I would either do the emerald-cut solitaire pendant or the emerald cut solitaire pendant with accent. Both are stunning!

What a neat gift to your mom – I love it! I have a ruby that my husband gave me that needs setting – so it would be wonderful to win. The settings are beautiful on their site – this would be one option as a ring –

I’d let my mom get her engagement ring reset. She loves it but she knows its plain. I know she’d love something more flashy. Maybe something like this: http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/isabella-ring/your-center-stone-14k-white-gold-ring-with-blue-sapphire-and-diamond/12f7dk?mode=prerequest

I have a garnet ring of my grandmothers I would love to have reset. I don’t wear it because the gold is so delicate I am afraid the stone will fall out.

This is such a neat idea. What a great way to make jewelry left behind by loved ones more wearable! I would love to reset some of the jewelry from rings from my grandpa that are simply way to small so they just sit in a jewelry box instead of being worn daily. Or even some of the stones off of broaches that aren’t as wearable today! I’m about to go browse that website on the first break I get 😉

I would love to be able to have my mother’s engagement ring reset. It was my dad’s grandmothers and my mom has always wanted to reset it, but still keep the meaning behind it. This would allow her to get something new, but to keep the sentimental value of the diamond!
Kelly K says
My grandmother passed away two years ago unexpectedly. My family and I had moved in with her when I was 5 years old and I was 25 when she passed away so needless to say, we had become very close over the years. I consider myself lucky that I was able to spend day in and day out with my grandmother for those 20 years and learn from her. When she passed away, she left me her engagement ring that my grandfather gave to her many many years ago. I never met my grandfather as he also unexpectedly passed away when my mother was 2 months old. My grandmother never remarried and was one strong woman.
I have her engagement ring next to my bed in the box my grandfather presented it to her in. Every morning when I wake up, I am always reminded of my grandmother. While her ring fits me, I don’t wear it for the sole fact that it was my grandmother’s engagement ring but I would love to have her diamond reset and keep her with me all day long.
Jacki @ Two Forks One Love says
My aunt gave me a ring of my grandmothers (ruby) — it’s pretty, but definitely not my style. I’d love to get it reset into a ring or necklace I can wear more often. The oval cut accent necklace is definitely my style.

What a sweet story behind your moms new ring! I love it!
My husband got me a beautiful diamond ring when our first son was born. It is a simple band with 4 small diamonds in it. But the diamonds are loose and I am afraid to wear it! I love this idea! Just the other day I was cleaning my jewelry box and came upon a pendant my dad have given me, but I just never wear and thought I should turn it into something else. It has a few rubies in it, my birthstone which I love.
This Boutonniere ring would be perfect to highlight this special gem and something I know my dad would pick as well. Love the idea!

My mother passed away when I was in college. I have always wanted to have her engagement ring reset to have something I could wear, to have a piece of her always with me, but I never knew where to start. As my parents wedding anniversary is coming up on December 3rd it is something I have thought about a lot lately so the timing for this post was absolutely perfect!
Katie says
For my 20th birthday, my Mom gave me diamond earrings made from stones from her 10 year wedding anniversary ring. I absolutely adored them and wore them all the time! At the time I was in college and a waitress. After a shift one night, I came to the horrible realization that I had only ONE of the earrings in. Myself and the rest of the wait staff searched the entire restaurant top to bottom but never found the missing earring. I was heartbroken and cried my eyes out. I placed the remaining earring in a safe place where it remains to this day, but this sounds like an amazing opportunity to give the stone new life and continue to wear such an amazing gift! I would choose the Bezel Ring design from the Sequel collection. 🙂
Katie N. says
My great aunt left me a beautiful, but very 80’s style ring with small rubies and diamonds in it. I have always wanted to reset it, but just hadn’t done it. I really like the 3 stone bracelet, but there are several rings I likes as well. Who knows. With the number of stones, maybe I could have it set into several different pieces.
