A Sequel Surprise (+ Jewelry Resetting Giveaway!)

November 18, 2015 by Julie 284 Comments

After Chase was born, my mom drove up to our home in Charlotte from Jacksonville, Florida to meet her new grandson and help us with the transition into life as new parents. As the days passed, I realized very quickly just how incredibly helpful she was, not only for her assistance with Chase but for her company and emotional support. I was tired and overwhelmed, naturally questioning everything about my role as a new mom, but having my mother there to assure me that I was doing just fine made a world of difference.

During her stay, I received an email from Sequel, a new website that offers diamond and gemstone resetting online. They asked if I had any jewelry I’d like to have reset and immediately my mom popped into my mind. I asked if they would be willing to allow me to have a piece of my grandmother’s jewelry reset as a gift to my mother.

Sequel Ring Resetting

As you may know if you read my blog this summer, we lost Mimi, my mother’s mother a week after we were all together in Raleigh for my baby shower. Her loss was (and continues to be) a hard one but whenever we remember Mimi, we cannot help but smile. When my Aunt Laurie came to meet Chase for the first time, she brought some of Mimi’s jewelry with her and left behind her beautiful diamond engagement ring for my mom.

Diamond Engagement Ring

The ring didn’t fit my mom’s hand, but she mentioned the beauty of the diamond in the ring a number of times.

When I asked her if she might like to have the diamond reset so she could wear the ring regularly, her eyes lit up! We curled up on the couch together and started browsing through Sequel for inspiration.

Sequel made everything so easy. The entire resetting process, from start to finish, was a breeze and I cannot recommend this site enough if you have a precious diamond or gemstone you would like to have reset for yourself or a loved one.

My mom and I were able to completely recreate a new piece of jewelry from my grandmother’s beautiful diamond and I absolutely love the story behind the setting my mother chose.

Diamond and Garnet Ring

In my mom’s words:

Many years ago, I received a ring from my mother’s father, PopPop. It was a garnet in a white gold setting. I absolutely loved the ring. During a Latin Club trip to Greece when I was in high school, the ring was taken from my suitcase in a hotel. I have always felt sad about losing my special ring and wanted to have a garnet ring again. This ring will have special meaning to me as it will combine Mom’s engagement ring (a reminder of the love she and Daddy shared) and a garnet – a deep red stone that I once loved from my grandfather.

Garnet and Diamond Ring

The fact that her new ring reminds her of her mother and her grandfather means so much to me and I’m so, so grateful to Sequel for allowing me to gift something so special to my incredible mother.

The setting my mom chose is clean and modern and she plans to wear it on her right ring finger.

Diamond Resetting

Resetting a diamond or gemstone through Sequel is accessible, simple and affordable (you are only charged for your setting) and the price for resetting begins at only $55. (Sequel covers the shipping, packaging, consultation, unsetting and resetting costs.)

You can browse the site for inspiration or work with a ReStylist who will provide you with inspiration and ideas for your stone. They will help you understand what metals go best with what colored stones and provide before and after images so you know what your resetting will look like ahead of time. And don’t think resetting only applies to rings! You can reset diamonds and gemstones into earrings, a bracelet or a necklace as well.

Sequel Giveaway + Discount

If you or someone you love have a diamond or gemstone you would like to have reset, I think you will like today’s giveaway! Sequel is giving away a free reset of a diamond or gemstone of up to $500.

Sequel is also offering all PBF readers 10 percent off any reset through their site. Simply mention PBFINGERS to receive your discount!

To enter this giveaway, please leave a comment on this post and tell me about the piece of jewelry you would like to have reset and provide a link to a setting you love on Sequel. Does the diamond or gemstone you’d like to have reset have a special meaning to you? How do you think you would like to have it reset? Please let me know!

I will randomly choose a winner next Friday.

Good luck!

My husband and I had been dating for 4 years, before he had to move away for his first real job after school. I still had 2 years of college left and didn’t want to transfer schools. A couple weeks before he left, he bought me a beautiful aquamarine ring in a unique east/west setting that I still cherish to this day. At the time it was meant to serve as a reminder of how much he loved me and a promise that one day we would live together again. Luckily for us, that move only lasted a year before he was back home.I wore that ring everyday we were apart. Sadly the setting didn’t protect the stone very well, and it chipped slightly on one side. I’d love to have it reset with white gold all the way around to better protect it and hide that slight imperfection. It’s something that I want to keep in our family for many years to come and pass down to our kids one day..

My dad, who I am incredibly proud of, has recently lost a significant amount of weight in pursuit of bettering his health. He looks AMAZING, and so much so, that his wedding ring is now loose! I think this would be a great reminder to how far he has come to have this reset.

I would love to give this gift to my mom. She lost her sister to cancer a few years ago on her birthday. She has a few jewelry items of hers and I would love to get them set into one piece that she can wear all the time. Especially since her birthday is such a sad time to her now. This would give her a piece of my aunt that can be with her every time she wears it.

Really interesting site- I had not heard of it previously. We have a ring from my grandmother with lots of diamonds (we think our grandfather bought it for her in Iran in the 50’s) that we always wanted to turn into necklaces for the granddaughters. Julie, this post hits close to my heart. I also have lost my mom and now have her wedding ring in my possession. My husband and I considered using it for my ring before we got engaged, but I decided that it was just too special to take apart. I tied it to my bouquet on my wedding day instead. Now, a year later, it sits in my “special” box at home and I have not worn it. I have started to consider resetting ut more as it is such a shame that it just sits in the box untouched. I have thought that a simple necklace like this http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/round-cut-bezel-slide-pendant/your-center-stone-14k-white-gold-pendant/12r4pk?mode=prerequest might be lerfect, but I haven’t had the opportunity yet to just do it. This company, from your story, seems like it would take great care of my heirloom. It would mean so much to have that stone reset so I can enjoy it every day.

What a wonderful gift you were able to give your Mom! My Dad passed away 10 years, and he left his gold wedding band, with a small inset diamond, to me. Over the years I have thought about having the diamond reset into a necklace to symbolically wear my Dad close to my heart, where he is always. I think the diamond in his ring would look beautiful in a simple setting, like the Sequel Round Cut Solitaire Pendant: http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/round-cut-solitaire-pendant-5mm-gem/your-center-stone-14k-yellow-gold-pendant/12rvv7?mode=prerequest

I would love to reset my Mom’s engagement ring into something new for her. My parents divorce was really hard on her, but once the dust settled she came out so strong and so independent. She does things now that she NEVER would have done when they were married, for example, my 5 star resort loving Mama went camping and quading, and after knee surgery to boot!

I love this setting for her: http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/strong-knot-ring-4mm/your-center-stone-14k-yellow-gold-ring/12qx3k?mode=prerequest

I have a diamond pendant that was originally reset from my grandmother’s engagement ring, but the new setting is difficult to strong onto any chain because the holes for the chain are so small. I’d love to get the setting updated and possibly add a couple of heirloom peridot stones that I received from my Mother in Law for my wedding.

I’ve been thinking about doing this for a few years now – my husband passed away 5 years ago and my engagement ring is the most beautiful piece of jewelry I own. Of course it naturally holds sentimental value, but because of his death, I treasure it more than any other material item I own. I am toying with the idea of having all the stones (there’s a lot!) reset into a necklace, so I can hold his memory close to my heart. Whether I win the giveaway or not, thanks for introducing me to the Sequel website. I will be sure to check them out.

Hi Julie! I love your blog. It makes me excited to hopefully have a family as sweet as yours one day.

I have a ring that was my great grandma’s before she passed away. It has a decent sized pearl and three tiny diamonds. Unfortunately, part of the setting snapped off not long after I got it, leaving it unwearable.

I’m not sure if it would look right, but I really like this design: http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/triple-stone-ring/your-center-stone-14k-rose-gold-ring-with-aquamarine/12fsjw?mode=prerequest.

It sounds like she was a wonderfully generous and fabulous woman that had great beauty in her day. I would love to have this ring reset so I can wear it on special occasions. She had very petite fingers and I’m unable to wear it in it’s current state. Love, love the history of Great Aunt Cloicey and hearing about her stories and tribulations of Hollywood in the 40’s.

Every female 18th birthday that approached in my family my grandmother, or as I call her nana, would go pick them out a piece of jewelry as their present. The winter before my 18th my grandmother got diagnosed with lung cancer when she hadn’t smoked a day in her life. I was broken hearted. I still to this day, at 25 years old struggle with her being gone some days! It is definitely something that is hard especially since we were so close. Unfortunately, the ring is much too small for me and it’s yellow gold, while I prefer white. I have always wanted to do something with the ring, but I was never sure what to do or how to go about doing it. I love this look from Sequal (http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/side-stones-accent-ring/your-center-stone-sterling-silver-ring-with-diamond/138tn0?mode=prerequest) and love how simple they seem to make everything. I love the meaning behind it but it sits in a box. Would love to have it made into something as beautiful as she was.
