Since I didn’t get to bed until after midnight, waking up at 5 a.m. to work out simply wasn’t happening this morning.
I woke up at 7 a.m. instead, ate breakfast, blogged and worked through the morning until Sadie got so annoyed with me for not taking her out on her morning walk that I had to do something active with the little nugget.
Sadie expresses her annoyance with me by refusing to leave me alone. She sits on my lap as I type on the computer, rolls around on the floor by my desk chair or brings me every toy from her toy basket, hoping to coerce me into playtime.
How pathetic is she?
Not very pathetic, apparently, because her tactics worked like a charm on me.
Right before lunchtime, I grabbed my iPod and my gym shoes and headed outside with Sadie for a run.
I’ll be honest with you today, folks. It wasn’t a pretty run. My legs felt like lead, the weather was hotter than I expected (Florida has a bad habit of skipping spring and going directly to summer) and I couldn’t get myself into the zone.
I tried my best to get lost in the music blasting on my iPod from my Spring 2012 workout playlist which helped a little. I finally got into the running groove on the fourth mile of my five-mile run.
Better late than never, I suppose.
Sadie, on the other hand, was totally feelin’ it. She always runs a little bit in front of me, but today she was way ahead.
We ran along the same path that Ryan and I tackled every Saturday morning during the long runs of our Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon training back in the fall. Sadie’s memory was on point and she turned at all the right turns before I even started to veer that way.
She’s a smart little thing, despite my father’s opinion.
Even though my run today was crappy, I felt great once I arrived home, red-faced and sweaty.
A sub-par workout is better than nothin’, right?
Lunch
After a quick shower, I was more than ready for lunch.
Lunch was a bit random today because my cravings were all over the place.
I ended up eating a big bowl full of fresh spinach, roasted Brussels sprouts and cauliflower topped with two dippy eggs and served with a toasted whole wheat English muffin for dipping.
I roasted the vegetables in the oven for 25 minutes at 400 degrees after tossing them in a bit of olive oil and sprinkling them with seasoned salt.
The best part of this lunch was, without a doubt, the gooey yolks of the dippy eggs.
I was surprised that the yolks seemed to go a long way when it came to coating the vegetables. They really added a lot of flavor to the dish!
An apple was also consumed as the eggs were cooking.
Off to make myself a mug of tea before parking my butt back in front of the computer!

This is totally my kind of lunch! Roasting is one of my favorite simple ways to serve vegetables and I’m always craving eggs. I’ve also been known to snack on apples while cooking :).
As for the run, yes, sub-par is better than nothing. No matter how good/bad my workout is, I always make sure to be proud of myself for exercising in the first place.
Becca @ Blueberry Smiles says
Yum, if I worked from home that would be just the lunch I’d want today! And my dog does the same thing and doesn’t leave me alone if I’m late for his walk….he also puts on a really depressed look and gives me sad puppy eyes that make me melt.
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I had a bad run today too – just wasn’t feeling good – didn’t want to pass out on the treadmill. Sometimes it’s good to hear someone else had a bad run – happens to everyone! And it IS better than nothing.
Brittany says
I so dislike that feeling that your run could have been better once you get home. But still good on you for at least getting out there and doing it, regardless of whether or not it could have been better.
Jessie B. says
Your egg photo just helped me with my lunch decision! I would live to know how you make your dippy eggs – if I want yolks like that I have to poach the eggs.
peanutbutterfingers says
hi jessie! i spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and let it heat up until it’s pretty darn hot. then i add the eggs and flip them once the opaque part of the egg turns completely white. they cook REALLY fast after i flip them, so they’re usually done w/in a minute of being flipped! then i season them with salt and pepper. 🙂 i LOVE dippy eggs!
Sana says
Is it easier or harder to run with a dog?
peanutbutterfingers says
it’s kind of a pain to hold onto the leash, but i really like it for the most part. i know sadie is lovin’ life and she’s so darn speedy that it encourages me to run faster and push myself a bit. i think it really depends on the dog though. sadie (surprisingly) listens to me very well on our runs and doesn’t cause a lot of issues, making her a pretty good running buddy.
ashley says
Hi Julie! The second pic of Sadie today is hil-arious! My husband and I have a 3 yr old Vizsla named Penny – she does that same exact face with her upper lip caught in the bottom one! We call it “grammy lip” because she looks like a little old lady with no teeth! Love it! 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
oh my gosh, i LOVE it when it happens to sadie. it cracks me up! ryan and i always say sadie has so many looks… she can look like an adorable puppy one second and like an old man the next. 🙂 i love the name penny. so cute!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Your lunch looks delicious! 🙂 I’m planning on having breakfast for dinner tonight. Something about it is so comforting to me.
peanutbutterfingers says
that sounds like a fabulous idea. maybe i’ll do the same!
Shari says
Sadie is all over the place, I saw her over at Carrots n’ Cake telling Tina to blog about squirrels.
peanutbutterfingers says
she’s such a hussie. 🙂
Faith @ For the Health of It says
I so wish 5 miles in 47 minutes was subpar for me! I know the feeling, though, and it’s tough to get over, but at least it’s SOMETHING! Better to get a little exercise than none.
peanutbutterfingers says
that was the weird thing – my pace wasn’t that far off from my typical pace, but it just felt like i was working A LOT harder than usual to maintain it. eh!
Khushboo says
Dippy eggs is the best- I had the same for dinner but toast in lieu of the muffin and hummus with the veggies…hit the spot!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
The feeling after a run?! The BEST feeling in the world to me.
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
oh wowww Sadie’s face there is sooo adorable! Haha, but what’s new, right? 😉
At least you went out and ran, Julie! That’s what matters–so great job. 🙂
JB says
As someone w a lot of runner friends with dogs, you really should train Sadie better. Walk in front of your dog. Walking in front of your dog allows you to be seen as the pack leader. Conversely, if your dog controls you on the walk, he’s the pack leader. You should be the first one out the door and the first one in. Your dog should be beside or behind you during the walk.
Leader goes first. This can lead to many behavioral issues that some regard as a “Breed Trait” or “Personality” when actually it is just your dog in charge of its humans. A dog walking in front does not drain their mental energy. They are not relaxed and following, as they have a big responsibility to be leading the pack. This mental anguish can build up inside of a dog.
peanutbutterfingers says
thanks for sharing this, jb. definitely good food for thought.
Jen@FoodFamilyFitness says
Dippy eggs add so much flavor! One of my favorite meals is brown rice, roasted broccoli and a dippy egg on top…mix it all up and it’s delicious!
Aylin @ Glow Kitchen says
without music, i can’t even bring myself to run beyond 2 miles..
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I had a similar feeling run just the other day – maybe because it was the first hot day when I was running in the afternoon? I also don’t ever feel as well running when it’s anytime after the morning – I have to workout as soon as I get up before I eat anything.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
haha sadie reminds me a lot of our chocolate lab… she’s always dying for attention and won’t leave you alone until she gets it. 🙂 our yellow lab is my running partner. he always runs a little in front of me too, which i like because it keeps my pace up if i’m feeling lazy. glad you got in a run! something is always better than nothing, right? 😉
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
mmmm that lunch looks delicious! i love me some roasted vegetables… always forget about eggs though as a protein option. the dippy variety look delicious 🙂
Yellow Haired Girl says
Hey, you still had a better run than those people sitting on the couch!
Jen @ Whittle My Middle says
At least you got out and ran. Sometimes that’s all you need. Sadie looks adorable in those pics!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
All of my runs have been pretty sub-par recently, running and I are in a fight, which is not great since I have a half coming up in 2 weeks! but I’m always glad I ran!
peanutbutterfingers says
put running in its place! 🙂 good luck during your big race!
Amanda says
I’ve recently started training for a 10 mile race in May and I’m having so much trouble with my runs! I think it’s due to the fact that I’ve been loving a weight lifting class at my gym and my legs are way too fatigued. As much as I hate to, I really need to re-evaluate my non-running workouts if I want to be speedy and enjoy my runs! Did you cut back on leg workouts when training?
Jen says
Any chance you are training for the Broad Street Run? That’s the 10 miler that I am training for in May and am having the same issue with fatigued legs. I’m glad we still have over a month to train!
Amanda says
Yep that’s the one! I think I just need to shift my gym class based workouts that I’ve been doing over the winter and focus on running. Need to incorporate yoga and REST DAYS – the hardest thing for me!!
Jen says
That’s exactly what I need to do also. The rest days are killer…I always want to be doing something, but I know how important the rest is too.
Happy training!! 🙂
Brandi @ Faith Fitness and Laughter says
Oh running is such a process! You get out there and then suddenly you have bricks tied around your ankles. 😉 Then there are those days that you just fly!
Saddie is a cutie as always!
Great lunch!
Alexis says
I always have to defend how smart my dog is to my dad! That’s funny. And to my boyfriend a lot unfortunately. I constantly notice little things she does that put her “above average” on the dog IQ scale that no one else seems to see. Must be a mom thing. 🙂
Jasper @ crunchylittlebites says
you call them dippy eggs, too!
Serena says
Nothings better than the end of a hot run though right?
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
It’s already 80 here in Georgia, so I’m sure it’s even hotter down there!! I went for a walk this afternoon and was sweating … I couldn’t imagine running in the heat!
Jennifer says
Well I had a sub-par run this past Sunday. Actually, it felt worse than sub-par, it felt pitiful!
I was “out of my element” visiting inlaws, running a path unfamiliar, and had too much food from prior days! BUT, I perserveered and made it about 4 1/2 miles. I was just glad there were no witnesses! ha ha!
Candice says
Any run is a good run.. Great? not always! But you had a great time! My run this morning was about the same, I have been recovering from a foot injury and getting back into my running groove has been a bit challenging, I just felt heavy and lagging that “running drive” I usually have.
Can’t win them all I guess!
Yummy dippy eggs!
natalie @ southern fit foodie says
It was 84 here in west Tennessee yesterday! Crazy, but I’m thankful for some warm sunshine, especially for spring break next week!
I love adding eggs to pretty much any dish – they are so tasty.
Michelle says
Had a few sub par runs after kicking my own ass with new circuit workouts last week! loving the unusual ways to get more protein in to your diet link! 🙂
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I love eggs with veggies–soooo delicious!
And YES-any workout is better than no workout 😉
Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Munches & Moves says
My dad always makes comments about my fur baby being “special”, but it’s only because she doesn’t listen to him. She ALWAYS listens to her mamma. 🙂
Amy says
i hate when runs are ‘sub par’….i struggle through those big time! i wish every run felt great and my mind was in it…oh well. hopefully on today’s run ill be into it. the weather is SO perfect i have to get out!
Justine Duppong @ Life With Cheeseburgers says
I tend to not sleep well when I’m stressed out, so there are enough days when I don’t totally feel like working out (I’m in the process of applying for jobs now that I’m almost finished with school, and to top it off my husband and I might be moving out of state soon!).
I always remind myself that even working out for 15 minutes at a time is better than nothing–all of those little workouts add up, and consistency is key!
Kelly says
What does a typical day in the life of Sadie look like?
Ruthie Hart says
I don’t blame you for not waking up at 5am to workout…eeeek. I always make sure that if I stay up late (on a work night) I get at LEAST 7 hours of sleep or else I am worthless. My husband had to wake up at 6a yesterday morning to go on a business trip and the night before he asked me if I wanted to wake up with him and have breakfast. I love you honey but no!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Those pictures of Sadie are too stinken adorable! What a cute (and hilarious!) dog!
Natasha says
that lunch looks delicious! I’m also unable to resist when my dog wants to play 🙂
Lauren says
I know what you mean…there are just those days when your runs just don’t work right. Luckily, it seems to balance out because the next one should be fantastic! That lunch look delicious and much like my dinner last night. 🙂
Lauren says
I totally feel you on the run….it is humid beyond belief and warm here in Dallas!
Carrie @ Lift Eat Repeat says
<3 Dippy Eggs!
I hate it when I overcook them and their not as loose as I would like!
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
Awww I love the “clydesdale” pic of Sadie!
And my dinner looked a lot like your lunch…only my veggies were sauteed and I opted for a pear in lieu of an apple!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
My pug does the same sort of thing when he wants attention! Luckily, he’s a little guy so it doesn’t take much to tire him out!
Erica says
I always laugh out loud at the Sadie posts. Your narratives about her are just hilarious. And she’s so darn cute…
Our chocolate lab, Vernon, exhibits IDENTICAL behavior when he wants attention, especially the great toy round-up. I think his inner monologue is saying, “Oh so you won’t throw this one. Well how about the squirrrrrrelllll?” 🙂
Lindsay @ FuelMyFamily says
Theres nothing sub-par about completing a 5 mile run in my book! Especially at a rather speedy time.
Emily says
Hey, at least you got through your 5 miles! That’s definitely not sub-par.
But at least you had a delicious lunch to make up for it. You can never go wrong with english muffins!
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
I <3 dippy yolks! Yum! And yes any workout no matter how small is better than none at all 🙂
Maura @ My Healthy 'Ohana says
Sadie is so cute!! My Kona does the same thing when he gets antsy…brings all his toys, rests his head heavily onto my lap…it’s a good thing they’re so adorable 🙂
