Good morning! I missed you guys yesterday afternoon! I ended up getting tied up at the gym when a coworker called in sick, but I am back in action today. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Baby Boy-Themed Spin Class
My morning began on a very fun note thanks to a little cheesiness during my 6 a.m. spin class. On the Group Exercise Instructor Cheesiness Scale, I’m pretty sure I hit a 10 out of 10 this morning. I took the whole “themed ride” thing to the extreme and created a boy themed playlist to let my class know Ryan and I are expecting a baby boy!
Most people at my gym found out about my pregnancy weeks ago, as I wanted to keep my boss in the loop just in case nausea knocked me out and I needed a last-minute sub (which, thankfully, never happened), but they’ve been waiting to hear the sex of our baby for a few weeks. I wanted to do something creative to tell everyone and put together a totally cheesy playlist that incorporated songs with the word “boy” in the title. It took way longer than I would’ve thought to come up with nearly 60 minutes of boy-themed music (thank goodness for Google!), but my class really got into it, which made it more than worth it!
The song that was the biggest hit? “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” by Deniece Williams from the movie Footloose. It was an ‘80s-music party on the bike! The two songs that made people laugh were “My Boy Lollipop” and “Bad Boys” (the theme song from Cops). It was a rather ridiculous class, but we still got in a good workout and the energy in the room was very upbeat and fun, so I’ll consider it a success!
Breakfast
After class, I headed to a local coffee shop to pick up a decaf caramel latte before driving home. That coffee shop stop was apparently too long because nausea started to kick in, so I immediately inhaled two small bowls of Cheerios right when I walked in the door which helped a ton.
My “real” breakfast included a bowl of egg white oatmeal but this time I added Hershey’s cocoa powder and a spoonful of almond butter to the mix before digging in.
Looks like death, tastes delicious!
Now it’s time for me to turn right back around and drive to the gym again. I’m subbing for another instructor today and teaching a Spin + Sculpt class, so it’s time to boogie!
Question of the Morning
- Have you ever taken a “themed” group exercise class before? Any favorites?
I’ve done a Michael Jackson and ‘80s themed spin class before and they were a lot of fun! I’ve also heard of people doing holiday-themed classes, boy band-themed classes (<— sign me up!!!) and more!
Such a cute idea!
I haven’t taken a themed class. I am certified to teach group fitness but I can’t get into the classes anymore. Ever since having my son I use my workouts as my alone time. I will probably love them again one day. I actually really liked that class called Pound. The one with the drumsticks, I don’t know if you have heard of it. I thought it would be really cheesy but no!
Baby Boy – Beyonce and Sean Paul is another good one! That’s the first one I thought of. I think I listened to that way to much back in the day!
I would love a 50’s music playlist – I don’t know if it would be great for working out but I get excited everytime I hear “My Boyfriend’s Back and you’re gonna be in trouble…hey ya hey ya…”
What a great way to gender reveal your baby to your class! Definitely not something that everyone can do and it’s neat to hear you took advantage of your gym role to have a little fun 😉 I love Spin classes, but never taken one with a theme. I’d definitely be up for one though!
What a good idea! so cute 🙂
I love teaching “themed” playlist classes! I’ve used both Pink and Michael Jackson music themes. Working from the other perspective, I’ve also done a push-up themed class, where I’ve incorporated push-up variations in all possible tracks (chest, triceps, and shoulders) for BodyPump.
Such a creative way to let your class know!
What a fun idea to share the sex of the baby with your class!
When the Ravens were in the super bowl a few years ago, I did a Ravens/foot ball theme for my spin class. I also had trivia questions that I would ask during little breaks. It was a lot of fun and they loved it!
that sounds like so much fun! very creative! I love it when teachers do things like that to make a class more exciting!
haha i love the playlist- too cute!
Once the Total body Conditioning class seemed to be sponsored by a new television show about Vikings. He even dressed as a viking. It was… odd to have a Viking telling us to keep our backs straight. Your playlist sounds much sweeter!
I’ve never heard of a themed playlist for a class but that is such a cute idea! So darn cute!
I had the same nausea issues when I was pregnant (which resulted in CONSTANT eating), which quickly made this clip from The Office a favorite in our house:

The only themed classes I’ve been to at my gym were a Michael Jackson class and a 70s class. I would kill for a boy band themed spin class…that would be ridiculous and amazing.
Agreed!!!! I’m dying to teach one but I am not sure it would go over so well at my current gym!
Such a cute way to announce what you’re having!!! I haven’t taken any themed classes… I really need to give spinning another try. I’ve tried it twice, but that was years ago… it’s a kick your booty kind of workout haha because I was drenched in sweat and vowed never to go back – both times! Maybe I’ll give spinning another try soon!
My gym recently celebrated it’s 40th anniversary. Since they opened in the 70’s they had several different 70’s themed classes. I took spin that week, they instructor dressed up and all the music was from the 70’s, and there was a couple of those rotating colored light balls. It was definitely a lot of fun!
I was thinking of the Beyonce song “Lose My Breath” – it was just on Glee, it goes like “baby boyyy make me lose my breath”
That is absolutely hilarious!! I would LOVE to take one of your classes, I bet they are SO much fun!!
Aww, how fun! I think one of my spin instructors had some special Irish music thrown into one of her mixes for St. Patty’s day. Anything to keep it fresh!
You’ll love having a boy. They’re loads of fun. (Except getting peed on, but eventually that stops… for the most part.)
Love this idea!! So cute! I think I’ve done a Halloween-themed class before – costumes are a little difficult to work out in though 🙂 Ummm Spin + Sculpt sounds so awesome. Have a great St. Patty’s Day!
I love that idea! One of my favorite things about spin class is hearing new songs every week. This playlist sounds like so much fun, and such a cute idea to tell your class! Please keep sharing your lists 🙂
What about “Baby Boy” by Beyoncé circa 2003? That song immediately got stuck in my head when I read your playlist title. No complaining, though! Love it.
I used to teach a “One Hit Wonders” class and would give out miniature pieces of candy for whoever could yell out the artist first. Everyone always loved it! I taught a couple of other theme classes and was always surprised how long it would take to put the playlist together but it was always worth it!
Oh that’s so fun!! I want to do that!
What a fun class!! I would have loved to have been there!
bahah that is so cute to have the ‘boy’ themed spin class! I’ve only done the les mills classes so they never really stray into other types of music but that would be SO FUN!
When I got the text that my nephew was born, I was on a run and “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” was playing on my playlist!
Aw!! Too cool!
A fitness instructor at my gym does themed classes every few weeks and I love them! The most memorable one was Fifty Shades of Cycle where he played some dirtier songs (it’s ok it’s all college kids so it was funny!!!)
One of our Spin instructors loves to do themed classes. He recently did a Love/Hate ride for Valentine’s Day class where he played love songs for the first half of the class and breakup songs for the second. He always goes all out for Halloween though. He covers all the class windows to blackout the room then gives everyone glow necklaces to attach to our shoes. We ride to songs like Monster Mash, Zombie by the Cranberries, Monster by Skillet, etc. It’s always a blast!
Love the Love/Hate idea! Very creative!
Love the cheesiness!!! our class sounds like it would have been a blast! I’ve never done a themed spin class, though my instructor yesterday was playing some awesome 80’s jams! I think the closest to a theme day was 80’s Day @ the Barre. 🙂 It was fun – lots of people came in costume!
PS – your latte sounds heavenly right now!!
That playlist is just TOO.MUCH.FUN. And your breakfast actually sounds delicious!
Hi Julie…I love your blog, but wondering if you are going to turn it into a more “baby” themed blog now that you are pregnant? I enjoy allyour meal posts and fitness ones and hope you plan to keep it like that going forward…:):):)
Still planning to keep up with the usual fitness/food/random musings, too!! Since the blog primarily follows my life, there will definitely be some pregnancy/baby stuff popping up but I want to keep it true to its roots as well!
That was an adorable way to let your gym people know about your son. How sweet! And I’ll bet it was just as fun for them to hear as it was for you to make. What an exciting time. 🙂
What a creative idea! I have never taken a “themed” group class before, but they sound like fun!
what a cute idea!! 🙂
such a cute playlist!
What a cool way to reveal the gender of the baby to your class! I love it! it probably would have taken me some time to pick up on it though since I’m horrible with songs and song names!
That’s such a cute idea! I love the cheesiness – sounds like a fun class 🙂
That is the cutest idea for spin class! I heart every Footloose song. The footloose song is a regular on my workout playlist.
I was expecting to see “That Boy is Mine” by Brandy and Monica, but your choices were great!
Many, many congratulations once again. I’m so excited for you, Ryan, and Sadie!
It was a little slow for spinning— i searched for a remix with no luck!! Love that song!
That’s so cute! I’ve never taken a themed class but I LOVE the idea!
Kim
http://trendkeeper.me .. Nonchalantly green?! And how you can be featured!
This is the cutest idea! So creative of you! So, did you tell them before you started the workout or did they guess as you started playing the songs? Just wondering how you presented it to them. Too fun!
I told them there was a theme to today’s class when we got to “The Boy From New York City” and asked them to guess! Two of the women knew right away!
You’re too cute. I love seeing your excitement!
One of my yoga instructors is HUGE on themed classes. She’s a big Royals fan, and if the Royals are doing well, she’ll dedicate an entire class to them. Her last one included like seven different covers of Lorde’s song Royals =)
I would have never thought of the playlist idea – so funny! I laughed when I saw my boy lolly pop ☺
My barre class did a Disney themed class and I absolutely loved it 🙂
I’m a group fitness instructor as well, you put a lot more effort into your reveal than i did mine:) so creative!!
I had my class wear blue or pink and I had on a jacket covering my shirt. we took pictures then I took off my jacket to reveal my shirt that I had made said “It’s a BOY”
What a fun idea!! I’ve never taking a themed class, but they sound like a blast. I think it would keep me engaged, trying to guess the next song. 🙂
I would love to take a class with you. I love how much effort you seem to put into making each workout special. Good luck with all that class subbing. Sounds like a busy day!
What a great way to tell your class! I’ve never taken a themed class. It sounds like fun though 🙂
I love this!! So fun!! I’m a cycle instructor and we do themed rides weekly. If you go to cycle614.com, you can see all the classes listed for the week with the themes. My favorite so far has been my at pattys day ride. The music rocks and it made for a very energetic class this morning!! It was also fun because I researched artists with Irish decent (Rihanna, Beyoncé, nirvana for example) and my class loved it!!!
Such a cute idea!
I would love an oldies themed class!
This is too cute, Julie! Great job theming! 🙂 I will be wearing green socks to teach BODYPUMP tonight. Does that count?
