Since my taste buds typically desire something on the sweeter side in the morning, I was more than happy to prepare myself a savory breakfast for once.
I made myself a wafflewich by toasting two whole wheat waffles and topping them with muenster cheese, raspberry jelly and scrambled eggs.
A cup of strawberry Activia yogurt and two blueberry brown sugar Newtons fruit thins were also enjoyed.
Sadie was not impressed with my sharing skills this morning…
Better luck next time, kiddo.
And speaking of kiddos…
Baby Names
Yesterday I tweeted this random thought…
The tweets I received in response made me realize that this is a very common thing! What surprised me most was the amount of mothers or mothers-to-be who faced this same dilemma… and then gave birth to a baby of the opposite gender than the one for which they had plenty of names on tap!
Oddly enough, I have this totally weird feeling that Ryan and I will have a boy one day which seems to go along with this trend. (Rest assured that we will not be naming him Hawk.)
One of the baby girl names I absolutely loved for years was Reagan.
I had to let that one go when I married Ryan. Reagan Fagan just doesn’t work.
Ryan suggested keeping “Reagan” and adding “Megan,” so we’d have Reagan Megan Fagan.
Endearing, no?
Question of the Morning
- Do you have a lot of baby names on tap for one specific gender or are you evenly split? Or do you not even think about these things at all?

Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
Reagan is my top name choice for a girl, too…I’m so sad that it doesn’t go with your last name 🙁
Besides that, I really like traditional names or Biblical names: Rebecca, Joel, Sarah, Abigail, Adam, Anna and Luke.
Oh and I’ve loved the name Fallon, but our last name is Falls…Fallon Falls? Ehh.
Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) says
I’m fairly sure we’ll be trying to name our babies with Persian names, and although girl names are beautiful, Persian boy names don’t always work well in English speaking countries.
Poopak <- starts with poo
Pooya <- starts with poo
Shahab <- weird
Sina <- sounds like a girl name
Arya <- sounds like a girl name
Arash <- a rash. srsly?
Plus so many more unpronounceables. not excited for a boy baby partly for this reason! can you blame me?
Brittany *Sparkles* says
haha this is too funny! No those don’t really translate well… although babies do poop, but the child might not appreciate that much once he gets older!
Amelia says
That’s funny, my sister-in-law is due in Sept and the only girl name they have agreed on so far is Reagan! I like it too. They don’t know what they are having so they could run into the problem you mentioned.
We are also nowhere near ready for children but my husband and I are also having a hard time agreeing, his last name makes my favorite boy name impossible. Why do we marry these people that screw up our dream baby names????
Lauren says
I love looking at different baby names and the meanings! I have afew I’ve liked for years but I’m scared to share haha. 🙂
Tasha @ Voracious Eats says
That is such a delicious looking breakfast! I might need to copy you because it looks too tasty to pass up. I usually start my day with a smoothie, but lately I’ve been craving something more substantial.
Hmmm…I’m not even sure if I want kids but I do have names that I like for both boys and girls. My husband Cody thinks some of my names are way over the top extravagant (Theadora, for example!) but I love them.
Brittany *Sparkles* says
I have two full boy names picked out — Cayden Michael or Jonathan Bradley, but the girls names I change my mind on every year! I think this is in part because I keep meeting girls or seeing new characters on TV shows and it ruins some of the names for me haha.
Question – how many people’s names were inspired by a tv character, actor, actrice, etc?
Kathryn says
As a teacher, I associate names with my students. I don’t think I could name my child after a previous student. I have a boy and girl name picked out and so far I haven’t had any students with those names.
Amanda @ Running On Waffles says
I finally got brave enough to try the egg and jelly combination for dinner this week and I absolutely loved it! I wish I had had some meunster to throw on there, but I was out and I needed food pre-grocery store. So glad I finally gave your combo a shot…definitely a winner!
Regan says
Aw, when I saw your post I had to respond after seeing “Reagan”. I have only met one other Regan, and I hear more and more women are naming their little girls Regan. I have to say it’s a GOOD name, unique and has a nice ring to it lol. I may be a little biased, but I did go through that period where I hated my name because it was different…now I embrace it!
sara @ the foodie diaries says
Reagan Megan Fagan, It has quite the ring to it 😉 I’ve always loved names for girls that could be boys names (call me weird). I like the names Tyler and Riley, but for girls. I would never reverse the situation though and name my boy a girls name, like Leslie (no offense to the boy Leslie’s out there!!)
Ruthie Hart says
this cracks me up! I am one of 3 girls and a boy and I swear anytime us girls are together we talk about baby names and claim them!
Heather says
I have loads of boy names I like. We decided on one though finally! Tyler Jacob. Tyler because we like they could call me Ty or TJ. We picked Jacob for my boyfriend’s father, that’s his 1st name. My boyfriend just deeply respects his dad. We just thought of the perfect name for a girl. Charlie Nichole. Charlie because my dad’s name is Charles- he always wanted a boy to call Junior. But he had 2 girls. My dad asked me once, if I had a boy, would name him after him. I laugh and said no because I don’t like his name. But, for a girl it’s really cute. The middle name Nichole is perfect for us because my boyfriends name is Nicholas =]. I’ve always wanted a boy, but now that I could name my daughter not only after my father but her own father I want a girl.
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance says
Will & I have come up with loads of boy names, but no girls! The complete opposite haha
Kelly says
I am the exact opposite! I have tons of little boy names picked out and no little girl names that I like. The boy names I like are:
Nathan
Jack <——NUMBER ONE FAVE!
Trey
Ian
Adriane (the greenhorn) says
Hahaha, I actually like Reagan Megan Fagan (maybe not if it was *my* name thought…)
I love baby names and think about them all the time. Not that I’m pregnant, they’re just fun. Especially when you run across the terrible ones. One of my step-mom’s student’s name is Le-A. Her Mom came in for parent/teacher conference because she was mad they called her daughter “Leah” It should be pronounced like “Ludashay” with a soft “u” sound.
I have about 6 for each sex and my husband and I discuss them all the time 🙂 What can I say, I like to be prepared, lol.
theresa says
Somehow I heard this story! I think it was on the radio…
Nicole@FashionablyFitFemme says
haha, reagan fagan 🙂 i had to let go of the name “emma”….i’ve always loved it. my husbands niece & nephews call his mom “emma”….the oldest couldn’t pronounce grandma, and it stuck. still a little bitter….lol!
Lisa says
Love your post today. Not a mom yet, hope to one day. My list of names changes all the time, although I think I have more girl names than boy names. I’m Irish so Claire and Bridget (it is what my mom was going to be…. she ended up with Kathleen) are my top two choices. For a boy, well, I’m a huge Nicholas Sparks fan and after reading A Walk to Remember fell in love with the name Landon. Sometimes I’ll fall in love with a name and have a friend end up naming her child that. I went to college with a girl names Quinn and my best friend who also went to college with me named her daughter Quinn (100% Irish hubby) so that name has been ruled out. Quinn Fagan might work if you ever have a girl.
Jessica says
Ohhhh I have baby names for both a boy and a girl! It freaked out my husband but we are not planning on having kids for quite a few years…but it’s always fun to think of names. The names are sentimental too: for a girl, Aurelia Laura (Aurelia cause I love that name and Laura after my late mother), and Aiden Edward Mark (Aiden cause I love it, Edward was my grandfather and Mark my father).
Alison says
Hi Julie! May be a silly question – why do you always use Muenster Cheese? Is it less fat / better for you than other cheeses? Or is it a taste preference? I love me some cheese and I am always looking for the guilt free ways to add it!
Tracy @ Tracy's Treats says
I have TONS of girls’ names but not too many boys’ names! I think it may be because I only have sisters.
I personally love the idea of incorporating names from both sides of the family for a baby. I think when I have kids I will try to use names from both my family and my husband’s.
Nicole W. says
I must tell you I had the exact opposite when I was pregnant with my first child. We had boy names picked out and no girl names. We just couldn’t decide on a girl name we liked. Thankfully, the baby was a boy. Of course we had decided on the name Brock and then decided Lee for a middle name but when you say them together, Brock Lee, we went with Stephen for a middle name instead.
Caroline says
I have a completely different type of baby name dilemma! My favorite names for a boy and girl are Luke and Lorelei. Thanks to Gilmore Girls I can’t use both! I feel like I will have to chose a favorite between the two names. Also, for a potential boy name (for the currently non-existent baby we’re expecting) the BF and I are interested in using two names that are important to us, but that would make his first/middle initials B.J. Flipping the names won’t work. The BF is insistent we cannot to this to our potential future son!
Kari Burghardt says
Before my daughter was born I literally had a list of about 30 girl names that I liked and the boys name list had maybe 10! We ended up having a girl and it took us two days after she was born to finally make a decision. We had it narrowed down to 5 names and then the name we went with wasn’t even on the list!! Haha! Her name is Mollie and she is 16 months old now. <3
Janiek says
Although I like the name reagan I would never be able to name my child Reagan because all I could keep thinking is: That creepy girl in the exorcist is named Reagan… Who wants a child possesed by the devil right?! haha.
I have the exact same problem actually. Even though me having children is in the far far far future I def. have thought about it.
My most favourite name that, if I ever have a girl, is def. going to be her name, is Alyssa. Seccond would be Julia, third would be Chloe. (not that I plan on having 3 children, but it’s always good to have options right?!)
For boys however… I have no idea! It probably would be something simple like Ben, Paul or Ryan (Tell your hubby I like his name, because Ryan is actually a name I would like for my kid).
Oh well, luckily I won’t have to worry about this for another… say 10 years. haha.
Ashley says
This is so embarrassing, but every time I think of a cute baby name, I add it to a list that I keep on my phone. I’m still a few years away from kids, but I don’t want to be stumped for names when the time does come. 🙂
Whitney says
haha i’m so glad i’m not the only one!! right now i have 4 girl names and 1 boy name listed in my phone!
i even thought, what if someone looks at my phone and steals my baby names for their own!?!
girls are silly.
Sara says
We are due in March and anxiously awaiting the ultrasound to find out the gender. For a boy it will likely be Jackson Avery, a girl Olivia Faye…or who knows, in 6 months it could change! HA!
Holly says
I actually have three names for each gender! I think the boy names came easier for me, though. 🙂 (So excited to have boys some day!!!)
Kate says
I’ve always loved Jack for a boy, but my married name now is Ash. Jack Ash?! It would just be cruel. I’m saving it for a dog instead!
Alicia says
I have the exact same problem! Tweeted you that yesterday but I don’t think you follow me & I’m private. Every road trip we take, the hubs & I play the “what will we name our kids” game & always come up with girl names but struggle with boy names!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
This is hilarious. I have 2 girls names and 1 boy name picked out – and they’re a secret!
Jamie @ snacktress says
I’ve had a baby names list since I was a little girl! It’s changed quuuiiiiiite a bit since then, haha. I love really feminine names for girls – Isla, Emmeline, Camille, etc. And for boys I love Benjamin, Noah, Gavin, Lucas, aaand a million more.
HA at Reagan Megan Fagan 🙂
dana says
I have a few baby names that I like for both genders, but it seems that my husband and I only agree on boy names. He thinks all of my girl names are ugly, haha. I like traditional names for girls that can be shortened into cut nick names.
I worked with a woman who’s name was…Marybeth Butterworth.
dana says
oh, and I will also add that when I was growing up, my neighbors name was…Dick Johnson. What a name, huh?!
Michelle Fritzler says
HA HA at the Reagan Megan Fagan! My little 10 month old baby girls name is Emerson and I still don’t know where I got that name but older generation peeps (say 70 and over) love to ask me why I would name my baby girl after a masculine name! RUDE!! People should just keep their mouths shut. Everyone always wants to call her emmie too but we always call her Emerson. When she gets older she can decide if she wants to go by Emmie but for right now it’s Emerson.
I for sure thought we were going to have a boy but I should have known better since girls dominate both sides of our family. If we did have a little boy we would name him Hudson although one of my aquantinces just named her son Hudson but that has been my top pick name for as long as I can remember.
Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups says
Haha Reagan Fagan would just be mean! I definitely have some girl names I adore as well. I feel like once I’ll actually have to pick one (boy or girl), I’ll drive myself (and everyone around me) crazy trying to figure it out!
Kate says
I definitely have more girl names than boy. I kept a “name” journal for years just because I like names and would write down interesting ones I heard and liked. It came in really handy when I became pregnant.
However, I guess I buck the trend because I had a girl and we had way more girl names that we liked than boy! At first we thought it was a boy (this made me literally cry because I wanted a girl so much) and then it turned out to be a girl!
Thus, you never know!
Brittany says
I always think about this stuff! I have more girl names than boy names. I think it’s because I like names that are different and not so popular and girls names have more I think. Many boys names are common and there aren’t many that are different.
Hayley says
I’m so glad there are other girls out there brave enough to admit we have baby names picked out and are no where near pregnant :). Girls names are definetly easier. I have picked out one boy name. Which, ironically, could also be a girls name: Jesse. Go figure 🙂
Gina @ running to the kitchen says
I have a few names for each sex but the problem is agreeing on any with my husband. He’s Greek and his name is Ulysses. He’s obsessed with having a “unique” name (like his) and I’m all for unique names but his idea of unique is “Ajax” and “Pericles” I kid you not. Needless to say, we are NOT having kids anytime soon.
Michelle says
I’m exactly the same. I’m always coming up with girl names, but never any boys! I like Alexandra, Abigail, Charlotte, Ruth, Rosie and Poppy!
Amber K says
I actually have had three different combinations of boy’s names (first and middle) for years and I only recently became attached to a girl’s name I like. Although, my mind still seems to change about it. That would be pretty funny if I ended up having a girl first.
I have a niece named Reagan! But I agree, Reagan Fagen would not work, lol. Although any time I hear the name Reagan I automatically think of the president first, even with my niece being named that!
Heather B says
I don’t know Julie, Cravings, baby names!!?? Do I sense an announcement coming up? I know you say you aren’t pregnant but maybe you are preparing before you even realize it!! 🙂 🙂
Lauren says
My best friend is called McKenna Nicole, but she was going to be called Elise McKenna until her dad changed his mind. So I thought it would be really sweet to name my daughter Elise McKenna after her 🙂 Also, while my boyfriend and I are nowhere near close to thinking about children, the only thing he would say is, “I like the name Rose.” I think that’s the sweetest thing ever, so obviously we’re naming one of our future children Rose. 🙂 As for boys, I love the name Eli (can I have an Elise and an Eli?) and names with B in it, like Caleb and Gabriel.
Shari @ The Daily Dish says
Your breakfast sandwich looks delish! I love the sweet + savory morning combo. As for the baby names. I actually have names I like for both genders. Funny topic..especially from one non-pregnant girl to another. Girls think about these things. I think it’s totally normal.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I used to have names, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten more freaked out about the idea of having kids, so I tend to avoid these thoughts. I’d definitely avoid Megan though… rhyming first and last names are probably not the best idea. A guy name I love though is Harrison. Unfortunately it’s my older brother’s name and naming my own child Harrison might be a bit odd…
Lindsay@cupcakes to carrots says
that is so funny ryan thought of reagan megan fagan…my son’s last name is benton. when we were looking thru baby books during my pregnancy, we came across the name denton….and then fenton. so we joked about naming him denton fenton benton. we still giggle about that some days.
Lily says
My big concern about baby names is that I have a huge extended family and I am worried that someone will “steal” my baby names before I have children. I am thinking of setting up a baby name reserve system. Ex: When you said you liked the name Reagan, I thought, “yup, we already have one of those.”
I like Eleanor and Jackson. Eleanor is my paternal great-grandmother’s name and my dad lobbied (unsuccessfully) to name me Eleanor. I like names that can be shortened so I would call her Ellie or Nora. Jackson can be Jack, which I like and goes well with my last name.
Colleenzo says
That’s funny, I have a good friend named Eleanore Jackson!
Kate @ alittlelikeheaven says
Reagan megan fagan made me laugh out loud! I totally agree. My husband and I agree on lots of girls names and zero boys names!! There were also some names I had to take off the list after getting my new last name.
Hannah @PalmBeachRunner says
I’d say I have a few boy names and no girl ones yet. I’d be in trouble- but at least I would have 9 months to think about it 🙂
Jess @ Jess Go Bananas says
I am all for girl names! sadly the boy list is coming up short lol
