After reading my post title, who wants to join me for breakfast!?
Perhaps I can bribe you with a waffle?
To be honest, once I saw what my smoothie bowl looked like this morning, I really had no choice but to name it “barf bowl,” ‘cuz just look at this thing:
Despite its vomit-like appearance, I swear it tasted unbelievably good!
In the mix:
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 1/2 c. almond milk
- 1/2 c. canned pumpkin
- 2 pinches xanthan gum
- 1 large handful fresh spinach
- 1 packet (or scoop) caramel toffee fudge protein powder
I used a packet of Gold Standard 100% whey protein powder that I bought in a protein powder sampler pack good year or two ago (through Amazon.com, I believe) in my smoothie. I don’t know why it has taken me this long to try the caramel toffee fudge flavor because, in Fergie’s words, it was d-to-the-e-to-the-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!
The smoothie bowl was enjoyed alongside a toasted Van’s light waffle because I wanted something hot and carby.
This was a great breakfast that totally satisfied me after a schweaty workout.
Workout
My morning cardio session at the gym looked like this:
- 10 min. stair master
- 20 min. run/walk intervals (same as the first 20 min. of Tuesday’s workout)
- 20 min. elliptical
I followed it up with a 20 minute walk with Sadie and my friend Merri. I felt like our walk time was cut way too short this morning (silly work!), but fortunately Merri and I have plans to meet up for a longer walk tomorrow after boot camp!
And now it’s time to work. Today is one of those days when I really wish I had the opportunity to work from home because it is beautiful outside! I would totally lay in the backyard and read magazines work diligently if I had the option.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Sounds tasty! I love the Gold Standard products by Optimum Nutrition. Their casein protein is more dense than whey (I’m pretty sure all casein in general is) and it is sooo tasty! Makes the creamiest smoothies. Have an awesome day Julie!
peanutbutterfingers says
that’s what i usually use! i love it!
peanutbutterfingers says
well, i only started using it recently b/c i tried it (it’s ryan’s) and it was so creamy!
Carrie says
you are on a smoothie kick!!!! that waffle=PERFECT dippage!
Karen says
Eek, that really does look barfy! You should have poured some on the waffle 🙂
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
haha you’re right it doesn’t look too appetizing! 🙂
kristy @ kristyruns says
Smoothie bowls can look so nasty, but they taste so flipping good!
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
PS Julie check out my post today – I think you would appreciate the puppy pics! 🙂
Meg says
When I read the post title I’m not gonna lie…I didn’t know what to expect between you and your salmon-sickness, Sadie (maybe she had too much peanut butter?….wait…that’s not possible!) or maybe Ryan was hungover.
Glad it’s only a smoothie 😉
Enjoy your day!
peanutbutterfingers says
my blog is clearly all over the place!
katie says
I love ON casein chocolate protein powder, they have yummy powders for sure!
Your barf breakfast looks barflicious!!!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Hot and carby, hehe. I will get the opportunity to work from home once I put in two solid years here… unfortunately I just started in February. It seems like your work environment is a good one though (so jealous you get to wear jeans).
peanutbutterfingers says
sounds like a good thing to work towards!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
Hey – I clicked over to see the barf bowl — sometimes I think the same thing when I see my bowl of oatmeal or some of the stews/chilis I make!
Jenny @ loveeatrun says
I agree on the working from home!! I totally wish I could do it – although I’m not so sure how much work I would actually get done!
Kelly says
You ARE on a smoothie kick…must be the weather! It is hard for me to eat hot things when it is already 75 at 8:00am. I swear I will not complain all summer but really this weather is killing me. It can not be 90 degrees in April…it just can’t! 🙁
Chelsea J says
I don’t think it looks to bad, lol! When I saw it I was like…..hmmm maybe a smoothie for breakfast. Working from home does have some benefits! However, it far from sunny and warm here so I don’t spend to much time outside!
Gen says
hahahaha sometimes the ugliest food is what tastes the best! 😀
Heather (Heather's dish) says
That protein flavor does sound amazing…I bet you could find some pretty fun ways to use it in a million other things too!
Claire @ Un Bello Aperitivo says
I bet if you made some protein frosting with the toffee flavored protein powder and some pb, it would make an amazing dip for apples!
peanutbutterfingers says
GREAT idea!
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
It’s finally getting nice here, too! I had a meeting in another building this morning, and I purposefully took the long way back to the office so I could spend more time outside 🙂
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
I had a smoothie this morning too! I love this time of the year! 😀
Khushboo says
Puke never sounded so goood!

I love Van’s waffles! They are so good 🙂
Stephanie @ LiveCookLove says
My dad gets to work from home 1-2 days a week and I think that would be the PERFECT schedule! Go into the office a few days, work from home a few days… Ohh the life. Maybe one day 🙂
Amber K says
Some things just don’t photograph well even if they are delicious! I made some raw brownie bites yesterday and attempted to take pictures of them without them looking like little poo balls. It just isn’t possible, lol!
peanutbutterfingers says
“poo balls.” hahhahaa. that’s awesome.
kristina@beancakes says

Mary @ Bites and Bliss says

Julie, this is a random thanks:
Worst mood EVER + no motivation to workout/do anything after work + negative attitude = Yesterday for me
Until…
Enter: Exercise Mantra Solution
It was about 5 p.m. when a combination of mantras including: “one foot in front of the other”, “just get out the door…”, “you’re only one workout away from a good mood”, “just make yourself do it” (from my best friend), and “shelf your excuses” (from Shape Magazine) magically cued my hands to steer the wheel to the park rather than home.
So the thank you goes to you and the readers for bringing all of these mantras to the forefront of my unmotivated brain yesterday. After some mental tug-of-war, I ran my usual 3 mile loop with no music, my last choice for exercise clothing (ahem, no sports bra?!) and no pockets for my keys. I immediately felt fantastic post-run despite multiple drawbacks.
So I have a new mantra in light of this success: No matter what, a run is the best therapy.
Also, taking a break from the music/headphones was rejuvenating and even motivated me to work harder (i.e., uphill, speeding up on straightaways, etc.).
Thanks!!
peanutbutterfingers says
that is amazing. i’m so glad all of those positive thoughts worked for you! loving your new mantra, too!
Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy" Girl says
Is it weird that I think that smoothie bowl looks delicious?? Check out what I had for breakfast today. Doesn’t get much stranger 🙂
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
I couldn’t help but laugh at this title, barf is definitely one of my least favorite words! (along with moist…shudder)
I’m sure it tasted delicious though!
And update: I bought xantham gum the other day, tried it in my smoothie yesterday and it was great! Thanks so much for the suggestion and I plan to use it a whole lot more 🙂
Sana says
Bahahah barf bowl! Let’s be bff’s 🙂
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
That’s not barfy looking…it doesn’t have chunks in it. I apologize if that sentence made you want to barf a little, haha. The best smoothies always look the grossest, though!
Shannon says
The barf bowl actually sounds delicious. I love smoothies but I can never get them to taste quite how I want them too
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says

I want the barf bowl!! ahaha, that looks good to me! But probably only cuz I read the ingredients! I’m loving how your putting more pics of yourself in the morning! FUN STUFF! 🙂 hahah, this comment took like five minutes to type believe it or not! My dog is like scewed across me and lying in front of the labtop on my bread trying to lick my hand and then looking up and licking my face!! Has Sadie ever done that? ahahaha
If you want to see pics of MY dog Addie there are some right here!http://snackgirlgoeshealthy.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/decisions-decisions-dog-park/
She is cute as a button and has her daily peanut butter every morning!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
caramel protein powder!?!?!? That’s amazing! Sounds delicious. The other morning my brother in law was over and I was making a green monster and he told me it looked disgusting – until he tried it for himself!
gabriella @ embracement says
Your smoothies always sound delicious even if the color isn’t the best! I can’t wait til it warms up here and I craze anything but hot oatmeal
Fallon says
Gold Standard is one of my favorite whey proteins. I usually get the French Vanilla but never ventured out to the flavors. I’m glad you mentioned you purchased it at Amazon because now I will do my ordering through them. There prices are so much better then GNC and they have a variety of flavors to choose from.
What is the brand of whey you use when you use cake batter in your shakes? Gold Standard?
peanutbutterfingers says
for those, i actually use all the whey and purchased it through nutraplanet.com.
Allison @ Happy Tales says
I’m gonna have to try out Gold Standard. Oh, and your “barf bowl” is not scary at all!!! Sometimes the ugliest smoothies are the BEST ones!!!!!
Sable @ Squat Like a Lady says
I’ve been on a smoothie kick lately too and LOVE the idea of using a waffle for dipping!!!
I love frozen bananas in smoothies. They make ’em so much more ice-cream-like!
