I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Our fur baby is named Belle, and the first trick we really got down was “go to bed,” which is the command for her crate. We crate trained her and she LOVES her “bedroom.” We are still having issues with her on a leash, she’s 7 months old and couldn’t care less about what side she should be on and the idea of “heeling.”
Becky says
My parents and I just adopted a puppy, who is now 10 weeks old! She haven’t mastered any “tricks”, but she is doing awesome potty training (thankfully)!
Cristina says
My puppy’s first trick was “leave it.” 🙂
Jennifer says
The first trick we taught the dog was to sit. Later on, we would ask him “what do you want?” while holding a treat and taught him to make a response that sounds like “I want it”
Dana Pugsley says
Auggie’s first trick was to stand and beg while turning around in a circle. However, he still can not spin counterclockwise for some reason!
Melissa says
The first trick I ever taught my dog was to go into the kitchen for a pretzel!
Jen says
The first trick I taught Diesel was stay/freeze. He’s a hound and has the tendency to want to wander!
Gabbi Aragon says
We rescued our dog Tucker, and he already knew how to sit and shake, but we did manage to teach him to lay down as well. He refuses to learn “roll over” but he’s so well behaved that we can deal with that.
Maria B says
What was the first trick you taught your dog? Sit!
What is one trick your dog could never quite master? Roll over!
Jennifer says
The first trick was to sit (boring I know, but important)!
whitney says
My puppy’s first trick was sit. She is only 12 weeks old and only took her a couple days to learn. She hasn’t quite mastered stay yet. I’m still trying though!
Michelle says
First trick was sit. Both dogs had trouble with Shake.
Megan O'Brien says
When I was a kid, the first trick I taught my very first dog Sparkey, who we rescued with a broken leg, was to sit/stay and listen to me read to her! She refused to jump up on me even though I begged her to “Up” as a kid because she was my protector : )
Heather says
First trick was paw for both pups. Trick never mastered by one pup was sitting pretty and the other never really mastered fetch…
Ellen S says
My yorkie’s first trick was the sit! Now whenever she sits, she automatically raises a paw to shake, whether we tell her to or not; all for that treat 🙂
cori says
Louie cannot master the sit and stay! He just runs to us almost immediately.
Jena says
My dog Apollo’s first trick was ‘give paw.’ He has never been able to master ‘heel’ so instead we always walk him wearing a little haltee:)
Martin says
My dog’s first trick was take a bow:)
Katie says
My dog Brewer cannot master “roll over”, and the first trick I taught him after sit and stay was to ring a bell when he has to go outside!!
Molly says
Our goldendoodle, Murray, has mastered the sit but that is about all…he’s a crazy boy!! 😉
Sara says
Our dog’s first trick was “sit” and “down”. We have had her for just over 2 years now and those are still the only 2 tricks that she has really mastered. She’s too smart to put any effort into learning new tricks because she knows we are suckers and will always give her the treat anyway! 🙂
Gina says
I have a super cute golden doodle.
The first trick I taught my dog was the sit!
The one trick I could not get my dog to do was to roll over. She never wanted to.
Laur says
The first trick I taught my dog was “Sit”, of course. Then, “stay” which is definitely the most important. LOL
Lauryn says
My Havanese Miley’s first trick was sit and I still can’t get her to play dead! Working on it!
Michelle says
The first trick Gryffin learned was to sit and let us dry his beard after he drank water. An Italian spinone’s dripping beard is like wiping a slobbery paintbrush all over everything you own. 🙂
Valerie says
The first trick I taught our dawghter Lucy was to fetch. 5 years later, she still hasn’t learned stop barking on command. Oh well, she’s still perfect to us!
Lindsey says
My maltipoo, Spike, is a huge brat! I think the first thing he learned was to sit! But now he only does it when he knows he is getting a treat! But he is so cute its hard to resist that face…so he usually gets a treat!
stacey coffee says
Mikey’s 1st command was “Sit.” We are continuously working on “Heel,” which is usually more like, “No, Stop, Leave it.” He REALLY likes bunnies and squirrels!
Jaclyn says
My 3 year old pup sometimes needs reminded what NO means.
Tarah says
I taught my dog the good ol’ standard shake but now he can twirl around slowly like a ballerina! 🙂
Chrissy says
AJ’s first trick was probably to sit. Either that or to go get his toy. He still isn’t too good at bringing the toy back though, haha. 🙂
Kim @ FITsique says
Ohhhh I would LOVE this. I love that they look for corn, wheat, and soy free products too, and have an allergy list. I try really hard to only buy top quality foods for my pups with good human grade ingredients so to find a company that will support that too is great. The first thing we taught our pup was to “touch”. We use it so we can send him to places and then he will go and stay there!
Kimberly Ann says
The first trick we taught our puppy was to sit & shake! He can’t quite master anything else though haha. These look so cool!

My daughter taught our tea cup poodle sign language tricks. She motions all commands with her hands including set pretty, shake, circles, roll over, dance and so many more. It is the most amazing thing ever!
Joy says
Dobby’s first trick was pound it (high 5) we are STILL working on back up (he’s 5)
Pam Cook says
We taught Bailey to sit and wait until we tell her its ok to get the treat on the floor. She will never learn to shake “hands”.
Julie says
We are big fans of “high five” around here. Parker will high five pretty much anything (feet, butts, faces…) and it makes for a fun party trick. 🙂
Becca says
Tebow first learned to “stay”, but he just can’t seem to master “Tebowing”, which we define as bowing with his head down. So much for the namesake! At least he’s cute 🙂
Holly says
First trick my dog learned was to sit of course. I still can’t get her to not pull her leash, she doesn’t understand the concept of fetch, she just won’t go run after a ball if I throw it. So fetch isn’t her thing. She’s a couch dog!
Monica says
Sit was her first, high five is our favorite, roll over she won’t do.
Whitney says
We first taught Bella to sit and she never got roll over. She would love a Bark Box…especially if it has a tennis ball in it 🙂
Kristi says
Besides the usual tricks of sit and shake hands…we also taught my dog to do the conga line. One thing I’ve tried but always got blank stares instead is the *bang* and play dead trick. Just won’t ever happen.
Lauren says
We have a new lab baby so we are just working on sit right now. But she’s doing great! 🙂
Sara says
The first trick I taught my Apolo was “Bang!” where I “shoot” him and he lays on the ground on his side. The one he could never get was to bow with his front legs on the ground and butt in the air. I tried so many times!!
Kate says
Queenie has mastered “wait” (she will “wait” anywhere until I say “okay” and then she RUNS). She’s great at that one….but I can’t seem to teach her ANYTHING else!
Meghan says
Ziggy’s very first “trick” was picking his name! We were between two names for him: Ziggy and Quinn. Since we liked both, we wrote each name on a piece of paper and tossed them in the grass, and the one he went to first would be his name. Obviously, he picked Ziggy, and it couldn’t be more suiting for the little guy.
The trick he can’t quite master is “stay.” He’ll do it for a few seconds, then bounce off. I guess in all fairness, I never tell him how long to stay! 🙂
Kelly Hietpas says
First trick I taught my dog Winter was Sit! She could never quite master “roll over” she would do all her other tricks before she would roll over, and then sometimes she would just stare at you and just smile 🙂
Krista says
My vizsla is almost 11 months. We taught her to sit first which she got quickly. We are still trying to master the come command!
tristan says
We just adopted a 1 1/2 mutt from the animal protection league a month ago! she was pretty well trained but my boyfriends and i have been trying constantly to get her to learn to roll over! its a lot harder than i would have thought! maybe some treats from bark box would entice her haha 🙂
Shanelle says
The first trick Clarabelle learned was sit… She’s a basset hound so it takes her a long time to learn tricks. We’re trying to teach her to roll over and she’s just not getting it 🙂
