I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Our dog’s first “big” trick was the “bang bang” trick. We would act like we’re shooting her and she would fall to the floor on her side.
The trick that she never quite mastered was “roll over” – she just tends to lay on her side and go around in circles.
Whether she does a trick right or wrong, we still love her to death:)

We just adopted a 1 1/2 mutt from the animal protection league a month ago! she was pretty well trained but my boyfriend and i have been trying constantly to get her to learn to roll over! its a lot harder than i would have thought! maybe some treats from bark box would entice her haha

I have a 15 wk old Great Dane puppy and his first trick was “paw”! We think he picked up quicker than “sit” because his paws are absolutely humongous.
Courtney Sheldon says
Gus’s first trick was to sit and lay down! He is only 16 weeks old and he is struggling with stay and come, but I’m sure maturity will help!
Megan K says
Our puppy is only 4 months old so the only trick she’s got down is sit! Would love to have a BarkBox to treat her with!
Stephanie says
Chewie, my pug, learned to sit, and while he does know how to lie down, he refuses to do it unless he feels like it. He’s stubborn so we quickly gave up on teaching him tricks.
Sally G. says
The first trick I taught our rescued horrible hound that I’m not sure he knew before was to “touch” – I hold out a hand, say “touch,” and he has to come over and touch his nose to my palm. The one trick that Abe hasn’t ever gotten is rolling over. After weeks of work, he’ll roll over onto his back so I can scratch his belly, but he won’t roll all the way over to his other side. He used to absolutely hate being on his back at all, so at least it’s progress!
Nancy says
Alfie has always been a fast learner, so I taught him “sit” the very first day we brought him home at 12 weeks (we were his THIRD home!). He’s always had a bit of a bossy attidute, and perhaps that’s why he’s been shuffeled around?
He’s going on 5 years old in October (omg getting grey hairs already. Little old man!), but we have kept him in obedience school for 3 out of the 5 years, and he has never mastered “stand”. Not that it truly matters, because he’s got all the other ones down pat. That is, until he sees someone other than Scott & I. Then he loses his sh&t and freaks out at the other person lol 🙁
Denyne says
I have two babies, that I taught to sit, of course they caught on to that. And I think that’s all they listen too. Stay and Speak, never work. But they are the best.
Amy says
I can’t exactly answer the question directly because I haven’t taught my dog any tricks in the two years I have had her, lol. She will give up on just about any training session because she would rather have you pet her. I, admittedly, am a sucker for that nose and those eyes, so I give in too. Lucky for me, when I adopted her, she already knew the basics: sit, stay, come, etc. I have kind of taught her to lay down, but that one is day-to-day. I hope that doesn’t disqualify me from the bark box! 🙂
In other news, that Sadie’s puppy eyes are the cutest thing I’ve seen all day (well, next to my Libby’s puppy eyes, of course).
Madison says
My dog Beau is a boxer/lab mix, and he learned how to shake when he was about 10 weeks old. It was the cutest thing when he was so tiny!! 🙂
Erin says
The first thing Bojangles (Bo) ever learned was fetch! It’s his favorite game to this day. He still hasn’t mastered the “stay” command though. Way too much of a clinger for that!
Lyndsey says
I would love to try BarkBox! My dog, Riley, learned how to play dead and she has never been able to master rolling over!
Michelle says
The first trick I taught my Boston terrier Chloe was sit (pretty standard).
We tried to teach her the “teddy bear”, where they kind of squat on their hindquarters with their body erect, but she never could balance.
Love this post!!
Torie says
My sweet Reggie’s first trick was sit and high five! He’s a smart pup but somehow has never quite caught on to laying down on command *sigh*
Debbie (accidently delish) says
We rescued our dog from the pound when she was 2 and I was so lucky that she came “pre-trained”. She can shake, sit, high five, the works. HOWEVER we never mastered roll over. She completes me though and I got her in a point in my life where I had just lost my best friend to a motorcycle accident, and she just filled that hole in my heart. I can not imagine my life with out her!
Meagan says
My dog, Fool first learned to roll over!!! So good at it! He never could learn to stay LOL . Funny how they sometimes just want to do their own thing! 😛
Janelle says
When I got my dog, he already knew sit & shake. The first trick I taught him was “stay.” We then worked on “down” (lay down). He can’t quite master “roll over” or “speak.”
Lisa says
He’s pretty good at most tricks, but he’s not very good at stay or coming when called. He’s a little stubborn!
April@CarolinaBelle.net says
We just picked up our sweet girl two weeks ago. Her first trick is to “find her baby” – a stuffed animal that she is attached to. We are trying to teach fetch with it. She can’t get “sit”, since she was hit by a car before we adopted her she has a lot of hip issues and it takes her a great deal of effort to sit. I wish she could sit because it would be easier to get her harness on and off when we come in for walks. But she will lay down with no problem!
Kristin says
When I adopted Cinnamon, he already knew sit, stay and lie down. So I was pretty lucky! He is smart though so I wanted to teach him more…the first trick I actually taught him was rollover. Now when he wants a treat, he does his whole repoitre thinking “one of these tricks is bound to get me that treat!” 🙂
Jess says
Calie’s first trick was sit. I’d love to get her to roll over on command but she just doesn’t seem to catch on to that one.
She loves her Bark Box and I’d love to win the giveaway to get one for my future brother & sister-in-law’s dogs.
Lolly says
My pups, Suzanne and Anderson, are 2.5 years old. I got them when they were 8 weeks old. The learned “sit” and “let’s go out” fairly quickly, but to this day we cannot master a “shake”. They just get too excited and can’t control themselves.
They are spoiled rotten, and I love them to pieces. My babies….
Lolly
Meredith Tucker says
The first trick I taught my dogs was to sit! They never mastered the “stay off the couch!” Trick! Ha.
Nicole W. says
The first trick we always seem to teach our dogs is to sit, followed by shaking, then laying down. The one that is the trickiest for our dogs is roll over. They seem to get too excited and just spin around, thinking they actually rolled over.
Amy @ fitnessmeetsfrosting says
My dog’s first trick was “sit.” I know, so typical. She actually learned every trick we taught her, HOWEVER the one “trick” we cannot get her to do is STOP eating garbage! Lol so disgusting.
Molly P says
the first trick Bruno learned was to sit…and he hasn’t learned too many more since then!
Jessica says
We just got our puppy a month and a half ago, so we’ve mastered sit and stay, come and shake are next!
Kelly says
My Buddys first trick was roll over, then we tried jumping through a hoop (when he was small enough to go thought it) instead he kept close lining himself!
Hillary B. says
Our dog’s first trick was to sit. My favorite trick my husband taught him is to open the fridge using a towel wrapped around the handle. He can even pull a drink out!
Sara says
This is the best giveaway! I’ve SO been wanting to subscribe for a long time!
The first “trick” I taught Rusty was to heel and walk nicely on a leash. He was a rescue that had no prior training and pulled like a freaking sled dog! I used the clicker training method and brought little pieces of hot dog (his favorite). He is an all star walker now!
The trick he has trouble with is high five, especially when he is really excited. He’ll throw one paw at me and then the other paw over and over until I stop him and calm him down. He looks like a little party animal! It’s actually pretty cute 🙂
Kelly says
The only trick my dog managed to learn is to sit…and he doesn’t even do that all the time! He is one stubborn dog!
MW says
My dog Summer loves those cheese treats.
She learned sit within the first hour we got her home. She can’t get roll over, but she’s so cute, I’ll let it slide.
Jill says
We taught our dog how to bring us his leash before we go on walks – he caught on quick, but still can’t master rolling over!
Allison says
I have a 10 week old puppy and she just mastered how to shake today! I was one proud mama 🙂 I think I will teach her how to nose bump next.
Lauren says
Can’t wait to teach my soon to be lab puppy some tricks!!
Dana L says
The first trick my dog ever learned was sit – but that was a big accomplishment. We adopted him and the family before us spoke another language so we had to reteach everything he already knew in English!
Gabby says
I taught my dog to sit and stay…that’s about all she can master right now haha
Fiona MacDonald says
Ohh Man!! This giveaway is RIGHT up my alley! I’ve been trying to convince my husband to splurge on a BarkBox Since I first heard of them
Our dog Hank is a Boxer/American bulldog-80 solid pounds of pure love. We first taught him how to ‘shake a paw’ which then turned into ‘high five!’ (say it in the Borat voice and it is even funnier)
He is the WORST (due to his breed) at FETCH!!!! He literally steals the ball and then decides to lie down and chew on it until it is destroyed…..
Great giveaway!!! And finally one I can enter (yaaah Canada!)
Courtney Fragola says
The first trick we taught our pup Hope was sit. She master it and has a little repertoire now!
But- she has not mastered “come.” Not sure if that will ever happen!!
Sarah R says
My pup used to play dead with the command “bang!”, but now he gets so excited and overwhelmed over the impending treat that it just sends him in a tizzy of circular spins.. sooo I don’t think we quite mastered that one.
Amy says
I don’t think it was the first trick, but “bang” is always a show stopper 🙂
Katie M says
We taught our English bulldog how to sit and shake – nothing crazy but still worth a treat! He looks almost identical to the bulldog in the Bark Box ad above!
Salina says
I have three dogs. The youngest ones first trick was “high five” where she jumped up and gave us an actual high five. One that she cannot seem to get is “speak!”
Jessica says
We are the new owners of a Doberman named Titan:) We have mastered Sit & daily work on Come! At 6. Months old, he is the funniest & most intelligent dog I have ever met! I am biased☺️☺️☺️
Katharine says
Hey Julie! I love this giveaway! I have a sweet and wonderful golden retriever who is one year old. The first trick we taught her was sit but she never quite mastered roll over. 🙂
Kc says
My 10 month old “puppy” mastered sitting right away. However, she is resisting “leave it”. most of the time she looks you in the eye with glee and takes off and stores her stolen treasures under the couch. She is a hoarder, she needs therapy. I love her all the same:)
Brooke@SweetnSweaty says
My fur babies mastered the “trick” of training me:) oops! #mustlovedogs
Liz says
First trick darwin learned was paw. We have been working on rolling over and he usually ends up break dancing instead
Stacie says
Oh gosh, our dog would love this! I’ve been very interested in these, but didn’t want to pay the subscription price and then not have our dog like it. This would be a great way to sample the product! The first trick she learned was “shake” (like to shake hands with someone). Dogs are the best and truly bring endless joy and love into this world!
Thanks to you and BarkBox for the giveaway 🙂
