I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Our dog knew “sit” almost immediately as a puppy, but as a three year old lab still doesn’t “come here” unless he reeeeeeally wants to – selective hearing like his people mom! 🙂
Abbie says
One of our dogs would roll over ninja style, like super fast. Now, whenever we say “lay down” she immediately throws herself to the ground and rolls over in a split second. I swear sometimes she rolls in the air before even touching the ground. Thx for the giveaway!
Heather Peyatt says
Woohoo :). My GSP Libby would LOVE this!! Libby’s first trick I taught her was how to shake. The one trick I could never quite figure out to do with her is roll over. I have been reading your blog for a few years now! I love it, especially because of Sadie. She’s soooo cute!!
Kimberly H says
My dog could never learn to roll over. She would flip out anytime we tried, but she loves her belly rubbed!
Elle Sythd says
The first trick my Sadie learned was to sit. The one trick she never quite learned was to fetch. 😀
Allie says
i taught my pup to sit haha nothing special!
Trisha H says
The first trick we taught Barley was to “be a gentleman” aka let others in the door before him. He still hasn’t quite mastered roll over.
KELLYE says
We taught our dog sit, shake, and all that but I was so excited when my husband taught her high five and the difference between that and shake. My little brother taught her “green” which in his mind meant lay down so he could confuse us all when we tried to make her lay down….so rude!
Gabby says
I’ll answer both!! Gracie’s first trick was to sit and man she sure can sit pretty now! She cannot, however, for the life of her figure out how to roll over. We try almost once a month and it never fails that she just gets frustrated and ends up chasing her tail. ha!
Grace Holloway says
We taught out pup Guinness how to “pound it” instead of shake ….basically the same move, but I think he feels like an extra cool pooch when he does it. 🙂
Bianca says
Dog obsession is one of the reasons I follow your blog 🙂 I’m crazy abouty 2 yr old German Shepherd, Brock. He’s super smart and ridiculously cuddly for a big “vicious” dog! We took him to puppy school which was more for mommy than doggy because I had no idea how to train a dog. My husband on the other hand would sneak in training time and was able to teach how to speak. We can even put our finger over our mouth and say “shhhhh” and he’ll speak softer. Love this dog! The one trick he never could master was rollover. At least not on command. His sleeping position of preference is on his back as if he’s preparing to make a doggie snow angel LOL. Thanks for sharing Barch Box. Looks like Brock will be getting spoiled very soon.
Rachel says
The coolest trick my dog knows is roll over. He’s a smart little guy 🙂
Liz says
First trick was sit and he could never master stay!
Ally says
My dog is great with sit and lie down but only if food is involved.
Sara M. says
The first trick my dog mastered was sit…she knows many more now and when she spots something she wants she goes through her whole routine to see if something will impress us enough to give her whatever she wants! She usually gets whatever it is so I guess she has us well trained ; )
Maggie says
The first trick my dog masters was sit!
sheila joyce says
The trick my dog cannot seem to master is “stay”. She with stay until I’m out of sight and then she takes off to find me! Sweet dog 🙂
Katie says
The first trick my sweet german-shep puppy, Bentley, learned was sit and shake.. still haven’t quite got the roll over trick. But he’s so stinking cute that I don’t care 🙂 Bentley would love to win the bark box giveaway!!
Maggie says
My dog could not master stay, especially when a treat is around!
Tara @ Rovin' Rambler says
My dog can balance a treat on his nose and won’t eat it until you give permission. Considering how hyper he was as a young dog, he turned out quite well trained!
Megan says
We have a 1 year old Shepard Mix named Shiner. She is our love! Her first trick was to, “howl”. Instead of barking we taught her to howl. It is the CUTEST thing! It is like she is having a conversation with us! She still has not mastered the “walk” yet… She gets all crazy on a leash and has not quite figured out that she is supposed to walk in a straight line, or on the sidewalk when we go on walks. She is a bit, a mess. But we LOVE her so much!!
Rose says
I recently got a four year old shelter dog so tricks are out of the question. Can’t teach an old dog new tricks, right 😉 but she more than makes up for it with her sweet personality.
Linda @ running4two says
LOVE that you adopted a shelter dog! 🙂
Kelsey Jones says
I’ve taught our dogs to shake, roll over, sit, and stay. They can also do Speak, but I don’t want them to think it’s cool to bark all the time, ha.
Jenny says
My little Barkley goes crazy over Barkbox! The first trick he mastered was rollover. I’m not sure why it was so easy for him but he master it right away. The trick he can’t quite master is high five. He likes to give high 10 instead 🙂
Krissy says
Oh I would love love love to try this box! We are bringing home our puppy in two weeks and this would be perfect! I can’t fully answer your questions, but we hope the pup trains easily and responds to at least the basics of sit, stay, heal, etc.
Kayla says
First trick my dog learned was to give five. (Popcorn was a great bribe). She can also sit and lay down. The other two dogs however hate tricks and just look at us funny when we try to teach em.
Cassandra says
My dog Gryffin first mastered how to sit and stay but ‘quiet’ is still something we have not mastered. He would love Bark Box!
Linda @ running4two says
My dog learned sit very quickly (as long as I was holding a treat)!
She still hasn’t learned the whole “loose leash” walking thing. :-/
Anna says
We’ve tried teaching Chewie to crawl and he can never quite get the hang of it! He’s too impatient!
Lauren says
My pup caught on to sit and down pretty quick, but can’t for the life of her figure out how to roll over!
Lili says
First trick we taught both of our dogs is sit (of course!).
They both never got the hang of rolling over. They just stare at me like I’m crazy. Haha. Gotta love them.
Jenna says
The first trick we taught Roxie was to sit. She never mastered “speak”. We try but she just looks at us and turns her head from side to side
Lara ZP says
the first thing we taught our Teddy was to sit…he’s just now mastering lay down and confuses it with “paw”
Mallory M says
The first trick my pup, Maggie, learned was to sit. We’ve just mastered the “shake” though, so we’re making progress! 🙂
Meghan F says
I taught my chocolate lab, Clarence, how to lay down. I have not owned a dog before him, so I was quite impressed with myself. Since I had realized I was a master dog trainer after the whole down trick, I tried “clean up!” I tried to teach Clarence how to put his toys in his toy bin when he was done. Ha! Obviously he doesn’t do that.
Jenn says
The first trick we taught Brewster was to sit, which was fairly easy.
However, after 5 years, we are still working on frisbee, which can be summed up in this short video I recently made: Brew learning Frisbee
Marta S. says
I wouldn’t quite call this a trick. But when i was first got my dog Abby 13 years ago (can’t believe its been that long) I used to try to race her and would ALWAYS start the “race” with 3..2..1 and eventually she would just go crazy with excitement and ready to run after only hearing the number 3. I taught her some very weird things by accident haha. The trick she never could master was playing dead. She never quite understood how to do it! But I would love for her to win this because she deserves the absolute best! I love her to death and love to spoil her!
Alissa says
The first trick my dog, Nala, mastered was high-five! She never mastered roll over I still try but don’t think she’ll ever get it 🙂
taya says
Gibbs first trick was to sit. And the one trick he can’t master is speak.

We taught our dog Maddie “paw.” We now have an almost 2 year old son but always joke that Maddie is our first born. Dogs are the bestest! Lol
Georgina says
One of the first tricks my pug learned in puppy class was “watch me”…he is 5 now and will still look at me when I ask him to! Henry still hasn’t mastered “down” though- every time I ask him to he just sits (and when I ask him to sit he gives me a typical confused pug head tilt)!
Alexis says
What a great giveaway! My dog Coco’s first trick was sit and roll over. He has never mastered “paw”, but we are working on it. Sadie is adorable by the way! Love seeing pics of her on your blog.
Christine says
I first taught my dog how to sit and shake his paw in our hand. He still can’t roll over!
Amanda says
The first trick I taught my dog was Bang. It’s where you make your hands look like a gun, yell Bang and she plays dead. So cute 🙂
Jean B. says
We taught out dog Stay. He does it before eating every time!
Denise Pitre says
Ginger is my rescued Pit Bull and she learned shake and waive pretty quick but my favorite is when I ask her to show me her belly and she rolls on her back for belly rubs. Comes in handy now that she is a therapy dog and does the children’s reading program at the library. I never could get her to ride a skateboard on her own or surf, that’s what we do in Southern California.
Sharon Howard says
Our English Bull dog “Sadie” learned to dance for treats as her fist trick. She will dance on her back two legs straight up in the air but we have tried to teach her to roll over and she will not do it at all.
Chelsea says
The first trick we taught our bulldog, Biggie, was to sit! He still hasn’t mastered how to ‘speak’, he just kind of snorts!
Sarah says
This is such a great giveaway! I have been wanting to try this for so long!
The first trick our now 1.5 year old lab Oakley learned was sit, but now the coolest trick he does is shake and high five! Anytime you ask him to do anything but sit he swats a paw at you to high five! If he doesn’t get a treat from that he tries the other paw and then goes through all his other tricks until he get to the trick you wanted in the first place 🙂 he still has not mastered rolling over…anytime my husband tries to “encourage” him to roll over he starts flopping around like a fish out of water! Hopefully he will get the hang of that as he gets older!
