I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

The first trick I taught Sophie was to roll over. All that puppy energy! Next she would shake hands, first the right then the left. She could not sit up so she would dance and give me a high five with both paws. Now she does all the tricks together. Roll over, shake both paws, dance, and high five! Always feel like she earns 5 cookies!

The first trick I taught my little dachshund was to sit. Unfortunately, he sits but refuses to stay!
Jill says
Rocco’s first trick was “sit” and he is very good at it :). He does, however, refuse to roll over. In fact, he is 4 years old and he has yet to ever roll onto his back independently.
Claire says
Maggie seems petrified to roll over!
Elissa says
Evie doesn’t do tricks on command but she can walk on her hind legs for an impressive amount of time! It’s the cutest ever.

My frenchies first trick was sit and she was never able to master stay. She would love a bark box!!!
Linda Thomas says
The first (and only) trick my dog has mastered is “sit” one thing that we tried and failed at is shaking hands.
lindsay w says
the first trick we taught my Watson was to shake–it took awhile, but I think it helped cement the concept of learning into his doggy brain! he has since picked up “lie down”, “roll over”, “other paw”, “high five”, “twirl” “sit-stay-ok” to only eat his food when we say so, and “put your leash on” where he pokes his nose through the leash loop and wriggles it down onto his neck
Kathy says
Lola’s first trick was sit and then shake. She now automatically starts offering her paw to shake when she sits and think she’s going to get a treat!
I tried to get her to balance a treat on her nose, but she won’t sit still long enough for it
Meredith F. says
Love barkbox!! We got our dog Sophie from a rescue when she was just 7.5 weeks and my husband loves that she picked up “hug” pretty quickly. We took her for 24 weeks of training and although she got “crawl” down pretty well…it was only if treats were in the immediate vicinity 😉
Shelley says
Roman first learned to sit, and quickly learned that if he stands up and sits on his booty like a prairie dog, he would get an extra treat. 🙂 He completely doesn’t understand shake. When I try, he looks at me and snatches his paw away.
KA says
I first taught my dog to sit. My favorite trick is “kiss.” She never could master catch though 🙂
Gwen B. says
Jazz’s first trick was to “back up” because she is obsessed with the ball and whenever she would drop the ball for you to throw it the minute you reached for it she would grab it. So I taught her to back up before I would pick up the ball and then throw it for her. Why she learned this so quickly but still struggles to roll over is beyond me. : )
Lisa says
My pup’s first trick was to sit and then lay. She is super smart, but I have never been able to teach her to roll over or play dead.
Lisa Watkins says
Does sit count as a trick? 🙂 I did teach her to prop up on her back legs and beg on command.
I think my dog is much too lazy to ever learn something like play dead. We will just focus on sit, stay and come.
Kaisa Fiedler says
My dog learned sit first, but then we tried to teach shake. For the life of me I could not teach her to shake! Finally after 8 months of attempting (while she learned tons of other new tricks), I asked her to just give me her paw – and BAM! It clicked. She’ll do it every time now as long as we don’t use the word “shake”! haha no idea there..
Samantha Scott says
What was the first trick you taught your dog? To sit!!!
What is one trick your dog could never quite master? To not bark at every single knock on the door. Oops! 🙂
Kelsey O. says
My Newfoundland Bruin mastered leash training early on. Nothing makes me happier than when I walk through my neighborhood/park and watch everyone stare at the 120ish pound bear-esque ball of black fur on the end of the leash. They can never believe how well he behaves on the leash. Though he is sweet as can be, he never quite learned that the food on the kitchen counters doesn’t belong to him. Everyone in my family knows better than to leave anything sitting on the counter unattended!

Newfoundlands are the best! We have a 4 1/2 year old female named Scout! She makes us laugh every day.
Kristen says
First trick was sit. Our pup is still 6 months old, so enforcing come is one we can’t seem to master!
Jessica W says
Huckleberry has learned to sit, stay, lay, rollover and shake! Though he’s part golden retriever he’s still terrible at retrieving and doesn’t quite understand the concept of fetch.
Jenna Osborne says
His first trick was standing up on his back legs and walking!
Pua says
We rescued our pup, so he already knew how to sit and lie down. His first trick that WE taught him was to shake hands, but he never fully mastered the fetch command! He fetches it, but then drops it and gets side-tracked! 🙂
Brooke says
Scout, our female Newfoundland, has been a joy to us since we rescued her from a giant breed rescue. When we adopted her, the first trick she learned was “speak.” The one trick she has never quite mastered is the “roll over” on demand. She will, however, roll over for tummy and back rubs.
Dianna says
I own a dachshund; so sit is sort of understood- but even at nine he’s stubborn as hell.
Rebecca says
My dog mastered high fives and tens in no time, couldnt quite get the roll over though. I blame his round belly. But he sure tries hard!
Suzanne Schiavoni says
The first trick I taught Henry was to ring a string of bells when he needed to go outside. He mastered that pretty quickly. The trick he will never master is to come when called… we keep working on this, though.
Carolsue says
Our lab pretty much mastered everything we taught him! His first trick was to “bow” to people when they came in he house!
Amy says
This might be slightly boring, but first trick I taught Kami was “sit.” Trick she hasn’t mastered is “bow”–she thinks I want her to lie down!
Kate says
We taught our pup how to sit and wait first..and he mastered that but the whole recall thing is quite difficult with any kind of distraction 🙂 He is also super confused by shake and tries to give you his paw anytime he wants something you have..just in case!
Lexie says
Big and bold…that makes me laugh. The first trick was sit. She never did master the drop command. She will go get a toy or stick, but thinks it’s a huge game when I want her to drop it!
Marcie says
What a cool idea, my doggies would love this
Brynn says
The first trick I taught Henry was to sit, followed by lay down and roll over. He is really well trained. I call him my circus dog!
Danielle @ It's a Harleyyy Life says
If sit is a trick… my dogs got that down!
Danielle @ It's a Harleyyy Life says
I wish I could get them to play dead!
Chelsi says
The first trick we taught our girl was the sit, paw, lay down combo…She refuses to learn any other tricks we try to teach her, but she did show us one trick she learned on her own – whenever we come home from work she bares her teeth into a smile!

Awesome giveaway!
The first trick we taught Murdock was to run with me. He has yet to master rolling over! 🙂
Jessica says
My sweet dog Zoe’s first trick was shake. We have tried so hard to learn roll over, but her chest is so deep she can’t roll over on her own…but it’s hilarious to watch her try!
Alli says
My boyfriend an I adopted our 5 year old chocolate lab about 2 years ago. When we first got her she already had some tricks up her sleeve but the first on we taught her was to shake. She likes it so much she does it even when we don’t ask her too. One thing that she hasn’t mastered yet is catching a treat when it’s thrown at her.
Andrea says
Sit and stay were the first tricks we taught our dog Apple. She still needs some practice with the leave it command, especially if a squirrel is involved!
Melissa Jo says
We have a Golden Retriever Named Riley, She also Loves the Treats that come in a Barkbox

Still Struggles with Roll over

Dexter’s first trick was to sit. He hasn’t gotten roll over, but to be honest, I’m ok with it. He’s so cute and would love a Barkbox!
Heather @HeatherRunsFast.com says
I’ve seen Bark Box on several blogs and it looks awesome! The first trick I taught my dogter was sit, but since that is more of a command, I’ll go with “play dead.” She is too funny, she’s lays there until we say, “come back to life!” I never could master the “roll over.” I think bigger dogs have trouble with that (she’s about 60 lbs) but maybe one day!
Katherine says
First was mastered Sit….the one that could never master was drop it….as you can imagine if he gets anything that he isnt suppose to it turns into a chasing game!
Natalie says
First trick we taught Moe was to sit. He has since learned how to play dead, stay and sing, but cannot master laying down. We are working on it though!
Ashley {The North Carolina Cowgirl} says
First trick I taught my dog was sit, then of course lay down, then shake. The best trick I ever taught him was to play dead when I shot him. He always would play dead if I asked him if he wanted to be a dead dog or tarheel, LOL.
The one trick none of my dogs have ever seemed to pick up was rolling over. :/
Beth says
I recently got my first puppy, who is now nearly 6 months old! We are still working on the tricks, but he’s almost gotten the hang of “Sit.” We haven’t tried anything else with him so far, but he sure would love the treats and toys from a BarkBox 🙂
Margie says
The one and only trick our dog, Phineas, can do is sit. My son tries everyday to get him to shake……no luck yet!! Maybe today…..you never know……. is what he always tells me.
Taylor Ellis says
Sit and stay was the first trick i taught my dog, we havent quite mastered roll over yet.
Janeen says
She learned to sit, but will not roll over.

Sit was the first trick that we taught my boyfriend’s dog. We’re still working on roll over and play dead.
