I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Oh my gosh, I have three dogs and have debated whether or not to sign up for this! We taught our oldest dog (Chloe) to sit and shake before eating breakfast/dinner/treats, however, now that she’s six, she doesn’t feel the need to have to do that anymore. Our two younger ones (brothers, Turk and Caico) still have to sit, although they’re not great at the paw shake. Chloe barks but she never mastered barking when commanded – the whole “Speak!” thing doesn’t work 😛
Claire says
Winston is pretty smart and mastered most of your basic ticks/commands, but ‘stay’ still eludes him! Maybe one day…. I keep trying!
Katie says
My husband and I taught our pup, Sage, to “touch”– put her nose to our hand. It works much better than “come “! We’ve tried roll over so many times to no avail.
Ashley says
My piffle maddie is a very smart dog. First trick she ever learned was to high five :). She knows how to roll over (as chunky as she is), give each paw, lay down and give kisses. The tricks I can never get her to master is to speak on demand (though she loves doing it off demand) and play dead :). Love her to pieces!!
Dina says
The first trick Moose learned was sit! He has learned many other tricks and knows a ton of words! His favorites are Cheese and Blankie. When we are on the couch he will go upstairs get his blankie and bring it back down to the couch! Its the cutest thing ever and never gets old! haha He has yet to learn “roll over” though. We think its too awkward for his 100lb labrador body to do! haha
Mallory says
I have 100 pound German Shepherd who is way too smart for her own good! She learned how to shake first, because we would wave a treat in front of her nose and she would try to slap it away…slowly this turned into “shake”! Tasha has never been good at “staying”. If mommy or daddy start to walk away she MUST follow for fear of being left behind (because obviously being left alone in a room without a human would be torture)! Tasha would love a BarkBox!
Leigh says
My dog cannot shake to save his life!! I have tried, my husband has tried, and my mother-in-law tries every single time she sees him. He just sits there and stares at your hands looking for a treat. hahaha
Jessica @ Fit Talker says
Love this! I’ve considered trying Barkbox for quite some time now as I know that they also do a lot with rescue groups, which I LOVE! I think the only reason I haven’t is because I didn’t feel like getting more grief about how I spoil my dog. 🙂
When we got Minnie she already knew sit, but paw was her first trick, followed by high five. I’d like to teach her down but have had zero luck so far.
Tara says
I have an 18-month old German Shepherd who keeps us VERY busy 🙂 She would love a box of treats just for her, especially because she now has a 6-month-old little “sister” to contend with (my daughter). My pup’s first trick was “sit.” She’s not very good at “stay,” and we still work with her to master that one!
Nicole S. says
The first trick my dog Jasper (a 3 year old Bernese Mountain Dog) actually learned to mater was to shake a paw! We can now get him to shake one paw, and when we say “other” he’ll switch paws and shake with the other one! Though sometimes he gets it wrong haha. The one thing he can’t seem to get the hang of is to return the ball after he’s fetched it…he comes close to dropping it back off but then he runs away and wants you to chase him!
sarah says
The first trick we taught Dutchess was to ring a little bell on the door so that she could go outside 🙂
Kelly says
The first trick I taught my beautiful Brindle rescue boy Hank was to sit. He got the simple task pretty easily. He’s never quite gotten the hang of healing, staying, or listening all that well, but I love him so much!
Hayley says
The first trick I taught Carter was “sit” if you can even call it a trick?? He’s a year and a half old Labradoodle and we are still hoping he can master the trick of sitting in the backseat of the car while Mom and Dad are in the front— he hates being left out, so he’s usually half in the back and half on the middle console! 🙂
Casey says
My dog Bob Barker still can’t master lay down. Haha. He’s working on it!
Kate says
Hank, our 4 month old German Shorthaired Pointer was quick to learn tricks when there was any food involved. Sit, whoa, stay, easy, fetch! We’re still working on the whole “no bitting” thing :-/ it’s great when he has toys to distract him from his human chew toys (namely his momma!).
We were SO close to getting a Vizsla (we hunt and wanted our own bird dog) but found a great GSP breeder near us. I love reading about Sadie!
Jessie says
Hi Julie! My dog (Max) will NEVER be able to fully ‘roll over!’ He gets too excited for the treat and only gets about half way through the roll before giving up 🙁 He’s too cute though to not give him the treat!
Ashley says
The first trick I taught Riley was to sit but she never really nailed the stay with a treat on her nose deal!
Crystal says
The first tricks my mini Aussie Joey learned were the usual: sit, lie down, shake. By far my favorite, however, is a trick where she covers her eyes when you ask her “How’s my driving?” It is one of the cutest things I have ever seen and makes us laugh every time 🙂
Rebecca Wright says
I rescued a Dotson/chihuahua mix. The first trick I taught her besides to come to her name, was to stay and then sit. The one she can’t seem to master is no whining. She whines often and I can’t seem to get her to stop lol. We will keep trying though, maybe one day!
Jackie says
The first trick I taught my dog was, of course, “sit.” Right now we are trying to master “down.” I am sure the treats from a BarkBox would help! 🙂
Kristy says
The first trick my dog mastered was down. Is that even a trick? I count it.
She still has quite a lot of trouble with roll over. May be time to give it up!
Andrea D says
The first tricks my dog Henry learned were sit and shake. He basically learned them at the same time. We tried to teach him roll over but he is a 70 lb golden doodle and it got hard pushing him around….one day maybe!!
Shawna Vite says
The first trick we taught our little Millie was to sit and when we threw a treat at her, to catch it. That is about as far as we got. I was trying to teach her to jump through my arms but she ends up spazzing out and getting excited and just runs around. Oh well, we love her.
Megan says
The first tricks I taught my dogs were the usual obedience commands like sit & stay. I suppose the one they have’t quite mastered is sitting with a treat on their nose. Definitely the most useful one they have mastered is “drop” – comes in handy when their little lab noses take them to something gross that they think they need to bring to me haha
Linz @ Itz Linz says
Does sit count as a trick? That’s about all Zoey can do haha
Tera says
Oh wow what a great give-away!!
What was the first trick you taught your dog?–My dog was a 1 yr old when I rescued her, so she already knew the basic ‘sit’ and ‘shake, so the first trick I got to teach her was ‘roll over’ …She loves it!
What is one trick your dog could never quite master?– I’ve just recently started trying to teach her to spin around, she gets it some of the time and other times she gets all confused and her head goes one way and her body goes another! But she tries haha!
Kate says
The trick I’m most proud of teaching Chloe is not a trick at all, more just basic manners, but it has made such a difference in the family’s quality of life. She’s small and would love to jump on the back of the couch and bark her head off at anybody walking by in the street, which would get the other dog going. Instead, I taught her that barking immediately got her evicted from her perch, so now she prefers to stew quietly over our neighbors invading her street! Barkbox would be so fun for her – what a great giveaway!
Meredith N. says
I just can’t seem to teach my dog Brizzie how to roll over.
Heather H says
One of the first tricks we taught our beagle, J.R. – yes, named after the infamous J.R. on Dallas – was to shake “hands”! We were probably the proudest fur baby parents ever! He just can’t seem to master the “roll over” command. He completely gets “sit” and “lie down”, but every time we try “roll over”, he just lays down and then looks up at us! It is too cute. He would be SO excited to get a BarkBox!
Morgan says
The first trick I taught Calvin was to ‘stop’. He immediately stops whatever he is doing (walking, jumping, etc) when I use it. It was mostly so he wouldn’t wander too far away! He never could master paw or shake. We worked on it forever but nothing lol!
Amanda says
Midge (my chihuahua) mastered fetch really early on – and if I ask her if she’s ready/set/really? then she’ll “talk” back to me to let me know that she is! Unfortunately, our chocolate lab doesn’t have the same sort of retrieving skills – he’s much more into “keep!”
Ellen says
As you can imagine, weenie dogs are stubborn! My miniature dachshund, Slinky’s first command he learned was “sit.” He does that well… on carpet. He can’t handle it if he has to sit on the cold floor. Spoiled, right? One he never mastered was “stay.” He will stay for a treat but otherwise he’s wide open. I would love if I could spoil him with new toys and treats every month! 🙂
Christen says
So exciting we’ve been wanting to try Bark Box for a while now-Im sure our little Wilbur would love it since its always an exciting day when a new toy enters the house!
The first trick he mastered was the sit/laydown since he liked to combine the two to ENSURE he got a treat no matter which one you asked for! Bang bang was always comical to try to teach and one he never really achieved since he just liked to chase your hand when we trained!
Mikaela says
I don’t have a dog of my own, but my roommate has a dog that I’ve basically adopted. I’m not sure what the first trick she taught him was, but we are still trying to master the bang, bang trick where you “shoot” the dog and they fall on their back. He would love a bark box!
Emily says
The first trick Sophie the Westie learned was to sit still when there is food next to her. When I say “free” she is allowed to eat the food on the floor. This is a great trick because she never eats anything that i drop on the floor now unless i say “free”.
Cassidy says
The first trick I ever taught my dog was how to give a high-five! And the trick she hasn’t quite mastered is fetch! No matter how many times I throw the ball, she always wants to chew on it and keep it safe instead of bring it back to me!
Bree says
The first trick Marley mastered was “room.” Anytime we are getting ready to leave or when he is in time out we say “Marley go to your room” and he goes right into his cage. Now that doesnt mean he neccesarily stays in there! He’s constantly poking his little head out to see if its time to come out!
Kourtney says
Rylee is only 10 pounds but SO smart! She will do just about anything for a ball (totally more effective than treats). Our favorite is her ‘360’ where she jumps and spins around 🙂 We still haven’t figured out how to get her to hide (put her hands over her eyes) … that’s the one that has alluded us – but I think it’s parenting, not on her! What a fun giveaway – thanks!!!!!
ladywild says
I LOVE Training my pooch. She is fun and smart (well, one of my dogs is). Her first trick was probably sit. Now she can sit, down, turn right and left (with just words), walk around us, leave it, high 5, beg, shake, and say Thank You. The one thing we can’t get her to do is roll over. It freaks her out. Playing dead was a failure too. She is too happy wagging her tail.
Alex says
The first trick I taught my dog was to sit. The trick my dog never quite mastered was “roll-over.” He starts to roll and then just gives up and waits for his treat!
neonmoon10 says
First trick…probably to sit. Favorite trick…my dog can count. Really. If I hold up 4 fingers, she will bark four times. The one thing she can’t master is barking just once. If I hold up one finger…she fails. Love that dog.
Sarah says
Lucy’s first trick was sit… but she is kind of a stinker and only does it when she knows treats are coming
Marie says
I have 2 Bichons. Grady’s first trick was sit – he was a runner, so we had to get that under control! Bella learned shake. Both of them though cannot master roll over!! I’ve tried a million times and now they are both 7 I’ve given up! 🙂
Samantha @ The Faithful Runner says
The first trick my dog learned (besides the basic commands) was to high five. When she was a pup, she used to always paw at the air whenever she wanted something, so we turned it into a high five on command. 🙂
She could never quite master rolling over. She HATES being on her back, so that one never worked out for her, but I’ve managed to teach her to put her toys away! It’s incredible! It’s so much fun to train her and see progress. I hope to someday have my own dog boarding/training facility.
Anna Norman says
First trick we taught our Chocolate Lab was “Leave it”. Best thing we ever did.
He’s 6 and we still can’t get the roll over command to work.
Lisa Tardi says
The first trick we taught our little “God of War” (His name is Ares and its funny because he is the smallest cutest little fluff ball) was to army crawl. I say trick because sit, lay, shake a paw, etc, are all quite natural for dogs, so the first trick-trick was crawl. Its so cute 🙂
Amanda says
Dharma mastered fetching without us even trying when she was really young. One thing she still does is jump on people when they come over or she passes them on a walk. She never mastered “off”.
Nina says
The first trick my dog learned was to sit, and the trick she still hasn’t been able to master is drop the ball! She loves it too much!
Stephanie says
We’re still trying to get my dog to shake but she is a pro at “sit” and “share”!
Andrea says
I have a labradoodle her first tricl was to sit but I can not get her to lay down. She just is too excited 🙂
