I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

What was the first trick you taught your dog? Sit 🙂 then shake
What is one trick your dog could never quite master? lay down. He just won’t do it!
Samantha says
After many advanced classes of training for my dog, she can never really get a hang of “crawl”. She will army crawl for one hot second, then bounce up and try to get the treat. Yet somehow can could master balancing on her hind legs…..it’s a good thing she’s cute.
Anna says
I agree with you…dogs are the best! I have a yellow lab and her first trick was to sit. My step-dad is trying to teach her to pick a minnow out of a bucket full of water, bring it to him, and then drop it in his hand for fishing…she gets the minnow but has ended up eating quite a few so she is still working on that one! I know she would love the BarkBox!
Cel says
we first taught roscoe how to sit. and he has not mastered anything since! ha!
Jamie says
My ol’ pup would love this! He’s not great at tricks, but will usually sit on command- my brother taught him a hand motion to go with it so you don’t even have to say sit! We didn’t keep up with that, but sometimes he will surprise us! He will NOT lay down on command though!
Kristy says
We have an 8 month old husky & Rhodesian ridgeback mix. He’s hysterical and a handful of crazy energy. His first trick was “sit”, which he mastered in just a few tries. We’ve been working on “roll over” lately, but he hasn’t gotten it yet!
Brittany @ read, run, repeat says
Fiona’s first trick was “sit”, but my favorite trick is “kiss” where she touches noses with me 🙂 we also trained her to “sit pretty” and she rings a bell to go outside 🙂 she hasn’t yet mastered the not jumping on people thing.. And I don’t know if we’ll ever get that one down!!
Lori says
I have three dogs and they each have very different personalities. We have taught Bella to dance, but she will NOT sit. Grizzly will sit, but will not lay and Max will sit, lay and dance, but will NOT WALK down the stairs ( no lie, we have to carry him down the stairs and he is two years old). We are the biggest suckers!
Molly says
Still working on teaching my dog to “greet” visitors at the door by sitting, and raising a paw for a handshake.
But he got fetch, sit, stay, and go lie down pretty quickly!
Larissa says
The first trick I taught my dog Champ was to high five. He picked it up really fast and loves giving high fives all the time now! 🙂
Rachael Thompson says
We just got a new puppy last week! So excited for this journey… So far our favorite trick is pottying outside and one we can’t master is sleeping all night ;)!
Jerica says
We have somehow trained our little 5 month old Pekingese (named Coffee) to “give kisses” in which he reaches up with both of his little paws, places them on either side of your face, and touches his barely there nose to yours. It is ADORABLE.
Unfortunately, that is about the only trick his knows, so we are still working on the basics – sit, stay, roll over. Hopefully he will learn them soon!
Chrisandra says
My little SharPei-Pug Dublin was not the easiest to train. But the first (and only) trick that she caught on to is the high five! When my husband or I put our hand up she gives us a nice little high five!
She really can’t master ‘stay’ she just wants to keep moving!
Katy Burke says
My boyfriend and I have a crazy cattle dog named Blue. The first trick we taught him was a simple one…sit. He loves to learn and he loves treats, so he has come a long way with tricks over the years! The one thing he hasn’t mastered is coming back to us when he is off-leash (the one thing I really want him to do!)…he knows he is faster than us and once he is free there is no catching him until he decides to come back! Thanks for hosting an awesome giveaway!
Lora says
We first taught Roxy how to do ‘circus dog’ where she stands on her back legs 🙂 She is great at that and at playing dead – unfortunately, she never really mastered ‘come’ or ‘stay’. Whoops.
Lisa says
The very first thing I trained my new puppy to do was to ring a bell to go outside, but she got a little too good at it when she realized that I would open the door if she rang the bell. So then she would ring the bell because she wanted to go out and play. She has definitely not mastered sit when there are other people or dogs around. She has so much energy and gets so distracted!! She loves toys and would love the BarkBoxes!
becky says
I have a two year old border collie who is sometimes too smart for his own good. He nailed sit and the basics pretty fast but still has a hard time maintaining his composure when there is a squirrel or bunny around.
Brittany P says
Chloe’s first trick was to sit. She has a very short attention span so not really any other tricks 🙂
Denise says
The first trick we taught our dog was to high-five! We haven’t quite figured out how to get him to roll over yet… 🙂
Christie says
My now 5 year old English Bulldog Oliver mostly only knows commands (sit, lay-down, stay etc.). He has maybe only one trick, and it is the first thing we taught him. It’s the army crawl. It is hilarious to see a 70lb bulldog shimmy along the floor and usually with a huge smile because he knows how much he is pleasing his giggling spectators:)
Megan says
The first trick we taught Ellie was how to sit. She still struggles with dropping the ball… so frustrating! She loves to run and get it, then she’ll bring it back to you just to tease you with it. Gotta love their cute personalities!
Electra says
I have THE SWEETEST (don’t we all think we have the best dog?! ;)) rescue mix ever. He is a 25 lb australian cattle dog mix, we think he’s mixed with a jack russel terrier. Every time I see Sadie I think the two of them would have so much fun since I picture them both playing & spazzing out together ;).
The first thing we taught the pup was “go to your room” – for his crate, followed quickly by potting training. The first TRICK we taught him was sit (the usual) but now we’ve gotten sit, lay down, up, beg, paw (both paws), high 5’s (which is SO. SO. SO. SO. FUN!) & we’re working on “play dead” now. We have so much fun with him. He’s super agile and very agility/jumping friendly so we do a ton of jumping and such with him, he will even jump into my hubby’s arms while he is standing (he’s 6’4″) and the pup is 25 lbs. It’s freakin’ awesome – he has springs for legs I tell ya!!!
The one he hasn’t gotten yet is “play dead” – we’re still working on it. He thinks the “bang” means he gets to play and get hyper and jump all around, although it’s supposed to be the complete opposite. We’re workin’ on it but hey – I’m good with him not “playing dead” because I am convinced he will live FOR.EV.ER. They’re immortal right!?!?!?! 😀
ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR SADIE POSTS! Heck, I even will search through pbfingers and sadie posts JUST to read about dog stuff, how you do things, how you run her … all those fun things. Keep up the sadie posts. I adore her and you and your site.
Would LOVE a barkbox subscription. Well – BUSTER would LOVEEEEE the barkbox subscription ;).
Keep rockin’ Julie!
Karyn says
My black lab named Layla never quite mastered roll over. She is hilarious because in the morning she runs right out into the back yard and flops on her back in the grass but if you try to get her onto her back to roll over she acts like she’s being tortured.
Nicole says
Our dog’s best trick (not sure if it’s a TRICK) but whenever we say “give kisses” he will lick you to death. It’s the sweetest. He learned to sit and lay and give paw before that. Very lovable pup 🙂
Nikki says
Sit and shake. Simple but true
Brittany Dorman says
My Beagle/Foxhound baby Bodie learned “sit” very quickly but “leave it” and “drop it” never quite stuck unfortunately — especially with all of the yummy food trash she finds on the street!
Cassie says
I can make my dog dance on his hind legs. He must have been a circus dog in another life. 😉
Brandy says
This is such a great idea. We are having our first baby in about a week or so and I think this would help the transition for our dog if she got something new each month! The first trick we taught our dog was to shake, and she can’t master rolling over for some reason!
Tricia says
Oh man!! I just know my big goof of a dog would absolutely love a bark box! The first trick I taught him was the typical sit/shake combo (although I love to show him off when he “double high fives”). Unfortuantely we hit a wall when it comes to “lay down”…although he does that quite well without command!
Lindsay says
The first thing I taught my dog was down stay, but the first trick was high five! She hasn’t quite figured out the spin in a circle trick (unless there are treats in front of her nose)!
Jessie M says
Our dog rocks & sit, shake & even speak!!!
But for whatever reason he cannot figure out “Down”.
It’s now become a 6 month work in progress!
Devan says
The first trick my 1 year old boxer/pit bull mixed baby learned was to sit. Oldie but goodie….. 🙂
We still have not conquered “roll over”….he can’t take his eyes off of that treat long enough to attempt it.
Della G. says
Oh my Jack Russell Maggie would luv a Bark Box! The 1st thing she mastered was the sit & lay positions. She never could get the shake hands thing down very good!
Christine says
Both of my dogs first learned how to sit. Our seven-year-old chocolate lab learned all the basics commands as a young pup, but our newest addition is a two-year-old basset hound that we just rescued. She didn’t know any commands so we started with sit and she’s starting to get the hang of it.
Meagan B. says
My Mini Schnauzer Winston learned SIT first and then DOWN. Try as we might, he never learned ROLL OVER and is pretty much adamantly opposed to it. Bark Box would be perfect since we are bringing home a new baby in September and he will need some extra pampering!
Catherine @ foodiecology says
Well, my dachshund is as stubborn as they come, so he hasn’t really learned any tricks. Just getting him to pee outside was a huge accomplishment! But…he’s still my little fur-baby whom we love dearly.
Alison K. says
The first trick our Springer Spaniel learned was sit, but she never quite mastered the whole idea of “heel” while walking on a leash (always a work in progress)! We are constantly looking for ways to physically and mentally entertain her, and Bark Box sounds great!!!
Therese says
The first trick we taught our Chessie was to retrieve the ball when thrown. The trick he still hasn’t mastered after 7 years is dropping the ball when he brings it back!
Margaret says
My Portuguese Water Dog is awesome at sit and down, but gets super impatient with stay. He would LOVE a Barkbox!
Allie says
We taught Duke to sit almost immediately when we brought him home! He taught himself how to guilt trip me into giving him a treat with his sad puppy eyes. He still has a hard time responding to “Come” when we are at the dog park or when he picks up a scent in our yard. He is still a pup, so between that and his hound nose he is easily distracted! 🙂
Melissa G says
Our only trick to be successful so far is to sit and walk nicely on the leash. Rosie hasn’t quite gotten the hang of staying in her spot when someone is at the door, nor does she care to learn to rollover!
Ann says
The first trick my dog Panda learned was “sit.”
She has never mastered “stay!” LOL
Becky says
The first tricks we taught our husky mix were to sit and “high five.” We tried so many times to get him to roll over, but that is one trick he refused to learn!
Susan says
The first trick we taught our Niko was “high five”! He loves giving high fives 🙂
Katie@LifesNextBigStep says
I love this! The first trick we taught Stout was ‘sit’ which he picked up pretty quickly. One thing he just CANNOT master (though it isn’t a trick) is NOT JUMPING. It drives me insane. The dog just gets so darn excited he cannot contain himself. It only lasts a minute or so and then he is his normal semi-calm self, but that minute drives me bananas!
Kim says
The first trick I taught my dog was rollover…now my boys have her doing it all the time for treats!
Sam says
My little dog hates tricks. She is smart but so stubborn! She’ll sit and stay but refuses to shake, roll over, etc. such a little turd. My shepherd does all kinds of tricks but my favorite is when I say “paws” and he jumps up and gives a double high five. 🙂
Novella says
Roll over/play dead is the one trick my dog could never master. He’s a basset hound so those tricks are somewhat physically challenging for him haha
Laura says
I have a one year old goldendoodle! He was nicknamed “gold boy” in his litter and he surely has lived up to his name! My sweet Lennox’s first trick was “sit,” closely followed by, “high five!”
One trick he still doesn’t get is lay?! I’ve tried and tried. He has learned all sorts of new fancy tricks, but I’ve come to accept lay just isn’t happening!
Victoria Braselton says
My bulldog Princess would love this giveaway! The first trick I taught her was to sit AND…..that’s basically all she knows. What can I say? She’s a bulldog…
Julia says
This is a great idea! My dog gets SO excited over new toys and treats too. My dog learned to shake pretty quickly but he still hasn’t gotten the whole roll over.
