I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

My German Shorthair Pointer Mara would love to try BarkBox! The first thing we taught her when we got her a year ago was to sit and stay. She is really good at sit, but for stay it has to be on her terms. We have tried over and over to try and get her to roll over, but it won’t quite stick.
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
The first trick that I have taught my dogs is to sit!
christine says
The first trick we taught our dog was sit. She never really quite mastered the rolling over thing.
Kendra says
Our dog, Precious, is great at “bang bang” (play dead) which is quite hilarious when we do this at the same time as my twin sister’s shih tzu. It’s pretty adorable when they fall over at the same time
Leslie says
The first trick I teach my dogs are to stay and sit. One of my dogs can play dead, but the other refuses!
Jordi says
She learned how to sit first!!! She cant quite get how to rollover! haha
jane says
What was the first trick you taught your dog? – i taught my chihuahaua to sit, fetch and roll over – he caught on fast!
What is one trick your dog could never quite master? – my weimaraner can’t seem to catch on to “shake”
Heather @fitncookies says
First trick was to sit. He still can’t master rolling over, haha.
Kelsey says
I have a one and a half year old goldendoodle who is SO fun. The first “trick” we taught her, aside from sit and stay, was to give us a high five, and then we expanded that to “Gimme 10!”.
Yvonne G. says
Our Pekingese Herb has learned come, sit, stay(somewhat) and down, but does not roll over.
Jenny says
I was pretty boring and taught my dog to “sit” first thing! I really want to teach him to roll over and catch a ball in the air, but it’s definitely going to be a process 🙂
Amanda says
My dog would love this! As smart as my little Pitt is he never was able to master many tricks but he can sit and wait to eat his food till we give him the ok. I really want to teach him to make me coffee in the morning but so far things aren’t looking good 😉

What a fun website! Super excited about this one!! We are getting our new puppy in a couple weeks. Vizsla. Which is how I found your website… blog stalking anyone with vizslas 🙂 So technically we will be learning all new tricks!
But my first dog –Sit and stay were the first… but I don’t know if those are “tricks” really. More safety/proper etiquette. No? First fun trick though was shake. But the Play dead… never could get that one. It was always more of the fastest roll over ever. Made me laugh every time.{wink}
Rachel says
Our dog mastered sit as his first “trick”. However, roll over was one of those tricks we could never get him to do. He does not like the idea of being put on his back!

HI! My Pit Mix Colie aka Googs loves learning tricks! she already knew Sit so the next thing I taught her was High 5 bc I think its adorable! She now knows how to play dead but she always gracefully “play” dies with a smile lol. I tried teaching her how to jump through a hula hoop and she was not a fan. She is very skiddish and did not like me trying to teach her by using my arm so she would just army crawl under it, every time. I will most likely be giving up on that one lol.

Hi! I have a Dachshund named Cinnamon. She weighs 13lbs. She would love to have a bark box because she has never had a bark box before. Cinnamon knows 4 tricks. The first one I taught her was to sit. She also knows how to beg, speak, and dance on her hind legs.

Hi, Julie!
I would love to win a Barkbox subscription for my WONDERFUL Shiba Inu (Doge), Daphni Mae. I have had her since I was a freshman in college and she has made my life so much better!
The first trick she ever learned was sit. She still does it, but is highly motivated by treats. She never really got the stay down too well, Shiba Inu’s are escape artists. She used to run away from my apartment any time the door was open. Now that she is older, she will still sneak outside but doesn’t wander too far. Maybe a Barkbox will encourage here to stay at home.
Thanks!

My dog just can’t seem to master the art of cuddling. He’s getting better now that he’s not a puppy, but “cuddling” during a movie usually involves wrestling him into my arms while his legs remain stick-straight and he wriggles out to go play!
Ashley S says
I taught him how to play dead. I say ‘bang!’ and pretend shoot him and he falls over on his side until I tell him he can get up. It’s the cutest thing ever!
Kaitlan says
I have a chocolate lab named Maisy. She shares my obsession for food but still can not figure out how to fetch a ball and bring it back!!
Marissa says
My sweet rescue dog, Sasha, doesn’t have a lot of tricks up her sleeve. She never really mastered playing fetch because she’s more interested in cuddles–when I throw her a toy, she chases it, puts it in her mouth, promptly drops it, and comes over for some love instead. She has, however, mastered going to her room when it’s time for me to leave the house because she knows she gets a treat.

I taught our mini schnauzer how to high five! He never seemed to catch on to roll over though. Maybe one day!
Brittany says
Indiana Pennsylvania (he goes by Indy) would love a 6-month Bark Box subscription! He’s a Cocker Spaniel/King Charles mix with more energy to go around than we can handle sometimes! He gets really excited, I mean embarrassingly excited, for guests and we have a hard time containing him. If we could teach him to slow his roll when guests come over and that calm, affectionate dogs get more love than the wild and crazy, it would be awesome!
This is a great giveaway! Thanks!

My dog Blake is a 40 pound boxer/whippet mix and he is FULL of energy and personality! The first trick we taught him was “sit” which we still use all the time! And the one we are trying desperately to perfect is “come.” He just wanders off in his own little world and completely ignores our commands. It is quite frustrating. 🙂
Raychel says
The first trick I taught my aussie was “paw”, and it took a LONG time but she finally has mastered roll over. Though now every time she sees a treat she runs to the middle of the floor and starts rolling and rolling before I even command her, lol.
Danielle says
The first trick I taught my dog was to sit! Followed by shake a paw, and high five. He’s only a 6 month old Golden Retriever, so he still has lots of new tricks to learn!
Veronica Klein says
The best and first trick I taught my handsome siberian husky ( His name is Helios) is to shake and then shake with the other paw, but the catch is that he understands the command in both English and Polish! He’s so smart and I love home so much! I know this monthly box would make his day!
Paige says
The first command I taught my dog was sit – a good foundation for everything else! But I guess the first real “trick” I taught her was to sit up and then fall over when I say “BANG!” She’s never quite mastered the “play dead” portion of the trick though. She can’t wait long enough to sit up and get her treat. 😉
I’m planning to get Zuri a friend in the next year or so and your blog has made me want to look into vizsla rescue programs! Sadie seems like such an awesome companion. 🙂
Tierney says
Lou would absolutely love this!! She is such a well trained golden retriever but can not for the life of her roll over..
Casie Lynn says
Hunter first mastered sit. I tried to teach him roll over, but we still aren’t quite there… and I kinda stopped trying with that one.
Sarah says
I tried to teach my dog how to dance-basically stand on his hind legs and turn in a circle. He could never quite get it and instead now I just reward him for standing on his hind legs and looking cute.
Amy S. says
We have a rescue border collie and his first trick was to shake but one he can’t seem to master is rolling over. He loves to lay on his back and have his belly rubbed but trying to get him to roll over just has never worked hahaha.
Jennifer Wheeling says
Love the idea of a subscription box for pets!! The first trick I taught my Schnoodle Snickers was to “High Five,” since that isn’t really much of a trick she caught on super quick. As for any other trick…yep never will do any others.
Emily says
I have a 125 lb Saint Bernard puppy Chloe (yes, she’s still not full grown) who will do just about anything for a treat or toy. The first trick she mastered, like many dogs was sit.
One trick she cannot master is rolling over on her right side. She can roll over on her left side multiple times in a row, but for some reason just can’t flip all the way over on her right side. It’s hilarious to watch!
My favorite and most useful “trick” of hers is that we can tell her to “go get Sydney” (my boyfriend’s dog), and she will round her up and bring her to us no matter where she is (upstairs, outside, etc).
Kate says
My dog is the cutest jack russel mix and he LOVES to play ball! So the first trick he was taught was how to bring the ball to us. He’s good at bringing it back to you so you can throw it but now he’s figured out that he can use his nose to push the ball to you so he can sit and be ready when you pick up the ball. Also, with his nose he chooses who he wants to throw the ball, so he pushes it to that person. He also learned how to open doors that are slightly cracked to open by myself with his paws. He’s a smart one!
Trick he didn’t learn is how to do a roll. We are working on that one.. but when we do it he just stops and lays on his back with a goofy dog smile.
Jamie says
We have 2 labs. One we got as a puppy and the first thing we taught him was to sit. Our second came to us when she was 3 and while she knows basic commands we haven’t been able to teach her things like ‘spin’ and ‘roll over’ like we taught her brother. But she’s a love bug anyway!
Kelly says
Murphy first learned sit, but my favorite he does now is “fist pump”!
Mary says
My 2yr old Blue Heeler mix is a rescue dog. Bella is my everything! She learened sit and shake quickly. No jumping on people is the one thing she is having a hard time with. But she gets so darn excited when visitors come. My oldest son lives away from home and everytime he comes through the door Bella cries like a little baby and will not leave his side. So sweet!
Courtney says
The first real trick – other than sit, etc. – we taught Reagan (our Goldendoodle) was to shake! She is a little overeager with it now, and loves sticking her paw out to greet people. We’ve been working on getting her to roll over, but she’s so big and clumsy that it only ever happens on accident. She is such an energetic dog and would LOVE to receive BarkBox toys and treats in the mail 🙂
Claire H says
I have the cutest little Boston Terrier named Stella, and am SO glad I’m not alone in being a crazy dog lady 🙂 The first trick she learned was sit – now she only does it because she knows she’ll get a treat. The other trick she just cant get is roll over – she just wriggles around on the floor on her back instead.
Christina says
The first trick we taught our dog, Scarlett (a 6 year old black lab – pit mix) was to give a high five. It’s so adorable! She would love a Bark Box I’m sure because she is all about treats and also all about new toys. 🙂
Mandy says
We got our puppy, Trooper, in early March so he’s still just a baby! The first trick we taught him was ‘sit’ and the trick he never quite mastered was…. ‘sit.’ He’s always just way too excited to STAY seated until we actually give him the treat. So it kind of turns into a sit…and jump. Too adorable to resist though! 🙂
Ericka says
The first “trick” we taught our dog was sit…I guess that’s not really a trick though haha. I don’t know if it’s considered a trick, but our dog can jump pretty high/far, so if you hold a stick/ball/frisbee up and tell him to come get it, he’ll run and jump and snag it from your hand 🙂
Alisha says
The first trick my dog mastered was to “dance” for treats.
Karla says
We adopted our dog, Shiloh, from the pound about 6 years ago. She was very shy and timid as she had been in the shelter for a long time while all of her puppies had been given homes. I am now that crazy dog lady who thinks Shiloh is basically my real human child 🙂 The first trick she learned after trusting us was to give “kisses” where she licks your face.
The trick she won’t do is to fetch. She will run after a ball or stick but won’t return it, she puts it right between her giant paws and just keeps it. So strange and silly!
Allie M says
Besides sit, our first trick we taught our dog was “high five”. We laugh Everytime he does it because it’s so cute!
Jillian says
I have never heard of a BarkBox! What a great idea! I have a 2 and a half year old chocolate lab mix, and the first trick my husband and I taught her was to sit. She is great at sit/lay down, but she hasn’t mastered the whole stay for more than 10 seconds thing! I would love to teach her how to shake, but that training has been few and far between haha
Liz Young says
The first trick we taught our Jozee was “paw” and “other paw” which she picked up fairly quickly…pretty much anything beyond that is hopeless though! We have tried “play dead” and “roll over” a few times, but she’s a bit too spazzy for those…I have been eyeing a bark box for her for a while now!!!
Meghan says
The first thing we taught Gunner was to “sit”–not sure if that’s a trick or not. Now our favorite thing to do is to hide his bone and ask him to “bring me your bone”. He’s so proud of himself when he finds it and brings it to us. I’d love to teach him to high five, but being part dachshund, I’m afraid he’d never be able to pick up his short legs high enough!
Chelsea @ Chelsea Eats Treats says
We try to teach our dog how to “army crawl,” but most of the time he gets too excited and only crawls with his front paws while sticking his butt in the air/walking with his back paws. It’s pretty hilarious, and I don’t even try to correct him because I like it better that way 😉
