I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

The first trick I taught my dog, Shelby, was how to catch a frisbee. She’s still going strong, now six years later, and will go crazy when a frisbee is in sight!

We got our little man in May. Bentley is a black lab x golden retriever mix and such a high energy, loving, growing dude. He is a little over 3 months old and receiving a Bark Box would be great since those puppy teeth are destroying lots 🙂 Bentley is still young but the first thing he actually learned was “wait” and “come”. We can tell him to wait and walk away from him and as soon as we say come he runs full speed at our legs. The “wait” trick is great on walks when stopping for cars. We keep trying to teach him paw but he has yet to get it he just licks our hands instead,

The first trick my dog learned was…. Get and bed and cuddle
Taylor Spitzley says
The first trick we taught our puppy after basic commands was how to roll over. Too cute!
tara says
Maggie learned how to sit very easily. She never did get comfortable going to the Down position on command, although she lays that way at home allll the time.
Marielle says
I’ve always wanted to try Bark Box for our little lab, she’s a little over 1! And I’m sure Paisley would love it! I would say that she learned to sit and shake really fast. (she’s bribed easily with treats) She’s very antsy so trying to teach her to roll over has not worked at all. We physically have to log roll her which is quite comical!
Natalie says
We’ve only had our dog a few months, but he has become such a part of our family. We’ve taught him sit, but he hasn’t quite mastered “drop it” or “leave it.”
Annie @ What's Annie Making says
This is so awesome!!! I’ve seen these before but never splurged and ordered one for Charlie. His first trick was to sit, but his current favorite to shake. Pretty sure he would give high fives all day for those cheese snacks 🙂 We’re still working on “speak” but I’m not hopeful that will ever happen.
Kim says
The first trick my Jax ever learned was sit. The that he hasn’t mastered and we still work on to this day (4 years later) is stay 🙂 He’s such a stubborn Shiba Inu that he wants to do his own thing and not listen to his momma. Plus he is always wanting to go with me everywhere…my little shadow. This would be a wonderful treat each month for him, aside from all the other ways I spoil him 🙂
Erin says
The first trick i taught my American Bulldog, Big Boi, was to sit. He did it perfectly. He could never quite manage his recall. He likes to roam and sniff and pee on things too much!!
Amanda says
The first thing both of dogs learned to do was sit. Both of them also know how to shake, but our little dog, who is a bassett mix, has never figured out how “high five.” Our black lab does it with gusto, but the bassett is just too short to balance!
emily says
The first trick I taught my Weimaraner, Edison, was a sit/shake combo! He’s never been able to master roll over :-/
Britt @ Fit Fit Britt Britt says
What was the first trick you taught your dog?- With the exception of the “basics” (sit/lay down etc.), I taught my older dog how to whisper. It still cracks me up to this day when he does it!
What is one trick your dog could never quite master? My younger dog cannot seem to get the switching of paws. When I ask her to shake, she will only give one paw and not the other no matter how hard I try lol!
Gretchen says
My 6-month old chow mix, Piper, would love a BarkBox subscription! She is super treat and toy motivated. Since she is still a puppy we’ve got a lot to learn still but we’ve got sit, down, and paw down pat. Hopefully stay and come will be mastered soon!
Marlee says
I taught him how to ring a bell when he needed to go outside!
Meghan says
My dog Sookie is very sweet and loving, maybe too much at times. She learned how to sit first and has never quite figured out that we don’t jump on people when they come in the door. She was just diagnosed with epilepsy so this would be a fun treat for her.
Lauren Weldon says
The first trick we ever taught Charlie, our German Shepard mix, was how to lay sit. We never got him to figure out how to shake – he just puts his head in your hand and gives you big puppy dog eyes!
Marie says
Well, besides the basic sit, lay down and paw. I taught my dog Chester was is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever was speak. Whenever I give him a treat I tell him to speak and he speaks and does not bark.
The one trick that I’ve not been able to master with Chester is roll over. I think because he is so big (95 lbs) it’s hard for him to do. So I’m working on balancing a treat on his nose! LOL. I think he’ll eventually get it! 🙂

Lucy is our 6 month old white and black American Cocker Spaniel. She is a hot mess. The first thing I was able to teach her was back. She will sit in the middle of the room until you are outside and the door is closed. We are still working on getting her to stop jumping and biting all the time. She will get there eventually. I have always wanted to try a Bark Box. This is a great give a way.
Ivy says
The first trick I taught my dog was to “sit” The one trick my dog couldn’t quite master was “playing dead” she would do great other than the fact that she wouldn’t stop wagging her tail. 🙂 I have 4 dogs so I hope I win this, they would love it!!!
Monica says
Duncan is a Bichon and he has mastered lots of tricks including flipping in the air but will not roll-over! He would LOVE a subscription.
Kimberly says
You know you’re a dog lover when you get way more excited about a giveaway for your dog than for you!! 🙂 The first trick I taught my 65 lb Rhodesian/Pit mix was “sit.” We never quite mastered “heel” on walks, so we settled for a front lead harness instead.
Larissa says
Our Soft Coated Wheaton, Kasha’s first trick was sit, but as a fun trick we taught her how to jump through a hula-hoop! My favorite trick she knows is fetch just because it’s so much fun playing with her!
Courtney says
My chocolate lab Savannah’s first trick my sister & I taught her besides the basics is hide-n-seek. We sit her down in my sister’s room down the hall and hide in the living room. We’d yell “Come find us!” and she’d run to the living room and sniff us out. She got so excited when she’d find us! One trick she can’t seem to get down is roll over!
Jenn says
I have a black goldendoodle named Tucker. The very first trick we taught him was how to roll over. We taught him by tracing the path with a treat (I wonder how he caught on so quick ha). One trick he could never master is drop it. Even though he is a retriever by nature, he has much more fun running around with a ball in his mouth, hoping we chase him.
Alexa says
we taught our adorable 7.5 lbs yorkshire terrier to sit, stay, then come! followed by a treat of course
Kayla says
Sit is about all our 2 magnificent mutts can grasp. We try to work on other things, but their attention spans are just too stinking short! ha!
Alana says
The first trick we taught our australian cattle dogs was, of course, “sit.” What’s funny is one dog who is deaf picked up the hand signal in 2 seconds flat, while our younger able-eared heeler is so stubborn about it unless you have her favorite bacon treats! Lol. They would LOVE a Barkbox subscription!
brooke says
Ah I’ve always wanted to try the BarkBox! What a fun giveaway! … The first trick my pup learned was how to ring the bell to go outside to take care of business! But one thing my Melvin could never master was rolling over.
Lillian says
1. The first trick I taught Maggie was to sit!
2. Maggie refuses to “roll over” upon request. I think she finds it demeaning!
Jennifer says
My cock-a-poo Kennedy’s first trick after “sit” was fetch. He LOVES to play and will bring me any toy he can find for me to throw, especially when I’m making dinner. He wants all of my attention 🙂 He can’t quite master “lay down” he just looks at me when I try to get him to do it.
Valerie says
Of course Blaze learned ‘sit’ first. He’s a PRO at almost all tricks… he’s still trying to manage roll over though.. poor guy just can’t get it!
Lindsay says
The first trick we taught Lucy was to roll over. Now as soon as she sees us pull out a treat, she just rolls over. =)
Ashley P says
The first trick I taught my dog was “sit”. It is like the only trick he will do and only for a treat. He is a dachshund and so very stubborn. He never mastered “come”. He will totally ignore him when we call him if he’s busy sniffing around the backyard.
Laura says
Mack and Reggie both learned “sit” first. Reggie still can’t master “lay down”. Seems like it would be simple, but he is way to hyper!
Paige says
I’m not sure if my dog has “mastered” ANY tricks!! I’m such a terrible dog parent! haha
Lisa says
I’m still working on roll over with my chihuahua…they are not too big on the tricks!
Jamie Whittendale says
•What was the first trick you taught your dog?
To shake… but now he just does it randomly in hopes of seeking treats
•What is one trick your dog could never quite master?
Roll over… we can only get half way 🙁
Jennie G says
First trick we taught our fur baby was to sit. She can even do high five too. We haven’t mastered rolling over.
Jamie says
Our GoldenDoodle Wrigley immediately learned to sit, but she refuses to “stay”. She would LOVE to get packages from BarkBox. She loves it when we get packages b/c she just wants to chew and lick on the boxes, gross, I know! She loves all kinds of treats, especially fruity ones. Every day when I eat blueberries, she gets the beggar face and ends up w/ a puddle of slobber under her chin! She loves them!
Leah says
The first trick our big boy learned was the usual sit.. Hasn’t quite mastered rolling over, but it’s a work in progress!
Suzanne says
My Black Mouth Cur/German Shepard/Pit bull mix (a rescue, of course) Howdy’s first trick was “sit” and now he *sometimes* comes when he is called. He would LOVE a bark box subscription! I love how I can tell that your love for Sadie is the same as my love for Howdy, pretty much my whole instagram and photo albums are pictures of him.
Kathleen says
We have a goldendoodle and the first trick we taught her was to sit which she mastered fairly quickly, however, she stinks at bringing a ball or stick back to us 🙂
ashley says
The first trick i tauggt bailey was sit and he could never quite master rollover!! he would love this! whenever we get a box he thinks it’s for him so i can only imagine how he will act when it really is for him!
Kristi says
Oh my goodness! What an INCREDIBLE giveaway!!! We just had a litter of (the most adorable) Goldendoodle puppies at my house this spring, and I am keeping one! She would go nuts over a BarkBox subscription!
Seeing as how Teddy is just nine weeks old, she hasn’t exactly mastered any tricks yet. Right now we are mainly working on using the bathroom outside… haha. 🙂 “No bark” isn’t exactly a trick, but I have a feeling she will have difficulty adding that one to her future repertoire. She’s a vocal little girl!
Kate @ Baking in Yoga Pants says
What an awesome service! We first taught our dog, Nola to shake. Our other dog, Kiah is still working on that one 😉 And neither of our dogs can seem to master the whole ‘no beg’ thing. My husband and I may have a part to play in that, haha.
SUMMER PLEWES says
I taught Jack how to sit first, but after we did stay, roll over, jump, come here, fetch and play dead.
He never quite mastered how to catch a frisbee in his mouth.
